Small but very well kept room. Excellent service - very knowledgeable about both the dishes and the wine. We tried the Artichoke special ap, the antelope tartare, the shrimp corn dogs and the endive salad - all excellent. The fried chicken and mac & cheese were fantastic updates of the classics and should not be passed over. The Wagyu sirloin was excellent, and the fig stuffed pork loin was also excellent. desserts were the cheese plate and the strawberry pie. Very recommended! Review #20933

Four of us had dinner here on a weeknight and were satisfied. Even though the place is small, it does not feel cramped. All of the foods that we tried were delicious. We may have ordered too much food overall, per the suggestion of the slightly pushy yet friendly waiter. We started with the butternut squash fritters (which melt in your mouth) and the roasted beet salad with goat cheese (great combo!) For our entrees we ordered trout with sunchoke puree & mushroom ragout; Bavette steak with chili verde sauce and creme fraiche; the southern fried chicken (two huge leg quarters) and the pork tenderloin confit (so tender and smoky). We rotated the plates around the table so that we each ate a quarter of each entree, and every person had a different 'favorite'. My favorite was the trout. Overall, I think that it was slightly overpriced, but not so much that it would prevent me from going back (appetizers $7-$12, side plates $6, and entrees $16 (for vegetarian pasta) - $26). Not spectacular, but solid high-end all-american in the Mission. I'm sure if this place is really *necessary*, but serves its purpose well. I had a nice, simple salad with greens and a bit of grapefruit; my friend's beet salad was well cooked and seasoned. My entree was rib eye - sauce was on the sweet side, it lacked the peppercorns described on the menu, and well, it should have been hotter, but it was still tasty. Unfortunately, a little like first-class airplane food - but better? Cheese plate was good. Wine was excellent. Service top-notch. Certainly not outstanding, but serviceable. 3 stars *** Review #18693

I was suprised to see the other comments here. We had an excellent experience. Small cozy decor..dark colors..warm atmosphere. Table for two..but very good service. This is one of the only places that charges your wine glasses before they pour..not charge for money but actually pour a small amount of wine in each glass to remove any dish washer residue before pouring your glass. I've been to a lot of very upscale restaurants and never had this kind of service. The wine was the Equinox very delicious. I had the venison tenderloin on a bed of lentils which was more tender than most filet of beef I've had in my life..super lean and very tasty. Started with a warm salad of egg and endive which was really different and delicious..My girl had the chicken which was equally as nice. They got us our for our 9:00 show of Killing my lobster which made the whole night! Review #18420

An A for effort, but B+ overall. Disclaimer: This is a brunch review, so maybe it is not their strong point. Decor is well designer (dark wood veneer everything with cool art on the walls), staff was extremely friendly and talkative. Started with coffee and their donut-holes, which were little pillows of fried sugarycinnamony goodness. My duck hash with poached eggs was truly exceptional (eggs poached into little cloud shapes, oyster mushroom reduction could be bottled) but everything else ran short. french toast was better than good (pecan encrusted), but when you've had Home's James Beard's version (best in the city), you'll know why it wasn't tops. Oyster poboy and some mexican egg scramble thing ordered by others were several shades of boring. You can tell they care about food, but maybe not so much about brunch. Service was quite slow as well. After all is said and done, I would still try their dinner menu. Review #18243

Nice decor, okay food, friendly but slow service. Started brunch with great coffee and moist cake-like Donut Holes dusted in cinnamon-sugar. The Duck Confit Hash was very good, very special. The french Toast was good but serving very small. The Texan Migas (very popular according to server) and Oyster Po-Boy was nothing special. Friendly service but could use a little help: food took about 30 mins to come out and the house wasn't full; my coffee had a teaspoon of grinds. Might, perhaps, maybe come back for the cozy atmosphere if I'm in the area, but more likely go to Luna in nearby Castro for brunch. Review #18195

Friends came to do the Escape from Alcatraz swim from Sonoma. For some hungry swimmers it was just what they needed. They have a communal sitting area which is great for solo flyers. Their salads were barren ,but ingredients fresh. My dinner was so so. I am picky. Review #17233

I liked that Maverick was small & intimate with a warmly colored interior. The menu wasn't huge, but was large enough that it took my friend & I a few minutes to decide what we wanted to order. We started with the crab puffs, which were very crabby. Then, on the server's recommendation I had the scallops and my friend had the steak frites. The scallops were tender & flavorful, surrounded by tiny tender bits of cauliflower. My friend loved the super skinny french fried potatoes ( I hesitate to call them french fries) that came with his steak. Though he found the steak to be a little fatty, it was tender and cook to the correct temp. Best of all was the service. Do you know what I just LOVE? When the server has the human understanding to know that if he starts taking plates before everyone is finished, some people may feel like they ate too quickly, and others may feel rushed. Our server waited until it was obvious we were both done and promptly removed Review #13882

Great little neighborhood spot, sure, or rather great little EXPENSIVE spot. This place ain't cheap, with most entrees around $25. BUT i can't give it anything else but a positive review. Superb new-american cuisine. I had the pork tenderloin, it was cooked perfectly and served with a creative mix of vegetables and raviolis. Fantastic taste. AND, on monday their wines are half-price which is a fantastic deal. Lovely wine list, with mostly lesser known california offerings. Very pretty decor too. Review #13637

I forgot to do my review right after eating here back in early November 2005, so now I don't recall all that we ate (crab cakes? lamb? fish?), but I do remember it was really very good and the service was friendly, informative, and great! I liked the space, too. Nice feel to it. Review #11336

Great little spot. Definitely make reservations when you go, the 14 tables can fill up rather quickly. We went on a Monday night and to our surprise Monday night was half price bottle night--Cha-ching! We started with a half bottle of Laurent Perrier for the bargain price of $15 and worked our way into a spanish Priorat for $30--two excellent choices if I do say. The crab fluffs were out of this world. They didn't skimp on the crab meat by filling it with "other ingredients". These dense balls of meat had the texture of a huge fork-full of shredded BBQ pork from your favorite BBQ spot. The rib meat fell off the bone but, like a few others have said, the sauce tasted like someone from California trying to make good sauce. The beat salad was great, too. This has been a pretty popular dish around town this Fall/Winter season and I never grow tired of it. Sit next to one of the windows so you can have dinner theater as bums and drug dealers duke it out on the street. Review #10791

I really liked the atmosphere here, a cozy very small place. The wine list while small is very creative, very well done. They had 3 flights available (bubbly-which included a brut rose from Michigan, minerally white and bold reds)as well as wines by the 1/2 glass as well. Tried the cincy ribs and crab FLUFFS :0) I like the sound of a crab fluff and luckily it lived up to the fluff name. It was delicate fluffs of crab lightly deep fried blue crab, no unneeded fillers. The ribs were falling off the bone tender but the sauce was too tangy, neither sweet nor spicy. I had the mushroom stuffed chicken breast with swiss chard, grits& gravy. The chicken was dry and the minced mushroom stuffing was rather awful. Grits were nice. My side of creamed spinach was totally uninspired and looked like spinach in milk sauce? I heavily salted everything to make it more palatable. Luckily my dining companion shared his LOVELY braised shortribs with yummy root veggies. I will be back to try again! Review #10590

Had a chance to finally check our Maverick, the restaurant that took over the old Limon spot. The interior is warm and well done for the small space and you get a feeling of coziness which is nice. The wine list ia a fun and interesting selection from around the US. They offer wine flights and wines by the half glass so trying many different wines is fun...Gruet chard from New Mexico, Valhalla meritage from Virginia, interesting and eclectic selections. The crab fluffs were tasty, crispy, hot balls of meaty crab while the Cincy baby ribs were soft and tender, but the BBQ sauce was a little too acidic. The special of the night was the short ribs which were meltingly tender on a bed of rich polenta and roasted root vegitables. The stuffed chicken breast didn't work with the mushroom stuffing though. The Mac and cheese side was solid, definitely better than the creamed spinich which could learn a lesson from the House of Prime Rib's version. Overall solid w/good service. Review #10587

I remember this spot from the old Limon and was happy to see a new restaurant take its space. They have done a magnificent job of repainting and decorating the interior -- extremely warm and inviting. It is quite loud in this little restaurant -- don't be looking for a silent spot to connect with that passionate date! The captain's table and high table in the front are great as you are a part of the operation, the normal tables in the next room are definitely more traditional. The "shrimp corn dogs" are really good; a great start to the meal. I loved the duck...dripping with taste and a wonderful portion. My friend had the vegetable stew in a squash bowl that was excellent as well. We were both very impressed. One feature from the wine list is American wines from throughout the 50 states. Well, not all 50 yet, but a great selection of wines you may not have tried. Very cool. I will definitely be going back to Maverick. Review #10084

When the menu has 12 things on it and you want to order all 12 you know it's going to be a good night. The food was wonderful. Fuji persimmon salad with pomegranate was a nice way to start off the fall season. Roasted beet salad was awesome. The duck over mushrooms was overly salty but still a treat. It's in the old Limon space and still shares the same problem in that it's LOUD. A few acoustic tiles in the ceiling would go a long way to making it more conversation friendly. All in all, a keeper. Along with Range, this is one of the mission's new hot spots. Review #9802

The food at this hip spot in the mission was wonderful. I like that the menu had only 6-8 appetizers and 6-8 entrees - not overwhelming because I wanted everything on the menu. The food harkens back to days gone by - corn dogs (made with shrimp) were a special of the day. Our food was great - I had a salad of bib lettuce with a blue cheese dressing. THen for the main course, I had a pancetta-wrapped trout with a Brussels sprout filling. dessert was decadent - chocolate pot of cream. Our waitress was friendly and the owner could not have been nicer. The two complaints I have - noise was so loud that it was VERY hard to hear. The hostess was not very welcoming and told us we had to turn our table within an hour. While the food was WONDERFUL, I can't totally endorse this place due to the noise and the hostess. But both these things would be easy to fix! Review #9789

This new spot in the mission is destined to become a favorite. The concept is regional American cuisine and the wine to match. The concept doesn't seem to pan out too well, but no matter, the food and wine are excellent. We started with the sparkling rose from Michigan! Really good stuff. It went with my partners beet salad and my delicious creamy tomato soup very well. My partner had the steak frites and I balsamic glazed grilled quail. The steak frite was reported excellent and although the quail required a little salt, once added it was excellent. dessert was really fun. I know Maverick is not the first place to do it, but the homey favorites were great. I had an assortment of cookies and chocolate brownies with a glass of milk and my partner a root beer float. Both were delightful. The decor is modern and tasteful. The service was engaging and effective. All this was very impressive for a place open for just about week. I can't wait to see how this place grows up. Review #8058
