Positive Cuisine: Mediterranean Seafood Brunch Castro
There's been too many negative reviews about this resturant. So I had to chime in with my experience. It can be best summed up in one word. PERFECT. A good friend had joined me for his first ever visit to San Francisco. We stayed in the Castro, and I wanted to take him there by his request. Everything was just great. The service was wonderful, the seafood itself. During the meal we re-hashed our trip and also were amazed at the great presentation of the meal and how the flavors complimented one another. The portions were very nicely sized, everything cooked to perfect. If you haven't been back or turned off by the negative reviews, don't be. Review #20113

We used to love this restaurant and were regular customers before we had a kid. Today, Mother's Day, we had a 3:30 pm reservation for early dinner. We arrived 7 minutes late. The "host" haughtily informed us that they were no longer serving until dinner. We explained that we had a reservation and he said "You're late!" No "sorry, that's the rules" or anything. Just a very rude refusal to seat us. If the lunch ends at 3:30, why take reservations for this time? The "host" then proceeded to tell us that they throw the food away at 3:05, but would have saved it if we had called to say we would be late. This makes no sense at all, we didn't know we'd be late at 3:00 pm. How would they have known what food not to throw away until we arrived at 3:30? We have many fine restaurants to choose from in SF. The quality of the food is important to us, but so is the service. We will not be patronizing Catch ever again and will not recommend it to friends. Review #19422

My most recent visit to Catch was with an out of town friend. We were there on a weekend, and knew it would be busy, but were willing to wait and try it out. After being seated in the patio area but never got any service for about 10 minutes. I asked jokingly if we were in "no man's land"; and did not get a response. Finally, a waiter somewhat reluctantly took our order. My friend asked for a hamburger and asked if they had chutney. The waiter responded that they had chutney but it does not come with the hamburger. He then asked if they can put some on the side for him. The waiter responded: You want chutney with a hamburger? Well that is going to cost you! It was very bizarre. As it ended up we did not see that waiter again, about 3 other people brought our food and drink at various times. Although my friend did get the chutney and was not charged for it it was not a pleasant experience and the food was not all that great. I would not go back again. Review #10372

I have such mixed feelings about this place. I wish there were more places in the Castro that LOOKED as nice as Catch. I love the open patio in the front with the fireplace. The exposed brick walls are stylish. However, the food has never matched the style. It is pricey for the quality. The simpler things like a cheeseburger or salad are very tasty. The fish (given the name) should be much fresher and original. The staff has always been super friendly to me. Review #9669

I love eating in the Castro and have been to Catch several times. The menu has changed several times, not always for the better. On my last visit, the service was absolutely horrible. My partner and I were seated at a table, but our server never got to us. We waited for close to an hour. We were never given any water, our drinks were never ordered, absolutely no service. I decided to never go to Catch again. I sent a letter to the management and they first responded by asking me to send in my resume for a JOB! I responded that I didn't want to work there, and was seriously considering to never step foot inside their establishment ever again. I was sent a $75 certificate. I'm still holding onto the certificate. Review #6477

I really want this place to be good, but it's not. I kept going back hoping it would get better, but it didn't. My first dinner, everyones meal was oversalted heavily. The second meal was lunch, which was overpriced and boring, the third meal was dinner again and I don't even remember it. Too bad, it's beautiful, and the menu sounds great. Just not that well prepared. Review #5183

The two meals i've had here have been fabulous. The atmosphere is great, especially on a breezy spring evening, the staff was incredibly nice and helpful and the food was perfect. I wish i could go every night! Review #4142

Love the outdoor porch especially in warm weather - great people watching. I thought the cocktails were great - the food was good but not memorable and the menu could be more innovative and extensive. Review #3173

The full bar is usually stocked with a bartender who knows his stuff, but the selection is diminishing. Food is too pricey for the quality. My pet peeve is to see the same accompaniments on two entrees or listed in the appetizers. The menu could show some more experience. Review #3160
