I have lived in and around Hayes Valley for about 100 years and somehow never been to Flipper's. I went a couple of weeks ago and have already been back twice. While not the smoothest of servers, our waitress was very down to earth and just doin' her job. I especially love you get salad AND fries with your burger. Not the absolute BEST burger in town, but certainly a bargain for the price. If you want fancy, skip Flipper's. If you want lots of food and a comfortable spot, go immediately.

A friend's family was in town from New York and we were looking for a place for their last night in town; nothing too overwhelming. On the recommendation of a co-worker (whose food opinions I wholly trust) we decided to try the Liberty Cafe. We were not disappointed. Fortunately, we were there by 5:30 and endured no wait whatsoever (we were the first customers that night) and everything we ordered surpassed expectation. I couldn't understand people raving about pot pie, but I now see why they do it. All the plates were very attractive, and everyone enjoyed their meal. The guy serving us seemed to really enjoy bringing people good food and only helped to make this an even better experience.

I had a wonderful meal here recently. I was on my way to the ACT and trying to think of somewhere to spend about an hour. I was the only customer in the restaurant (early on a Monday) and feared I had made a mistake in my choice. I could not have been more incorrect. The server was gracious without being overbearing and the food was delicious. I had the sesame encrusted sea bass and will definitely be back for more. Very cozy (and could be very romantic) spot right in the middle of downtown!

I work right across the street and am very happy to have this as an option. The grilled chicken and banana sandwich was surprisingly good; I just wish you could order a half portion. No pretense to the cafe or service, just a nice little spot to enjoy in Laurel Heights.

What a pleasant surprise when a friend drug me to Macy's basement to grab a bite to eat. I have since returned numerous times as you can't beat this place for taste, efficiency or price. The pizza special has to be the best deal on Union Square and the sandwiches and pasta dishes are all great. It's a very hurried and chaotic atmosphere, but its only a quick bite while shopping. I won't make the mistake of just passing through again!

A little dated but still a required San Francisco destination. The food could use a spark or two but the atmosphere makes the trip worthwhile.

This was my introduction to Ethiopian/Eritrean fare and I was totally impressed. We had a rather large group and were treated like royalty. The couple who own the place make every effort to ensure each customer is satisfied. One of our group was vegetarian and the vegetarian dishes here almost (almost) won me over. I recommended this as an interesting venue for a gathering to celebrate the birthdays of a couple of other friends, and that group loved it too! Very warm and inviting way to experience some African cuisine.

I was introduced to this restaurant at a friend's birthday party. The staff was so friendly I thought maybe that was what made the food seem so good. I went back and was just as impressed on my return visit. I'm not overly adventurous with exotic fare, but I really like this very comfortable spot.

I absolutely love this place but the problems getting a table preclude going. I'm not sure if reservations would be the answer, but there must be some way to curb the confusion. Food is good, service is acceptable (sometimes good), the you can't just "plan" on going unless it is the only thing on your agenda.

Way more casual than I had expected, I almost hate to admit that it has taken me all these years to make it to Perry's. Maybe a hold-out from its uber-straight reputation a la Tales of the City? In any case, we had a very enjoyable meal that was the closest thing to home cooking I have experienced in years. The wait person was just adorable and very attentive without being obnoxious. I will definitely be back to make up for all the years I've missed.

I took my 88 year old Dad here when he was visiting and he loved this place. The food is just a bit off regular Italian fare, but I found it quite interesting. The waiter spent more time trying to pinch girls passing by, but that just added to the atmosphere. I like this place a lot

The first time I went here was on my birthday, before going to see Lestat. It was during Dine About Town and I was very impressed with their "cheapo" prix fixe menu. Everything was very tasty and the service was outstanding. It has lived up to expectations on return visits.

What a find! Happy hour at the Hurricane Bar is truly a San Francisco event. The barflies go nuts over the thunder storm and the enthusiasm is infectious. If you're going to one of the little theaters on Sutter Street, you can't beat the $7 all-you-can-eat appetizer bar. Plenty for a meal and you can't beat it for the fun! A definite stop with the tourists.

Went in for lunch and the place was pretty deserted, but thoroughly enjoyed the food. I'm sure the ambiance kicks in with the crowd and I look forward to a dinner here.
December 06: Returned for dinner and Destino lived up to every expectation. We had to resist over-ordering as everything was fabulous. I thank the gods that we saved room for the dessert; the Suspiro was unforgettable!

I'm on the negative side of neutral on this one. I seriously do not see what all the excitement is about. My friends absolutely loved it, but I thought they were WAY overpriced for the quality of the food. The decor is a trip, but closer to cheesy than exotic.

It pains me to be less than enthusiastic about Bagdad Cafe as it seems we have years of history (well, a few anyway). They used to have the absolute best burger in town (for the price) and the waiters were always a hoot to surreptitiously watch. However, as the years have passed, Bagdad's attempt to "upgrade" leaves me a bit cold and the outrageous way they up and up and up the prices is really just too bad. If I am going to spend that much for a hamburger, I'll go to Chez Maman and opt for a really cute waiter!

What a pleasant surprise this place was! The maitre d' led me to believe it was yet another snooty "hip" spot, but the waiter was totally down to earth, made great suggestions, and we had a delightful dinner. The salmon croquette were nothing like I remember my mom making and the swordfish was also very tasty. Neither of us drink and that sometimes brings out the worst in a wait staff, but these folks were very nice and just attentive enough to enjoy a good meal and private conversation. Love it, love it, love it.

I consider myself a bit of a hamburger snob and this place ranks no. 1 in my book. It is terribly small and you often have to wait, but the food is delicious. Nothing too pretentious, just good and satisfying. And besides, the snippy French waiter is worth the wait! This whole block is an enclave of interesting "must see" spots.

It is just unbelievable to me that this place can serve a steak dinner for $13.95, I dare you to find a restaurant with better prices. The staff all seem so earnest in their efforts to make your visit enjoyable. I also love their omelettes and the folksy feel of the menu. The only problem I have found is that the portions don't allow taking advantage of the dessert menu which features the best hot fudge sundae in town and also an unforgettable banana split with hot buttered rum sauce.

This is the neighborhood hangout. Even on game days, you can generally get your order fairly quick and then hang out as long as you want. My favorites are the clam chowder and the turkey sandwich with a little balsamic vinaigrette (named after Rich and Raquel Aurilia when he played for the Giants and they lived across the street). They have a great selection of smoothies, some of the best chocolate cake you'll ever taste, and even Mitchell's ice cream. I love the outdoor seating -- quite the peaceful spot (especially considering its only 2 blocks from AT&T).
