“ Can you stand one more review of Ebisu??? The sushi is good and the service was friendly and fast but I just can't find anything to write home about... The fish was fresh; I really enjoyed the nigiri. The rolls just didn't tickle my fancy. Maybe I will give it another try and order differently but than again I have a couple favorite spots that I like too much...
Not exactly a shiny positive but than again Ebisu doesn't really deserve a neutral either... ”

“ I remember going to Ebisu as one of my first sushi experiences more than 10 years ago. At the time, I thought it expensive (I was a student at the time) albeit tasty. I just recently went back and was reminded why it's expensive. It's delicious...and certainly not the most expensive! If you sit at the bar you get and experience and the sushi chefs will continue to make things for you as your palate desires more. You never have to order more than one thing at a time and the recommendations from the chefs are always stellar. Yum, yum, yum. Definitely a reason this place is so talked about!

“ This place has great fish!! We sit at the bar and watch in amazement as people order the same old, same old. We never tell the chefs what we want, we always ask them to take care of us and they do! They know what's good that evening. Sometimes the wait is long, so order a beer and watch the crowds. ”

“ I had some tuna here and it was not fresh. I ended up getting sick. Worse feeling in the world. Maybe I came on a bad day but fish was not fresh, and they should know it. I had some other basic rolls and they were so-so at best. Expensive and not worth it, especially when the fish is not fresh.

“ I persoanlly have had a great experience at Ebisu. I've known this place for ages. Not once has it been bad for me, if you dont know where or when to eat sushi then you definetly need to go and do some more research. A lot of people go to sushi restaurants for some salmon n tuna. Jus put the extra couple bucks for some toro or good slice of hamachi. The food here is fresh and tasty, better yet if you do drop, see if sushiman Tom is there. His skills in sushi are amazing. Hes fast with the knife and good with conversations. I dont see how a lot of the people got bad experiences but maybe give it another shot and i'm sure it will change your mind. ”

“ I LOVE LOVE LOVE sushi- and I had heard all this great stuff about EBISU. I work right in the area, so my boyfriend and I decided to go for lunch one day. OH THE DISAPPOINTMENT!!! The atmosphere leave MUCH to be desired and the service was OK, not anything to brag about. Worst of all the fish was NOT fresh or firm, the rolls were not creative in the least, and the portions were tiny- my boyfriend wanted to go for burritos after. There are far better sushi places in the city.

“ I've been trying to come to this place for so long. I've always walked in and walked out. I finally went there for early dinner to avoid the wait. We still had to wait in line but it wasn't that bad. The sushi are definitely worth the wait. They were very fresh out of the sushi bar.

“ It baffles me how *overrated* this place really is. I honeslty can not find one redeeming thing at Ebisu. First of all, there's always a long wait-- which I don't mind if the food is great. That takes me to point two, the food is not great and mediocre at best. The fish was not fresh and I noticed they didn't use the best cut for my Hamachi. The rest of the sushi was comparable to most other average sushi places. The miso was awful, if it wasn't for salt, there would be no other flavor. Salad was just as bad. If you like teriyaki, you can do just as well buying a bottle of Kikoman. Then there's service. Forget about it. Our waitress didn't check on us once. To top it off, there's not much to say about the atmosphere and decor--very boring. I tried Ebisu 2 other times and left with the same feeling. If people truly love the dining experience here, then they are missing out on soooo many other better japanese restaurants that can offer it all. ”

“ Once you've had Ebisu you won't want to eat sushi anywhere else. So fresh it melts in your mouth. Added benefit: most nights the owner walks around the restaurant checking on patrons and making recommendations. Eat what he recommends, you won't regret it. ”

“ Long wait - so go early or just order a sake and relax. I normally sit at sushi bar where service is great and the sushi chefs joke with us while they prepare the tasty food. The sushi is very fresh and sushi chef can get creative and make you rolls from your choice of fish or ingredients. I don't usually stick with the menu so may have different experiences from other reviewers. Not cheap, easily spend $75 to $100 for two people, but worth the price. They have a frequent diner card - so if you spend this much and come often - get one. ”

“ I was surprised to see so many Ebisu haters here. Based on the reviews you would think this place is either hit or miss.... But don't be mistaken my friend. This place is definately a hit like NKOTB in the 80's.
Many of the negative reviews focus around the area of service, granted no one wants to wait 1 hr for their food, but the place is so busy... you kind of expect it walking in like any other popular joint. However, if you go early or during lunch the place is fairly quiet. The only other negative is the price, which is on the high side but adequate for the quality of the food.
As far as the sushi and sashimi it's definately one of the best and freshest in the city. If nothing else try the hamachi sashimi.... the hamachi literally melts in your mouth!!!

“ I was always told that fresh seafood is suppose to smell like the sea, fresh! Not last night! The maguro was off, not fresh! no excuse for a sushi restaurant. When told them, they said "you're crazy" not would you like something else? I won't come back to this place with all the other sushi places available! They look down on you, very bad attitudes here, bad karma. ”

“ I have always had pleasant experiences here. I don't know why people hate on this place. You gotta spend the xtra couple of bucks, and try the Premium Toro (fatty tuna). Caterpillar roll (lots of eel) is also excellent. ”

“ Ebisu is living off good reviews it got a million years ago. Unfortunately things have changed and the sushi is no longer very good. I was hoping it was an off night, but that's not the case. Things started going downhill a few years ago. There are so many better sushi restaurants in town. ”

“ No, dinner doesn’t have to be a rushed experience but after waiting to be seated I could tell that this was not going to be a stellar dining experience! They must laugh at the customers in the back, seeing how slooowwww they can make sushi and how much they can irritate the customers. (we were not alone in bailing out) After 45 minutes and seeing only 6 piece of sushi, we figured that at that rate of speed our orders would be complete around 2:20 am! It was then that we decided to finish our agony and request the bill. I figured that I was burning up calories faster than we were able to be fed so it was a no win situation! The quality of the fish does not overpower the sour taste of the service and attitude at Ebisu. The fastest thing on premises was the arrival of the check which we gladly paid while making a photographic picture of where not to return! Luckily Kiki is a couple of doors down, that’s were we finished out dinner that night!, In about 30 minutes. ”

“ sushi should be served at room-temperature, and Ebisu's is.
sushi should be bite-sized, fresh, and mostly without a smell. Ebisu's is.
Ebisu has the freshest sushi around, hands-down. There are indeed a few places in the neighborhood that are very close seconds (and cheaper) but they simply are not of the same exceptional quality.
The atmosphere is worth it, so long as you hunker down in the traditional japanese dining room at the back. Take off your shoes and relax. Dinner doesn't have to take 45 minutes, and at Ebisu, it doesn't.
There's no harm in a long, slow meal.
The fatty tuna is exceptional. Eel, when served atop or in sushi rolls, is still warm and tender, not chewy. Of the designer, artistic rolls, try the catepillar, which gets its name from the delicate strands of seaweed on top. ”

“ Well, what can I say … other than it was an experience I would like to forget!
Do you know anyone who enjoys waiting forever for their order or relishes the feeling of being ignored? If you do … then send them to Ebisu!!!
I went to Ebisu (tonight, Friday, September 16, 2005) a little after 8:30pm. The place was very busy and seemed well organized. My friend and I decided that a dining experience at the sushi bar would suit us fine. We were seated right up against the wall and the old man was our sushi chef. We placed our order, and waited 30 minutes for the first roll, which was ok, but not great. We waited another 20 minutes for our second roll. This sushi chef just ignored us, made us feel like flies on the wall – such a pleasant feeling to get from a dining experience. We finally cancelled our other order and left. My suggestion is pass on Ebisu, not unless you like to be ignored and wait forever, for at best …. ordinary sushi at $12.50/roll. ”

“ If you don't know much about sushi and you want to be able to walk into work on Monday and name-drop that you went to Ebisu on Saturday - this is the place for you.
There are two better sushi restaurants within 1/2 mile of the place - if you eat sushi regularly you already know the names of these. If not, get out and try some restaurants for yourself and make up your own mind instead of following the sheep to Ebisu.
Way overpriced. Silly to wait 45 minutes to and hour for average to above average food. Certainly not "spectacular" or "extraordinary." ”

“ We had heard that Ebisu was the best, but the overall experience was a bit "mushy." The atmosphere was humid and fishy, the sushi was a little warm and sort of messy. I was hoping for crisp, striking flavors and textures, and it just felt like leftovers. But my expectations were high, and I would like to give it another chance someday. It's a colorful place that has the potential to be festive, we just didn't quite feel invited to the party that night. ”

“ Eating at Ebisu is sort of like playing russian roulette. If you sit at the bar in front of the owner, the sushi is excellent. Otherwise, the place just makes me angry. It's always an odd feeling sitting at the bar and hearing the itamaes speak cantonese. ”

“ Ebisu used to be the best sushi restaurant in town. Now I think the huge lines and popularity have affected it somewhat. The sushi is not as consistently good across the board. They still have some great stuff, just seems to me that a great place can't be hit or miss. Still on its good days, the sushi is excellent; fresh and mouth meltingly good. ”

“ I think this is one SF institution that is worth all the hype. The fish is always very fresh and the service is friendly and quick, especially at the bar. I found it much less expensive than other sushi places I've been. The only downside is the long wait. ”

“ This is my favorite sushi restaurant in the city. The fish is the best and freshest I have had and the owner, Steve (he's there most nights), and the rest of the staff will take good care of you. [By the way, Steve's brother, "Jack Soo," used to play sergeant Nick Yamana on the old 70s sitcom, Barney Miller.]
At Ebisu, it's best to order "off the menu." My favorites are the Swamp Roll (spicy tuna, onion, seaweed), 49er Roll (salmon, lemon, avocado, tobiko), Caterpillar (eel, cucumber, avodado), Tootsie Roll (halibut, green onions, deep fried) and Spider Rolls. Also would recommend the live scallop. But the best of all might be the Tataki Bowl (albacore, onions, etc. in bowl w special sauce), as this is one of my all-time favorite dishes anywhere. By the way, Ebisu has a small sushi bar in SFO, in the international terminal food court. Great option if your flight is delayed or you arrive during rush hour and want to wait out the traffic.

“ I went to Ebisu initially because I read some good reviews about the place on the Internet and weeklies. I was fairly disappointed though since the sushi wasn't up to par (the rice was especially bad) and the service could have been a lot better. For better sushi in the city, go to Kabuto's. ”

“ Fish is fresh, nice creative (yet expensive) selection of rolls - most expensive being around $15. Have never eaten in - always take out b/c of the long wait. If it's your first time and there's a long wait, then it may not be worth it. Try again when it's less busy. ”

“ I only sit at the sushi bar - so your experience may differ at a table - sushi chef was awesome - just told him what we liked - maguro, unagi, spicy scallops, sake, hamachi and he did the rest - even made killer spicy "french fries" - calamari tentacles per our request. The wait is long - but that is how it is at every good sushi bar. ”

“ Hmmm, Ebisu was one hit and one miss for me (went there twice). The first time, I thought the food was pretty good, but the second time, nobody in our party enjoyed it. if you want a good, dependable japanese restaurant that's good every time, try kabuto's instead. I don't even remember what we ordered, but again, the wait is extremely long. ”

“ Ebisu is my favorite sushi restaurant in San Francisco. I've been visiting Ebisu for many many years before it has become so damn popular. I know people bitch about the wait, but there is a reason why people flock to Ebisu...and that my friends, is the sushi and SASHIMI. Choose any fish and it will be pristine...my fave is the Toro. There are several specialty rolls that I actually enjoy("Swamp Roll"-spicy tuna with seaweed salad). Things like the Kobe Beef are sublime. Thanks Steve! ”

“ This place is a nice place to go to if you like to wait. The prices are typical of a sushi place. But one thing that is really, really (HONTO NE!) good to have is their Kobe Sashimi. It's raw Kobe thinly sliced that is extremely of heavenly tasteful bliss. It's that good and especially as you wait the sushi chief stirs up a special sauce for your Kobe dish. ”

“ I'm not a serious sushi hound and I know there are many totally banzai fanatics about japanese food in this city, so keep that in mind (i.e. cut me some slack) when I say that... I think this place is super. I've been fortunate to go once or twice with people who know their sushi and they ordered some mighty tasty rolls. This was the first place I had SF 49er Roll and oh did I like it. The only bad thing is the wait. But such is life in the City! ”

“ Although Ebisu generates great crowds waiting on the street I don't find that the quality that they offer or the service {hit or miss} is so superior to others, especially for the prices that they charge. They were the first to have innovative rolls which are not listed on the menu. You have to be "in the know" to order these or be lucky to see it being served when you're there. There are a few other choices in the same area that offer better value without the wait. ”

“ This used to be my favorite sushi place in SF, but it has really gone downhill in the last year or so. I can stand long lines and inattentive servers IF the food is outstanding -- but it's not. The last couple of times I've been here the food has been very mediocre, and on one occasion, the salmon in all of our orders was off (so off that it made everyone at the table sick). ”
