“
I had a great time and very much enjoyed the food the night that I went. Despite its namesake, the food is not about salt. It's about preparing fresh ingredients and bringing out the best flavors. It's unfortunate that quite a few reviewers had a not-too-memorable experience at Salt House. In fact, it's better than its sister restaurant, Town Hall. Give this place another try. ”

“ Whoa kids! Sounds like some new reviewers got their salt shakers kicked over, both have one to one, now the fun starts. New digs for this place from owners who should know better about service, the day we had dinner the orders got mixed up, and arrived cold. My app, the tuna tartare was good although missing something that should have been a hit out of the park. I wasn't impressed with their limited dinner entrée selection so I opted for the duck confit, which was ok, but nothing worth having a nameplate on the table. My friend had the tuna which was boring and uninspiring. Either they were having growing menu pains or the other joint is so much better than this place. Expensive, not really but just another place in SOMA. Town Hall is 100% better, although the oysters where good, but it's pretty hard to xxxx up oysters! Maybe worth another try, in a year or so.

“ I was planning to write a review of my Friday night dinner at Salt House anyway, but after reading the 7/28 posting by marinmezz, I am even more inspired to do so!
Yes, our table spilled red wine on the bag. We offered to pay for the purse and provided our contact information on the spot. The guys at the table were very gracious and we hoped the incident would end at that. Unfortunately that was not the case.
When marinmezz got back to her table, she stood up and yelled "Who the #@!* spilled wine on my bag!".... We again apologized and explained the situation, but it seemed to do no good. The owner tried to help and took her over to the bar area to talk with her, but she was having none of it. When she got back to her table, she continued to make snide comments about "how rude and careless" we were and that we had better learn manners. We tried to apologize yet again and kept saying it was a mistake, and she replied "the only mistake was you being born."
I had it at t ”

“ Walkins at 11:45 with no problem. Newly remodeled old city building with thousands of dollars spent changing the space sadden me that they spent all that money and yet didn't match the effort in food preparation. What should have been a stellar business lunch turned into a trio of errors starting with the number one egregious sin of presenting the wrong martinis to the wrong table. The second was the inattentive disregard for even a moment's hesitation to be able to have us advise them that the drinks were in error. They did figure that out only when the other table was able to garner their self important attention at which time they returned and did the switch of stale martinis and majitos. Argg, they didn't even offer to remix the drinks thinking that whoever was drinking them wouldn't notice anyway. The food, my burger to be exact 15 bucks good meat, stale bun. Petrale sole,$22 dollars dry overcooked from inattention, And they forgot our coffees. But not the check! Sorry no return!

“
I've never had poorer service than at the Salt House. Arriving at dinner already dissapointed because the reservationist put my on hold all 3 different times I called for reservations forcing me to ask for the manager to get a reservation. After the second course at dinner my friend and I returned from the ladies room to find our table had been reset for another party and that my custom handbag had been ruined by another customer spilling red wine on it. When I started to cry after feeling so disrespected by that guest and the management. The manager/owner asked us to leave because we were bothering the other guests. I've never felt more embarassed and victimized in my life by the treatment I received at this restaurant. I will never return to the Salt House and reccomend that if you want to be treated like a human being this is not a place you should ever go to. ”

“ Plusses and minuses for this attractive SOMA eaterie. I loved the salad - (the right amount of) salted greens and tender roasted vegetables with a nice vinaigrette. I was less impressed with their vegetarian dish - it was entirely too sweet (the corn was sweet enough naturally). My dining partner's pork dish was "just okay". dessert was just okay too - chocolate cake with cherries & pistachio ice cream. Nothing objectionable by any means, just not spectacular. The drinks were nice, but not jaw-dropping or innovative either. I guess I expected more for the price, but you couldn't be faulted for wanted to enjoy just-acceptable food here for the ambience alone. ”

“ Salt House has a cramped menu, and it's a bit overpriced for lunch, but I would indubitably return for another glass of house-mixed Sangiovese ($8). Tinkled from a draught into a little medicine bottle (which effectively held TWO pours of wine) and given to me with an elegant wine glass, this vino was smooth as Michael Jackson and purple as a hickey. Fabulous. I ordered the appetizer merguez ($11) for my lunch, and it turned out to be just enough food for me. These finger-sized sausages were soft--not just delicate, but truly soft. A smokey paprika-like spanish background was accented by hints of something lemony, but not citric. The dish was served on a bed of chickpeas (one of my all-time favorite and sorely underused foods) and diced peppers, celery, and chamoula (a moroccan spicy sauce). Mark my words: I'm going back for another glass of Sangiovese and the 15-dollar cubano! ”

“ Our meal began with a couple of small plates. My dining partner started with the Crispy Shrimp w/ Spicy Greens, Serrano Ham and Almonds ($13). This dish was simply overpowered by the heat of the greens/ham/almond mixture the shrimp rested on. I suggest ordering the greens as a side dish w/o shrimp. I ordered the Poutine (a Canadian dish similar to gravy fries) w/ Short Rib Gravy and Fontina cheese ($10) I was looking forward to this dish because crispy potatoes covered in gravy is one of my comfort foods. Unfortunately, the potatoes were limp, just like Bob Dole before taking a tab of Viagra. Needless to say anytime one eats at a restaurant and you start comparing your small plates to erectile dysfunction it does not bode well for their future. ”

“
I called Salt House to make a reservation for a party of 8 in January. The hostess was so rude (Town Hall, 10:30a on 12/8) that I'm no longer even interested in trying the restaurant. Bummer. ”

“
I heard about Salt House via Town Hall. They were closed for a private party, so we decided on Salt House. The Pastrami Ribs were off the charts, the Spicy Shrimp were a total rip off. You get 3 tiny friend shrimp. I had the steak, and my girlfriend had the skate. It came with the bones in it, and was undercooked. Nothing too spectacular on the food, but the service was great and the bartenders very attentive. I think as soon as it looses its hot spot status, they will figure out that the food needs more attention than catering to the it crowd. This place has much potential, however right now, I will stick with Town Hall. ”

“
Had a great meal last night at Salt House. Opened with a bowl of olives that were the best this side of Spain. For appetizers we had the squash soup with rabbit - intensely flavored with just the right amount of spices and the salad with candied fruits - a nice touch with pomegranate seeds. The main course was a perfect duck comfit and a delicious although fatty veal (the waiter warned me when I ordered, but it was worth it for the melt in your mouth meat.) dessert was an OK apple tart. However, for me the most memorable was their home made Meyer Lemon Lemoncello which was heavenly. Also their house red Sangiovese was delicious and dirt cheap for the quality. A very nice addition to SoMa. ”

“ I returned to Salt House expecting good things considering my first time was when they first opened, eh not so great. This time my expectations were met with complete awe. The re-do of the menu was excellent and well executed. On this visit we had a lovely selection of oysters with mignonette, fresh horseradish and c***tail sauce; the salad with toasted hazelnuts and spiced pears; the Sautéed scallops and Tai Snapper – both were incredible. The favorite of the evening was the Dungeness Crab Salad that was literally nothing but crab meat with an amazing dressing. The wine list also has a great selection to choose from and a favorable list by the glass. If you're not sure what you want, tell your server your likes and dislikes and they will be happy to choose something divine for you. This could end up being my favorite place in the city! ”

“ Already a smash hit, Rosenthal/Washington Town Hall savoir faire presents a scintillatingly spectacular new restaurant upgrading the whole of Soma Mission with gorgeous decor, old fashioned brick walls, warm wooden floors, high arched windows in the presence of Soma skyscrapers, but offering only passable food. Fatty veal breast, vomit-inducing mucous-like meat with only a few shreds of decent veal between fat globules and skin. Edible chicken roll tasting like it came out some nouvel Swanson's frozen concept, layered and squeezed between watery, fatty skin. Fair but small appetizers consisting of delicious boudin blanc sausage on a bed of overly-sauced, grainy mustard Kraut, nearly inedible overly-salted pastrami ribs with delicious apple butter, crispy shrimp, small portioned but acceptable tasting on a bed of spicy green beans. OK butternut ice cream, too pumped full of air but nevertheless with good flavor. Spectacular 2004 Girard Petite Sirah. Over expansion can be lethal. ”
