Negative BLAH! I heard a lot of cool things about this place but it didn't live up to the hype. The decor was nice and the atmosphere fitting for the Pac Bell Park area. However, the food was mediocre and because of the high prices I had to give a negative review. There is so much better Mexican food out there for a lot less. Maybe the main appeal is for Tequila aficionados?? I'm not a tequilla expert but their margies taste the same as anywhere else. Review #15473 Tres Agaves

Positive Came here with a large group of friends and the staff was great and very friendly. The waitresses were very good about keeping the c***tails flowing. Food was good as I got to sample off of everyone else's plate-- not a very big selection though. The carrot soup was yummy and the roast chicken was one of the best that I ever had. The thing was so tender it melted in my mouth-- great flavor too. Cool interior, dark and moody, gets a bit noisy. Prices are mid ranged. Parking is ample. Review #14422 Slow Club

Neutral The food here is good but not great. The sushi menu is better than their entree menu in my opinion. Admittedly their Hamachi is pretty good and has made my eyes roll back a few times. The service here has always been good but I have to agree with the others who say that the Dj thing just doesn't jive with the rest of the place. At this establishment, I'd be happier witout it. If you're going to go that route with the sushi and techno music, you can't half a** it. I think you really have to go all out with the decor, atmosphere, and attitude of the staff. The staff here are really nice, down to earth, some are a bit on the older side, conservative, definitely not hipsters-- so in my head I'm thinking, "Who's idea was it for the loud techno music???". Just seems like the DJ is a tag on rather than something that is integral to the place. Review #14421 Ryoko's

Positive This place is good for Chinese food... Not drive across the city good, but I'm in the neighborhood kind of good. I've eaten here many times and the food is consistent and I don't recall ordering a dish that I didn't like. My favorites are the pecan prawns, chow fun, and princess chicken. Service is kind of... eh. Atmosphere is not that of a tranquil garden but it is pretty mellow and is more pleasant than most other Chinese restaurants. Prices are average. Neutral If you want good food, then avoid Mel's. Even diner staples such as burgers, fires, and shakes are marginal. There are better late night night joints to get good food such as Grubstake. But if you're in a nostalgic mood and want to do the whole 50's doo-wop thing, then Mel's isn't so bad. I favor the Geary location, then Lombard, and I avoid the Van Ness one. Positive Great intimate restaurant that has a nice San Francisco feel. Food is good and prices aren't bad considering the location. Service has always been good too. Nice place to take a date and walk around Nob Hill afterwards. Review #14262 Nob Hill Cafe

Positive If you want a guaranteed fun time dining, drinking, dancing and goofing around-- this is the place to go. It's always fun to see who can order the most zany looking tropical cocktail. To cap off the night, take a ride up the glass elevator in the Fairmont and enjoy the view. Review #14261 Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar

Positive Only come here if you're not hungry and you just want to admire the great ocean views. Food is not great or cheap but with the location, you'll be willing to put up with it at least once. I would just order some appetizers and relax with a few beers-- If you don't get a window seat, well then, there goes most of the dining experience here. The WPA murals and small exhibits are also interesting. Nice way to end an afternoon at Golden Gate Park. This is a borderlne rating for me. Review #14218 Beach Chalet Brewery

Positive Another one of those places that reminds me what it feels like to be in San Francisco (well the SF that I came to know in the 80s at least). Charming little place in a residential area. Unpretentious and a nice place if you want to get some decent seafood. Great for locals. Plus with free wine while waiting for a table-- I really look forward to a long wait here. Neutral First impressions-- The place has a great vibe and has a nice classy atmosphere. Nice decor. The hostesses and servers are friendly and on the spot. We only had the appetizer plate but it was still enough to fill the both of us. However, the bill still came out to be in the medium range. It's somewhat pricey. Based on what we ate, I didn't think the food was all that great. The srhimp sticks were average, the ribs were actually kind of dry, not tender and just plain salty, and the potstickers could have easily been from the frozen section. The Hawaiin Martini is ok if you like sweet drinks-- not really my style. If you're going to have dessert the Melting Hot Chocolate Soufflé is pretty damn good though. Because of the quality of food vs price, Roy's left me feeling neutral. I'm sure I'll be back to sample more of the menu in the future though. Review #14214 Roy's

Positive Definitely worth checking out at least once. The entertainment was fun but it seems like it's more effective for the out of towners and conservative people for the shock value. The food we had was good but had no lasting impact, the show is definitely the reason for going here. Watch out for the annoying bachelorette party girls adorned with plastic penises. Negative It baffles me how *overrated* this place really is. I honeslty can not find one redeeming thing at Ebisu. First of all, there's always a long wait-- which I don't mind if the food is great. That takes me to point two, the food is not great and mediocre at best. The fish was not fresh and I noticed they didn't use the best cut for my Hamachi. The rest of the sushi was comparable to most other average sushi places. The miso was awful, if it wasn't for salt, there would be no other flavor. Salad was just as bad. If you like teriyaki, you can do just as well buying a bottle of Kikoman. Then there's service. Forget about it. Our waitress didn't check on us once. To top it off, there's not much to say about the atmosphere and decor--very boring. I tried Ebisu 2 other times and left with the same feeling. If people truly love the dining experience here, then they are missing out on soooo many other better Japanese restaurants that can offer it all. Review #14199 Ebisu

Positive One of my favorite places overall for taking a date. Quaint little family owned restaurant, romantic and intimate with candle lit dining. The place is usually pretty quiet and it's easy to have a conversation. The tapas are great and filling enough to where I never have to order an entree. My favorite are the empanadas. The sangria is awesome and nothing less than a pitcher will do. Occasionally, I've seen a guitarist playing there which adds to the romantic setting. Price is in the medium range. Positive Hands down my favorite burger joint in the city. Burgers are juicy and tasty, milkshakes aren't too thick, and I absolutely love the beer battered onion rings. The workers are down to earth and friendly. Fun atmosphere. Oh yeah-- great place for drunk people watching. Review #14197 Grub Stake

Positive Food-- Very tasty. We must've said "damn this is good" about 6 times. I went with the recommendations of "sfmiss" and I am in total agreement. The Yangtze River Lite Fry, reminiscent of Robert Smith's hairdo, is scrumptious and is a work of art in it's own right. The Fish on a Vine... my my my if you like sweet food that's breaded, then this is a must have. Service-- Absolutely impeccable. Easy reservations. I love it when the hostess takes it upon herself to pick out a cute spot for a couple. Our waitress was super friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. Everyone was on the spot. Even the manager checked on us. Atmosphere-- Very moody and romantic. Eat dinner then take your date on a stroll on the Embarcadero. However, as an anachronist, it was not the 1930s decor I was hoping for. Price-- Definitely no value meal here. This would not be a regular casual dining place for me but an occasional special treat.
