Positive Cuisine: Mediterranean San Anselmo
By far one of the best restaurants in the North Bay, Insalata's just celebrated 10 years. mediterranean inspired food made with good, fresh, and in most cases, local ingredients. Heidi Krahling, chef/owner makes sexy, luscious food. Having eaten here since the restaurant opened, my favorites are the Fattoush, a crispy romaine salad with pita crisps, kalamatas, sweet purple onion and cherry tomatoes, herbs and a tangy lemon/cumin vinaigrette..a meal in itself! Her mezze platter is always a winner too, and changes seasonally. Try the Moules Frites at lunch, juicy steamed mussels in broth with a side of crispy shoestring fries. Fish is always a good choice and the accompanying sides are always well paired with the main course. Don't leave without buying her homemade toffee available in the Take Out part of the restaurant. It's to die for! Review #19992

I can't comment on the atmosphere of the restaurant but I was at a party that was catered by Insalata and was very impressed! Everything was delicious. I had a grilled chicken with couscous salad that had perfectly balanced flavors. I'll definitely go and check out the home of this tasty treat sometime soon. Review #18325

Nice thing about this place is the valet parking for 2 bucks! Both lunch and dinner are both good, with lunch being more tolerable in the noise level department. Sitting by the window you get a view of what was underwater a few months ago by the abandoned sandbags. The service here is haphazard, sometimes waiting for drinks when the bartender is busy bringing out lunch plates? I've been here many times and all the times they seem understaffed. The main theme is mediterranean inspired dishes. Menu items are great, especially the mussels and their salads. Pricing is moderate but the stellar is the moroccan Spiced Lamb Shank with blood orange sauce! Nothing much exceeds 25 bucks for dinner, so it's a pretty good value. The best thing is that you can pre order anything and pick it up in there TO GO counter. Consistent food, I just wish the service would be a little snappier! All in all a regular return place. Update: I've eaten here 5X. mediterranean food & more. All the usual suspects on the menu, Baba Ganoush, Spanikopita, mezes, etc... Women love this place. I had a lunch here last year & the room was female filled (120 people), I was the only male in-house. Dinner last night was good. More couples & families than in my past visits. Room filled up fast. Barb had the chicken. Generous portion, good smoky flavor. My $25 beef filet was excellent. The porcini mushrooms were basted in oil & cooked perfectly to bring out their unique succulent flavor. Beef portion was generous. I was too full for dessert. Bill for two app's, 2 c***tails, 2 entrees, big bottle of San Pellegrino was $86. Wait time between App's and entree was waaayy too long, but we were happy when the food turned out to be so good. Nice wine list, average mark-up. Overall: 2.5 stars. I'll go again sometime. If you're in San Anslemo, this is a good choice. Review #12569
