“
Great location with fantastic view of Bay. Had a corner table and staff went to lots of trouble to fix broken blind to reduce glare from setting sun. Food uninspiring and gave impression that it had been pre cooked and reheated. Service distinctly average ”

“ Positive attributes are: fantastic bay view, lively crowd, free parking lot, good focaccia, nice desserts & attentive service. As of March 10, 2007, they are even offering a $30 three-course special, where you have a few options for appetizer, entree, and dessert. Unfortunately, and most importantly, the food is OKAY at best, presently. In past dining experiences, I have had very good seafood dishes. The dishes we had this time sounded great on the menu, but were lacking in execution, freshness & flavor. Roasted lobster was extremely salty, crab cakes & artichoke-crab dip made from fibrous canned crab, and, most disappointing, the pot of gluey clam chowder must have been burned at the bottom because it took on the burned flavor and browned appearance. I have had wonderful clam chowder here in the past. Luckily, the vegetable accompaniments were fresh, bright, & tasty. Even luckier is the fact that this restaurant thrives because of its location and not because of the food. ”

“
Skates has to be the world's best dining-view of the Golden Gate Bridge. The ambiance is casino-chic, you keep expecting to hear the clinks and clanks of slot machines. Sure, they ding you five bucks for a pint of IPA, but then you'd probably pay five bucks just to sit at the warm table and stare across the shimmering water to a sunset behind the Golden Gate anyway. Fifteen bucks for half a dozen oysters dressed with kind of a puffy tomato ice, and some horseradish whipcream. A little odd; sorta interesting, but not as flavorful, in my opinion, as oysters at Swan, or even Cafe Rouge at nearby Fourth Street. Two three-inch crabcakes for another fifteen, but they were tasty and well prepared, with a nice sweetish sauce, black poppy seeds, and a bit of pickled ginger. Oh - appetizers and maybe beers are half price weekdays 4-6 and after 10. Think I'll go back then. ”

“ The question that is on my mind the whole time I am here is "where is the hotel? " The food is so much like hotel food. Standard seafood and steak stuff complete with rice pilaf. It's not horrible, but I can't think of a good reason to go here other than on accident. ”
