“ Bissap Baobab, with us
I have frequented this restaurant 3 or 4 times in the past year. I am a fan of food that has an ample amount of sauce. If you are one of these types, make sure you ask..the menu isn't too clear about that. Chicken is on the bone, which I'm not a fan of, but it's still good. They have rich flavors, which I loved. The plantains (maduros) appetizer is worth ordering. The cocktails are lacking...I would go for the house specials versus the expensive alcohol specials. This place is good for small groups (3 or 4 ppl). They can't handle big groups..food comes out cold and the service is lacking. All in all, Bissap is a good place for a few friends who you haven't seen in a while..service isn't that great so you will have plenty of time to talk to this friend whom you haven't seen in a while. ”

“ Been here three times in four months. First time, spent oodles of time at the bar, pointing at pitchers of frofro colored drinks and having the bartender making me one of those...tasty high in antioxident booze! YAY! once seated the food comes quickly again with the pointing at the pitchers of booze..can we get one of those...now to the food..its smallish portions, nice flavors, nothing too fabulous but good all the same...I like this place and never understand how chachachas next door can be packed and this place not...chachachas is aweful and this place is kinda kewl... ”

“ Dreadful floor management. Got 14 friends there with a reservation, waited an hour for a table promised us, kindly asked four wonderful people in the middle of the setup to move along if they were finished, which they did, to then have a different host inform me that they were seating a party of 25 that clearly came after us on the board. While the two hosts once again asked for a minute, we sat ourselves anyway, angering 25 people who management let think we were the bad guys, never apologized to us, nothing comped for the inconvenience. Everybody agreed the food and waitstaff was great but I don't think any of us will ever be back. I hope the 25 who think I'm rude got free hot ginger to keep them warm in that crappy fluorescent back patio. Forty unhappy people couldn't get the owner to own up and step out from his hiding place - the bar, where the drinks are good. But this is a very negative review encouraging you to NOT go here. Worst restaurant experience ever! ”

“ Wonderfully flavorful food, and a great selection of interesting (mostly fruity) mixed drinks. Cool atmosphere, usually busy. ”

“ I ate at Bissap Baobab for the first time Saturday night before the Dakarois rap super group Daara J's show in the Mission. I absolutely loved it. I came early so I didn't have to wait at all for a table. I ordered the marinated tuna pastelles as appetizer and was delighted with two large crescents of tuna-filled pastry topped with a peppery tomato sauce. Heavenly! Up next was Thiebou Djen the celebrated Djolof rice dish. The fish was a tad dry for my taste but when eaten with the mountain of tasty red rice, cabbage and yucca, it was dee-licious. I will definitely come back for the mafe! The staff is so attentive and off the hook. They really show what's known in Wolof as "teranga", the famed Senegalese hospitality. ”

“ The delicious Senegalese cuisine is down-to-earth and tasty. Its deliciously strong infused elixirs make this Mission establishment the perfect place to go with a group of friends who want to get a good buzz going while dining on healthy, soul-quenching food. The colorful décor and political murals give it a very funky and authentic feel, and most weekends live bands squeeze onto a small stage in the back and play various types of world music. Most dishes boast sweet and perfectly prepared plantains and couscous with choice of mafe and dibi dishes of fish, lamb or chicken. The back patio is the perfect place to get rowdy and loud without disturbing the rest of the patrons while you infuse your mood with delicious alcohol. Served in huge pitchers, the elixirs consist of infused rums and vodkas. The ‘Rose' (ginger, cranberry juice, and vodka) and the ‘Flamboyant’(hibiscus, lime, and vodka) redeemed my faith in vodka, which, after freshman year of college, I thought might never return ”

“ I liked the food. delicious vegetarian choices. I liked the plantains and that they have tofu. Plus they have belly dancing night a month, with the Three Sisters Bellydancers. No cover charge that night (either). Senegalese food. Reservations recommended for parties of 6 or more. I especially like the Mafe — $7.25 Originally from the border of Mali Vegetables in a peanut sauce served with a choice of rice or couscous. w/ tofu — $8.25 (they also have chicken). Also liked Aloko — $3.25 Fried plantains served with a tamarind sauce. The atmosphere was fun and the place was busy so I sat at the counter. Check it out! ”

“ If you are looking for something different, this is definitely your spot. Funky vibe, and absolutely unique flavors. The food isn't outstanding, a little uneven, but very very good. Great tamarind cocktails, and fresh fish offerings, plaintains and other surprises. You can't compare this to any other spot, as they are the only ones doing what they do (african fare, but NOT ethiopian). Worth a visit just for that reason. Well priced. ”

“ I went to Little Baobab right around the corner because the wait at Bissap Baobab was too long. I went with a party of 6 and everyone loved their food. Little Baobab was small and adorable, I felt like i was eating in a hut with lots of colorful lights. One of appetizers, a half avacado with a scoop of crab salad (I forgot the dish's name) was sooo good even though it looked a bit weird. The waitstaff was helpful and nice. The only thing is that most of their signature drinks are super super sweet. I had the house hibiscus one and thought my teeth were going to fall out after the first couple of gulps, but after diluting it with my ice water it was fine. ”

“ The atmosphere is great but the food is definitely not as authentic as I was hoping it to be. If you have ever had the real Thiebou Djen, don't have it here or you will be very disappointed. And the flavors in general are very bland compared to traditional Senegalese food. But if you are looking for a place to have a drink and dance I recommend The Little Baobab down the block. ”

“ This is the first time that I am downgrading a review on SFSurvey. I have been to this restaurant 4 times (I keep trying), and each time, the experience was mediocre. I think I was being optimistic because I felt lucky to have a Senagalese restaurant in the neighborhood. I never like the entree that I order very well, and the food just seems bland in general. Bring salt. To top it off, the wait staff always seems moderately surly. I tried last night to make my waitress crack a smile, which she finally did, but after much effort! I don't like to feel like I am putting someone out by asking for another drink. ”
