My dinner here, was pretty good. They have a big selection.
Try the Roti, it prepared by stretching the glutinous dough in a very unique style. It comes with a small bowl of curry. Tear the roti in a bite sized piece, dip into the curry. We also had the lamb rendang, very good and hearty.
For dessert, my choice was ice kacang, literally ice peanut, a mound of finely shaved ice topped with syrups, red beans, fruit and peanuts.

I walked down from Dolores Park, wanting to pick up some iced tea, instead I go here. They have really good inventive flavors, like, roasted banana and salty caramel... which I selected for my custom sundae. It was topped with caramel sauce, homemade brittle and whipped cream. It was a rare warm and sunny February day, so there was a line out of the door. It moved mercifully fast.
There are benches underneath the nearby trees. Dolores Park is a block away.
This place is going to be a classic.

This is a really good place to eat. Initially, it was crowded, filled with opera crowd. After 7:00 p.m. it the crowd quickly out the door for Van Ness. The crab cakes paired with the cole slaw was very good. The heat of the slaw was due to the Scotch Bonnet, rated at 150,000-325,000 Scoville Units. In comparison, the common jalapeño rates at 2,500-8,000.
The scallops were with creamy and flavorful sauce was great too.
They Thai style bouillabaisse was full of shrimp and shellfish, it's a good choice.
Tri - tip match with an onion sauce was tender and hearty.
The perfect side for this meal... Brussel Sprouts with candied walnuts.
My friend had the rootbeer float, she subbed the ginger ice cream for vanilla, and basically inhaled the thing. I had the chocolate souffle with caramel sauce... desert devoid of converation.
Music was good... service exceptional and very friendly.

Been to Hog Island when it first opened, at that point it was not too busy and it was expensive. There are other places cheaper, better and that have legendary reputations that I would rather go to.
This weekend, the service we received rude, crass service and it was still expensive. It's sad how popularity can get can affect you the wrong way.
You're better off elsewhere.

While visiting friends in the East Bay, we decided to get our fix of pho. We decided with Pho Oakland. We pulled into the lot and noticed two police cars, which for me, is an indicator of a good restaurant. They have a huge menu, easily over a hundred items. This morning, it would be Pho and it was an excellent choice. Perfect balance of flavors and the noodles were nice and firm. I will be going back.

My favorite Indonesian restaurant moved to Berkeley and is now called Jayakarta Restaurant. The food remains excellent, authentic and with the move a price drop.
They feature the best Sate in the Bay Area. Other good choices would be, soto betawi and kangkung terasi. The rendang is also really good. Something they feature in the weekend is gudeg, a famous dish from Central Java.
Indonesian food is as varied as the islands. Jayakarta feautures the Javanese style which is sweet & spicy in the flavor spectrum. I can't wait to go again.

Had dinner with a group this evening. What a great experience.
We had the Rack of Lamb, really good, the mango mint emulsion was a nice touch to compliment the lamb flavor. Also, we sampled the Ikan Goreng, fried whole striped bass, delicious. Laksa Lemak was really good too, with the perfect blend of coconut milk seafood and mushrooms. I requested the dishes to be "toned down. Some people in our party can't really handle the heat of chili peppers normally used in these dishes.
I'm sure doing this skewed an already wonderful review, how much better if the chef wasn't hindered by the easy on the chili request…
For dessert, the chocolate cake is a must.

I had lunch at the Ferry Building location for the first time since the migration from the Mission. Sadly, I still don't understand what the hype is all about. The wait person we had was not very personable, actually pretty abrasive. The service is not very good either, dishes were 30-40 minutes apart. In between dishes, the bus person asked if he could clear our table, he didn't know we had another dish coming.
The actual dishes themselves were bland. The Banh Xeo, "Vietnamese Crepe" as they call it, was presented with a pittance of lettuce and mint. The dipping sauce was bland and lacked the zing it normally has.
It's pricey, which is fine if it's worth it, but this is not justified. Perhaps it's the view.
If you want Vietnamese, don't get disappointed here, go to the Tenderloin or to Little Saigon where the real deal is.

McCormick & Kuleto's is in Fisherman's Wharf, a neighborhood I don't normally go to.
It's in a great spot with a fantastic view, perfect for taking your out of town friends.
They have a menu that is printed everyday, featuring items like. "Corvina Sea Bass, Bali Indonesia". I asked the waiter if the seafood actually comes from the exotic locations listed and he said yes. I'm a bit skeptical about his confirmation.
The prices are reasonable and for items that are going to shipped in from places like Australia, Bali, Fiji, Argentina, perhaps too reasonable.
They have an extensive wine selection, a Pinot was chosen and it was perfect.
The Corvina Sea Bass, Bali Indonesia was tasty and juicy.
It was a little bit on the bland side though.
The side of coconut rice was also a bit disappointing.
I guess when I read the description, I was expecting Balinese style food… flavorful & spicy.
The creme brulle was just ok.
Service was stellar.

Very clean place. It gets busy during lunch.
Had a great lunch there.
We were lucky to go on a day they had a special dish called Nasi Lemak.
It's a rice dish presented on a banana leaf.
The rice is cooked with coconut milk, instead of water.
It's surrounded with small mounds of roasted shredded coconut, sambal, veggies, shrimp, toasted anchovies and peanuts.
It's very very good.
My co-worker had the rendang, very good as well, rich sauce and very tender beef.
I also tried their black rice pudding... very good as well.
I can't wait to go there again.

A refreshing change for me was to try French Cuisine. Since I never had any French cuisine in this caliber, La Provence will be my reference.
The staff was attentive and kind... being very patient with my butchering of the french words in the menu.
The food to me, it tasted like what I would think comfort food would be in France.
We had Procencal Pie, goat cheese salad, the beef stew and the lamb...
Nothing disappointed. To end the meal we chose to share nice brulle with lavender honey, that was the perfect end to a delicious meal... most of the meals here are devoid of the heavy creams and butter often associated with French Cuisine, in fact our fresh bread came with a sun dried tomato spread instead of beurre. Had dim-sum at a very busy time, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm, there was already a queue.
But this place issued numbers, a first for me at a dim-sum place.
The place is cavernous and practically every seat was taken.
I was seated in the back, where I quickly found out was the best place to be;
all the carts and people bearing trays filled with food come out of the kitchen in the back. Dim-sum can be intimmidating for the unfamiliar, the pace here is fast, carts fly by, people shouting out names of dishes too. All in a rapid and precise pace.
Know that there is somewhat of a heirarchy, who you order drinks and other dishes is from the waitperson, who will be wearing a vest. Order dim-sum, from the people with the trays and carts. People here, customers and staff are very helpful, seek help if you need it. It's my new dim-sum favorite in San Francisco. I like the rolled stuffed tofu, sweet homestyle tofu-stuff was amazing, mango pudding.

Jaderock is right, the best time to go is during the happy hours. Try the jook/congee with shredded pork and century egg with the fried bread. Delicious.

You can find good Indian flavored ice cream here.
They have flavors here like, rose, cheese & cashew, pista.
For a special treat, try the kulfi, an Indian ice cream treat.
They also have various chaat, or Indian snacks such as samosas.
Their chai is also very good.
Need some basamati rice, teas or spices? You can get that stuff right next door.

Fresh noodles and clear flavorful broth... so good teamed up with the basil and lime. They also have the hard to find, Banh Xeo.

Great prices and good traditional breakfast.
you can get the special, 2 eggs, choice of bacon or sausage, pancakes or toast for under 3 dollars. Add home fries for only 75 cents. I've heard the place has huge lines on the weekends... I did not see any at 9 am on a Monday. They also serve a traditional Irish breakfast.

This is a really special place. I love the feel of it.
Try age nasu, the adam's roll and if you're lucky some uni.
The daily specials are listed on a board, or handed to you on a cute leaf shaped piece of paper... if available, make sure to try the roasted yellowtail jaw.
The nigori they serve is really good.

Really dense ice cream, the good stuff.
I like langka, halo-halo and toasted almond.
Long queues are pretty standard, but thankfully are pretty fast.
Now if they could only make up a mais-queso ice cream...

Excellent freshly prepared dishes.
Try their eggplant dishes or their boureks.
They have very sweet syrupy deserts and this excellent rice pudding.
If you ask nicely they have some tea available in those 3 oz. glass cups.
I'm pretty sure family run, has a good feel to it, though the man at the register can be could be considered "mean". He's pretty nice actually. The breads are all really good.

This place is just ok, so I can't help but wonder why throngs of people come here.
The owner is very unintentionally entertaining in a very weird way. He will take your order and basically order for you, claiming to be out of the dish you wanted... be prepaired for a surprise. Best for 4 or more people.

When you are asked for what kind of tea you want, request Purrh or Pu-li.
Very good inexpensive dim sum. No typical carts though, instead dim sum plates are carried on trays into the dining area. Point at what you want or point at what you like at another table. Very little english is spoken.
It's a smoky dark tea that matches dim sum very well.
They also have great garlic hot sauce on the all tables.
I'm pretty sure you can buy jars to take home.

Avoid getting seated downstairs, you'll get better service.

This place has really great 7 Course beef.
Request the anchovy pineapple sauce if you do not get it automatically.
My one and only issue, they provide you with the rice paper wrappers already dipped in water, this makes it more difficult to peel apart as dinner progresses.
The only solution is to eat fast. Some places provide you a bowl of hot water to re-hydrate your rice paper. 7 course beef is very good here, a once in a while "I want meat" fix.

Great fresh made to order sandwiches, all for under $2.25.
My pick, pork meatball with paté, "little spicey".
I like the basil seed drink in the cooler.
She also sells a myriad of asian chips and snacks.
There are some rice cake based snacks, usually filled with a sweet filling near the front window.

Indonesia has gone through a transformation.
There is a new owner and cook.
Their sambal terasi is really really flavorful and has that perfect sweet spicy combination.
I tried their sate kambing, the smaller sized sticks reminded me of the real thing in Java... smaller pieces but more sticks. I had their white rice also.
For dessert, Pisang Bakar Keju, a grilled banana topped with condensed milk, grated cheese and chocolate syrup.
Indonesian food really varies, even within the same island. They have a lot covered in their menu. I'm coming back to sample more for sure.
