“ Make no bones about it, Greens is so (Zen) special. Hi ceiling w/ chalet feel, intimacy like Napa cellar, & serene marina view. F%d is super delicious. Masa Harina crepe ($25) was stuffed w/ grilled onions, roasted tomatoes, poblano chilies, cheddar, smoked cheese, marjoram & sage. V. complex flavors, A-. On d side, sauteed collard greens & grilled garnet yams wer all tender w/o fibers. I can see fresh organic produce from designated farm & talented c%king can make veggies taste better than meat. Our guests had yellow curry rice ($22) w/ 6 veggies c%ked in coconut milk & 4 herbs ("t% sweet"), & stuffed portobello mushr%ms ($25). desserts wer great t%. Persimmon tart ($8.50) l%ked like pumpkin pie but tasted fruity & less sweet. Hazelnut caramel ($8) was medium dense w/ dried fruits on side, quite tasty. Cappuccino was strong w/ extra thick froth. Our server was patient w/ our slo ordering, returned many times & explained details. Hot H2O in teapot was refilled. Zensational place! 3.5* ”

“ Surprisingly, a Saturday evening reservation at Greens was possible just a day ahead. My mother, restauranteur sister, and I chose dishes that were easy to share, of which there are many on the menu. Though we were not transported to heavenly bliss by any of them, all were interesting and satisfying. I particularly remember the veggie brochettes. It's easier to omit a meat centerpiece with this manner of taste variety. We had a window table, desirable because we could watch the yachts. Our server was discreetly attentive. Aside from the yachts outside, the ambience was not as elegant as I expected (first-time visit), but in all the spot is a perfect dining venue pre- or post-event at Fort Mason. ”

“ There's no denying the kitchen was in the weeds (snort!) from go, but with good help, the best seat in the house, wonderful company, and the best bottle of albarino, ever, it didn't seem to matter. We started with a glass of champagne which arrived 40 minutes before the bread, so the hour wait for aps didn't hurt so much either. That the sun set during our wait also took the pain out of it all. When they arrived, the aps were excellent. Having read the three item entree menu several times before ordering, I am certain no mention was made of the particularly bitter greens that lurked under the mushroom filo entree, but they were there - along with their really woodsy stems. Had the rest of it not been so very tasty, I would have considered it a bad miss. Maybe it was anyway. The griddle cake entree was excellent. The chocolate and sorbet desserts were excellent, as were the dessert wines. I should probably give this a neutral but the food was good enough to win out over the crap timing. ”

“
Pros: Great view of the marina, pretty good food (unless you've been to a real gourmet vegetarian restaurant like Moosewood in Ithaca, NY)
Cons: VERY NOISY -- so much so that it's hard to have a conversation. Poor service (@ brunch on a Saturday). Steep prices for small portions.
Overall: Definitely not recommended if you're looking for excellent food at a reasonable price. ”

“ If a restaurant is all gimmick, it's difficult to enjoy eating there, even if there's substance lurking somwhere behind the gimmick. Green's is a vegetarian-only restaurant, but that theme in no way mars the dining experience. My friend and I shared a sampler appetizer platter, which was a bit light on food considering the $13 price: 2 wedges of strawberry-colored beets, 2 wedges of dark beets, 1 crostini slice with fresh soft cheese, 1 mini-size filo packet with delicious leek filling, and about 1/3 cup of faro salad with a handful of cut asparagus. Everything on the plate was delicious, but there's wasn't too much of it to go around. However, the entrees were not light on food. Spring pea and asparagus ravioli were done exceptionally well--the filling was toothsome as dense cheese and all the flavors were light to balance the palette. I was won over by pearl cous cous with huge pistachioes and soft cherries, the bed for a brochette (skewered and sauced vegetables with firm tofu). Int ”

“ I wasn't expecting much from this place but it really surprised me (in a good way). My appetizer and meal were both wonderful...way better than I thought. I loved the ambiance too. The waitstaff were a bit inattentive but friendly. I will definitely go back here. ”

“ It'd been almost 10 years since I'd last been to Greens. We went last week, with a couple of friends. Not as good as I remembered, but still not bad. A bit pricey, but you're also paying for the view. ”

“ I don't know why we don't eat here every week... Splendid view. Attentive and swift service. delicious food. The room is a bit cavernous but the tall ceilings and big windows accentuate the too die for view and fill the restaurant with lots of light. We dropped in and had to wait at least 20 minutes as every table was taken but we are glad we did.
Brochettes are fantastic. Crisp and nicely grilled. We are not veggie but enjoyed our meal and even had a hard time trying to decide as everything on the menu sounded tempting. Highly recommended for locals. Highly recommended to show off to out of town guests our gorgeous water view!! ”

“
Huge points for Greens. You could go there for the view alone. A few years ago, my boyfriend was put on a special diet before he had surgery. No iodine. That's a tough one. We couldn't eat out for two months. Enter Greens restaurant to the rescue. I called ahead and told them our predicament. They said, 'No problem - tell us what he'd like off the menu and we will prepare it without salt for him ahead of time from scratch.' Really? Yep. And for that I am in love with Greens forever. And ever. I personally think the curry is the tastiest item on the menu. ”

“ Reservations were easy to make, and our request for a window seat was granted. We shared the mediterranean sampler, and the spicy tomato jam was fought over. Everyone was very pleased with their meal. I ordered the mesquite grilled brochettes (shish kabobs) over a bed of cherry almond couscous. Mmmm. All of the veggies and tofu were perfectly spiced, and the couscous was wonderful. Our waitress was VERY un-enthusiatic when it came to her job. We asked her for a recommendation and she begrudgingly told us what she liked off the menu. Luckily the food made up for it. ”

“ They do good with baked items for breakfast and the Israeli couscous is remarkable (sweet n chewy like tapioca). As far as the menu, Greens doesn't compare to new edgier vegatarian restaurants. Greens is more of a rustic workhorse of a restaurant that you can expect good service, awesome views and decor, and reliable veggie food. Yes it is expensive, but you get what you pay for, locally bought produce hand picked by the chef, mostly organic and sustainable agriculture produce. They also have a large wine assortment and a knowledgable staff for your assistance. Hey sucka's who complain that they could make the same food at home for cheaper, spare us your idiocy and just stay at home! Obviously you don't understand the concept of enjoying a high end restaurant. ”

“ I don't usually write reviews but I felt compelled to try to save others from spending a lot of money on really bad food. I am from New Orleans. We evacuated due to Katrina and became vegetarians after cleaning our freezer due to no power for 1 1/2 months. We just came back from a much needed vacation to beautiful California. The only negative experience was at Greens. This was by far the worst food my partner and I have ever had in our lives! It was cold, & tasteless, We had two main entrees and one appetizer. We brought our own bottle of wine and the check was $82.The tortillas on the two enchiladas were hard . The beans were very cold . My partner had Curry but couldn't even eat it....It was bland and cold. Our appetizer was advertised as different cheeses with warm walnut bread. There were three small pieces of cold walnut bread. Each piece was the size of a 1/4 piece of toast presented with two small squares of two cheeses.Very small portions and Horrible. We're still upset! ”

“ Greens does have a beautiful view. I would definitely come here on the weekend for brunch to impress veggie-eating, out-of-towner friends. We brought a vegetarian friend of ours here and she was blown away by the delicious food. It's far too expensive for me, but I would defintiely take good friends here, if they couldn't or wouldn't eat meat.

“ Good with room for growth. Greens has a lovely view and manages to balance a relaxed with a slightly refined atmosphere. The menu rotates and you can purchase a couple different cookbooks with a variety of their vegetarian recipes. The menu and portions seem to way more heavily to a carb then a greens side. I did enjoy the brochettes, a tofu and veggie kabob over almond, currant couscous. Their famous black bean chili, which I tried for the first time was good but not memorable. I was, however, reassured by a fellow dining companion that usually it was more zesty. Their appetizer portions were a bit on the small side for the cost. I finished my lunch with a cherry chocolate cookie to go, which was a bit on the dry side and I couldn't taste the cherry liquor. There doesn't seem to be a large range on spices and menu items seem to be all very mild in flavor. I would like to see them up the greens to carb ratio and add a little more spice to some, not all of their menu choices. ”

“ The main thing about Greens these days is the location and the beautiful interior. As for the food, it's fine, but nothing really special. When the restaurant first opened it was rare to see a salad of baby greens. Now that kind of food is commonplace (which is great) but Greens hasn't really evolved. It's probably best for lunch or if you have friends in town who will enjoy the setting. It's especially good if the friends are paying! Greens always ends up costing more than you expect. (A small sandwich, side salad, and drink at the take-out counter can run close to $20.)

“ After several visits over the last 5 years, Greens is still on my list of favorites. It is especially a nice place to take out of town guests. At the latest visit the service was exceptional and the food delicious. Only disappointment was not having room for dessert. I guarantee even non-vegetarians will find something they love on this menu! ”

“ it's good food for sure. they use quality ingredients. the view is fantastic- golden gate bridge at sunset out the window is really incredible. staff is knowledgable about what they serve and friendly. i think it's overpriced tho. really can't get out of there for under $20 if you just order an entre. small portions, but the food is quality so you feel full and like you've eaten something good for you. ”

“ Ate here again after a 5-year hiatus...and was not disappointed. We enjoyed the $46 p.p. prix fixe menu: bread, goat cheese & olive starter (standard), potato griddle cakes & savoy spinach salad (both excellent), the phyllo chiles & corn "bag", and vegetable gratin for entrees (preferred the phyllo dish, but the gratin was nice too--the fennel could have been better cooked), and chocolate/marscapone trifle and pistachio cannoli for dessert. Mint tea, and lemon verbena spritzer to drink. All this with probably the best view of the marina, Bay and GG Bridge possible... Heavenly! ”

“ The bloom is off this rose.
This used the only place to go for upscale vegetarian, but those days are gone. Other restaurants have made it easy to find high-quality vegetarian cuisine in their menu, or will prepare to order. It's good, but it doesn't stand out and is pricey compared to other places.
Go for the view.

“ I have to echo much of what PhoodiePham said. Greens certainly is a legend in the upscale vegetarian restaurant world and the food is good but I wasn't hugely impressed. Located right on the water, the setting is cool and there's always plenty of parking. I'd go there for the experience but it's not a restaurant I'd care to revisit on my dime with any frequency. ”

“ Greens is one of those restaurants that you should experience because of it's reputation and contribution to vegetarian cuisine. The food is fresh and well prepared. That being said, I personally think that it's past it's prime. The food is not that exceptional, especially for the price, and the service is inconsistent. It's still a great place for upscale vegetarian fare, but I felt that they were relying more on their reputation and, in my opinion, they didn't live up to it. ”

“ I adore Greens. I ate there today and it was so wonderful. Absolutely fantastic brunch with such fresh vegetables: I spent about 20 dollars to sit with four friends, eat exquisite food (goat cheese and carmalized onion frittata w/beet salad and a soy chai) that I knew was prepared with care and was vegetarian while staring at a simply fabulous view of the marina. The Tofu Sandwhich is also incredible! I try to go there as often as I can. Lots of parking too. :) http://greensrest.citysearch.com/ ”
