It's your classic cafeteria line style place. Went there with my folks and a friend a couple weeks ago and had some pretty decent rice pudding. It will of course attract the tourists, but the food isn't bad if you're into the roastbeef sandwich kinda scene. Review #20262

If you're just hungry, want something quick, filling and relatively cheap, just go and stick with the corned beef and boiled potatoes which don't suffer much from the effects of the steam table-the cabbage can be a soggy mess though. It's cafeteria style so don't expect service but at least the times I've been there, the guys behind the counter and the table bussers were perfectly pleasant. I actually do like the old wooden booths and the old Seals baseball decor. It can be a world away from the glitzy shopping mecca that a lot of Union Square has become. Review #20040

I came here hoping to get breakfast because I thought they served it all day, but I was wrong. So I got the special, BBQ sandwich. it wasn't bad, but I don't expect much from BBQ outside of Texas. Anyway- that and a couple sides and a soda was $15. I didn't expect that high a price for the special of the day. There was definitely a lot of food, but I would have preferred less food and a lower price. The servers seemed disinterested in serving, but the line moved quickly. As some of the other reviewers have said, it's a good place to get something filling, fast. But it is hot tray food, just know that going in. Review #17516

I'm giving this place a positive because I think others have missed the point- you get something decent to eat really fast with no hassles. The food is ok, nothing fancy. If you are staying in the downtown area for a couple of days it is a great place to eat to get something in your belly rather than having a fancy restaurant-style dinner for every meal. Review #15443

Update. Bubba was in town. I had turkey with mashed potatoes. Decent taste for what it is. Big portions. Popular with seniors and tourists. When my brother, with the terribly unsophisticated palate, comes to town, he eats here several times in a visit. It is cafeteria hot table midwestern food. I cringe. I am not a snob. I cringe. The sports bar atmosphere just adds to the unpleasantness for me. I don't feel like I am going out to eat when we end up here. He loves their meatloaf. I will only go here when he is in town, and I usually try to lure him away to another place that is not too adventurous for him but that at least is not a hot plate table. If you want a flashback to the MCL Cafeteria, then head here for food. If you like a sportsbar environment this may work for you. If you are new to SF, and are use to eating Ohio cuisine, then you may be in heaven here. Bubba is. Review #15375

My in-laws think this place is the best place to go. Maybe it was back in the 1980s, but when I lived in the TenderNob I'd never go to Lefty's. I was dragged to it last year as part of a "hen party" and I thought, why are we going here if we're trying to give this woman a great SF night on the city? It's a sports bar, the booze is bad and not cheap, and the food is under red heat lamps. I was spared the crappy instant-mix meal at the last minute because their credit card line went down and they insisted I leave my card with them for the 20 minutes it would take to go back up. When I declined, and showed them where I'd be sitting, they INSISTED I pay right then. I told them I had no cash and I refused to leave my credit card with them, and the cashier snatched the tray from my hands and threw the contents of my meal in the garbage. Where it belonged. It was my 3rd time in SF and I love most places around especially in Union square yet Lefty O'Doul's shocked me: its manager was apparently in hectic mood... and screamed at us for nothing! It was at the last moments of the Soccer World cup Final game Italy-France: when we finally found table near small TV, my brother got in line to order the food. Manager John Fair came to me and said that I have to vacate the table as other people will soon need it since they already have the food. I declined to leave - my brother was about to get the food and be here in 2 min, yet Mr Fair was not "fair" at all: he raised his voice and said that he can decline service to anyone. I answered that he is not correct in being so rude to me. Then he said that he was gonna call police if I do not leave ... I do not even know how good is the food there, yet atmosphere and this particular manager spoiled this sunny day in SF! Review #15044

The food is pretty bad hofbrau food. go to Brennans in Berkeley if you want good stuff. the meats are tough and chewy and the bread is stale. That said, the atmosphere is great for people watching and getting a feel of old san francisco cafeteria dining. quite a few old-timers come here, along with the tourists, and I still go now and then for the baseball trivia and photos and the people-watching. This might also border on a negative review. Back when I first started visiting San Francisco, I would stay downtown for work reasons. Lefty's was always a breakfast must. Id tell those waiting in line at Sears to go to Lefty's. I would take friends, and theyd rave about the place. I made a visit back there last visit and was really disappointed. Prices went way up and food was just ok, service was non existant as best. Like I said only thing keeping me from making this negative are my fond memories. Review #8972

Flashback to the school cafeteria....definitely....well if you are really hungry and find yourself in union square one day you could try it, but don't have high hopes. The food is basic, luckily the price is too. Review #7695

We used to go to Lefty's when USC would come up to SF for our annual game against Cal or Stanford. The food is basic cafeteria style offerings which isn't great but is inexpensive in the heart of Union Square. Live music, cold beers, okay cocktails. Review #7283

It is what it is. A realitively inexpensive place to grab some OK food cafeteria style. Good selection of beer. A mix of locals and tourists as it is in Union square. They have live music on weekends (maybe more often?)They service breakfast as well pretty cheap---sit down service. Good portions, nothing fancy. Review #7241
