walked in three top...easy seating...then the disclaimers begin...too small kitchen food will arrrive famly style...which is nice but falls apart here at a three top...so, we have a veg a fish eater and oemone who wants the offal offerings..but the plates come one at a time...so only one person is eating at any given time...the food was ok the list nice and service aside from the idea that they couldnt get food out beyond one dish at atime...ok...for this part of town that is filling rapidly with closed signs and an alarming amount of sf chains..askew plutos amici etc....

I like to sit outside and have lunch here when the sun is shining...then head to beldon alley and get drunk with visiting stewardesses...the food is cheap and goodish...the service is terrible and it always seems like the second drink takes an hour to arrive...there is some disconnect with the bar and the waiters..very french!

I have eaten here for years...back when it was laid out diffrent and this piece of the cliff house puzzle was locatged upstairs...so it is still the same..except more beautiful views...yes the tourists abound and it can be pricey...the seafood here is good solid fresh...great fish and chips good louies... downstairs the new fancy restaurant can be inovative! diffrent menu...but we are about upstairs and despite the fact they are run by the park service ..so is the lodge in yosemite...this is a great way to watch the sunset and the ocean and sip champagne and eat oysters...and such...

one of my favorite dining experiences was a few years back at toms original craft in NYC...and it is with him in mind that I head to this ridiculous attempt...is it that he has nothing but contempt for the bay area? to drop this on us and not some version of craft? sigh...okish sandwich place I am sure if it wasnt that it is from the people that have beard awards and cook books and a tv show I could say...ok place...but lets get real here...this is supposed to be serious and a challange to the craft of sancwich making..and it fails...

This Bistro has now setteled in nicely across from Laguna honda hospitol and just next to the muni station. It does have a small parking lot, but it is difficult to navigate. Food...it is a mediocre french bistro that serves the usual suspects with a short but ok list. when they first opened thier portions were more generous, abd the ingrediants better quality, they have dumbed down for the neighborhood. Zinc a short drinve to Noe is a better alternative is this french starved part of the city....

this is a sad little attempt that I just made a wager would be gone before october...unless conventional wisdom fails...they are on the little stretch of land that contains a few small joints dedicated to the foot traffic of blue hairs that walk in around the laguna honda hospital muni stop. Parking? no way..there is a little lot next to the french offering, but you gave to be coming up 8th to make that work for you without a bunch of illegal uturns...ok the food...this seems to be owned by a gringo with a mexican wife..he has tried to bring his love to the tbale but there is simply no talent here...the food is good solid mexican and I want his place to be here as I live here...but...he doesnt have a handle on what is modern mexican...like Maya or Tamal...so the slouch on in a sad way...this is the toughest corner I can think of and unless you challange here you will fade as all the places that come and go in this little island do and have....

went here for lunch the other day and enjoyed my meal. I think we went in with the wrong stratagy, and would alter it somewhat but...
so the deal is there is aloverly wee buffet, with lots of salad and cold stuff and then there are the chaffing dishes filled with rice and beans and fajoda etc...and it is easy to fillup pn all here without ever getting to the skewers..the gimmick...
so the guy comes around every minute or so with a new flavor of meat on a stick and slices of a tiny slice and goes away...this goes on till you cry uncle. some of the cuts are good some not...it is expensive but the best brazilian in the city.

I went by on memorial day, and sadly no love for Q inthis town and it has closed.
I just noticed the lack of reviews of BBQ in SF...or at least of the good bbq places...strange...sure SF isn't known for good Que but there are a couple of places. Most have been eliminated by the transit project on third and the move of the giants to downtown away from the stick.
this bayview spot has three small tables if you want to eat in ...the food is Alabama style and the ribs are great as are the fried things like the hush puppies and oysters and cat fish...greens and such also great and lots of options here...prolly the best BBQ in SF and on par with most of the good in eastbay.
there are about 12 spots over ont his side of town and they are dwindling, sad to see no reviews of any of them...time to save this part of town before it is gentrified and all the soul of this corridor will be gone...like the niners...

sigh! I like this little place in the middle of dogpatch, and imagine plenty of folk will too...but...the food...is a mixed bag and I dont imagine it was an off night ....its what they do
The fried chicken was fried perfectly and pretty crispy and the inside meat moist but the batter lacked flavor, the ribs-3 of em-,texas style sweet mopping and melt off the bone good...the sides we got-mash and gravey...tasted like well packaged gravey and cold ice cream scoop of taters, left it on the plate, the Mac n cheese...tasteless as well, and oh I wanted it to be good...the collards needed the vinegar and smoked pork flavors not just a heap of greens...and the redbeans and rice-I had ordered blackeyed peas, also under seasoned and not interesting...
everything under 10 bucs, will eat here again, wont get smoothered anything as the gravy was aweful but...it is charming and good cheap eats...go dog patch!

This started out about three years ago as a garage bar filled with cholos and a pool table, then one day it was transformed into what I would call a nuevo latino/americano lets say alta california blend...the sould food thing above is just not right...anyhow its still in a garage it still tiny but the crowd has gone form migrants and cholo gboys to mission scenesters and the enevetable emmy's spaghetti shack denizens...the front porch is crowded and tough to get in to and the entrance is crowded with smokers,..but the food is fun and good...not since Tamal has an american latin place done the food right!

As much as I want to like this and I hope that they begin to adjust, now that they have two very good Italian on the same stretch of church as well as several other places making a change for this neighborhood into a true food destination. wierd huh?
anyway,Carpeted floors to dampen the sound dont work here as the hall is noisy, the wait staff a bit full of themselves and it seems to be coming from the kitchen. While the food is very good not great Italian modern, the wine by the glass program very good although the staff is not as knowledgable as they would like to think they are.
I would say I was once positive about here, but doubt I will return, too many better options just a block or two away.

The end of church street has several new restaurants, the French Bistro caty corner from here-great place, the other Italian at the end of the street-very good too!, Toast-American breakfast and serviceably good despite the lines and the sushi bar on the same block. and just down the way the neuvo Latino entry-Front Porch. Something good is going on over here.
This small lovely space with a couple heated tables out front a nice backyard patio and about 30 indoor seats serves as the name implies great modern Italian seafood. We sat early and between three of us ordered the entire menu. The only complaint-across the board was the lack of lemon to separate flavors. The oysters and the baked clams came with Meyer lemons, which just didn't do it. but the food was great, the room a little loud. Full cozy bar, good slim selection of wine by the glass, love to see this program upped a scosh, will eat here again, there are rough spots- service needs better training would be my pick.

wow, where does the time fly? this place has been here for ever, and every so often late at night I remember and end up having a munch...and every so often I go here for brunch. so whats to be said?
this can be hit or miss. plain and simple...lets see, last time out I did the one thing I know better than to do- had the gumbo. small portion watery, no flavor. time before that I had the fried chicken and got turkey in gravey ate it even after meakly asking if this was really the chicken...when told yes..I just tucked in as it was late and everyone else was eating...time before that I ordered something I cant remember and it was at best bad.

It was one of those perfect warm sunny sundays, and the tables outside were perfect to sit and sip wine and wonder why I dont move to this side of town, We did take out and got several pizzas and a sandwich, meatball..was so so..but the pizza was good! thin crispy crust with just the right amount of burnt bits to transport me to my favorite pizza place- Arturo's on Houston street in SOHO/West Village-so a hesitent but happy thumbs up!

Beautiful space with the best looking communal table I have seen. Sadly half full on a Friday night, not sure this place will make it as beautiful as it is and how much love is evident from the kitchen...
So we arrived to an over aggressive waiter who made us feel as if he was trying to turn us throughout the meal and interupted conversation over and over to get us to order. He made sure as to tell us all about the Michelin star and worked an upsale on wine and the chefs special, really pushing it, to the point that we didn't order it just because.
the food was well conceived but lacking in separation of all the complex elements. This was the story across the board on dish after dish, seafood lacking in an essential briteness and meat dishes under seasoned taking the possibility of spectacular dining down to just ok...I would say this could be an off night- but rather- think that this is the nature of the kitchen great ideas beautifully presented -nothing to write home about!

This small replacement for the world hot dog joint across from the safeway on Market is a fun small seafood place that serves great fresh seafood in the style of the shacks that dot the noeth east coast..highlights are the ipswhich steamers and the lobster rolls..very old school and informal! free parking in the streets between guerrura and market...I think this can be the casual seafood place this town needs!
I have had the oyesters and the iceburg lettuce salad on other visits..this being time three...great easy to deal with good casual staff! oh my partner had the calamari chiplotle roll which was tasty...the fries need work...but harken to old school....give em a try! Keep me eating the steamers forever..just like home!

I didn't even know there was a roy's here in SF. But some friends decided last week to eat out everynight at a different pacific pan asian hawaiin place and this was the second in our themed week out(rick's,sneaky tiki and the tonga room rounded out the tour-skipped trader vics and couldnt think of any more so ended up throwing in our sarongs and ate at a new french place in bernal the final night) went in around 6:30 and while the place was not packed mid week it slowly filled up as we sat. Lovely big room clean airy. good wine list...so no bowl drinks this night for me. The chicken salad was good and tasty. The mixed apps for two was stretched to four! tasty. the hamachi on wonton was delicious and the lobster crab thing was over the top. too much too bad as the small plates all rocked. the ono was tasty too. I would stick with small plates and drinks here. Felt a little out of place with all the traveling salesmen and tourists but when in rome!

I would like to update what I once wrote-"best crepes this side of brittany...lines are difficult out door sunny day seating at a premium but there is only one place to eat crepes in this town..I enjoy the lemon presse and the big salads as well"
update-10/31/06
I continue to eat here, but no longer consider this the stellar place it was say ten years ago. and while I still love the place, I no longer see this as truly as good as the Gallattes in Brittany. I now order a bloody mary and a seafood salad which are just fine if not better. Often the place is over crowded and slow. and the crepes have setteled into just good...

stoped in recently and found the place had changed to cheap fast food badly prepared and no longer the groovy old school bar room..in fact the night I was there, the bar room was filled with kitchen workers lounging around and the food was aweful!!!! they had closed off the dining room so the bar was the dining room and it was filled with families and workers andthe smell of bleach. when they first started as a wraps place, thank god trends die, I was in once and never thought anything of it. my kids liked it and so we started going. in that time we watched the slow then rapid transformation of this place into what is now becoming a mini chain. one on filmore and one soon to open in noe on 24th. for me they are(outside of the peruvian chinese place on mission and geneva) the original peruvian fusion place in SF. the ceveche can be a little acidic at this branchone and the sangria is only fair tasting and the lines can force you to eat elsewhere in this little village, butfor me it is the main courses here, pricy but yummy. As far as nuevo latino in this town this place, limon, destino, and tamal are all tops on my list.

Updated to say- 10/31/06 this place has changed hands at least twice since I wrote the review below. Have not been since the changes.
in the heart of club land, this quiet little spot radiates cofidence as it has no signage. the waitstaff is a little snooty but the bartenders do thier job well. the menu is eclectic but somewhat dated. I have to say that this is one of those places I would normaly eat in once and never return..ho hum been there done that...that being said the food is good, presentation nice and prices ok. Its nice to see more and more restaurant opening around 11th and 12th. We should all support the restaurants attmpting to bring this neighborhood back to life.

I think on a good day at the right time this is as good as dim sum gets in this city. the trick here is to understand that the dim sum changes with the hour and to get a rythem to the place...late morning mid afternoon lets you see a variety of food that spans the dim sum spectrum. the take out window is a great addition for hit and run dimsum. Parking is tough down here and lines long at the best eating hours. worth the wait! I just hope the sheep that love ton kiang never find this place. when rick's opened 10 years ago it was as a welcome relief from the lack of anything out in the outer avenues. The place is a mixture of touches of old san francisco-think washbag- and hawaiin. the long bar has tv's set to the game of the day and the bar tending staff treats the patrons like a local. there is occasional music. the food is good, but the side dishes are tired and remind one of blue haird hotel food, sogy veggies and orzo. if you can overlook this aspect the place is great. wine list could use work but out here in fog with the change of ethnicity rapidly changing the face of taraval street, ricks is a warm tropical island the bridges the gap.
