Positive Cuisine: Japanese Vegan Vegetarian Mission
I've tried many vegetarian and vegan restaurants and Cha-Ya is easily my favorite. The smell alone makes me drool in that "I smell meat" kind of way. I keep forgetting it is vegan. Each dish is simple and beautiful with subtle clean flavors. The food comes out quickly, and the staff is gracious. I wish I could remember what everything was called, but a shredded veggie salad, and a tempura asparagus & yam roll stand out in my memory. Save room for the yellow moon. Review #20656

I've been to Cha-Ya on Valencia twice, now, and have not been impressed. I'm disappointed because I remember going to their location in Berkeley years ago and really liking it. Everything just tastes kind of watered down. The service was good and fast, though. Review #19207

Perfect spot when you want light, warm comfort food with clean flavors. I feel reenergized after I eat here because of the simple, clean palette and careful preparation. Most recently I had the dumplings served in sukiyaki broth -- amazingly flavorful. Soba sushi rolls are fun to look with a cross-section like the Golden Gate bridge. Must order the right combination of dishes and you'll be wowed. Otherwise, you might fill your table with the same handful of ingredients prepared in different ways. During my college days (way, way back), I went to the original, smaller Cha-ya on Shattuck at Berkeley. It has a more neighborhood feel than this Mission location. Review #18914

Neutral Cuisine: Japanese Vegan Vegetarian Mission
the menu is actually vegan even though the name is vegetarian, the food, is a little bland but enjoyable. The place was packed and the service we hurting because of it, i had to re-order my drink twice and one of my dished came out 20 mins after the other, even though they weren't supposed to. When i go back I'll definitely ask for a suggestion of something that has a bit more flavor. The deserts are interesting and very tasty though. Review #16025
