My daughter and i came from sonoma county to visit this bakery. my father was from russia and i remember the piroshki he would make (they were the best). i've wanted to go to this bakery for many years and decided to take a day off of work to visit. i am very proud to be half russian and have tried to learn much about my culture but i was a quite disappointed with the attitudes and unfriendlyness of the people in this bakery. i spent over $60.00 there and the salesperson acted like i was taking up too much of her time. and the customers stood right in front of the glass cases so you could not even see what you were trying to buy. i must have said "excuse me" about 10 times. and yes! every one of them were speaking russian. i can imagine what they were saying about me. anyway, the peroshkis were good (meat) even though they were greasy. i will go back again. even though they are a very rude people they make great peroskis and desserts. you have to take the good with the bad. No that's just their attitude, even if you are russian! 100 years of standing in line for a cup of rice will do that to you, I guess! The breads there are genuine but priced a little high and appear not to be baked daily. The piroshki are unusually very large and yes, very, very greasy! Normally piroshki are the size of a large potato, the one I got looked like a deflated cantaloupe and had goopy greasy meat filling inside which is not desirable (Unless you are a bone marrow glutton). There are a couple of other deli's that have better products AND better & nicer looking wait staff. If in the Richmond the Cinderella is better choice as a restaurant and deli! After all, russian food and supplies don't quite fit into a horn of plenty unless you like 20 different varieties of dried sausage! The prices on the other items were pretty much in line with their competition! Waling the snow to Siberia as in the movie DR. Zhivago is easier than finding parking around this area, so come early! the food is a bit overwhelming in appearance, everything is so huge! the hamentaschen are as big as a face! everything i had tasted good, though. they have 4 flavors of piroshke (sorry if i spell anything incorrectly) i saw: meat, potato, mushroom, and cabbage. i tried the potato and my friend tried the meat. we both liked them, though the were a bit greasy. she's been there many times and always likes the eclairs and the poppyseed filled pastries. i liked the poppyseed as well and tried the almond cookies dipped in chocolate and a cheese danish-like pastry, which were also nice, though the almond was a little sweet for me. the prices were very reasonable ($1.50 for a piroshke, $5.99/lb for the poppyseed), the have beautiful breads for sale as well as many other things. the service was a little lacking, tho. they seemed annoyed that neither of us was russian (that's my guess, since everyone else in there spoke with a thick russian accent). but nothing terrible.
