Positive I love this place! I've had almost every type of dumpling that they offer here, and they are all good. I use my chopsticks to dump them lovingly onto a spoon so I don't accidentally lose any of the juice inside of them. It's amazing how the the dumpling skin can hold the juices inside, and it really bums me out when I manage to let it escape before getting to my spoon. The onion pancakes are good, and the sweet soy is a nice way to neutralize the grease. Their is also this doughy glutenous fried meat puff (#5 I believe) which is also very greasy greasy good. *The second "greasy" is not a typo. The stir fried Shanghai noodles are just as delicious as their soupy noodles. The service has always been good, and they all seem very cheerful in my experience. They even have those nice bio-degradable take home boxes for the environmentally conscious! Almost everything I've had there has been good, from lion's head meatballs to chicken with sticky rice in the gigantro clay potty like Review #19989 Shanghai Dumpling King

Positive Not like any Chinese food I had before, but I'm lovin' it. Actually, that may be good enough a reason to come check this place out. Not that there is anything wrong with Chinese food per se, but it's nice to have something that is familiar (like dumplings), but still different (lamb inside?!?). By the way, the lamb dumplings=tasty. Mandarin lamb=hella good (hope you like cumin). The onion pancakes are nice and crisp, and seem more like a regular Chinese onion pancake crossbred with some roti, or a paratha perhaps. They even have those stuffed with meat or veggies. The green beans with the tofu is good too. I've only been twice so far, but I'm going to eat there again. Hi Bonnie, Rudy here, I see you all up in Nga's Flickr site :) See you around! Neutral Taco Tuesday... The fish one is good, the pork one is pretty ok, and the beef one is dry and pretty tasteless. They were $2.50 a piece. The only reason this isn't a negative review is because of their outside patio area and their beers. Plus, I haven't really tried anything else there. So if you're going, I would suggest you give anything but the tacos a try. But if you must, get the fish one, which is a deep fried fillet in a tortilla and not much else. Positive chicken and waffles... can't go wrong with that I'd say. Had the smothered chicken with my waffles and I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles. A bit pricey for chicken, but the breast meat was pretty moist, which is good. I hate paying a lot for fried chicken only to have half the order come out a bit on the dry side (see my complaint about Q's). While the smothered chicken was good, I traded one of my pieces to my friend for one of his non-smothered pieces, and I'd say I like the non-smothered one better. The gravy on the my chicken was tasty, but I guess I prefer it without it. Although I would get it again, just depends on my mood at the moment I guess. The waffles were pretty big and soaking with butter, only because I smeared it all in, and the syrup was thin-ish but flavorful, without being overwhelming. The strawberry lemonade was nice and sweet. I'm going back Review #19986 House of Chicken N Waffles

Positive went there for the first time since they've re-opened, and it was delicious. the prices were a bit more than I remember, but it is definitely a lot nicer in there. I always loved the beef stew when I went before, but today I tried different things. I had the garlic noodles, which were tasty and heavy, as I expected, and the papaya/mango salad, which was also good. The biggest difference however (as I figured the food would still be good) was the excellent service. The staff was friendly and my water glass was never empty, which is always a bonus point with me. I will definitely try the beef stew again on my next visit to see if it is as tasty as I remember Review #19984 Pho Tu Do

Neutral Only ate here once. Typical diner type deal here. I believe they sell breakfast until 5 pm. Ordered the Monte Cristo, it was fried in butter, yet it wasn't all greasy and drippy when it got to me, and that was good. The ham slice inside was nice and thick-ish, but the turkey was a bit thin-ish. The cole slaw that it came with came out a few minutes after the sandwich, but I'm sure that's the exception instead of the rule. My friend's omelette looked like it wasn't greasy as well. I shoulda tried it, but maybe next time. Looking across the counter at all my friend's orders, nothing seemed spectacular, and all the portion sizes seemed decent. Relatively pricey considering that you can get larger quantities of food that you really like elsewhere for the same price. If this place was like a buck or two cheaper. Not bad, but not wow, so neutral it is. Nice staff. Tables for two or four, and any party larger than that may be squished if they were to rearrange tables for you Review #17783 Cafe Rain Tree

Positive There was a little bit of wait on the Sunday morning I went, but the the food was worth it. I actually ordered the corned beef hash with sunny side up eggs, and I liked it, but my friend's pumpkin pancakes was the star of that meal. If I go again, I'm definitely getting the pancakes. The maple syrup that it was served with was very thick and tasty as well. The staff was nice, and my water glass was constantly filled. Definitely get the pumpkin pancakes. Review #17754 FatApple's

Positive Pizza is pretty good, but I'm writing this because they have pretty good drink specials such as $2 red stripes (on Fridays I believe). I had tried two pizzas there and the one I ordered was a pesto chicken I believe, and I liked that better than the one my friends had ordered, which was kind of sweet, and bar-b-que-ish. Still gets a positive since they can host a fairly large group, play sports on their big tvs, and feed you decent pizzas while you get drunk, otherwise I'd give a neutral. I'll probably go back at some point. Review #17722 Pizza Orgasmica

Neutral Food was just ok, I didn't go in a group, and there was no entertainment the night I went. No hookah smoking for me as well, it seems I missed the whole experience that everyone seems to enjoy. The "hot sausages" were pretty much like hillshire farm sausages from the grocery store, so I say avoid that. The hummus was good, but there was this one paste like thing that was ordered (sorry, forgot the name, but it came with a pickled radish) and it was a bit salty. The pitas were warm and abundant, and the staff kept filling my water glass, which I always appreciate. I may try to come back some time, mostly to see all the fun stuff, and partly to give the food another chance. Review #17721 Kan Zaman

Neutral My dish was a little more salty (pulled pork with some pasta) than I would've preferred, but my friend's porkchop was way delicious. The ribs we had for appetizers were okay in that they were a bit too sweet for my taste, but if you like that kind of thing, then you would like it I guess. The meat on the ribs was pretty tender. Also had some spring rolls, no big whoop since you can get them better, cheaper at most Vietnamese restaurants. I don't foresee myself going back anytime soon. Review #17523 Octavia Lounge

Positive I'm giving them points on the strength of the peanut butter milkshake. I've been ordering these since when I used to work at the sauna shop across the street (which is now closed), and that was the one thing I really liked. The burgers are creatively named, and got some funky things in them (beets, coleslaw, pineapple, etc.) and that's all good and well, but the burgers were just okay. Not bad, but not killin' me. I want me a murder burger (r.i.p-damn you redrum!!!). I want an indulgent burger that I should only be able to got to eat every so often. Parking also sucks here, but it's pretty pedestrian friendly-bus lines and bike racks. Oh, I recently went in to get a PB shake, but they were out of vanilla ice cream, but the good thing was that they made me one with cookies and cream instead (although I was initially thinking chocolate PB shake), I never knew that I could do that and knowing is half the battle. Neutral Pricey burger, especially if you get buffalo meat. They also offer organic beef which compared to my buffalo burger meat, seems a bit more dense. If I was gonna pay the extra buck anyway, I shoulda got the organic. Even so, burgers were okay. Bread seemed a bit dry, and the meat flavor was alright. This place was relatively upscale-y for a burger joint, and that's weird. You get something 10 times better for half the price at Rosamundes, but only once a week though. Parking sucked out there as well, so be careful, although when I went I got pretty lucky. Review #17521 Bullshead

Positive I'm gonna go positive for this not on taste but because they could fill your ultra bulky order. Sure it seems like the workers hate you, but they get it done. Had to get a ton of food relatively quick for a bunch of people on a Saturday morning, and time was of the essence, so we hit these guys up. Saved time, saved money, and everyone was full. If you want to eat tasty Dim Sum, go elsewhere, but if you it want fast and relatively cheap (I remember when they used to have 3 pieces of your basics for a buck) go here. Positive Fast and relatively cheap. I had the chicken tikka masala, garlic naan, and the potatoes with spinach. I definitely liked the endless chai. Tasted pretty good, got full on a few bucks, still prefer Chutneys or Viks if I'm out in Berkeley, or Kennedy's if you want beer and pool with your food, but now I can finally say that I've been here. All my friends would swear by this place in college, but at this point, I've been to plenty of other Indian places. This was good though, especially for Richmond/Sunset area. Positive Yeah... the food here is hella good. Oh, but you have to bring your own beer. Everything I had there was good-saag paneer, the nans, I forgot what chicken dishes we ordered, but the were all good. I doubt that I'll ever have something there that I don't like. They can also accommodate large parties (10+), and that's always good to know, and we didn't even have to wait that long. Cheap prices and good food, always an excellent combo Review #17414 Chutney

Positive Yes, a lot of shops in the TL are good, but the xiu mai sandwich here is extra delicious and the prices are cheap. I went there yesterday (Saturday 11/25/06) at around 11:30 am, and the line wasn't so bad. Although, I do remember weekday lines around that time can be kinda bad. But the price and the taste make it worthwhile. Heck, order two and take one home, make it more worth your time, since you had to wait in line for it. Oh, and don't think you can run in and not feed the parking meter, I saw two ladies get ticketed while they ordered. There are all kind's of DPT around in that area, so pay the quarter (which'll get you 6 minutes, and that's enough assuming you're not there on a weekday lunch rush), and save yourself a ticket. Positive Pizza pizza pizza!!! Scones scones scones!!! Bread bread bread!!! Part of the Cheeseboard Collective and that's awesome. The pecan rolls are really nice, as is everything else. I've never had anything that I didn't like there. My only little insignificant complaint is that when you get a slice of pizza here, they don't hit you off with that little extra wedge like they do in Berkeley, but it's all good. Parking blows, as it always will on 9th, but the N Judah goes by there, as does the 44 I believe. Plus there is a bike rack in front. Review #17401 Arizmendi Bakery

Positive Used to like this place better than Gordos, but I think that over the years, the girth of the burritos here have been been toned down a bit. I guess that bums me out a little. It feels like they give less meat than before. Otherwise, the taste is fine, although I never had the carne asada here, or the grilled chicken. The chile verde can be a bit salty at times as can the carnitas, but I haven't been there in a while. I will eat there again sometime soon. All in all, it's good and such, but when something becomes less than what it used to be, it kind of leaves a bad taste in your mouth. I was this close to going "neutral" with this one. Plus, I just ate out in the Mission the other night, maybe I shouldn't have written this after doing that. Review #17400 Chino's Taqueria

Positive Last couple of times that I went, they hooked me up with some fried fish or some other little extra free dish, that's a bonus right there. As far as the food... I haven't actually eaten sushi there, but I do like the sukiyaki a lot. I've decided to try that at different Japanese restaurants lately, and so far, this one I like best (although I've only had sukiyaki at 2 other places). I also thought that the curry katsu donburi was good. Pretty huge portions, and the prices seemed pretty okay. I'll definitely go back, but I do want to try sukiyakis elsewhere. Positive I used to hate on Gordos, and if I'd written this a year ago, It would've been negative, but nowadays I feel that they aren't that bad. For me, the best thing there is the boiled chicken or the spicy chicken. My advice is to avoid the grilled chicken. I always made it a point to not get the grilled chicken, but last week, I was in there thinking to myself, "well it's been years since I had the grilled chicken, maybe it's not so bad..." So I ordered it, ate it, then regretted it. Really dry, and the flavor isn't too good. As far as carnitas, chile verde, and carne asada is concerned, I'll make sure I get that from the Mission district, but if I need to eat a non-grilled chicken burrito, Gordos gets the green light from me. Also consider that there are no good burrito joints in the Richmond district. Oh, and the quesadillas are fun! Positive My friends have been telling me about this place for years, and it seems that everytime they go, I'm not available. Finally I got the cahnce to eat there, and it was lived up to the years of hype. Particularly the mango chicken. This is the reason my friends go, and when I go back someday, I'll be ordering that and the balada (sp??- which is like a roti bread). I also had some prawns with walnuts, which I liked, but I'll probably want to try something new next time. We were seriously eyeballing other people's desserts, but we were too full to order some of our own. They looked good, and I'm going to try to save some room next time. *UPDATE went on 11/29/06... had the lamb curry, which came with your choice of a bread, coconut rice-which was was very fragrant and tasty, or a safron rice-which I'll probably try next time. Also had the papaya salad, tasty as well, reminds me of the kind of salads oyu can get at Thai restaurants-fish sauce, lime juice, roasted nuts, etc. A+ Review #17349 Mandalay Restaurant

Neutral Howdy folks, have only been here once and I had the fried chicken. The breast meat was a bit dry, but the thigh meat was good. A bit pricey, and since that was the case, I would hope for the breast to not be dry. I saw some other people eating the mac and cheese, and it looked like they had tater tots on it. Positive Filling and greasy, filling and greasy. Hush puppies were fried and good. The the butter it came with was sweet, and the hash was filling. This is one place where I usually can't finish everything. I've stolen bites of pancakes from friends there, and they were always tasty, one was cornmeal based, had a little graininess to it, which I liked. Positive This place is about 8 blocks from Santa in downtown San Mateo. This place is about 90-95% of what Santa is, but 200% better than anything in The City, so far as I know. With that said, the only complaint is that the noodles are inconsistent. When I've been there, between my order, my sons, and whomever else was with us, the noodles tend to range from thin to normal sized it seems. However the broths are tasty and the stewed pork is nice and tender and tasty, although it bit more sweet than Santa (for better or for worse). The good thing is that if I'm too late for Santa, or don't feel like lining up, Himawari is just around the way, and there has always been plenty of space-this is not a sign of the quality of the ramen neither, it's just that this place has about twice as much space as Santa. However, parking is not as good as near Santa. Now... if Santa Ramen didn't exist, this place would be my favorite, and I would make the trip out there for this place as well. Review #17329 Himawari

Positive How can you not like 7 courses of beef?!? Actually, last time I went, we had 8 since we ordered the raw beef. Get that... it is soaked in lime juice, cut thin, and is good. The beef sausages and meatloaf are particularly good, as they are are sweet and savory. The jook at the end is nice too. My friend usually saves the meatloaf thing that is served with the sausages to throw into the jook, and I would have to agree with him, those two go great together. Positive This one is larger than the one 4 blocks away, but equally deliscious. Writing this one to comment on the speed of their service. I recently ordered some duck fried rice to go so I could take it over to The Bitter End. I used the restroom there, and by the time I was out, it was ready. The staff was friendly as usual. Positive This is the end all!!! This ramen is all aces in my book. I drive 20 miles to get this. Everything I've had there is delicious. The miso broth is great, the shoyu broth is even better, and the tonkotsu (pork bone, most SF places don'e even have this...)broth is insane. The roasted pork is good, but the stewed pork is supreme. Curry, buttercorn, kimchee, nori, etc. all the varieties, with any of the broths is a winner. I say pay the extra dollar, get the extra noodles. Also, for lunch special, the kara-age bowl is dee-lish. Warning: there is a horrible line for this tiny place, which can hold about 24. I usually go about 15-20 minutes before opening (11:30-2 and 5:30-9 closed on Tuesdays) because I'd rather wait 15-20 minutes, instead of the 45-60 minutes you'll have to wait if you miss that first wave of people that get in. They will also close early if they run out of broth or noodles, which I've seen happen as early as 7:30 pm... lots of parking.. highly recommended!!! Review #17109 Santa Ramen

Positive I'd have to say it's probably my favorite sushi in The City. Fish can't get any fresher than at a fish market I imagine, plus the prices are way cheap. Not much atmosphere unless your into fish markets, but it's all about the sushi anyways. Let the fish mongers do their thing while you feast on tons of cheap, fresh, delicious sushi. Positive pretty standard Japanese food, especially for this neighborhood, not great, but not bad. The one thing that puts this over the top is the garlic albacore. If you like garlic, tuna, and sushi, then get this. Otherwise, I figure any Japanese retaurant in the Richmond district will suffice, although some places make decent (Japanese) curry and sukiyaki. I don't think Kitaro does curry... Anyhoo, garlic albacore... Oh and parking stinks, bike or walk, especially if you live in the Richmond. Review #17022 Kitaro Restaurant

Positive The satay is awesome if you like spicy soup noodles. Also, don't bother getting a small bowl, just pay the extra $0.75 or so and thank yourself for it later. A long time ago, I was on the bus going past this place and I was like, "oh man... they spelled bar-b-que wrong, they put p.p.q instead of b.b.q (since the p.p.q is written on a cow on the window)." However, my friend started to laugh when she pointed out to me that p.p.q was the acronym for the restaurant-Pho Phu Quoc. So the jokes on me, but man do they make some kickass satay (I believe it's #5) Review #17021 PPQ Vietnamese Cuisine

Positive Ramen Halu was definitely delicious, but since I live in SF, I have to admit that I'm not willing to drive out there just for this ramen, since my favorite 2 ramen joints are only about 20 minutes from The City. However, if I'm in San Jose (as was the case for when I first went here) I'll definitely make it a point to get out to this place. The broth was tasty and the noodles were tasty and plentiful. There are fish and other sea creatures along the ceiling and walls, and it's really cute. I'll post pics of the walls and the noodles if were allowed to do that (i'm a noob still). Positive My advice is go there on Tuesday sometime between 11am-2pm... they sell Niman Ranch beef cheeseburgers for $5.50, and they are way delicious and huge. Plus, they will make is pretty rare if that's what you ask for. They will sell out by 2-2:30ish and there will be a line, but the best part is that you can hang out at Toronado next door and have some beers while you wait for your burger. Positive Dumpling dumplings dumplings! Get those here, and also the fried chicken wings. That's all I ever get there, but that's all I really needed. The dumplings were tasty and juicy, just like you imagine they should be. I always want to get different stuff there, but I can't help going for what I like. Someday I will, and I'll tell you all about it... Parking and wait time blows, but weekday afternoons work out pretty well (if you have a job that lets you off early) Review #17018 San Tung

Positive If you like dumplings and soup noodles, I would definitely suggest going here. The steamed and the boiled dumplings are filling and quite delicious, as are the noodles with the pork and the choy. The onion pancakes are nice and crispy and all greasy-fried like. And the donuts are great for when you or your loved ones make some jook. I have to admit, I like the dumplings better at San Tung and Koi palace, and Shanghai Dumpling King lately, but you still can't go wrong with Taiwan Restaurant. Review #17017 Taiwan Restaurant
