Positive Cuisine: Nicaraguan Mission
I had never had Nicaraguan food before, and went in to Nicaragua Restaurant without a guide. This brought a great deal of amusement to the staff and fellow customers, as I dunked my one thing into the opaque, starchy soupy stuff, which was actually soup that was supposed to be drank using both hands to cup the little gourd thingy. I had no idea, and there was no way they were going to tell me, as there was no telling what I might try to do next, and it could only get better. Fortunately, it was all excellent, and no matter how I mishandled and abused it, it was delicious. This is a neighborhood joint, serving the everyday food you might eat if you're hanging with the locals in Nicaragua. It's really good stuff, but not high-end cuisine, if that matters to you. This is the best Nicoya food in SF... The only thing that i would like to see is authentic Nicaraguan tortillas.. They always serve mexican tortillas everywhere... They're not the same... But, oh well.. everything else is good.. very good.... just like in Nicaragua..... I've taken many people there and they all love it.... People from all over the world.... from 1-10 thats a 9......get the tortillas, and it becomes a 10... La fina estampa is ok.. their cheese is cut way too thick, so when they fry it the middle part doesn't melt.......so the nicoya fried cheese is not the same.... it gotta be chewy... plus, they're way too expensive... and then there's the "red balloon".......which in my opinion if you're gonna have a nicoya restaurant and you're gonna call it "red balloon" then you have brain matter missing... the food is good... the decoration and the name of the restaurant are horrible... have nothing to do with nicaragua... and the owner is pretty ignorant about the country.. Wow - deep fried cheese. The pork was coated in something tasty. Plantains, beans and rice. Good stuff -- heavy, but that's to be expected. HUGE portions! Worth a trip. Review #11239
