I recently enjoyed a wonderful evening at Maritime East, a great new addition to the food scene in Berkeley. Maritime offers fine dining with special (but not exclusive) focus on seafood- my favorite. I was able to taste a wide variety of items on the menu, and particularly enjoyed the Dukkah spiced flatbread which is deliciously flavorful with the “Chopped” Salad which includes organic chicory, quince, and hazelnuts. We also tried a special wood-fired pizza topped with spaghetti squash and BBQ eel, which was unique and tasty. For my entree I enjoyed a nice-sized portion of Wild Hawaiian Ono served with divine
creamed leeks & winter greens, and fingerling potatoes. Though I was quite full when our desserts, a pear tart and mocha mousse came I couldn't help eat them up too. Our dining experience was really nice, and I look forward to returning to Maritime East.

We had an excellent meal at Cafe Majestic. The decor of this recently renovated restaurant is quite classy and we enjoyed great service along with a delectable Sea of Cortez Scallop appetizer (phenomenal) and a perfectly prepared Halibut fillet. To finish, we shared the chocolate cake, and after such a lovely dinner we were satisfied without finishing dessert. Cafe Majestic is a great choice for a romantic date.

We had a fabulous hosted dinner in the private room upstairs**. After passed crab cake and other appetizers, through delicious starters (worcestershire shrimp and decadent veal meatballs), served family-style, followed by a fresh and flavorful tuna tartare, we were full before the main course arrived. However, once my fillet of fish arrived, not to mention the chocolate-caramel pot de creme arrived, somehow, we managed to savor more deliciously balanced flavors. I was truly impressed by the quality of the food, the attentive wait staff, and pleasant and classy yet unpretentious decor. *I will definitely keep this option in mind for special occasions.

We enjoyed a generous "win" dinner at Soluna, and by ordering small plates I was able to taste a variety of items. I started with the duo of crab, which was a nice hot & cold contrast. I particularly liked the citrus accent crab salad. My partner ordered the truffle and Parmesan fries, which were also good. Then I had a second plate of the seared scallop, which was also quite good, mild and fresh flavors accompanied by a yummy sauteed leek. Since then, we've returned and I had the sea bass for dinner, which was a delicious, perfectly prepared portion, and for dessert we had the chocolate souffle with a scoop of ginger gelatto which was a perfect top off to an excellent meal. We've now enjoyed two great dinners in this great civic center location.

Dosa is quickly becoming popular, with an unending line waiting for our table when we finished around 8 on a Wednesday. Overall, I'd give an A-/B+ for the food, which I found tasty and reminscent of my time in South India, though somewhat disappointingly limited to dosas and a few other fried options. Additionally, our server was a bit too (aggressively) attentive, and they have so many tables packed in, that it felt reminiscent of Indian warehouse diners, yet about 50x the cost.

I'll join the ranks in saying Blowfish offers a cool atmosphere with fresh fish, innovative (though perhaps overdone) rolls, and a good vibe. We arrived before 7 and had no problem with service, though when we left, closer to 9, it was a zoo. While it's a good choice, I'd definitely not die for Blowfish, and given my limited budget, probably won't return again soon.

Good cheap pho. As a non red-meat eater, I am pleased they have a mixed seafood option, though I have yet to get a straight answer about what (animal?) flavors the broth. I'd love a better napkin option for my noodle-slurping, but otherwise a straighforward option for yo' pho.

I was very pleased with our trial of Range, as was every member of our party. We had a wide sampling of the appetizers (all on the seasonal menu), and though all were good, the beet salad, raw scallops, and duck were delicious. I actually ordered a second plate of the scallops for my meal, but sampled the vegetarian-wild mushroom melange, which was quite notable for a "veggie entree option." Our service was friendly, bartenders even more so, and we enjoyed a quiet corner table in the back room. Thumbs up for this newbie.

Ended up at Mai's because we couldn't bear the interminable wait for Burma Superstar across the street. I had a great sauteed mixed seafood stir fry, and when I asked for it served "spicy" they delivered... not too much, but not dumbed down at all either. A great dinner for reasonable prices.

Despite the mixed reviews, I was pleased with Iluna Basque. Certainly some items were particularly good, while others were less worthy of rave reviews. I was most impressed with the scallops, which were cooked to perfection, and the spinach and goat cheese "tortilla" which resembled a baked omlette, was delicious. The tuna was somewhat dry and in a bland sauce. Overall, positive.

I finally tried this place I'd passed by a zillion times. An easy spot for a cheap Indian buffet, though it was empty at 6, it was full by 7pm. We had a fabulous dinner at Kamakura. I had a special "Ocean Salad" which included maguro, hamachi, and salmon over a bed of lettuce with a tangy-sweet dressing. Our spicy tuna roll, was yummy, with an extra touch of teriyaki sauce adding flavor, but my accolades really go to the Hotate (Scallop) Nigiri. For $4.25 you get two huge scallops (each way bigger than the accompanying rice) topped with tiny dollop of a spicy-garlic sauce, scallion, and a side of lemon. No soy sauce needed, this hotate was the best I've had.

Went out for a absolutely delicious celebratory dinner in which most of us enjoyed the 3 course prix fixe, which includes decent but not gluttonous portions with such wide variety that ordering was a painful task. Though almost everything deserves praise, the Scallops in

My sense was that Triptych is in the nascent stages of becoming a great restaurant, still needing some work, yet definitely shows promise. Our waiter was generally attentive, yet failed to bring the requested adjustments (e.g. no prosciutto on salad) despite saying it could be done. Our appetizers were good (the Halibut and salad with goat cheese and pecans), and my scallops were cooked perfectly... perhaps they've responded to the feedback below. I give extra points to Triptych for giving the choice 2 of 4 sides alongside each entree and providing us with a carafe of water for the table.

I agree with KG that this is a great restaurant that is understated from the acclaim it deserves. Our meal was superb, staff were friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is relaxing but nice. I loved a roasted gold and crimson beet salad with a large dollop of unbelievably rich goat cheese. For my main dish I had the fish of the day, a moist and tender portion of sea bass with blanched spinach and beans that was served with a tasty yet not over-bearing anchovy & date butter. Looking for a reasonable priced place to eat before going out in NoB, we popped into Cafe Prague. I was frustrated by poor service who weren't attentive or familiar with the menu (possibly a fill in?). We each ordered soups, which were also lacking. for those not familiar with Nepali food, it is similar to Indian, though also has Tibetan-Chinese influences, such as Momos (appetizer) which are similar to potstickers. Depending on the hunger at the table, some can order entres a la carte and some with the 'combo.' A very tasty meal that made me nostalgic for Nepali. reasonable (American) prices. $8 corkage

I love the (huge and innovative) salads here, but in general I've brought many a friend on a budget who've sampled crepes (sweet and savory), omlettes, sandwiches, soups, etc and never heard a complaint. The portions are generous, especially given the price. Order at the counter style, with clean basic atmosphere. The only thumb down is for the halfhearted coffee.
There's also another located on Irving.

Speaking for the one in Berkeley, i just had great piping hot Naan and ordered the dahl. From India i expected this to be a souplike consistency, but N & C serves it as a main dish (for 3.99). It was delicious, well spiced and a huge portion for the price.

My husband loves pizza, but i love hitting up Blondie's for their salads. For those who know Intermezzo in Berkeley, Blondies has matched their big salad. For $6 you get heaping organic greens and tons of veggies from avo to beans, with a thick yummy slice of honey wheat bread. Delicious! They also make a smaller, but still good sized salad for less.

Nirvana is always a crowd pleaser. There may be a line and it can be noisy, but once seated the service is often lightening speed. Nirvana's menu offers interesting Pan-Asian flavors for both tame and adventurous palettes at reasonable prices. Portions are adequate so you don't 'need' the enticing appetizers. I also reccommend the cocktails.

It's been awhile since I ate a full dinner here, though i know i enjoyed my whole meal. All i remember is the Chocolate Tower. if you've got any room, order/share dessert. As for the wine bar, we had a delectable tuna roll (a la spring roll with near raw tuna inside) that was delicious. I agree with the recent reviewer that the wine selection was mediocre. Out of our three wine flight, I only liked with one.

I've been disappointed by Firefly twice now. A return visit confirmed my initial impressions that this is a restaurant with high potential but that doesn't quite deliver. In a cute space and using fresh and sustainable food, we've found the waitstaff unfriendly, even snooty, and the food to be hit or miss. The asparagus appetizer was excellent, but the rest of our starters, dinners, and dessert were somewhat bland &/or disappointing.

This is one of my favorite neighborhood coffee shops. Come for a coffee and baked good, sit in the sun and people watch or catch up with an old friend, or get a well priced meal at the adjoining kitchen.
