“ This is a small place in the tenderloin but the interior has been pleasantly redone creating a clean, spartan atmosphere. Contrary to negative comments by others here, I have always found the numbers of staff more than adequate but the problem for others may have been that these folks don't seem to have been in the restaurant business too long. They seem like a very nice, charming Turkish extended family (or group of friends) who have gotten into the restaurant business--so they are sometimes less than maximally efficient but always pleasant. Still, I like their food a lot. Today for lunch, I had Imam Bayildi (their spelling) which was accompanied by couscous, pilaf and a Turkish-style salad of cucumbers and tomatoes and it was excellent. My companion had marinated lamb and it was very tasty as well. We shared an apetizer whose name began with a "K" but I cannot otherwise remember--it seemed to be mostly fresh crushed red chiles and, as the waitress warned us, was blistering. ”

“ I like greek food, and Gyro Kebab serves up some decent renditions. They have a large selection of kebabs, and I go with the combo to have a mix of items. The greek salad, pita, rice, and their combination appetizer plate are perfect for sharing. They are open up late and inexpensive. Give it a try...they're also right next to Turtle Tower if you're in the mood for some AMAZING pho. TL neighborhood provides instant street entertainment.

“ I go to this place quite a bit and the food is really quite good for the price. There are a few things that irk me though, one of which is that they serve generic pita bread out of a bag like you get at the grocery store, their competitor down by the SFPL has awesome bread. I mention this because the head chef here used to work there and you would think that he realized people loved the homemade bread. The other thing that I could do without is that one of the chefs (not the head chef) smokes right by the door, and the last time I went there he went straight into the kitchen and did not wash his hands before handling food. Sometimes they seem a bit grumpy there too. But at the end of the day I will still get my wraps there for $6 because they are tasty and fresh, and if I see the smoker going for my wrap after his break I will say something for sure. ”

“ Just tried this place after reading a review in the chronicle last week. We started with the combo plate (hummus-good-; baba ghanouj-good-; tabouli-OK- haydari(pureed feta, yougurt, garlic, dried mint, olive oil)yumyum!; Piyaz (marinated white beans)-OK-beans a bit undercooked;Dolma -good-; eggplant salad-yummy. The pita bread that came with this platter was very good, warm, slightly chewy--that nice toothsome texture. At $7.95 it was a great deal---plenty to share!
Also ordered the Combo meat kebab. THe lamb was lame, dry and just not pleasant. the kofte on the other hand AMAZING! Great flavours and cooked to tender...might order a whole meal of that next time. The chicken had some good flavour but was overcooked. We also odered the Combo gyro wrap, but as you can imagine we were stuffed and had them wrap the wrap togo (i'll let you know how it is when I eat it tommorow :0)...as well as the baklava.
The service was great, very nice people.Atmosphere was very basic. Have about 6 tab ”

“ The food was decent, alexander kebab was pretty good. Service was terrible. The manager was the only waiter. He told us they were out of the baklava and rice pudding, then sits down and eats the last rice pudding right in front of us. ”

“ Came here for dinner and was surprised by just how great the food was. The place was clean and the people were friendly. The tabuli was good and their meat was fresh and cooked just right. They had a Turkish tv station playing as well, that was fun to watch. Great place to go when out at night because they are open late. My buddy and I will be back again soon! ”

“ Had lunch here. Atmosphere was fun as was the service(very friendly and enjoyable).
Thier hummus was to die for. The best I've had. Then we had the chicken gyros which were tender and tasteful. The prices were also very reasonable for the amount of food they give. Everything was great start to finish. Will go back again for sure. ”

“ We were looking for something different and came across some of the best food! Gyro Kebab has fast and very friendly service. The swordfish was excellent and the Alexander kebabs were so flavorful. Even my two daughters 13 and 9 loved this place and cant wait to go back. For desert we had rice pudding. My two girls were fighting over who would get the last bite,it was so good. We cant wait to eat there again! ”

“ Best Turkish and greek food,
It is one of the cleanest restaurant in tenderloin. Friendly server and delicious beef&lamb gyro and rice pudding. That was the best rice pudding I ever had. I will be there for more gyros and rice puddings. ”

“ I had the lamb shish kebab wrap and barely noticed the lamb in it, although what there was of it was tasty. I did notice that I got charged the a la carte price instead of the lunch special price of $5.50 for a wrap, fries (salad was substituted as they were out of fries) and soda as advertised on the sign outside which I didn't see until I left. Still, I'll probably go back for a lunch special and that delicious rice pudding. ”

“ 2 of us had the Lamb Gyro on lavash bread inhaled it all in. The Helal food there is fresh and tasty. The tabouli salad had a wonderful aroma of lemons and the parsley was not overpowering. The chicken plate was also very well done...'like it outta be' says my co-diner. Tab came to $28 for 3 people at lunch. The rice pudding is light with hints of (I think) rosewater, not a thick custard type. ”
