Neutral Cuisine: Mexican Downtown
Went way back in the first few weeks they were open in the Nordstrom center basement. Really liked their burritos, chips and salsa. Became a regular. Our office moved farther downtown and I was away from the area as a lunch spot for over a year, stopped back in a few times over the last few years and it seems like nothing more than run of the mill fast food. Not sure if they changed or I did, but I doubt I will go back. Tried one in El Cerrito and it was forgettable as well. Did not have the fish dishes, usually veggie or chicken, so maybe fish is their forte...Try it and see for yourself. Burritos pale in comparison to the much less expensive and more delicious ones a block away at Taqueria Cancun on Mission at 6th. The decor was fine for a fast food joint, was reasonably clean and inviting. Review #15370

For what it is I think it is good. If I am ever at Union Square and I need lunch I can count on Rubio's to deliver some good, cheap, relatively healthy meal. I really like their chicken salad and their non-fried tacos. I think it is one of the best options if you are dining in the mall. Review #11562

Their fish tacos are baja style, battered and fried fish over a bed of shredded cabbage in corn tortilla served with lime wedges and spice mayonese sauce. Yes, it's greasy, but for those who've spend a good amount of time in So Cal, its authentic nostalgia! Mmmm Mmmm Good! Review #9537

I work downtown, and one day I was craving fish tacos. Someone told me to check out this taqueria that's on the corner of Jessie & Mint (I can't remember the name!) It seemed like an authentic mexican restaurant, but the fish taco plate was $8.00 (I just wanted two tacos...no "plate")! I remembered Rubio's from college in San Diego and when to grab two tacos ($4.00) & chips in the basement at the mall. The food is fine & fresh & affordable. Review #7757

Not only is it a chain and there's absolutely no reason to go to a chain restaurant when you live in arguably the culinary capitol (per capita at least) of this country (I went with a group of So. California's who were very excited about it for what reason I do not know) but the food sucks. I had two s**tty fish tacos and had to pay for a side of chips. I lament my Rubios dining experience as a meal and I can never get back. Review #7751

Better than average fast food. I don't understand the signs that say "our beans are never refried". If you know mexican cooking, you know that there is no negative conotation to refried beans. Anyway, this place will do in a pinch. Review #5939

Rubio's, Baja Grill - Remember this is a chain, and it is fast food, but I still like it. It's really not bad. The Quesadilla and even the salads. Of course there is the Fish Taco, with that who knows what, sauce. Their signature dish. Service is quick and there is plenty seating. This ain't no Taco Bell, that's for sure. Review #3064
