“
I love good down home cookin but this kinda falls short. I had high expectations after hearing about the old location from a friend. I still enjoyed the food but she was really disappointed. I'd still go back if I'm in the area but I'm not making any big plans. ”

“ Well this is a very nice restaurant with very pleasant ambiance inside. I ordered the fried chicken, mash potatoes, corn and the usual 2 cornbread muffins. The service was acceptable but the chicken was delivered warm. Hot is more my style, but even the warm chicken showed promise. A little dry but otherwise just fine. Not superstar class but with great potential. The mash potatoes were almost room temperature and tasted bland. Couldn't they just mash them a little less or are these from a mix? Corn was good and muffins were acceptable. Overall a nice find and I will return, but make sure they serve you a hot piece of chicken. Warm just didn't cut it.

“ This guy could do SO much to make this a destination spot in SF. I mean there aren't many soul food restaurants in the city and what he's doing is nothing special. First things first, get rid of the canned sides. Fresh mashed potatoes, please. Collards are amazing, though and the fried chicken is really tasty--almost beats Jack Falstaff. The service sucks my left nut. Jukebox is solid if you know anything about R&B or Gospel. Mr. Powell has the best hair of any man I have ever seen. You just want to run your fingers through that mess of curls! ”

“ Powell's is the best place for southern style soul food in the city. HANDS DOWN. I was worried when they moved from Hayes Valley, but the food and serving sizes are much better. Feel free to take a risk here. Never tried chitterlings? Go ahead! You might like it. Staff is very friendly and attentive. ”

“ I've been a fan of Powell's Place since the Hayes Valley days. The new location is a lot cleaner than their former digs (yes I have actually eaten at the new location, therefore this is a legitimate review), but they managed to keep the food the same, deep-fried delicious! My friends and I always get the oxtail (call ahead to know if they're serving it that day)and the deep-fried chicken livers (I like to drench it with vinegar and hot sauce, but my gal pal Fantastica a la Mode likes it plain). Sometimes we'll order the beef ribs which is also a favorite. We rarely order the fried chicken here, because sometimes they can be too dry. Same deal with the cornbread, far from moist. Until I discover a better soul food restaurant to compare it with(a restaurant that is actually located in this city), I think this place is just super! ”

“ I LOVE southern style soul food, and Powell's is a decent option. I've had the fried chicken(tends to be a little dry), the ribs, hush puppies, corn bread(dry), with all the sides. The candied yams were good, but the greens were a little disappointing, especially for a soul food restaurant. If you've ever eaten at some of the soul food restaurants in LA like Harold and Bells, Aunt Kizzy's Back Porch, Stevies in Crenshaw, you'll be disappointed...but Powell's is in SF and worth a try. The last 2 times I went there to fix my fried chicken cravings, the chicken was just too dry. ”

“ southern fried chicken, BBQ ribs, salmon croquettes, hushpuppies and fried okra…Amen! This truly is food for the soul, it takes me back to my childhood growing up in the south… everything that tastes good has to be baked, BBQ or fried ;) The décor and the location have changed but the soul of Powell’s Place remains the same. You’ll get southern hospitality and two fresh from the oven corn muffins on the side. The fried chicken and the beef ribs really stand out, the rib meet is so tender it just falls off the bone and the fried chicken is light, crisp and perfect! The new main dinning room may accommodate large parties and the side café serves up orders to go…they also now deliver! They still have the daily specials and a great jukebox!
