“ Love Mel's Drive in. I worked at the Geary location when it re-opened in 1988, as a high school kid--my very first job! Was soda jerk, expeditor, busboy and cashier--worked there a few summers. Now, almost 20 years later, I frequently take my <5 year old nephew and niece there. Service can be sketchy (some of the waiters/waitressses are nice, others are rude), but it's a great place for kids and families. I really only go b/c my nephew absolutely loves the place--free meal cars, balloons, and kids menu that he gets to color. Kids meals are actually pretty cheap too. I'll occassionally bring my laptop if I need to do some work and get outta the house.

“ Over the past few months I've resisted the urge to rate this place, as I'd have zero positive to say. But reviews keep rolling in from other victims, so I'll chime in as well. I got talked into coming here late one night as well. My ex-wife was hungry, and she' s from Modesto, so the whole American Grafitti, apple pie iconography thing swells her pride, so I got stuck coming to this pseudo-restaurant. That was reason enough to divorce her a year later. Really folks, this is very bad food. The bright diner lights alone at 1:30 am after you've had 7 tequilas at Tommy's down the street is just too much to bear. Not to discount that the food here may kill you. You'd be far better off by going to the korean place on Fillmore & Geary that's open until 4:00 am. At least they will not try to poison you. Let's all just start a petition and get Mel's thrown out of SF! ”

“ This restaurant deserves the Red Dot of Aggression if the only positive thing you can say about a restaurant is that it's open late. Diner food is diner food. It's suppose to be greasy. But if you add expensive and dirty to the list of adjectives then I'll have to say, "Enough with this madness!" There are other restaurants in the city that are open late (ok, not a lot. Ok, very few)I will not patronize this place ever again! Unless I get a craving for banana split at 12:30 AM, then maybe...Oh, give me a break. Can anyone really mess up scoops of ice cream with whipped cream, hot fudge and cherries on top, not to mention the crushed nuts and pineapples. ”

“ I had way too many Guinness pints at Ireland's 32 while watching some front man praddle on about his fantaises of what it would have been like if Maoism were mainstream back in the 50's and thought to myself that I was grooving more on the guitarist's girlfriend than his band. Turns out this is none other than Miss Yolo County! So here we all are an hour later at Mel's in the Richmond, and here I am sitting right next to this girl. Of course you are wearing dayglo lace ankle socks--and indeed, you have taken the city by storm, Ms. County! ”

“ great place to go to for a late-night dinner excursion. the food is okay, it's not outstanding, but what else can you expect from a diner? at least it's opened late, so that makes it a must-go for friends who spent the night out on the town. ”

“ a classic place to go at 2 am when you get outta the club! not the best food but it hits the spot when you need a place to grab some food and gab with friends after a night of partying....the salads leave something to desired....taste more like they were just pulled out of a bag....but the burgers are goo :o) ”

“ Great for teenagers looking to hang out, putting some quarters into the tableside jukebox and spending a few bucks on burgers and fries. A place to go to if you are looking for just so-so food to fill your tummy. But then again, you could go to your local Burger King or Mickey D and spend a lot less. ”

“ Everything is relative. If you're looking for diner food or an establishment that's open 24 hours (which in SF are far and few between) Mel's is always an option. Typical food, atmosphere and prices for a polished diner in the City. ”

“ Like almost every soul in the city, I've gone to Mel's both for the experience and because its one of the few restaurants open late. Definitely average food; nothing you can't find at every other diner anywhere. Prices aren't cheap either. Service is usually slow and the overall feeling is that you're at the end of the road somewhere and you just gotta get that burger and fries fix. Have some will power and seek another place. ”

“ This is for those who want to relive the "happy days" of their youth or the romance of the diner days. food is not the reason to come here. Burgers, shakes and fries are the mainstay, the service is inconsistent-- sometimes you can get a real good 1. Festive environment for average fare, but sometimes it's more of the memories that we go for, rather than the food. ”

“ Great concept but "hit and miss" service. Music was so loud that I gave up on talking. Lack of management at this great concept diner. I think they just need some basic customer service training. ”
