Has Denny's food, all the way. 50's theme is cute. Major plus is that it's right by the AMC and open till all hours. love the milkshakes. Review #20231

I used to go here primarily for convenience as it is right near the movies and my teenage daughter liked getting breakfast at any time of day but my last visit there was, hopefully, just that, my last visit. My spinach salad was a pile of spinach, with a pile of blue cheese with a pile of bacon all sort of dumped on a plate. Granted I asked for the dressing on the side, but trying to dress this salad with the gloppy dressing on a flat plate was a disaster. Half way through it was just too boring to eat. Next time we'll just have to venture into the Tenderloin a bit for something more interesting and palatable. Review #19971

I was here for a dinner before a ballet and it was fine. nothing stellar, but it seemed clean enough, fast enough. the waitstaff wasn't hanging all over us, but they didn't abandon us either. they seemed pleasant. basic diner stuff. i got an avacado burger. same price as just about anywhere; about $8. This mel's is a bit lacking, in service and cleanliness, however the Ruben is pretty good, as was their pie, if you're given the choice, go to the one over near the GG bridge, as is clad mostly in chrome, and they seem to wipe it down a bit more frequently Review #17503

I think the hype is greater than the meal. Been here a few times and haven't found anything to get excited about. Chili tastes like it's fresh from the can. Service is slow and often impersonal, even when there's nobody else in the place... Review #17084

If you want good food, then avoid Mel's. Even diner staples such as burgers, fires, and shakes are marginal. There are better late night night joints to get good food such as Grubstake. But if you're in a nostalgic mood and want to do the whole 50's doo-wop thing, then Mel's isn't so bad. I favor the Geary location, then Lombard, and I avoid the Van Ness one. Review #14405

It's great this place is open late, but the service is just horrible. I think the food is ok...sometimes edible. This should be a last resort. Review #11658

This place is seriously disgusting, my husband, sister-in-law and I were craving sweets so we thought we'd get a sundae, what better place than an all american diner? WRONG!!! The service was bad, the waitress was mean and practically throwing our plates down on the table. The place was virtually empty but our waitress kept disappearing for 10 minutes at a time. And when the sundaes came....oh my god....there were BUGS....BUGS IN THEM! Seriously! They were crawling all over the top of the sundae, they were huge nat like bugs! Thank god i noticed before they dug into the sundae. Then the waitress says "let me replace it!" I said no way, i'm not hungry anymore, so did my husband. But my crazy (in a nice way) sister-in-law wanted her sundae so they tried making it three times but still there were bugs, until i suggested that they were actually in the food itself....say....The nuts?? sure enough they had taken over the nuts in a huge swarm. Plus they didn't discount the sundae..YUCK! Review #11453

Appalling service. My husband and I asked to split a butterscotch milkshake; what we got was a pretty lousy milkshake, and when the bill came it was mis-priced. After a lot of hassle and some really resentful looks from the waitress they gave us the price back in change and said they couldn't change it on the computer. Plus we put 50 cents in the lit jukebox only to be informed with a smirk by a passing waiter (who turned out to be the manager) that the jukeboxes don't work. There was no apology and no offer of refund. We had to complain. Don't waste your time, money or appetite! Review #7503

If you choose to pay with a credit card, waiters record the information from your ID, which is illegal in California. (CCC 1747.8) Review #7021

I spent my infancy through my teens in the kitchen of a '50s era diner. I loved it. What I loved most was the pride my grandparents took in running and maintaining it. Part of that pride shone on every gleaming surface that was wiped spotlessly clean several times a day, whether it was needed or not with a well wrung towel that had been soaking in hot bleachy water. So, imagine my horror upon sitting down in Mel's to find all 27 of the devices crammed onto my table covered with grease, goo, smudges and yuck. I spent the next ten minutes fervently using napkins and water in a futile attempt to recapture a lost era. Alas, it was for naught. Those days live on in memory only. The wait person was offended that I didn't want to wait as long as she felt I should. The food was nothing I couldn't make at home, except at home, it would be warm when I dug in. Review #6976

Open whenever you need it, a decent spot to get a sobering burger and fries or breakfast after a night of partying. A step below an independent diner, but the Mels are bright, clean and quick...destination spot, NEVER...welcome after drinking, ALWAYS. Review #6121

24 hour on weekends, so it's a great spot to know about, but food can be hit or miss. Classic 50s diner style decor and food. Can be a little greasy, and there are definitely better diners out there, but the menu is huge and will satisfy most if you are in the mood for this sort of thing. Don't expect miracles. Review #5217

The food is average and the service is terrible! I live a block from Mel's, so I go there often for convenience. I can honestly say the service is consistently bad. They are great at getting the food from the kitchen to the table and that's it. After that you might have to get up our of your seat to fetch the waitress and bribe her for a bottle of ketchup. Since they don't drop the check, I usually just get up and go to the cashier and watch the fun begin! Review #1347
