“
Seeing parking in front and almost lunchtime why not try it especially since we had seen reviews, some from freebies other not. This tiny old storefront shared to me it's poor feng shui. It seemed awfully cold and uninviting inside. Our server was pleasant but detached as the specials where announced in a robotic timbre. I opted for the salmon and my friend tried the turkey burger. Both arrived quickly as the lunch crowd started stirring up the volume level. We both were disappointed and for the same reason. OVERCOOKED. I enjoy salmon because of it's moist buttery flakes and fat level when done correctly, this one was dry, dry, dry. My friends burger was also dry, from both overcooking and any lack of residual fat in the meat. At least he was able to down his with the help of some additional aioli which was fetched quickly after the waiter notice our displeasure. For the price and popularity of the place I expected better. ”

“ 12/07 Sat. Were we hit by twilight zone or holiday blues that night at Triptych? We stepped into a tin shed as cold as the winter night outside. The place felt desolate even with customers at a party table and 2 other couples. The waiter led us to the bench seats with baseboard heating. The marble top table added to the chilling ambience. The surrounding huge paintings were attractive in their own rights, except for being hung on unappealing tin walls. The long wait for our food was excruciating. But hail to the chef! My petrole sole was seared to crispy, served on a warm bed of mashed potatoes ($19). Very fresh & tasty meat. Her baked walu was served with coconut couscous & citrus sauce ($19), albeit cooled down in the kitchen. Firm meat with good flavor. The cappuccino cake was quite pleasing too. The food was enjoyable (positive), the dining room was unpleasant (negative). Any good interior designer to make over the place, please? May be the one who decorated the 70'ish restroom? ”

This is in the neighborhood, so we've gone a few times. It's pretty tasty, and there is generally one dish out of four that we'll really love, but mostly the food doesn't compel us to return often. The bathroom is really cool though. You'll just have to go check it out. It was just completely unexpected. And cool. There's nice art in the restaurant and in the hall on the way back to the bathroom, too. It's a small space with a nice intimate feel, and the wait staff have always been very nice.

“ A surprisingly pleasant experience. Plenty of restaurants can make something that sounds good, looks good but tastes FLAT. Everything we had here had really exceptionally nice flavors. The tofu salad had a great melange of complementary flavors, the ravioli had a delicious mushroomy flavor (a bit too much oil, though) and my quinoa and tofu (which can easily go hippie-bland) was flavorful and even spicy. The desserts--capuccino cake and molten chocolate cake, were divine. delicious but not overpowering or cloying. Negatives? The lamb my dining companion had was chewy (although he admits to have high standards with lamb) and the espresso was not good (watery, no crema, and not hot). Excellent service. Mellow SoMa mood. Interesting wall art. Overall a positive experience- recommended. ”

“ The space is post modern bohemian chic. Which is a good thing, in case that isn't clear. warm, cozy and expansive. The staff is very friendly and genuine.
The menu is limited but inviting. The curry carrot soup was thin in body and big on taste. Loved it. The salads were fresh fennel balanced with bacon wrapped dates. Nice touch. The entrees were less impressive. The grilled scallops were plump and meaty, but their bed of risotto was overcooked (a big risotto fan here). The paella was good. The seafood was all clean and fresh, but it seemed to lack spice or spirit...but that is merely my taste.
The most inconvenient event was the 80 minutes gone by without more than bread and wine at our table. They finally announce that our order never made it to the kitchen. We all laughed...a lot. The appropriate response after finishing a bottle of wine on an empty stomach.
The weird thing was the bill debacle. It arrived $100 to much. We politely inquire. laugh some more. Tried again. ”

“ For every dozen unimaginative neighborhood places, there's a place like Triptych. It's not a big room, but it's clean, modern, and a bit warehousey, but not detrimentally so. The focaccia and feta dip was really nice, as was the cocnut/curry soup. The ceviche was also excellent. The wine selections were excellent, not unnecessarily extensive, and paired well with the food. It was nice to see organic wine selections as well. The butterfish was excellent and perfectly prepared, as was the leg of lamb. For dessert, the pear tart and espresso thingy were both outstanding. The service was excellent as well. I know some of NYCs better known chefs were able to build solid reputations by opening places in neighborhoods that may be about to turn the corner, thus making it more affordable, and enabling a more uncompromised pursuit of the vision. It's a high risk formula, and for Triptych, it's likely to pay off. The meal was a SFSurvey comp, but I would have gladly paid full price. Recommended! ”

“ I am MORE disappointed with my dining experience at Triptych after having read all the positive reviews than I would have been with zero expectations. The good: hip atmosphere, good music (though it was a little too loud). The bad: awful service. I don't think our waiter had ever waited on tables before...or he was on drugs. Either way, it shouldn't take 15 minutes to get menus or an hour to get your food. The wine selection was crap, like $5.99 wine for $45. Half the food was good but not anything worth ordering again. The other half was undercooked and bland. This was not the quirky, ecelectic food experience I was looking forward to. ”

“ It's an modern art gallery, it's a world music dub house, it's a wine bar, it's a restaurant, IT'S Triptych!
Great food, NO pretension service, nice wine selection, sexy Euro beat music. I love it!
Best poofy texture, crunchy crusted rosemary foccacia in SF. Salads with dates wrapped in pancetta and deep fried baby artichokes - Brilliant! I could happily eat an entire movie theater size popcorn box of those fried artichokes.
Paella - Good. Not the best in the city but pretty fabulous when you look at the pile of seafood, chicken and chorizo in that mass of perfectly cooked rice. Costs a whole $24 for two people.
Cappuccino torte was smooth. Chocolate molten cake started with good ingredients but was overcooked and a little gummy as though it was warmed in a microwave. Breads & cakes do not go into a microwave!
Crumby neighborhood location, but parking is easy.
Go! Eat! Enjoy! ”

“ Take a look at the photo of Triptych. That's about how large it is (photo isn't cutting off much). Now look closely at the walls. That's right, it's an aluminum shed. I only mention this because I dined here during the Artic freeze of 2007, and was a bit cold throughout my meal. Even the artichoke salad starter suffered a chill. I bit a slice of fried artichoke to be hit with an unexpected little burst of cold oil. Seeing as some reviewers disliked the pork in particular, I ordered a special: linguine and shrimp in a lobster creme sauce. The server warned me, when I asked for the "pasta and lobster special," that it was actually "with shrimp, in a lobster creme sauce" ($19) -- I'm still annoyed that there wasn't an inkling of lobster in the sauce at all. Maybe just the taste of boiled shells. My partner enjoyed a beautifully cooked piece of lamb. After 1 starter, 2 entrees, 2 house drinks, 1 dessert and tip, we paid $100, which is more than the place is worth, I think. Lacks polish. ”

“ I loved this place, the food was really great, service was quick and friendly. This is a really cozy place, I know I have been here before, but I just can't remember what restaurant it was before. It is reasonably priced the portions are medium sized but filling. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone.

I got to try Triptych thanks to sfsurvey, like many others. It was easy to find, and we got a space right outside. We started with the sashimi which was pretty good. I had the paella which came with a lot of seafood, and my friend had some fish which was also pretty good. We also had the hazelnut pyramid for dessert, which i thought was very very good, and the ice cream sandwich, which is something we wouldn't normally get at a restaurant, but it was still good. overall, we had a good experience and might go there again. ”

“ While it wasn't the best place, it wasn't the worse either. The atmosphere is casual and the service is upfront and friendly. Our waiter guided us to the best items and we appreciated that. I inquired about the quality of the meats (are they free range? organic?) to which our waiter replied that with prices as low as theirs, they can't afford higher quality meats. I didn't find the prices particularly low and other restaurants can be just as competitive and offer free range, organic meats and produce ("Home" comes to mind). I was also surprised with the winelist. Very average wines with high mark-ups. There's a bottle that retails for less than $10 that is $32. And their corkage is $15, which seems unreasonable for a place that has a very basic and average wine list. I had the ravioli starter, which I enjoyed. And the special entree of the night: Scallops with risotto. The risotto with the scallops was nice, but on its own, didn't stand up as well. Overall, a nice time. ”

“ delightful restaurant south of market. Part industrial, part eclectic, part exotic. The disco bathroom is worth the visit itself. Waitstaff were friendly and attentive, and the food was top notch. The salads weren't your usual leafy green with variety of sprinkles, but had been thought out and had flavor. Entre's were packed with flavor, and definitely different. - All told, it came to about $60/person including wine, starters, and a desert to share. - A classy date destination that has an easy going casual atmosphere.

Thanks to SFSurvey, I got to try out Triptych.. The restaurant was easy to find and parking was not a problem. The place is a little small, felt a little claustrophobic. maybe it's because there was a dinner party in there too? Anyways, we started with the ravioli which was really good, loved the fried artichoke that came on top. Then the waiter brought us bread with a feta cheese dip thing.. not sure exactly what it was but it was really good. For entree, I had the steak and my friend had th salmon. The steak was good but the salmon was a little too dry. dessert was yummy. We had the molten chocolate cake and an espresso mousse cake. Service was a little slow for us and another table. We had to go up to ask for a check after waiting 15 minutes after letting them know we're ready for the check, the same for the other people that was dining there. Other then that, the service was really friendly. ”

“ Wow what a nice surprise to find this restaurant. Again, a big thanks to sfsurvey for the tip & dinner - my wife & I will be back. Starters: fried artichoke salad and ahi poki sashimi. The fried artichoke pieces was superb- I wanted to order another plate just with that! Light and crispy w/ sweet artichoke flavor. The sashimi was nicely done with just enought acidity to make the flavors blend. Entrees: new york steak and seared salmon. My wife loved the salmon; normally grilled at other places, here it's seared on one side forming a perfectly caramelized &crunchy crust but also flaky and flavorful on the inside. The steak was excellent; tender and juicy with a slight pesto sauce on top. I'm normally a ribeye person but I found this new york cut to be very nicely done. The service was friendly & attentive. The atmosphere was unique with local paintings hanging in the dining area. Lastly I dug the old school funky toilet with LPs on the wall & a jukebox playing Sat. Night Fever tunes. ”

“
The name says it all, TRIP lends better than TRYP in my opinion! This Bohemian feel restaurant is reminiscent of a dining experience one would find in downtown Portland's artsy area or in the Haight' in SF. A fusion on californian, spanish, italian and Hippie all under one roof! Cramped quarters uniquely designed to be able to seat number of people well. They have added a counter where people can also eat...great idea. The artsy atmosphere along with an in house DJ does nicely to create an ambiance that is very unique. Art is displayed throughout the restaurant..famous or infamous it lends well with the decor! We started with their focaccia bread which my cousin who is a chef described it as fluffy, moist & steamed with a glaze. The Fennel Salad was awesome as well as the Seasonal Ravioli. The Paella was alright, and as you consumed more your palate adjusted, I understand that the Leg of Lamb Rotisserie is superb! A nice wine to compliment, and a nice BIG cup of Joe' to finish! ”

“ Imagine a remote refuge where you can contemplate, write poetry, zone out, even dine. Leave cares behind and step into the trancelike Zen of Triptych, an otherworldly dimension beyond time and space, a hauntingly mystical place whose ambience and music drift to ethereal moods, a hushed theatrical performance bringing forth mystical Berkeley or the Haight, hypnotic dimensions escaping the urban hectic experience. Fortunately, the food doesn't disappoint. delicious rosemary foccacia, warm, crisp with blue cheese dipping sauce. Enticing lightly fried artichoke hearts with arugula, scintillatingly delicious, delicately sauteed mushroom ravioli, a juicy saffron paella filled with mussels, clams, chicken and calamari in a delicate delectable tomato reduction, superb meats, pork and lamb, beautifully finished in caramelized reduction sauces, delicious light raspberry mousse cake in a white chocolate pyramid. Leave your cares behind and escape to Triptych's mystery zone. ”

“ Came here after winning a voucher for this restaurant. The place is a mix of trendy industrial and the wait staff young and eager to please. We had the s**take Ravioli and the Fried Artichoke Heart salad as starters. The Ravioli were excellent, and had complex flavors, and the salad was a perfect combination of Artichoke hearts, goats cheese, and Arugula. The Salmon with Bok Choy was moist but nothing really special. Paella was overpowered by tomatoes and a couple of the mussels were bad. The chef recommended his new apple creation for dessert and it did not disappoint. The starters outshine the entrees here, but I think it deserves another try. Will probably try brunch here next time. The psychedelic bathroom took me back to Hendrix, Choplin with a little Black Sabbath mixed in. Thanks Angela and Wayne!

“ I have been to Tryptych before: once for a fundraising silent auction when they served a home-cooked chicken mole; and once just to hang out during the Folsom Street Fair. This time I went because we won a generous certificate, and the food was delicious. We started off with a salmon sashimi, which was flavored with lime & sesame and shaped like a star! Then we ordered the rack of lamb. It was so tender that we had to ask the waiter if we'd been given the steak by accident. We also ordered the paella for two, which was huge and came with plenty of shellfish. I realized that this was the first time I had ever eaten paella, so I really don't have any right to judge, but my companion, who had eaten paella before, said that it was good. Too tomato-y for me. I like the high ceilings and the open space feeling. I just wish the restaurant were on a different block. ”

“ The inside looked a bit grungy, and from the look of the decor, it would fit right in the Haight. But don't let that fool ya. I was pleasantly surprised by the food. The menu changes periodically. On my last visit, I started out with some scallops as the appetizer. They were cooked just right, not too raw and definitely, not too tough. The dish was prepared with a hint of herbs, as the chef probably didn't want to overshadow the natural flavors of the scallops. Next, I had the grilled skirt steak, which I felt was just "all right," but that was because my expectation had been raised by the delicious appetizer. I ended my dinner with a chocolate molten cake and a scoop of ice cream on the side. Overall, it was a nice, free meal that I won from SFSurvey. Thank you, Wayne and Angie! I might go back some day, but the price may be a bit prohibitive. The entrees averages around $18.

They had every reason to absolutely hate us, but instead they treated us so graciously and kindly and were incredibly good natured and fun. “ Love Triptch! My friends took me here for Brunch to celebrate my birthday a few months ago. Had a great time here. Waiter was friendly and attentive. I had the organic Granola Pancakes: caramelized apples, toasted walnuts & organic maple syrup--YUM! Their portions are generous. You've gotta check out their restroom which is a time warp into the 70's what a hoot. I would definitely come back again for brunch and next time dinner! Great that they're veggie friendly too! =)

“ I may not have ever made it here but for the SF Survey winnings. Thanks. We both liked our meal. The sashimi starter was fantastic and really would have been better named something like Seared Tuna with a peppercorn crust-but either way was the best of the night and great choice. The salmon was cooked just right with a slightly crispy outside. My boyfriend's pork was a little overcooked/chewy and was not finished. The dessert was not special either but may have been weak choice as it does not appear on regular menu. Although friendly, the service was very slow on a busy night. It seemed that they only had two workers. Last, the DJ had great music but it was turned way too loud for a restaurant. I like loud places but this was over the top. We were constantly repeating ourselves over the music. So, maybe pick a week night when it is quieter/less busy and try the fish.

“ I won a prize voucher from SFsurvey at Triptych! My date and I tried various dishes from this restaurant, including the fried artichock salad, leg of lamb dish and the gourmet burger. I was pleasantly surprised how tender the lamb was and the artichock salad was delicious. This was the first time I've tried fried artichokes, but it complemented the spinach and goat cheese very well. We especially liked the atmosphere and the friendly wait staff. They gave us directions to a couple of neighborhood lounges and tips on the places to hear good music in the area. I very much enjoyed the company and food at this unique restaurant in the Soma. Thanks!

“ Thanks to Triptych and SFSurvey for a great night out. Our waiter was fabulous and made the night special. I had the appetizer special--seared tuna with a mango/cucumber salad and the main course cod marinated in a shoyu/sake kind of blend. My husband had a somewhat different experience, ordering ribs and a hamburger with sweet potato fries. Which leads me to saying I think the menu is somewhat schizophrenic. Everything we had was very good, but it seemed like there's no unifying principle holding the menu together. I had a decidedly asian experience, while he had more of an american/italian one. Which makes it weird to order--you have to kind of say, well, if I get THIS appetizer, then I guess I'm going with asian tonight, which may limit your choices, overall. I had some ridiculously decadent white chocolate/raspberry dessert. MAN. Anyways, because the food was good, the service outstanding, and it's close by, I will be going again to try the rest of the dishes. ”

“ Great Experience. Waiter was super friendly and knowledgeable about their wine list. Since the wine list did not have as many of the usual suspects that you see around town (this is a good thing) we settled on the Andrew Lane Gamay Noir - great suggestion from the waiter. Started off with the Tuna Tartar with cucumbers, followed by the tofu salad and the fennel salad (loved the bacon wrapped dates), main course of Pan Fried Cod and the Pork Roast Loin, finishing up the night with the Chocolate Molten cake. Everything paired up nicely and I will definitely be back. David - great job and thank you for the sfsurvey voucher. ”

“ This is a fun little place with an interesting menu. I have to say I loved the bread and the amazing dipping sauce that came with it. I also enjoyed the fried artichoke salad. For the main course I had the steak and it was good but not anything super special. The price was not bad, I think it was $22. B-friend had the pork and it was a tad overcooked.
Service was very fast and friendly. They had a DJ spinning records and over all the place has a nice vibe. Wine list is pretty small and they have limited cocktails.

“ Had a lovely, quiet dinner on a Wednesday night with 2 friends thanks to sf survey. We shared 2 tasty starters: shiitake ravioli and shaved fennel salad. Next was paella (plate to share was plenty to share among the 3 of us), which was OK. Felt that rice was not savory enough---too much tomato sauce, no saffron flavor. The salmon with the coconut curry sauce, bok choy & rice was awesome. The molten chocolate cake really hit the spot after a great night of conversation. Make sure to visit the 70's inspired restroom: interesting disco-era memorabilia on display. Service was non-intrusive and attentive. Hope this place does more business during the week, but the peace was welcome as we could really eat & talk at leisure. I wouldn't make a special trip here, but this place would make a good starting point for dancing/music in SOMA.

“ What a lovely evening! Tonight we enjoyed our sfsurvey free meal at Triptych and it was terrific. From the wonderful service to the beautiful and very yummy food, a definite A+ experience. Our server was more than accommodating, even "creating" a new drink for me. My husband and I shared the fried artichoke salad which was really beautiful - the pickled onions were an excellent ingredient and the artichokes were tender and tasty. I had the pork roast with pear glaze and the pork was moist and the glaze was mmmmmm-mmmmm good. My husband had the lamb which we were both nervous about - lamb can be *so* bad. But this was delicious! Tender, juicy, wonderful grilled flavor. For dessert we shared the chocolate molten cake which was very good as well. I do wish the dessert menu had been a little more creative, but the menu had an overall nice variety for such a small selection. We will definitely be visiting again! Thank you, Triptych and SFSurvey!

“ First, the server was a real pleasure. Trixie was helpful and gave great suggestions. She let us try several wines before we settled on one.
Before we ordered, she dropped off a ceviche. The squid and fish were soft and clean-tasting; they were tenderized without a strong vinegar flavor.
To start I had the salad with panchetta wrapped figs; it's sugar, it's fat, it's delicious. My girlfriend had the beet salad, which was also good. She followed it with the s**take Mushroom Ravioli. The mushrooms had a good, woody flavor and the past was not overcooked. The fried artichoke hearts served with it were almost creamy. I had the pork. It was a bit dry, but the sauce it was served with more than made up for it. We finished with the molten chocolate cake. Not novel, but rich and satisfying. ”

“ Two friends and I went 6/9/06. Fun/good waiter who was knowledgable about the wine (not a huge list, but well-priced). The Chateau Lamarque Haut-Medoc 1998 was very good. We started with the special sashimi of the night -- a hawaiian poke served with wonton chips -- perfectly seasoned. Then the fried artichoke/goat cheese salad -- also well-balanced flavor-wise & yummy. Entrees were Pork Roast Loin w/braised chard & roasted pear caramel jus, Leg of Lamb w/romesco sauce & manchego, and Grilled Sirloin Steak w/red onion jam & pancetta sherry shallot sauce. The pork was most excellent, the lamb was very good (and huge), and the steak was just OK. The mashed potatoes and veggies were tasty, but I didn't realize we could have had sweet potato fries. We finished up w/molten cake w/two scoops of gelato. I forgot to check out the patio, but I LOVED the disco bathroom and funky art along the wall on the way to the bathroom. Very fun. Overall, it was very good but there's better for the price. ”

“ The seating in the main room is cramped and awkward. The tables need to be a scosh bigger, and the window seat needs to be lower. Our service was a little awkward, and slow to start, but improved as the night went one. The shaved fennel salad was misleading. There was some fennel, but not much. The salmon was average in flavor. I think this place is overpriced. I didn't feel my meal deserved the price tag it got. However, the sweet potato fries they serve are spot on. They are crispy on the outside and tender in the middle. I should have just gotten a side of fries, and few drinks, and enjoyed the nice back patio. ”

“ Triptych has a hip SOMA location, a great space, a very urban edgy, yet warm feel to it. Although the food was all *beautifully* presented, my friend and I were slightly disappointed with each dish because they just lacked...passion. While they *looked* great, they just lacked the interesting flavors and personality one would expect from the looks of the place--and the beautiful presentation of the food. They were out of a lot of things, which I could see after the long holiday weekend, but one egregious mistake was substituting skirt steak (or flank, whatever it was) for the sirloin listed on the menu. If they're going to substitute, they should let the patron know ahead of time. I wouldn't have ordred it had I known it was not going to be what was on the menu. The owner came to talk to us and was open to feed back, which to me showed he really cared, and he expressed that he is making some changes that'll improve the restaurant. I really hope so, because it's got SO much potential. ”

“ The main restaurant (there is a 'garden' out back which is often open on good days especially for brunch) holds about 50 - so reservations are really important. Industrial space is creatively and wonderfully decorated and the staff is friendly and helpful. Food is also creative and well-presented. Loved our appetizers (ravioli and beet salad), but the fish entree was slightly overcooked making it drier than would have been perfect. Accompaniments were delicious (rice, grilled vegs). The ravioli as a main course was fantastic. Small wine list, but appropriate to the menu. Street parking only, but abundant before 9 pm. Very easy access to and from the 101 and 80 freeways. We will definitely return to try the brunch.

“ The place is much smaller than what i imagined with a very unique decoration. We had fried octopus salad as the starter and I had the lamb and it was very good, it was full of flavors. My friend had the seabass served with rice which was also tasty. They only have 2 kinds of desserts on the menu but you can always ask them before you order because they usually have something else other than whats on the menu like the Rasberry Sorbet i had. The molten cake is not that great, i've tasted a better one somewhere else.

“ Excellent service and food. I had the artichoke salad, followed by the salmon. Both were delicious. Only complaint was that my partner ordered the steak rare and it came almost well done. Other than that, everything was great. ”

“ Creative atmosphere, creative dishes, beautifully presented and prepared. Intimate feel regardless of the contemporary industrial look. I had the smoked quail which was a tasty surprise. One thing I did share was a squid dish which didn't seem to be as successful as the other dishes we shared. This will not stop me from coming back!

“ Atmosphere:
Pretty cool, small open space with artwork from local artists. High ceilings, very industrial. Groovy disco bathroom.
Service:
Perfect 10, friendly, prompt, and water glasses were always full
Food:
The bottomless rosemary bread with feta dipping sauce was delicious and a unique spin on the average bread and butter. I ordered the grilled octopus salad which was very tasty. I've never had octopus so tender and meaty. The salmon entree was great. I'm not a huge salmon fan but I wanted to order it to get the artichoke puree and I was quite impressed. The seasonal veggies were outstanding.
dessert:
No room, the portions are huge!

“ This quaint SOMA eatery has nice atmosphere and superbly presents their creative dishes—and the service was excellent, thanks Chris!
We started with a spiced up sashimi inspired appetizer of fresh tuna that delighted the eye and excited the palette. Definitely would give Triptych high marks for presentation. Next up was the octopus salad. In my experience octopus is often chewy, so I usually avoid it, but the octopus in this salad was tender and meaty. It didn't look big on the plate but it was pretty hearty and filling. My favorite appetizer had to be the ravioli though, what can I say I'm a big pasta fan.
For an entrée I went with the pan fried cod, and while I liked this asian-californian fusion invention, I have to admit after sampling a bit of the lamb, steak and salmon in my group I'll probably choose the lamb next time.

“ Perhaps it's better for dinner. My lunch of potato leek soup and a grilled chicken salad sandwich was so so. The soup had a strange acidic taste that didn't really seem to complement the flavors. I know it was chicken salad, but the sandwich had way too much mayonnaise. It was also oddly sweet. This was probably because of the ligonberry which turned the chicken salad kind of pink and just added sweetness rather than any flavor. Service was friendly, but a bit to casual. Rather slow when you are on lunch break. The nicest touch was a chocolate chip cookie at the end. One of the staff noticed that my lunch companion and I had only kind of picked at our food and asked if everything was ok, which was nice. It wasn't bad, it just didn't wow me at all. ”

“ I adore Triptych. The dishes are creative and very fresh ingredients were obviously used. The arugula salad with dates wrapped in pancetta was perfect.
For my main entree, I had the scallops which was fantastic with the polenta and spinach sides. My friends had the lamb and the steak and they both loved their dishes. For dessert, we all shared the orgasmic warm chocolate cake with lava sauce topped with vanilla ice cream. I can't wait to go back and try their other offerings. ”

“ delightful dining experience. Friendly, helpful staff who are engaging. A wonderful environment to dine in. Spacious, airy and casual with elegance. I had a difficult time choosing from their amazing apps to the entrees. Eventually went with the lamb - ohmigawd - delicious!!!! Even recommended to the next table of patrons as they were having difficulties decided over the many wonderful treats. My friends had steak and scallops, we all shared, it was fabulous. And a great wine list to boot!!! ”

“ The sea bass with blueberry balsamic glaze was absolutely delicious! Besides having a perfect combination of sweet and sour flavors, the blueberry sauce provided a nice backdrop to the delicate texture of the fish. I was also pleased with the service and modern, arty atmosphere of the place. ”

“ On our 9 day vacation to SF last month, my husband and I dined at Triptych 3 times- 2 dinners and a Sunday brunch (celebrated our 1 year wedding anniversary). We loved the decor, especially the disco bathroom (took pictures). The food: scallops were our favorite, sea bass very good, beignets(sp?) creative and tasty, ravioli (mmmm good), Pork-ok, benedict eggs- different variations and good. Servings are plentiful, service is friendly and attentive. When we return to SF, we will definitely revisit. ”

“ My sense was that Triptych is in the nascent stages of becoming a great restaurant, still needing some work, yet definitely shows promise. Our waiter was generally attentive, yet failed to bring the requested adjustments (e.g. no prosciutto on salad) despite saying it could be done. Our appetizers were good (the Halibut and salad with goat cheese and pecans), and my scallops were cooked perfectly... perhaps they've responded to the feedback below. I give extra points to Triptych for giving the choice 2 of 4 sides alongside each entree and providing us with a carafe of water for the table. ”

“ Triptych is a cool new restaurant in the Soma. The space itself is very hip- it has a slightly industrial feel and is adorned with modern art. As many of the other reviews mention, the bathroom is very cool and is a work of art in itself.
As for the food, all four of us were pleased with our meals while we thought some minor improvements would go a long way in making a good meal a great one. My fish was a bit on the over done side and the blueberry balsamic glaze was over-reduced but I appreciated its unique flavor. The halibut appetizer was great. While the two wait staff were very friendly and were quite attentive in terms of refilling our water, we did have to wait a while for our wine to be opened and requests regarding two of the meals were overlooked. All in all, Triptych gets a positive review and after it works out a couple of its kinks/growing pains, has the potential to be a great off-the-beaten track gem. ”

“ After seeing so much hoopla, I know I'm going to get needles into my voodoo doll..... For lunch, I had the overcooked flank streak, which although had some flavor, would have been edible had it been cooked a medium rare or rare and sliced in thin strips on the bias, the other dish was the dry chicken breast. The reason chicken is usually overcooked is because there is a fine timeline between done with juices and done dry ,it’s about 1 minute, since after you pull it,it will continue to cook, and in a busy kitchen,it's almost impossible to do it that precisely and people freak out at a little pink in poultry. The result is dry chicken. Unless you brine the meat, timing is everything, so for dry flank and dry chicken, I don’t need to pay that kind of price! And the menu was a little boring. I would suggest changing the items to something that is not as time sensitive. The service was OK; the place seemed busy but wasn’t full. But that’s just my opinion. Why no California wine? ”

“ nice place, went on a weds night (I do hope they get busier! we literally had the place to ourselves) Must disagree with earlier neg review on the scallops- that was probably the star of the menu. Nicely done, large! and they gave us extra. The steak- that you might be more careful, order medium or better. Efficient pleasant service, borderline comfort (though elegant) food, adequate wine list for what was offered. Nice time, you wont be disappointed. And the bathroom is a must see. ”

“ I was one of the lucky winners to receive the free dinner voucher. I took my friend Lydia and we ate and ate and still had leftovers with that certificate! We started out with the lucious halibut with pineapple and curry. Tasty! Then had the fried artichoke salad with Humbolt Fog goat cheese. The artichokes weren't my favorite and I love artichokes. For dinner we had the panfried seabass with blueberry balsamic glaze which was delicate. Also the pork loin with red chard which sort of tasted and looked boiled. Sides were spinach and yukon gold potatoes. They were great. For dessert he brought us some fudge brownie with raspberry sauce which was great. We were so full though at that point. The wine by the glass is reasonable and a good pour. Don't miss out on the disco bathroom when you go there! I always am checking that out because you see how clean a place can be by the bathroom sometimes. Overall David gave great service and the food was good. ”

“ I tried the octopus salad and the special ahi poke. Both were great -- I was impressed with the preparation of the octopus, which can turn out chewey if one is not careful. The lamb chops are juicy yet crispy, with caramelized pears on top. Very tasty. The bathroom is an experience not to be missed. ”

“ Triptych is a rare find. The food is marvelous and fair priced. Our family of 5 dined late at night on "mother's day" after they had had a very busy brunch crowd. The service was perfect, only the sou-chef was in the kitchen and the food was fabulous. Every single dish we all had was superb: soup, artichoke salad, ravioli, steak, sea bass, tofu, all the side dishes, wine, 4 deserts. The atmosphere is high tech hip with warmth. Highly recommended.

“ I have to admit that I was a little heartbroken when I first saw this place. I work near here and was a big fan of the Patisserie Cafe for lunch, so when I saw it had changed I was worried. I've only been here once, but so far it still seems like a good place for lunch. I had the s**taki ravioli with a glass of their house white and it was perfect on that sunny day. The wine list does seem to complement well. The jury is still out for me, but so far I like what I see...and taste. If you're going to be snooty and use french, soit sur que tu l'ecris bien. "Potage" is soup. "Portage" is a city in India.

“ Unique, very modern industrial space with appropriately modern, abstract art, complete with DJ spinning mellow techno. The wine list was the most disappointing element - it's very short and mostly french, and they clearly tried to keep the prices down (average bottle $25) to encourage diners to have wine, but the bottles could have been better for the same prices had they not gone overseas for them. The ravioli, halibut, and steak were all fantastic though the steak was slightly overcooked.

“ Overall, I have to say this is the best meal I've had from start to finish in a LONG time (and we eat out a LOT). My wife and I started with the Portage de Jour (that's soup for you) and the cheese ravioli. I had two spoonfuls of the soup and it was wonderful. I only ordered the ravioli because my wife wanted both and after one bite, I wasn't prepared to share anymore! Wonderful sauce complemented the ravioli. For the main course, I had the skirt steak. It was cooked rare to perfection. My vegetarian wife had a vegan tofu dish that was equal to the steak (only without the meat). The potato/spinach side of dish was so good I ate every bite. We finished the meal with a lemon bar and chocolate pyramid - both superb.
Overall, the dining experience was top notch. Prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is terrific (I did see the disco bathroom and it's very cool). Wine list is short but the selections complement the menu nicely! GREAT SERVICE - Highly recommend. ”

“ Triptych is a cute little place, but the food disappoints. The scallops were overcooked and rubbery, and the rotisserie lamb was very tough without any flavor, which also goes for the accompanying side of spinich and potatoes. The young staff definitely aims to please, but the food is not the draw. As we were leaving with our plates half full, we tried to eat next door @ Basil. It may have been an off night, but I haven't had a meal this "off" in a while. My only regret is I didn't get a chance to check out that fabulous DISCO bathroom. ”

“ Update. OK so this was my 3rd time back now (my b/f & I have each won...besides the time we went ourselves). The 2nd time was better and the last was overall pretty good. I really like the casual cute atmosphere and even though the service can be a bit slow to start they are super friendly. Still not one of my absolute favs...but something about it I really like. I am excited to give thier brunch a try...benedicts & beneigts (whatever---'nawlins doughnuts ;0)
Well we tried this place tonight. I cannot agree with any of the reviews. We shared the soup of the day (veggie) and the fried artichoke salad. Soup was OK...bland. Salad was yummy because of the arugula---the goat cheese was nice...the fried artichokes were NOT a good addition...overall salad was not well combined.
For the mains I had the scallops and my b/f had the lamb. Scallops were overcooked and the sauce had too much sherry and sugar---I left 2 1/2 scallops on the plate (out of 4). THe lamb may be the WORST presentation I ”

“ Wayne and I were lucky enough to enjoy a tasting of the skillet seared Sea bass with a blueberry balsamic glaze. The berry glaze is just enough to be unique, however does not dominate, and allows the quality of the fish to speak for itself. The décor is modern and features local artists work through out. Also they have a lovely garden/patio in the back that would be the ideal setting for brunch. One more thing, you must and I mean MUST check out the restroom, it's a time warp back to the 1970's…its disco baby!
UPDATE: We went for the full dinner experience this time and were not disappointed! I started with the Fried Artichoke Salad, lovely mix of flavors and textures. For my main I had the Leg of Lamb, it was perfectly cooked and a very LARGE portion, so large I could not finish it. Everyone at the table shared and it was decided that my lamb was the top entrée of the evening. Next time I really want to try the Warm Chocolate Molten Cake, I was too stuffed this visit. Enjoy!
