Positive Cuisine: Ethiopian Eritrean Haight-Ashbury/Cole Valley
One of the best places in the Haight. The food is dependable and good. The beer selection is creative. Ask for your food to be spicer if you have the stomach to handle it. In fact ask them to make Zuh Zuh if the owner is there. Spiciest thing I have had in a long time. This is an example of why SF is the place to eat. Only wish they were open later for when the bars let out. Review #20877

This place has a contender for best Tsibi chicken! (marinated drumsticks) - that meat is just so tender that it's almost falling of the bone. Best shared with side of lentils (brown and red) with another person, as it's all presented on one huge plate (cuz that's how they do) and of course with injera bread. Try it with an ethiopian beer, or honey wine if you like the sweets. Service is always friendly, and I've never been here when it's crowded. The place is large (almost too large), but straw mats divide up the space so you feel like you have your own little area. Review #17427

We went to Massawa for dinner on a Sat night and the wait staff immediately seated us. The chardonney from cape town, Africa wasn't impressive at all and had a very unusual aftertaste. However, the food was good- we ordered a combination vegetarian and combination meat platter and enjoyed it with some chili paste that we requested on the side. Overall, it was a good experience to be eating in communal style but I wasn't too impressed by the food. Review #15039

eritrean food is different than ethiopian something those above fail to recognize... the bread is more sour and the food is spicier. Out of the forty or so times I've been here, I've had only one bad experience. The cubed chicken is so flavorful and goes perfectly with the yogurt side. The mushrooms are tangy and also go well with the yogurt - it must be the clarified butter. I've always found the wait staff friendly and helpful. Review #7162

This was my first experience with ethiopian food so I can't compare it to other restaurants. I liked it though. Despite what others are saying, I found the portions to be quite large. We usually order from the meat menu though. Two people can easily split one meat entree. I didn't care for the honey wine though. Service was also really slow. Review #7058

Really lousy decor, food is decent but nothing to shout about (although I have never been bowled over by eritrean/Ethiopean). Honey wine is really good, although we actually were served rotten wine once. Review #5427

ohmigawd! I know it's ethiopian food but for American prices I expect more than ethiopian portions. We ordered a meat plate and a veggie plate for 3. The chicken was literally one little leg, 5 cubes of beef and lamb! We were so hungry from the small portions we actually were eating the bread that it is served on - almost till it was gone! Anyone who knows ethiopian Cuisine knows you rarely get that far! The honey wine they served us was rancid and the waitress giggled. Never go here! Walk down to lower haight to Axum or Wazema for good ethiopian Food and Service! Review #4675

They make a wonderful fresh plain yogurt used as a side for some of their dishes. It is East african Cuisine, not bad. parking in the Haight is sometimes difficult, especially during peak hours in the day. It is a farely medium size restaurant, so you won't feel crowded. If you are looking for something to try, I definetly suggest it. It is always nice to try new things. Give them a shot! Review #4353
