“ I've stopped by and picked up stuff to go, but we came for a sit down dessert and oh. my. god. I had no idea that they had different things for dining in. I didn't pick up the tab and I'm sure it was expensive but it was also INSPIRED. All three of us were amazed. I had this dinosaur egg looking creme brule with sesame and tapioca foam. One of these days, I'll have to come back and check out the rest of the menu. ”

“ After brunching recently at Citizen Cake I will say 1) my waitress was not snooty nor rude. 2) I didn't find the food over-priced. 3) The interior alone was worth a visit; it reminded me of Scandanavia brought to Vermont, with enormous windows scaling the length of the cubic building and high wood-exposed beams soaring above. Yet it all overlooked Gough Street on Sunday afternoon when all the seniors from out of town come to the opera. The Betty Dutch pancakes, souffle style and topped with a thin coating of silky apricot jam, dazzled my texture-sensitive palette. My eating partner had a healthful-sized chinese chicken salad with cripsy wonton noodles, red and white radishes, and a peanut emulsion dressing. Something from the dessert case in front accompanied us home. I'd definitely go again. ”

“ You will not find desserts like these anywhere else. Now be prepared to spend a chunk on it. All the baked goods are good that Ive tried. The ice cream sandwich is really awesome, often pretty good flavors available too. Dont expect that sandwich to hold together though, the ice cream is as soft as gelato (a good thing). ”

“ I little snooty. I lose my appetite around people with attitude. They acted as if I was a lower form of life when I walked in and asked for a table, without a reservation. I finally got around to eating. It was fair, but was it worth the irritation of having to stiffle my anger? No. The desserts are fabulous, although very expensive. I'm used to delicious desserts from places like Schubert's on Clement. They'll make you feel all sugared up without draining your pocketbook at the same time. ”

“ I've been here 5 times. I endorse the previous reviews by tastebuddy and eats-a-lot , though I disagree with their negative rating decisions. The desserts are lovely, and yes they are prettier in appearance than the flavor. Dinner portions are too small. The servers that I've met are too "downtown hip" for my taste. Acting rude is not a sign of urban sophistication. I suggest that they start to hire emotionally balanced adults to serve customers. Still the food here is above average for San Francisco when the kitchen is on. If you can snag a table reservation 90 minutes before the symphony begins, consider yourself lucky. ”

“ I think this place is a bit overrated. I'm just not into the itty bitty sparse portions. I need a little more substance in my dessert. One of the people I went with ordered a soy au lait, and was served one with regular milk. She is allergic to milk and was not very pleased. The server came running out to tell us, but my friend had already taken a sip. The waitress was very apologetic. Glad I went, so I know what the hype is all about, and I probably won't be back.

“ I can say I only have gone here late night for my sweet tooth, and my sweet tooth was always satisfied. From the Chocolate Espresso Cookies to the thin ginger cookies sandwiched with home-made icing - yum!

“ We went for dessert and wine. Very good selection of ports and treats. The pairing with the rose creme brulee was right on. My guest had a peppermint ice cream with a ginger/nutmeg meringue thing that was ok. The ice cream was tasty. As for the meringue--I'm not so sure if ginger as a baking spice is really all that. If you're palate takes you into spice cakes, maybe...It also had a house made cotton candy that was more fiberglass than cotton, but tasty nonetheless. Good, pleasant service. Try to beat the post-show rush, and you'll have a lovely experience. They have a full dinner menu as well, which we'll be sure to get back and try. ”

“ Yawn...If this establishment doesn't do anything about their impolite waitstaff, they will definitely go bankrupt sooner than they can say Enron.
Oh, Please. I abhor servers who have attitude. There are far too many other restaurants San Franciscans should patronize. Life's too short to be sucked in by all the hype this place has generated and trust me it's just that - hype.
If you really need a sugar fix, go to Sweet Inspirations or Just desserts. Now, those are places you won't mind shelling out 7 dollars for a truly heavenly and delectable experience. Citizen Cake? I don't think Orson Welles would approve. No rosebud for you! Ok, you can have a rose thorn. ”

“ Obscenely overpriced!!! This is the most overpriced and overrated bakery in the Bay Area. The tropical shag cake (passionfruit and coconut)is good but that tiny little bit of cake is definitely not worth $7. The gianduia (italian hazelnut and chocolate)ice cream tasted like it had been in the freezer for three months. Also, I second all the other reviews about the snooty staff. I know good pastry when I taste it, I used to live in LA and La Brea Bakery there is a million times better than Citizen Cake! Save your hard-earned money and go to Boulangerie Bay Bread in the Fillmore, Tartine in the Mission, Stella's in North Beach or La Farine in Berkeley. You'll be much happier for it. ”

“ Whoa, some axes to grind in the reviews above! I have never encountered anything other than good, friendly service here. The deserts are great. If Just Deserts is your yardstick for great sweets, this place is definitely not for you. I have had the pleasure of having two dinners here recently and they were both excellent. I had a great smoked, roasted duck breast with two little El Builli like exploding thingies. The Sous-Vide chicken is really great. They have a nice wine list and of course those amazing deserts. ”

“ I've always just run in to get some yummy baked goods to go, and I haven't been disappointed. It's worth risking a parking ticket...but Tartine definitely gets the nod as the best bakery in SF. ”

“ Only went for coffee and dessert, but it was sublime. Highly recommended, and we went home with a bunch of goodies from the bakery at the front. Flawless desserts. Food is supposed to be great as well, but why waste the effort when you can just eat cake for dinner? ”

“ went for sunday brunch w/ some friends. heard great things about this place, but was VERY disappointed when we got our dishes. wasn't all that at all. the only thing that i thought was good was the dessert which was too pretty to eat. i wouldn't come here again...it's overpriced and overated not to mention the crowd were in their 40's and 50's. not my scene! ”

“ I don't like sweets at all, so I never had any desire or reason (I thought) to try this place. Some friends invited us there for lunch, so I went. I had a toasted gruyere and crimini mushroom sandwich that was terrific; side of tasty roasted potatoes, too. I was expecting a boring assortment of muffins and sandwiches. I'm glad I was encouraged to go there...I'll try it again. ”

“ The dinner is as good as any of its competitors, Zuni, Jardeniere, Hayes Street Grill -but it is Citizen CAKE after all so they really wow-ed me with those. Yes it's expensive, but if you're an experienced "foodie" then you'll understand why. The staff all knew more about the food and wine than I was going to ask and were excited to talk about it. ”

“ The food is average for the high price. I like the presentation better than the taste. The staff seemed to have a slight attitude, as if we were lucky to be eating there. Still can't see what all the hype is, but maybe i'll try it again and eat something else. ”

“ Ok, to be fair, I've never eaten here, but only have their stuff at catered events. But what I've had - oh my - weird stuff. And delicious. I keep wanting to go eat a full meal here. I hear the design-your-own ice cream sandwich is a great thing to stop in for, too. ”

“ Yowza! Yum, yum! Creative, tasty cooking and fabulous, inventive desserts. The clientele is a bit snotty, too yuppie or artsy and it's a bit pricey, but hey, it's great and it's right near the symphony, ballet and opera! ”
