Positive Our lunch was delicious and expensive. But that's just what I expected from this restaurant with an ocean view to die for. I don't think anyone is coming here expressly for the food, anyway. The real draw for the tourists and locals alike is the amazing view. Totally worth the money. Review #19552 Cliff House Bistro

Neutral You have to know what you're getting yourself into before you go. If you expect big plates of meat and dairy, you're going to be disappointed. It's a healthy alternative to eating out, and it succeeds in making all of the items on the menu organic and vegan, all of which is uncooked. On that alone, I would recommend it to any vegetarian/vegan friend. However, the prices were ridiculous. I know organics cost more, but a bill for three cost over $70. That's for lunch. I won't be back unless someone else is buying. Review #19551 Cafe Gratitude

Positive We were fortunate enough to have a friend take us here for a lovely dinner. It was delicious, albeit expensive and not very filling. The ribs were excellent, and that would have been a great meal by itself. But we chose to order it as an appetizer, something I won't make the mistake of doing again! The atmosphere is dark, cool, and even romantic. Check out their upstairs if you have a date. Very chic! Review #19532 Oola

Positive The crab melt is on a soft bread roll that is both sweet and delicate. I think it made the sandwich go from good to great. The fish and chips are not the best I've ever had, but not bad. Lots of malt vinegar makes them better. They offer a variety of oysters, for you raw lovers out there. I'd skip the side salad, as it was pretty standard and not really worth it. Prices are about what I'd expect for a seafood joint, running about $25.00 for lunch. The service is friendly and quick, and the owner is extremely personable. I love their small local business feel, and hope they stay in business. Review #18648 Woodhouse Fish Company

Positive $8.00 for valet parking?! Yuck. But the rest of the experience at Home was great. The service was especially good. They were extremely accommodating to our large table. We sat in the back with the fireplace, which I never knew existed. The heat lamps kept the room toasty warm and cozy. The early bird special can't be beat. A soup or salad, entree, and dessert brownie for about $10...AND a glass of wine. The only thing? When they say early, they mean EARLY. We were there at 6 and they were already sold out of the special entree. Wah. Oh, and the warm lava chocolate cake? Don't miss it. Review #18647 Home

Positive This restaurant won out over the Balboa Cafe when we were deciding where to make our reservations. Firstly, the Balboa doesn't even take reservations. And second, Plumpjack Cafe is seriously heads and tails above them, service-wise, menu-wise, and atmosphere-wise...all the wises. I had the risotto, which was filled with exotic mushrooms and cooked to perfection. The crab salad appetizer was just that. Crab and some avocado. It was exactly what was advertised, and not too shabby. But the desserts blew my mind. We ordered the chocolate cake, which was insanely good. They served it slightly warmed, and with some fabulous ice cream. The other dessert was just as fabulous...a poached pear with berries and caramel ice cream. I thought my husband was going to have a heart attack when he saw the elderberries sitting on the plate. They aren't grown here locally, and he loves them to death. All in all a terrific dinner, albeit quite pricey. The entrees are about $30, and Review #18645 PlumpJack Cafe

Positive Yesss...a great alternative to burgers, over-cooked pad thai, and overpriced salads! Out the Door has a great menu with a lot of options to choose from. I had the beef and peppers dish, which was absolutely delicious (although a tad fatty and tough.) I also tried the banana fold dessert, which was served with marscapone cream. It's not the first time I've tried it, and it didn't look the same. The creme anglaise was missing...wah. I missed the calories and fat, I guess! Review #18641 Out the Door

Neutral Not the greatest BBQ I've ever had, but it's decent enough for the Avenues. I split the combo with my husband and he loved it. So much so, in fact, he ate the entire thing, leaving me bits and pieces of meat here and there. Sad. Our marriage is such a farce. He'd let me starve for a good rib. Siiiigh. The prices were also higher than I'd expect for the quality and the amount of food they gave us. All in all, I'd have to give it a big, "Meh." Review #17304 Roadside BBQ

Neutral Gah...bleah...yuck...nnnn...that's about it. I can't say anything good about our meal, because I'm still trying to digest it and it just won't go away. I'm not sure why, but they seem to have gone down a grade in their meat department. The food here used to be so much better than it is now. The only thing about Chevy's that still holds true is the service...it's still very good. And the waiter we had worked his tail off. Kudos to him. Review #17279 Chevy's Fresh Mex

Positive My first experience with Filipino food, and I wasn't exactly blown away. I thought the service was terrific...the woman who served us was absolutely wonderful. But the food? It was delicious, for being what it was...fattening, meaty, and filling. But it's not my cup of tea. I ate far more than I should have, considering how much saturated fat is in one of those servings...and did NOT feel too great about it later. If you love Filipino food, you'll love this place. It's authentic to a painful degree. But if you're into Californized fusion food, like me, you'll want to pass on it and go elsewhere. Patio Filipino doesn't deserve a Neutral or Negative review based on my dislike of Filipino cuisine, however...as I mentioned before, the service was exemplary. Review #17278 Patio Filipino

Positive Yum! I'm loving Osha Thai! Every one is wonderful. This one is a little more downscale than the others ones, and it's not as pocketbook friendly, but it's still worth a try. Being in the Embarcadero, you have a limited amount of choices anyway, and Thai food is better than most. Positive By far not the best meal I've ever had. For Italian food, the flavors were surprisingly mild...not unpleasant, just slightly bland. I think my palate is a bit unsophisticated, and I've decided that is the reason I didn't fall over in love with my dinner. I ordered the petrale sole and the beet salad. The salad was not great, although the beets were sweet. The sole was too salty for my taste. It just wasn't the Italian meal I was looking for. However, the service was great and the cause was awesome...25% of the bill donated to the Aids Emergency Fund and the Breast Cancer Emergency Fund. You can't go wrong with that. It made the meal taste that much sweeter! Review #17276 Ristorante Bacco

Neutral Although the Marina is quite lovely on warm, sunny days, I was not blown away with my lunch at Rose's Cafe. The chopped salad was simply that...a bunch of lettuce chopped up into little pieces with a drizzling of gorgonzola salad dressing on it. There was nothing else on it, aside from a little radicchio. I also ordered the antipasto plate, which was generously piled with meats, but about four olives and four cornichons. The meat itself was not great, and I couldn't even eat the salami, because it was far too spicy and a bit greasy for my taste. My gal pal had a chicken sandwich that was slathered in gooey cheese, and nearly unrecognizable. She ate almost half before giving up completely. Not the most memorable meal. Not the most offensive, either. But I'd be willing to go back to try their breakfast/brunch menu, which I hear is much better. Review #17128 Rose's Cafe

Positive Really good eggplant dish...really rich sauce, though. Pretty reasonable prices. They give generous portions, so don't go overboard when ordering. Try the tofu dishes, because they're all pretty decent. But the vegetable dishes are by far the better choices. No MSG, as far as they tell me...but I usually know after my tongue swells up if there has been MSG in my food. Good news! After eating here, my tongue is a normal and a healthy pink. Enjoy! Positive I had an amazing steak sandwich at the Bistro, and I didn't even have to order it! I ordered the shrimp louis salad, which was sub par compared to the sandwich my hubby ordered. It was all tender steak with a big layer of blue cheese crumbles inside. I couldn't stop stealing bites, and then, it mysteriously...disappeared. Apparently, I can perform magic! He also ordered the crab bisque, which was equally delicious, and also mysteriously...disappeared. I'm taking my act to Vegas, baby! Review #17015 Nordstroms Cafe Bistro

Positive The crab was good, but the fish was amazing! Tender, melt in your mouth fish with a drizzling of a light and sweet sauce...delicious. I loved the garlic noodles, which were a bit too sticky for my taste. I tried to get a forkful and ended up with a huge wad of it on my plate, which I promptly ate up. Probably not the best place for a diet. The other dishes weren't anything to rave about, but I would recommend PPQ based on the fish and the pricing alone. It's far less than Than Long and more accommodating as well. Less pressure to be fancy and proper, too. A fun place for a big family gathering! Review #17014 PPQ Dungeness Island

Neutral Brunch at Foreign Cinema does indeed feel like a foreign experience. We walked down a long, cold entryway and into the large patio outside. It was covered with heating lamps, all of which were off, even though it was quite chilly. We ordered a "pop tart"...raspberry...and it was delicious. My crab frittata was a bit dry and uninteresting, while my hubby's Croque Madame was absolutely dripping with gooey cheese. One bite and he was full. The atmosphere put me off a bit, because I felt like it was too much Asphalt Jungle and too little A Room With a View. Too bad they allow smoking in the patio...it was extremely stinky and made eating unappealing to both of us. We'd definitely consider eating indoors next time, and perhaps we will return for dinner instead. Review #17013 Foreign Cinema

Neutral This restaurant was recommended to me as the perfect romantic anniversary restaurant, so I quickly made reservations. But it wasn't nearly the perfect restaurant I pictured. In fact, I wasn't thrilled with the atmosphere at all when I first walked in. There was an outdoor seating area, which seemed dark and impersonal, and then the inside was a large, loft-like area with high ceilings and a modern feel. Not the romantic place I thought it would be. However, the food was very good, and we enjoyed our meal very much...the only thing that came across as negative was when my hubby had his wine glass confiscated by a server before he was finished savoring the last drop. You see, he's got this thing about saving his favorite taste for his last taste, so he kept a tiny little bit of wine left in his glass for the end of his meal. When the waitress took the glass, and the tiny bit of wine in it, she didn't look, speak, or otherwise communicate with us at all. Yikes. Review #17012 Chez Spencer

Positive Firecracker Pork...YUUUMMM...I can't stop ordering this dish. I try to order other things, but I keep coming back. Unless you like having the skin burned off your tongue, order the Habenero sauce on the side. Then, apply sparingly. Positive ARTICHOKES. Holy aioli dipping sauce, Batman! This place is awesome during artichoke season, lemme tell ya. I ate several times here over the course of a couple of months, just because of their artichokes. They were divine. One thing, though. There was one time we went when they served us a mini-choke. It was Oompa Loompa sized. But it only happened once, mind you. Desserts are also very good, but I'm a sugarholic, so my opinion may be slightly skewed. Review #15526 Max's on the Square

Positive I love the Blue Jay. It's great on the weekends when I feel like stuffing myself sick. They have great biscuits and brunch dishes. I always order the Arnold Palmer (ice tea and lemonade). The lovely waitress refilled my glass the last time I sucked one down. The portions are generous and the price is justified. I think the only thing I didn't like was the block it is located on. Neutral Not my cup of tea, I suppose. It's a bit too hip for me. I tend to gravitate more towards the elegant but welcoming restaurants, of which there are many in S.F. This particular restaurant had a little bit of an uppity attitude. An air of distain, perhaps. IMHO, it's not the kind of place one would feel comfortable if they were, oh, say....me. But the above complaints are not so bad that I would give the retaurant a negative rating. In fact, the food was fair. The prices? That's debatable. Positive I ate a wonderful meal, and it wasn't entirely because of the great food. The owner/manager of the restaurant was so amazing! He was charming and sweet, and doted on every customer like we were eating at his dinner table at home. It wasn't overbearing in the least. He just floated from one side to the other, quietly instructing his severs and busboys to fill water classes and offer more bread. He asked us twice if we were enjoying our meal. YES, we did. The appetizer we chose was a grilled shrimp with a white corn salad. Together, they tasted fabulous. We also both had the beet salad, which came with a warm goat cheese studded with roasted pistachios...yowza! It was absolutely lovely. Sit outside on warm days, for the full effect of a bistro. Positive This place is evil good. I had the infamous sweet potato fries, and the waitress casually suggested we get the side of ranch dressing instead of the ketchup/catsup. Oh my good God, was that a deadly combo. My stomach was in hog heaven...for about an hour, and then my stomach punished me severely for eating fried food and dairy. TOTALLY worth it. Positive Excellent! We had a fabulous meal here. My hubby had the Niman Ranch Braised Short Ribs with rosemary spaetzle, swiss chard and haricot vert salad for $20.00 which was fabulously delicious and made him moan yummy noises all throughout dinner. I had the less interesting, but still tasty, Wild Mushroom Ragout with baked polenta, fava beans, thyme and davero ollive oil for $17.00. I did not make the yummy noises, however, and was feeling jealous about not having ordered the short ribs instead. Hmph. Reservations are recommended. Neutral Aside from the scary Korean rave music blaring from the speakers that were set right by my head, the food was decent for what they charge. The service was pretty bad, but I'm assuming that's because the servers were young, hip, pretty and chatting it up with pals behind the counter. I had the Bibimbap, which wasn't generous, but filling enough. The meat had these little...fat pockets...brrrr...reliving it makes me want to swear off meat forever. Really, I may do it!
