“ 6/08 Sat. It is not easy to find a benchmark for reviewing de Young Cafe. Compare to generic cafeteria or a hypothetical fine cafe that resonates with fine arts? The food tasted average to us. The cheeseburger had a big thick patty and fresh lettuce, tomato & onion ($9.50). The meat was not tender nor marinated. But the fries were crispy & warm. The papardelle pasta was al dente with a basil/tomato sauce & mozzarella ($13). Personally I would like to have a moister sauce than a sticky coating on the pasta. Last time we had the chicken salad with big pieces of meat (firm & dry) and very fresh Romaine ($12). So the meats here are below par. Could it be worse for captive museum patrons if not for Bon Appetit catering? We had better tasting burger or pasta elsewhere. But think about the convenience (don't have to drive/walk to off-site) and the sculpture garden ambience. We also like the dishware, ceiling lamps & courteous service. BTW the Getty Museum at Malibu has the best cafe. ”

“ What a wasted opportunity. I tend to like museum cafes as they often offer some interesting choices in a different environment but this one was a disappointment. None of the prepared food even looked appetizing so I made do with a cup of coffee - even the cookies looked boring. In the future I won't bother to add time to my visits here to make a stop at the cafe. ”

“
I was pretty disappointed by the food the two times I ate here. For example, the turkey sandwich sounds good in theory, but it is pre-made and comes from the refrigerator, so it's all cold and tasteless. I have a feeling the hot food may be a bit better, but I haven't tried it. The setting is lovely, but for actual eating, the cafe at the Museum of Modern Art is much, much better. ”

“ I enjoyed my organic salad, it was very green, fresh looking and the shaved carrots were good too. The chardonnay is pretty decent for the money. I braved the wind and sat outside on a beautifuly blustery San Francisco day. The white puffy clouds greeted me as i grazed on my salad and sipped a tastey chardonnay.

“ SFMiss dined alfresco on a rare SF day. The staff has realized the open-court, non-covered patio doesn't work for most of the year and brought in a sweaty plastic tent. The wait was closer to 30 minutes for us; architecturally the cafe was poorly planned. Five of us dined together: the crab cakes took way too long to arrive (some were done with sandwiches by then). Crab cakes got good reviews, but very small portions. I had a roast beef sandwich (10.50) with boursin cheese, lettuce and a small amount of horseradish mayo on side. The bread was much too hard to bite politely, a softer crust would help. The reuben has sweet red cabbage instead of sauerkraut--neutral reactions. The dishes and utensils are artsy and cool. $7 hot dogs, $5 grilled cheese, and $4 french fries are extra (for those with kids, this is a long wait for a $$$ lunch). Salads looked good. Lots of brussel sprouts on yesterday's menu. (??!!) Staff needs to work faster. ”

“ This review was saved from being a negative by two factors, one the outside dining area rests beside an absolutely beautiful court yard filled with priceless modern sculptures, it just felt really good to be there, high design architecture accompanied by lovely grounds. The other saving grace of the café was the staff, we had a very disappointing below average lunch, however the staff made up for it by replacing everything that was not right and really trying to please us. So really the staff and décor get a great big positive from me, all the trouble is in the kitchen. The dishes read well on the menu and look fantastic but that is it! We ordered several dishes all were very bland, think hospital cafeteria food. Both entrees came out cold and over cooked. Hopefully the kitchen will re-think the recipes and learn how to get the food out hot and prepared properly. Great staff, priceless location, long wait, and kitchen needs a lot of work. I will be back to re-evaluate. ”

“ Art imitating food, food imitating Art? No deep thought required for the de Young café; it's your average Museums café, run by a firm who specialized in restaurant solutions. I know they can do better. Unfortunately after a 20-minute wait in line, my chicken arrived half warm, sfmiss sent back her dish, it was room temp/cold. As I started to enjoy my cold chicken [should have been warm] what I didn't expect was a [got milk] moment, the chick breast was so dryyyyyyyyyyy, HELP --- I need water.... I mentioned it, to a staff member wearing a black shirt and they took care of it. Being a huge fan of [Legion of honor] I suspect that the café is just going through startup issues, because they use the same management company. Conclusion: well rounded menu sure to please most, fair value, and best of all, you don't have to pay admission, to eat at the café. I'll be back to re-evaluate soon. PS, the art collection is world class ”
