“
I lived in thailand for a bit and could eat thai food every night. There are a lot of OK thai places in the city but really only a few standouts (Marnee thai, Khan Toke and Thep Phanom). Khan Toke has the best ambience (dates, groups), Marnee thai has the best food but is cramped, Thep Phanom has great food and good ambience.
If you like fish and are eating with a few people, try the whole fish with it's dramatic presentation #52: Masaya Phi-Rhod (Deep fried Tilapia fish in spicy and sour sauce). Also try the soup: Tom Yum Goong and #44:Kiew Warn Gai (Sliced chicken in spicy green curry paste with zucchini and basil), #61: Gai Pad Khing (Sautéed chicken with fresh ginger, onions and dried mushrooms)

“ Love this place, really believe it is the best thai in the city. We recently went there early in the evening to avoid the wait. Excellent service and great food as usual. We had a great combo of spring rolls, tom kai gai, eggplant and string beans in garlic sauce, chicken green curry, and a beautiful tasty dish of prawns seated on a zucchini coin in a unique peanut curry sauce (the house curry I believe). Again, I think it is the BEST thai in the city. So fn good. That's about all I need to say except that my out of town friend agreed and could not stop mmmmmmm (moaning in delight) during his meal. Go there, but go early or you'll wait!

“ Wow, this has to be one of the most expensive places for thai food in the city! thai food is usually reasonable since small quantities of expensive ingredients are used. Even thought he place was crowed and noisy, that doesn't mean the place is worth the ratings. The service seems friendly enough but not sufficient to overcome the bland chicken in curry paste or their special Marinated Quails which came overcooled, dry and inedible. Only one dish, the Boneless crispy duck was good! So here's the bottom line, 3 guys, each with an order or so, average plate of 13+ bucks with a couple of beers came to over a hundred bucks++ for thai food! The value for the quality is simply not here. Sorry, the food was not stellar, portions where modest. Dishes were lacking spice, and when you add the parking hassle, I'll leave this one for the locals, who seem to be having a good time here, you enjoy, we didn't! A tad too trendy without value for me!

“ Went there 06-10-2006, spent $70 for 2 including some beer and wine. My gf and I ordered three items: 1. seafood Curry 2. Tong Yum Soup 3. Grilled Rib Eye with their "special" sauce. Everything was okay and fresh but bland, no flavor. I guess they are catering to the customers who go there. I mean they did not even ask how spicy you want your food. The soup tasted just sour with no lemon grass, galanga ginger, etc. Rib eye was fresh, but the sauce on top of it remined me of thousand island dressing. Curry sauce was watery and also lacked some punch/flavor. Once again I think because 100% of it's clientele is non thai, but American they "toned" down the flavors and pass over the food as "thai". Yes, there is ambience and good service, but that does not make up for the food. The restaurant does serve a niche. Not everyone can and like the intense spicness and/or flavors (i.e., fish sauce, tamarind, thai soy sauce (thicker, sweeter, etc.) that they have in thailand. ”

“ Excellent food. There were so many dishes to choose from! I love the chicken dishes and the Kaeng Karee Gai which is the yellow curry dish with onion and potatoes with chicken. Mostly always crowded so don't be surprised if you have to wait.

“ The Pad thai was really, really yummy. We both loved the chicken basil dish, and there was enough to share one order. I think the prices are fair, considering the other thai restaurants in SF.

“ This place has been around since before the whole American thai craze. They have delicious food and a warm and charming traditional thai decorated dining room. They are often busy so reserve a table or go early when it is quieter. The staff is very friendly considering how hard they are working.

“ Very creative food combinations- my tofu panang had pineapple chunks and cherry tomatoes in it, which I found to complement the meal very well. This place is bustling, and a bit on the pricey side- but no complaints on the food. ”

“ Overall a good experience - definitely a step up from your everyday thai with some dishes you won't find everywhere - we had a yummy catfish dish wrapped in banana leaf. Prices are high and the place can be crowded so call ahead. Service is so-so and should be stepped up a notch to match the prices. Nice wine list. ”

“ This used to be my favorite place in the city. I have not gone there in about a year. If you want *ambitious* overpriced thai food, give this place a try. If you want authentic, try Marnee. I judge my thai by two criteria: Pad thai and Tom Kha soup. (Seriously, how hard is it to screw that up?) I have had much better elsewhere. There is a place about 3 blocks away called thai Place II. The best Tom Kha I have had lately, but overall ok. Marnee is still by far one of my favorites. ”

“ I was surprised to get a bill for $71 for two people, let's start there. We had the clear chicken soup, some rice, the three's company dish with squid, scallops and prawns, and some beef dish with spinach that was really over cooked. I had two glasses of wine because I'm a lush but they were only $7.50 each! I thought the bill was outrageous. The food was okay but we cleaned up everything and were still hungry. Now, I order thai from the local corner place and it's one third of the price, fresher ingredients with more bang in the spice department and it's just plain better. This place has gone down hill and is not as good as it used to be. Sorry! I know I'm offending dozens of young cool hippie kids but that's the way it goes baby! Over priced, waaaay over cooked, under spiced, too saucy, crappy parking in that neighborhood and terrible service.Took them 10 minutes to come the table for the glass of wine! ”

“ This is my favorite thai restaurant. Really great inventive dishes. It is a bit more pricey than most thai restaurants, but I think it is worth it. It is crowded and even if you make reservations you will likely have to wait. delicious seafood! ”

“ We visited on an appetizer tour of Lower Haight. This was our first stop. My son & I were the second table to be seated at 5pm. He was thrilled by the decor and pretty waitresses. I had a beer, he had fresh lemonade. We ordered two appetizers (Crispy noodles--bright pink, EXTREMELY sweet; and prawn rolls--good, nice presentation). The waiter seemed annoyed that "that's all?" even though I'd told him we were just having drinks and appetizers. The bill came to $27, before tip. The tables are very close and a couple was seated next to us even though there were many free tables all around. The other couple was distracting and obnoxious and we couldn't skedaddle out of there fast enough. Don't ask for chopsticks like my kid did: "We don't have those here *sniff*"
I rather enjoy my thai Place II on Divisidero better. ”

“ My favorite thai place in the city. I'm a vegetarian and do not eat fish. Some restaurants, especially thai, either do not distinguish between "vegetable" and "vegetarian" or cannot make some of their dishes without fish sauce. Thep Phanom can do real vegetarian. The papaya salad, fried yam appetizer, green curry with tofu and mango with sticky rice will cost you. Make a donation to your tummy. ”
