Positive Went here today. Delicious yummilicious pumpkin pancakes. Had a spoonful of friend's chocolate milkshake and it was orgasmic. I wholeheartedly endorse this place and can't wait to go again. I had the Pancake Special modified a bit: A shortstack of pumpkin pancakes (you could also get whole wheat) and two scrambled eggs (instead of one egg and breakfast meat). Yum! Positive Delicious choices. Fabulous and creative displays. Soy and fruit lactose-free options. Wonderfully satisfying no matter which option you go for. I love that they let you taste anything you want, even if it means trying most or all of the flavors. I agree that more seating would be great especially seating indoors. Positive Great date place. Delicious south Indian vegetarian food. Lots of eating with your hands. Fabulous dosas. 20 dollars for 1 order of spring vegetable dosas, 1 order of some form of bread, 1 order of coconut walnut veggie curry (inc. rice and lentil soup), and 1 mango lassi. Amazing! Positive It was incredible!! Such a find. Wonderful food. Just wish that they would have put a candle on my dessert as it was my b-day. Plentiful vegetarian options. Went with a group and it was just a wonderful experience. A lot too much food for the prix fix though. . . best to just get food a la carte. I think it would be a perfect date place too. PS I wish that I could put a double Positive on this restaurant as it was just devine. Neutral Excited to win a dinner there! It's a neutral b/c of the very limited vegetarian options and the inflexible waiter. Attentive and sweet hostess. Clean establishment. Limited (as in one) small vegetarian entree and no vegetarian soup option. Expensive prices for small dishes. Waiter unwilling to give us more rice to make the dish more filling without charge; we were charged an extra 5 dollars for a small, as in 1/4 of a cup, of rice. Crazy! If not for the dessert, we would have had to go out for dinner again, after dinner at SUMI. Desserts deliciously fabulous! Beautiful ambiance and romantic setting. Strange moment occurred when realized that there is a low mirror across from the toilet. It was awkward to see, well everything, from that vantage point. Oh and they just upped the prix fix prices, so it was $25 a person, total about $26 ($66-$40 gift certificate) for not enough food. Oy. Review #12545 SUMI

Positive Delicious, fabulous falafel. Only $5.99 for a Super Falafel: with Hummus, Eggplant, Potatoes, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Tahini Suace, served in a Lavish bread. I also had them add some yummy cucumber, tomato and onion salad. They also sell Ring Bread which they said is traditionally eaten at breakfast with falafel. It is made daily and is so good. White bread with sesame seeds. The place also sells some Middle Eastern foods and they have a deli case. Yum! Review #11612 Sunrise Deli & Cafe

Neutral I'm torn. . . I didn't like the Pad Thai (made vegetarian) but I LOVED their peanut sauce and their salad was good too. I appreciate that they served us, even though they were close to closing time. The place was clean and the servers sweet. I split the Pad Thai and Salad with a friend and the total bill came to about 15 bucks. Good price. Plus, we found parking on the street and the company was wonderful! Positive Went with a large group and they were accomodating. Delicious salad and they had tortilla espanola which was yummy. I'm not sure why they had a big glob of cheese on it and why it was dripping with olive oil. . . it's is fine on its own as a simple egg and potato dish. Some vegetarian options-yay! Wish they incorporated more protein sources into their vegetarian dishes. Having a veggie paella was great-adding tofu or something else with protein would have been fabulous! Another suggestion would be to have caffeine-free diet coke. Review #10680 Thirsty Bear Brewing Co.

Positive I brought a group of 10 people here & the food was yummy & all vegetarian! Fabulous decor. Each "set" was made up of small dishes like house made tofu with ginger that when the ginger was rubbed into the tofu was delicious. The service was hit and miss, though. Our "sets" came out as individual dishes and, as I was so hungry when I got there, I felt that my lunch was barely satisfying. I was there with conscious eaters and yet, not all of us were satiated portion-wise. I suggest getting the soup set (which was what I got when I asked the waiter what was the heaviest of the meals) & getting some appetizers. There is parking near the place so don't be like me and park on the street. I would return but perhaps with a smaller group and, having eaten a snack beforehand. I suggest that they time their meals better and offer (free) edamame for the table. In addition, I suggest training the waiters better & getting rid of the mandatory 17% tip. Neutral I wanted to like this place more but I just didn't. . . I found the food to be overpriced. We had reservations for a party of 10 and while the waitstaff were sweet, I couldn't believe that I paid 10 bucks for a salad. The salad was supposed to have feta cheese on it but when none of us could find it, the waiter brought over some more. It felt like a lot of lettuce for the price. It was a beautiful restaurant, with white table clothes and the like but I cannot believe that our meal was over 150 dollars, when most of us just got a salad. I think that one person got a glass of wine and I got a $4 mezze (like tapas) but everyone else just got salad. Oy. It was nice to be so close to the JCC. Not very many substantial vegetarian options. I suggest that they add a tofu dish and lessen the prices of the salads by $2. The bread was simple but good. Review #10677 Sydney's Home

Neutral Went here with my mother when she was in town last weekend (12/2/05). The staff was wonderful and it was such fun to sit in a hidden away restaurant with outdoor seating and beautiful indoor decor with white tablecloths. My salad was delicious but my mom didn't much care for her soup. The reason this review gets a neutral, though, is that when finding out that I was a vegetarian, the waiter after asking if I eat fish (and didn't wait for my reply) offered a crab salad. As I do not eat fish and am especially adversed to shellfish (I used to be Kosher), I was frustrated by the suggestion. Besides that, it was a good restaurant but one without many options for vegetarians and a not-so-vegetarian-friendly waiter. He did check about the stock on the soup, though (it was a vegetarian-sounding soup with chicken stock) which was nice of him. My suggestion, check it out and ask them to improve their vegetarian options. Review #10630 Sociale

Beautiful and extremely clean establishment. Would go there again in a second. Especially loved that there were many vegetarian choices. Food portions are large; I had leftovers for the next day! Positive Fabulous food. Simple and slightly cheesy atmosphere. Incredible vegan options (they say, the most vegan Thai choices in San Francisco). The waiter was knowledgeable and they let us sit there as long as we wanted (in our case, about 3.5 hours) without any pressure. They were just glad to have us; they were attentive when we needed assistance, though. It was empty when we first came (6:30pm on Sunday) but when we left, it was at least half full. Our bill was about $30 for 3 people with 3 main courses, rice, and two drinks and tax. We got free jasmine tea after our meal and free yummy banana cake. It was so good! The neighborhood is sketchy at night; I'd suggest walking with a friend and parking can be okay. Please check out this restaurant! Review #9670 Mekong Restaurant

Positive I went here b/c they were open for lunch when Indian Oven wasn't. The food was good. Yes it was mild but since that's what I can tolerate, I was happy with that. I really enjoyed by Okra dish (vegetarian) and appreciated their garlic naan, mango lassi, and mango chutney. What I didn't appreciate was that all of this together was over 15 dollars and that when I asked if my order of Okra included rice, they said that it did (and it included regular naan) but then, when I got back to my house, I didn't see any rice nor anothey slab o'naan! I don't appreciate the neighborhood either as I am not a pot smoker and the street reeks. The Rotee was empty but extremely clean and smelled delicious. I'll try it again but not for a little while. Positive B/c of the reviews here, my then girlfriend and I went here tonight. It was so yummy. The portions were very large and the prices were low. We shared #9, Gado Gado, steamed vegetables, tofu, potatoes, and boiled egg (optional), served with peanut dressing for $6.45, #49, noodle with assorted veggies and egg. I added tofu but you could add chicken or seafood for $6.45, #42, Cah Brokoli, Sauteed broccoli with mushroom and tofu for $6.95, #68, Nasi Hai Nam, a side order of garlic steamed rice for $1.95, and #79, (a pot of) Ginger Drink for $1.95 (decaf tea with spices and sugar from Indonesia poured hot over fresh ginger). Suffice to say, we have lots of delicious food left over. I drank 4 cups of tea (got X-tra boiling water b/c it was a bit too spicy for me). Adored my #49, choice of noodles & I got flat rice noodles that reminded me of the noodles in pad se eiw. Broccoli dish had a gooey sauce that didn't appeal to me. Decor relaxing. Positive I liked the food. Delicious vegetarian choices. I liked the plantains and that they have tofu. Plus they have belly dancing night a month, with the Three Sisters Bellydancers. No cover charge that night (either). Senegalese food. Reservations recommended for parties of 6 or more. I especially like the Mafe — $7.25 Originally from the border of Mali Vegetables in a peanut sauce served with a choice of rice or couscous. w/ tofu — $8.25 (they also have chicken). Also liked Aloko — $3.25 Fried plantains served with a tamarind sauce. The atmosphere was fun and the place was busy so I sat at the counter. Check it out! Review #6983 Bissap Baobab

Positive Went on a friday night (6/10/05). They sat our (no reservation) party of 9 w/o much of a wait even though the restaurant was pretty crowded. Turned out it was the night of their 20th anniversary! We were served by a very sweet and attentive mother-daughter team. The food was basic but good. I had pasta pomodoro and added pine nuts for a buck more. My then girlfriend shared an appetizer of fried calamari and garlic bread which she said was cooked well and yummy but a little cold by the time it got to the table. 5 of our table split a vegetarian pizza which they loved. There were also two cesaer salads which were eaten right up. The waitress went out of her way to see if there was caffeine in their rootbeer and made sure to get me the caffeine-free one. The only thing that bugged me was that they didn't serve eggplant parm eventhough they had a chicken version. Negative Was really looking forward to going here but when I finally went two weeks ago, it was horrible. I ordered the vegetarian (with eggplant) stuffed pasta (tortallini?) but when I bit into one of the pasta pieces, it didn't taste like eggplant at all, but had a fishy flavor. Turned out it was shrimp, & as a formerly Kosher grrl who is now vegetarian, I was offended by the flavor and even more disgusted that the manager was difficult to find in the restaurant & then, made sure that we really did have a problem by looking at the middles of the pasta himself, & then, refused to give us back our money, w/o a receipt. Luckilly, I had mine, so I got back the 10.50 but my friend who dropped his in the bathroom, didn't so the guy didn't give him the benefit of the doubt. Yuck. &, to top it off, the manager did NOT say that he was sorry. I will never eat there again. A good solution would b to have the shrimp pasta spinach, thus, making it green, & distinguishable fr. veggie pasta. Review #5594 Firewood Cafe

Positive I love eating at Cafe Gratitude and don't think that it is a cult at all. In fact, I had my b-day party there last year and everyone had a blast. In fact, the pic on this site is from that very b-day parteh! Yes, the food is raw/living vegan and yes, it has kooky (but wonderful) names but I adored the food, the waiters/owners/other patrons and had a blast. I've been many times and just wish that they had more decaf options and that it was a little less expensisce. It was magical in that I was with my friends, had found a spot to park my car (ticket-givers are merciless there-watch the meters) and had the yummy tea salad (made vegetarian) prepped at the table, fabulous samosas, delectable egg and okra dish and vegetable melange. Both were not spicy, but very flavorful. The coconut rice was outstanding and the other rice with nuts & berries was good too (just don't be like me & eat the cardamom pods by accident-oy!). Positive totally fabulous. so many choices. AND they are open until 11pm, which is so great! AND they have a parking lot! Love the sundaes. Only have 2 peeves:1) t I wish that they had more dairy free and/or soy based options and 2) it would be fab if they had more benches or other places to sit. I went there when I first moved here and felt so glad to have hit THE neighborhood spot for yumminess. Please go to Mitchell's. :) Review #2356 Mitchells Ice Cream

Positive I love it here. I usually get takeout. They have vegetarian choices and it's nice to have ministrone that has only veggie stock in it. The staff is helpful and friendly and I always feel comfy going there, even if i'm wearing PJs and getting some munchies for the long night of studying that's ahead of me. Positive Used to love their Chinese Chicken salad-I got it with tofu instead. Last time I didn't love it as much, tho. Salads are HUGE. French fries are great. Veggie burger is wonderful. Prices are very reasonable and they serve beer and wine for m'friends, and espresso for me! And, while I'm eating, I can do my laundry in the room next door and listen to some great spoken work or music (no cover) or play pinball. Bathrooms are kinda messy/icky but definetly very funky. Positive service is not so great; they are sweet but it is best to take out, anyways. food is yummy, esp, the bbq sandwhich, veggie burger and vietnamese spring rolls. love their (soy) thai iced tea. great place to go after Osento or just because. Reasonable prices. Giant portions. The soup is also wonderful as are the vegan cookies. It's worth going there pretty often. Review #2318 Herbivore

Positive Incredibly cheap prices.Lots of vegetarian choices.Especially love the eggplant with sauce-yum! Somehow I got on their list from their website, and now, at least once a season, I get 20% coupons sent to me in the mail! Used it last time, and ended up paying $21 for 3 people,7 bucks each w/ a generous tip included. Wow! The ambience is plain, agreed. The service is good. It takes little time to get seated (even if there is a line) and the food is fresh and served quickly. Pkg can be tough. Review #2317 Kiki's Japanese Restaurant

Positive I just went there on Saturday, for my then girlfriend's b-day dinner (her choice). I have to say that I enjoyed the experience, but didn't find the food steller. As a vegetarian, I was hoping for some tasty eggplant parm but they didn't have any. I liked what I got, though, but really wished that they had gone the x-tra mile and had fresh parmasan cheese for instead of what tasted like the canned version. Staff was extrememly nice and friendly and atmosphere was fun. :) Review #2316 Cafe Zoetrope

Neutral I took my visiting mom there last week. The food was delicious, with many subtle flavors and was presented beautifully. The waiter ignored us for most of our time there, he helped those around us & didn't seem to notice our table; the pair who got there after us, finished earlier, and they ordered an extra course &wine. Ex 2) It was very drafty; my mom was freezing & when she told the waiter, he did nothing but eventually, gave us her $4 tea for free. Pretty place. Good food. Horrible service. Positive Adore the cupcakes: they look so ordinary but the flavors are intircate and delicious, I think there are almond tones in the "white cupcake". Yummy! They've got that salad too with cherries and a mustard dressing. It's called something like KC's salad and it is so great. The prices are kinda expensive, though, for me. It's normal for me to spend like 11 dollars for a salad and a large soy chai. Comfy tables. Lots of places to sit and lots of spots to plug in the ol' laptop. Also have benches outside! Positive I adore the food here, especially the sweet and sour tofu. Yum! Great food and even meat eaters like eating here. Positive I adore Greens. I ate there today and it was so wonderful. Absolutely fantastic brunch with such fresh vegetables: I spent about 20 dollars to sit with four friends, eat exquisite food (goat cheese and carmalized onion frittata w/beet salad and a soy chai) that I knew was prepared with care and was vegetarian while staring at a simply fabulous view of the marina. The Tofu Sandwhich is also incredible! I try to go there as often as I can. Lots of parking too. :) http://greensrest.citysearch.com/ Review #2010 Greens

Positive Totally delicious. Long wait because there is only one sushi chef and his creations are so artfully presented. Restaurant is small and there is usually a wait to sit and then, a wait to eat. I found the food totally yummy with vegetarian options galore. Please check out the specials on the board-my companion loved her macademia crusted sushi. I think that It is just a dinner place, something like 5-10pm only. Prices are reasonable and I can't wait to find the time to go there again! :) Review #2006 Sushi Zone

Negative mid Jan '05: Last time I went I found a creepy crawly in m'food. They wre sweet about it but it was still- nasty! First 2 times: Found the food to be wonderful. So many choices for my vegetarian self. A little bit expensive and hard to find parking as it's in the mission but wonderful food, sweet owner and waitress (the owner's daughter, if I remember correctly) and the best organic edamame I've ever had!
