Travel and food are my passions. I'm in constant search of the 'new taste'. I love SF because there are so many wonderful and diverse restaurants to go to. My reviews will always be honest and I will try to make it as helpful for the readers as possible. Restaurants be forewarned! I will be completely candid about the food and service I receive. I will rant or rave accordingly.

Positive This is one of those restaurants that you pride yourself in discovering. You realize how lucky you are living in a city that contains gems such as Mi Lindo Yucatan. I adored the location's charm, the waitresses easy smile, the kick of the salsa, the generous portions, and the exhiliration of new flavors in my mouth. Run like a stocking to this hidden treasure. Don't tell everyone you know, I don't want to encounter too big a crowd the next time I visit. Yeah, I'm selfish that way. PS Poc chuc Rocks! Review #20212 Lindo Yucatan

Positive Just like any other person out there, I have a love affair with pizza. I love that SF has such a variety of types of pizza that you don't have to be stuck with one kind. Let's see, I feel like deep dish tonight...Do I brave the long lines at Little Star? You'll find yourself blurting out, "What? this long line is the pick up your order line?" Hmp, and I thought I found a way to circumnavigate the rude service there. But I digress, pizza, different types, yes. Thank god for variety in SF. Let's see do I feel like thin crust tonight? Why, yes I do! I'm off to Cinecitta, the best thin crust pizza this side of the north americas. NB: Skip the chicken wings. They were kind of spongey (?) *shrugs shoulders* NB2: Parking is helacious, but you already knew that about North Beach. Review #20211 Cinecitta Bar and Roman Pizza

Positive Straits Restaurant, with us Head straight to Straits! Order: garlic noodles, mussels in garlic sauce, fried calamari, gadogado, origami sea bass, and the naan bread. Neutral Taqueria Zapata, with us If you're in the neighborhood and need a mexican fix, this is the place to go. Unfortunately, that's not saying much about this restaurant as there is a dearth of good mexican places in the Castro. Neutral Buckhorn , with us Not exciting and a bit bland and too pricey for what you get. The meat is cold. I suppose it's ok if you're in a hurry, which is mostly the case after spending hours looking for parking around metreon then falling in line to get your movie tickets. Tip: grab a burger at Mel's instead and get your movie tickets through Fandango and for Godsake take Muni! Review #19079 Buckhorn

Neutral Long Life Noodle Company and Jook Joint, with us If you were in a hurry and needed to watch your double feature at the cinema upstairs, this restaurant will do. I like their ground meat on lettuce cups and the mooshoo style burrito. The rest of their offerings, especially the soups, are uninspired. Snore. Positive We didn't realize how lucky we were that there was no line when we got there until a throng of hungry folks started to congregate in the entrance. Luckily we were seated quickly. Unluckily, the restaurant was already full when we got there and it took a good 35 minutes before our order was taken. During this time I kept trying to make eye contact to the waitress and even extending a pleasant "hi", but the skinnier of the the two waitresses was determined to ignore us until she's cleaned up other tables or served other people or whatever else she deemed important to do aside from helping us. I was ready to up and leave when the girthier waitress FINALLY took our order. I had the thick soy sauce broth soup, Yummmy! Karaage on the side, Tres Delish! I guess I should've consulted with SF survey before I went. I would've known to expect long waits and to avoid the weekend. But all those negative things aside, I had a pretty satisfying meal. Positive I have to agree that the food took foreeeeveeeerrrrr, but it was worth the long wait. I always get the chicharon pupusas and the sopa de res. Yummmy! You also get unlimited chips with hot salsa for free. Don't forget to grab the sweet cookie in the clear plastic container near the register. It's a dulce de leche cookie of sorts, you'll love it. Neutral I appreciate the effort, I really do. The concept of this urban-deep south-cosmopolitan-homey-industrial hybrid of a restaurant actually works. The metal covered menu and the small glass jars for your delicious iced-tea, the very dark ambience, the free cornmeal muffins (laced with jalapeno) it all gelled together and created a chic destination. Unfortunately, the most important factor seem to have been left behind. Yes, the crab popper appetizer was yummy and the dessert (pecan pie) was to die for, but the entrees lacked, um expertise. I had fried chicken, was ok nothing to write home about. My friends had the pulled pork and the jambalaya, both were underseasoned and just plain old blah. There you have it, there's plusses and minuses, which leads me to the gray dot. Suggestion: come here and enjoy a few drinks and order appetizers and desserts, skip the main dishes! Positive Loverly! Honestly, you can see that Tangerine has put some effort into what they are offering. The ambience is nice and cozy, the menu is innovative without being totally out there, and the service is gay! What more can you ask for from a Castro restaurant? I've eaten here a couple of times and I must say that the fish is always good, but the steak is outstanding. Don't miss out on the creative appetizers! Review #18787 Tangerine

Neutral Yawn, snore, burp! Uhm, it's ok food, it will fill you up, but I honestly can't remember what I ordered, some pasta dish that was so unmemorable I can't summon the name right now. The bruschetta for antipasti was good, but really, how can you mess that one up? Hmm, the prices were reasonable and the service competent, the ambience was quaint, but nothing really stood out in terms of what they served. Yawn, snore, burp? Review #18786 Caffe DeLucchi

Neutral I haven't been here for a while and there's a good reason why: It just wasn't memorable. The food was ok, for sure, but in San Francisco where there's a gazillion options to dine out, would you really want to go back to nyeh? The sides were unimaginative but the steak was good. Positive The worst place to find parking, the christmas lights around the window totally negates the whole chic, urban look of the restaurant. That said, I LOVE this place. Great service, delicious and creative dishes (loved the seaweed salad and the miso based cesar's salad and the burger with daikon slices), cool ambience and even cooler restroom. Positive Tastebuddy's tastebuds were titillated, truly! Gosh, I can't believe I spoke about myself with the third person. Sorry, I have bouts of blurriness, but I'm completely clear about My Tofu House. I'm absolutely enamored with this place. The service was friendly and the food was heartwarming. I've never had soft tofu soup before and this novel experience did not fail me. You can choose from combination meats, dumplings, seafood to go in your soup and the degree of caliente: mild to wild. Next time, I'll try the bibimpap, then the kalbi, then the bulgoki. I guess I'll have to return multiple times to really get the My Tofu House experience...well, no complaints here. Positive I think Moonstar is pretty good for it's value. I know, the siumai isn't as moist and the sushi can be a tad dry, but the spicy mussels soup is great and sometimes they have clams in black bean sauce, yummmmm. The dessert section is cool. Positive I'm happily jumping in the Raving for Miette Bandwagon. Skooch over, thanks. Ok, first of all the location - Fabu! The Ferry building is such a lovely place, I'm sooo happy they fixed it up, now it's a true SF destination. Secondly, the deliciousness that is Miette! A friend of mine had me try one of their rosemary infused shortbread cookies and I must say, I almost fainted. Not to be missed are their camarons (get the hazelnut flavored). Oh, hamburgers! I'm salivating as I'm typing here...PriceyShmricey, Miette is a perfect example of you get what you pay for. I can't wait to try the other SFSurveyors' recommendations. Neutral I like that the sauces (honey mustard or vinegar) are on the side, instead of slathered all over the meat. The ribs are sometimes very dry or too burnt. Neutral I first saw Beard Papa on one of my trips to NY. It was next door to Famous Joe's Pizza. It seemed really clean and popular. The name was one of those mysterious Japanese/English creation that makes you smile and grimace at the same time. It's what the hosts of Attack of the Show would refer to as "Engrish" But it's effective, as evidenced by the long queues formed by zealots here and in NY. Do I count myself as one of Beard Papa's fans? No. It was ok, but not oishi. The best item is the melty chocolate cake, but you can have a better version of this offering at Sweet Inspiration or at Triptych. If you have time to spare, go ahead and fall in line with a friend. Swap stories and tell jokes for about 20 minutes. When you get to the counter make sure to order the chocolate concoction. I doubt you'd be back too soon. Review #16868 Beard Papa

Positive It's fast food Korean style, nuff said. I didn't get the awful service that other reviewers mentioned though. The waiter forgot to bring the water we requested, and when I reminded him about it he seemed genuinely apologetic. I loved the stuffed mushrooms and the chicken bibimpap ( I was told it means mix mix rice, literal translation here). Although, the better restaurants would serve it in a hot bowl, Hahn's did not. Positive My friend Loren recommended this restaurant and boy am I glad she did! Make sure you make reservations as we were greeted with, "Oh, there are no seats availabe since we got the great reviews. Do you mind sitting at the bar?" To the bar we sat, I was very unlucky and ended up with the wobbly stool then the waiter/bartender (I like to call him Grumpy Pecs) gave us only two menus (there were three of us), so it was an inauspicious start at best, but Poleng more than redeemed herself once our orders started streaming in: salt and pepper crispy calamari, adobo wings with achara, beef tenderloin salpicao with bone marrow, garlic crab noodles and finally bread pudding with tapioca pudding. Everything was stellar, which leads me to this review. I will have to join the band wagon and add to the great accolades this new restaurant has been getting. Neutral I know, I know, it's a SF institution and I should respect it's authoritah, but really, my friends only like it because you don't have to order from the menu. You can point at the next table's dishes and say, "I want that but with prawns" and they'll do it. Positive I loved it! I'm surprised at some people's reviews. This restaurant is the real deal. There's a reason why it's so popular and it's not just hype. The shaking beef made me quiver, the caramelized prawns made me shiver, the papaya salad made me want to order more! Yes, it's a tad pricey, but in my humble opinion, a person is making a big mistake if he/she/he-she/she-he compares the prices found in a hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese restaurant to Slanted Door's prices. They're two different things. Much like comparing lychees to mangosteens. I wouldn't order Zuni's delicious skinny fries and get upset because it's not priced like it is at McDonald's. Positive Loved it! The brazilian beef was quite an experience, I guess it's the brazilian version of shabushabu. Avoid the cream corn soup, it tasted like it was doused with sugar. For appetizers, you must have the scallops and the puff pastries filled with cheese and meats. Yummilicious! A note about the staff - they're friendly enough, but our waitress forgot to bring our fried yucca and when we reminded her about it (midway through our dinner) she apologized and said she's going to get it. Neutral Get the chicken to go, as the restaurant is quite disorganized. The rotisserie chicken is very good. But when other reviewers say a big plate of chicken I don't get it. Maybe the night I was there they were serving quail or cornish hen as my chicken was tiny. Anyway, the chickenlet was perfectly marinated and the spices were a good compliment to the hummus I had on the side. Just ignore the unsmiling cashier. I think he just doesn't like to smile. As I was waiting for my food other customers ordered and not once did he smile, ok maybe once, but I'm betting it was a tick or a twitch. It couldn't have been a smile. Positive I've only eaten here once, but I like the laid back atmosphere and the pressed sanwich that I ordered. It was called Mediodia and it was made of shredded pork and cheese and a special sauce. I had it with a side of garbanzo bean salad. I thought it was yummy. I would love to come back and try the chicken sandwich or their empanadas. I think they also had Cuban desserts. Positive This restaurant has a very classy yet neighborhoody feel. The hostess was very pleasant and attentive. Our waiter was a little aloof, he looked like he was having a hard time smiling. The food was good, a tad salty. The carrot soup was clear and had a subtle flavor to it. My friends had the steak (don't smear the butter with anchovies all over this entree, it gets tooo tooo salty) and I had the handkerchief pasta (yumm, great thin, velvety pasta, a little salty). The desserts were, ummm, not as yummy as I wanted it to be. Overall, a good experience, not wonderful. Review #11149 Incanto

Positive I adore Triptych. The dishes are creative and very fresh ingredients were obviously used. The arugula salad with dates wrapped in pancetta was perfect. For my main entree, I had the scallops which was fantastic with the polenta and spinach sides. My friends had the lamb and the steak and they both loved their dishes. Positive Me encata Fresca! It's sooo savory and flavorful. I took my friend, fellow SFsurveyor Epikorean, for his birthday and I had a blast. We shared the crabcakes with basil and mango sauce (more like squirts around the plate) and then for our entrees I had the red snapper over the seafood stew which was very spicy and putanesca-esque. Epik had the grilled mahimahi which was equally tres delish! (we were tasting food from each others' plate) We shared the tres leches cake as well, hmm, so so, I've had better in our office Cinco de Mayo potlucks. All in all, a good time was had by a...oh, wait a minute. When we retreated to our respective abodes, Epik called me and screamed, "What the hell is in that food?! I have explosive diarrhea!" To which I meekly replied in that classic melody, "Um, happy birthday..." So, are you wondering why despite the subsequent Keopectate moment I still gave this restaurant the Emerald Dot of Yummy? Positive It was quite delicious, thank you. I tried SFMiss' recommendation the Tea Leaf Salad and boy was I pleased! The crunch of the peanuts, the flavor of the crushed shrimp, and the leafiness of the Tea leaves .... it was the oddest combination of taste and texture. It totally worked for me! While eating it I realized I was experiencing the very elusive "New Taste" I've always searched for. It reminded me of the Filipinos' bagoong (stress on the last syllable). We also had the stringbeans with seafood and the curry beef. All very sumptuous dishes. While the waitress was mixing the salad for us she explained that the dish itself and the process of folding in the ingredients, "...is a very traditional dish in Burma, this is what a typical Burmese family would have for dinner." With my friend's interest piqued, she asked the server how to say Thank You in Burmese. She replied, "Oh, I'm not Burmese, I'm Chinese." Well, I just had to emphatically reply, "Sheh Sheh Nee!" Positive I agree with whitecamero about not expecting excellent service, as chinese restaurants go this place has servers who aren't as rude as others, though. I think they polished their act pretty well. About five years ago they weren't friendly at all. Sourpusses all of them! I guess they've read awful reviews about them and decided to change their attitudes. Because really, the dim sum is fantastic and the only thing they needed to improve on was to 'westernize' their service a bit (meaning: let go of the frowns and "liberate" those smiles -wink). Neutral I can't really rave over this dim sum place. It just seems too antiseptic. I like dimsum restaurants that are frequented by asians and the servers don't speak english and it's totally ok because you just basically point at the dish you want when the trays come around. Knowing how to say thank you in cantonese/mandarin can pierce through that tough chinese waitress demeanor: Sheshenee or doche. Such is the world of true dimsum. Neutral There always seems to be a line for this place and I can't fathom why it's always so packed (the service suffers because of this). Sure, the sushi names are entertaining and they actually taste good, but it doesn't explain the clamor. One time, I ordered their fried oysters and, horror of horrors! when I took a bite, the oysters were frozen in the middle. They took it out of our bill (a good thing) and offered to replace it with fully cooked oysters. I declined. To those who can't relate, something happens when you bite into uncooked frozed shellfish. You lose your apetite. Oh well, if you don't mind dealing with the crowd and the not so smiley waitresses, then I guess Kitaro is ok. Positive I agree, this place is pricey. I don't frequent this place because of that reason. But, I live in this neighborhood and I like what this restaurant brings to Western Addition. Tsunami (an unfortunate name after the disaster) has a chic atmosphere that is sexy and comfortable at the same time. The sushi really is top-notch, but make sure to check out the specials. Once, their special was cubed fish on top of fresh mushrooms cooked tempura style. It was very delicious! The inventive sake cocktails are great, too. It doesn't hurt that the waitresses are cuties. Positive As you climb the grand staircase of Kinokuniya Plaza to the second floor you will be arrested by an enticing aroma that seems to come from a far away land called Yummy. Nope, that would be Sophie's Crepes. I heart this place. They make fresh crepes in front of your eyes and you choose what filling you want to put in it. Savory or Sweet? That is the question in front of you. Gelato with nutella and banana or Egg salad with lettuce and tomato? I've had them both and I must say - "Delish!" So go have your crepe fix, but you might want to take someone with you. These crepes are pretty big and sharing might be the only way to finish a whole one. Sophie's Crepes are 'oishi'! Negative I honestly want to like this restaurant, because it just looks soooo cool. It reminds me of chic New York restaurants I've been to. I just can't justify a positive review since the food is uninteresting (tasteless chicken) and the service curt (waiter never once cracked a smile- maybe just got botox). Can I really give it a positive review simply based on the movie projected on the back wall and the chic entry hallway? My answer is a firm and determined 'no!' If you're going to charge me $30 for a plate of bland laced with a big dollop of rude then, Foreign Cinema, you are not just foreign, you are alien. For only an alien would come here and assume that that is acceptable. This is San Francisco and we San Franciscans demand good food and good service! Yay! Hooray for me and my first negative review!!! You guys should do it, too. It's liberating. Review #5295 Foreign Cinema

Positive Oh, No! I need my Mitchell's Icecream fix now and there's a very long queue! Why is this ice cream shop so good? Why are locals obsessed with the flavors that they serve? Well, you have got to run like a gazelle to this establishment and taste for yourself. My favorite is their Ube flavored icecream. It is made of purple root that is indegenous to South-east asia. Sounds gross? I don't care what you think. More Ube icecream for me. If your taste leans more toward the mundane, then I'm sure you'll love their vanilla icecream, but I can't honestly recommend it since I haven't had it. My palate is a bit too exotique! Just kidding, I also love thier vanilla. But, really! You're in a place that serves Durian, Garlic, and Jackfruit ice cream, for godsake! Go for it! Order something unpronouncable and chances are you'll order it again the next time you find yourself at Mitchell's. Review #5291 Mitchells Ice Cream

Positive If you find yourself strolling around Hayes Valley and craving something inexpensive yet delicious, then walk in to Caffe Delle Stelle. I have eaten there many, many times and I've always left with a smile on my cute face. I always order the Peto, which is chicken breast stuffed with prosciutto and cheese over pasta in cream sauce. Once, I wanted to have it with tomato/cream sauce and the waiter obliged! My friends love their Osso buco. I know that it is not the chicest and most together restaurant, but the food is good and reliable, the service is efficient, and if you can overlook the minor misses you might learn to love it, too. Neutral This place really needs to get their act together! We had to wait twenty minutes despite the fact we had reservations. This place is noisy, but that is what Luna Park is all about - rowdiness. The food was fab, especially the mussels with fries. Always leave room for dessert, the smores are just too fun for words. Their mojitos have reached legendary status in San Francisco. It's fresh, it's modern, it's today. The reason I'm giving this restaurant a neutral review is because the wait staff needs to be nicer, especially if you have reservations and they've kept you waiting! It could be a great restaurant, if only... Review #5283 Luna Park

Positive Fuzio is lovely. I say this for various reasons: 1. It's inexpensive 2. The portions are not tiny 3. The food is good (try the firecracker pork fussili, it's hot!) I think sometimes the service is a little abrupt, though. Maybe the staff sometimes think that they are working in a posh restaurant, not an inexpensive pasta bistro. Or maybe they just had too much to drink the night before. Whatever reason, I still like the place. Don't let the the moody staff keep you away from your hot plate of yummy. Review #5263 Fuzio

Positive This restaurant has the best cream of mushroom soup you'll ever have in your entire life! Very rich and very fresh. Don't forget the main dishes, though. I love their stuffed cabbage rolls filled with fluffy rice and ground beef, but my favorite is their meatballs drenched in creamy sauce. It's a pity that they have raised their prices through the years, but that's life under George W. But if you want to treat yourself to something special, run to Old Krakow and fill your bellies with great Polish cuisine. It's guaranteed to be a favorite. PS, don't forget to learn how to pronounce the restaurant's name before you leave. I think it's written in the menu. Review #5262 Old Krakow Polish Restaurant

Positive Finally tried this restaurant everyone has been raving about. I've decided that these reviewers are true connoisseurs of California cuisine. I loved the glazed ribs served with kimchi-esque coleslaw, while my friend enjoyed his cornmeal breaded cod. Before that, we had the scallop potstickers which were terrific. We were too full to include dessert in our meal. We'll definitely come back to try them. The service was consistently attentive and the ambience was hip but not overly trendy. I recommend it to all lovers of food. While parking is difficult, its well worth the effort. Don't forget to make your reservations, this place is VERY popular! Review #5261 Firefly
