“ SUMI, It has been some time since I ate here, courtesy of this web site and winning a prize there. I forgot to write a review for which I apologize, as it was a very pleasant experience. The restaurant is very attractive and the staff was very nice and welcoming. The food was excellent! My friend and I both remarked how delicious everything was and our waiter could not have been nicer. The lady who I assume is the owner was very welcoming as well. A nice place! ”

“ We were also a drawing winner, and we really liked this quiet, cozy, neighborhood place (too bad my friend was a guy - it would have been really romantic).
We liked the rock shrimp appetizer, and both entree specials were excellent. It was nearly empty that night so we had a great conversation. Service was superb, people friendly. The small dining room really makes you feel special. I'd go back when I want an excellent, quiet meal in a cozy, neighborhood restaurant.
Thanks to sfsurvey and Sumi for a great dining experience. ”

“ Went here some time ago after winning a meal from sfsurvey. It was ok... we got a nice seat in the window on friday night. Our server was a little weird and awkward, though nice enough, and fairly helpful. Food not perfectly timed, but good enough. Had some ok wine from the limited list, and the food was tasty -- the mussels were a hit with my wife, while the calamari w/ 3 dipping sauces was my fave. She had an ok tuna dish, while I had a tasty filet mignon. We left before dessert, though, largely because of the obnoxiously drunk table that sat down right behind us while we were still on apps. They kind of killed the experience.
All-in-all, it was ok, but I won't be back.
Still, thanks for the meal, guys! ”

I won a gift certificate to SUMI from SFSurvey so there is no way beggars can give a negative. That being said, the portions were so small and prices did not reflect the food. The flavors were simple. sushi is the way to go and not fish entrees or side dishes. ”

“
So we ordered the calamari & rock shrimp as suggested by other posters and was slightly disappointed. I tasted more batter than filling and it seems a bit oily/greasy to me. The three dipping sauces were good though. The acorn & pumpkin soup was nice. The waiter was nice and food came slightly on the slow side. The warm artisan bread was tasty. I ordered the duck in a cherry wine sauce. Pretty creative flavors that were nicely married with the duck. The duck seem on the dry side. The special for the evening was a sea bass. Cooked nicely but nothing spectacular. What WAS spectacular was the SUMI sundae. It didn't matter that the chocolate cake seems more like a brownie, it was the best part of our meal. Thanks SUMI & SF Survey for the $50.
Oh- and FYI all desserts now are $8. ”

“ Had a nice time here...warm and intimate atmosphere.
We ordered from the 20th anniversary 3 course menu. Started off w/ the beet puree soup, very delicious. I got the miso chicken as the main course, it was tasty and wasn't overpowered w/ the miso. The mashed sweet potatoes were melt in your mouth good. My dinner mate got the steak and thoroughly enjoyed it, cooked perfectly rare.
The desserts and the bread before dinner were very nice as well.

“ cozy romantic little restaurant... piping hot bread which we asked for seconds... the ahi tuna tartare reminds me of aqua's but w/o the pinenuts, w/ avocado and chunkier... i got the tomato heirloom salad which i liked and i got 4 seared scallops for my entree... my gf ate my ginger rice in addition to her "perfect" slab of salmon... all in all, very tasty.

“ I've eaten at Sumi approx. 4 times, twice when it was Ma Tante Sumi and twice after the renovation/name change. Their food is usually pretty good - spectacular calamari with three dipping sauces, but the neighborhood special (3 courses for $25) is just not worth going early food. Spend the few extra bucks for appetizers/entrees that you really want and you'll be much happier. ”

“ Parking was a nightmare but after we finally found a spot we walked over to Sumi and decided it was worth the parking debarkle. The food was excellent and if you get the daily special (before 7pm) it is reasonably priced. Watch out for your drinks bill though, it can grow quite large without you realizing it. We had the spring rolls to start, which were fine but obviously not their specialty. The dinner special comes with a light salad which had a delicious dressing. I had the flank steak which was very tender and tasty and my partner had the salmon which was devine- cooked to perfection. I had the lemon creme brulee for dessert which was very nice, but I think it had rosemary in it which for me was not so good as I always associate rosemary with lamb. The establishment itself has a good vibe, it is small and cozy with art for sale on the walls. It was uncomfortably warm where we sat and the couple beside us were yapping away very loudly, but I guess that's just the luck of the draw. ”

“ Like a night out of Hell's Kitchen, devastating inconsistency. Immediate warm reception and exquisite ambience enhanced by initial spectacular appetizers, a delicious ahi tuna tartare presented on a bed of wasabi-drizzled guacamole with perfect crispy chips and sensational deep-fried calamari with three dipping sauces but ominous third appetizer: over-the-hill tasting mussels in a sweet coconut sauce. Downward slippery slopes with the entrees: miso chicken with freshness rising as an issue, disastrously dried-out overcooked and tasteless duck breast, covered with red canned pie cherries, long in the tooth, no reduction-sauce infusion showcased with bare unappetizing limp broccolini and a week-old withered orange slice. Ginger souffle consisting of old custard suffering from refrigerator burn. This restaurant should know better: exquisite heights collapsing to unacceptable and not deserving a return visit. Expensive to boot. ”

“ Probably would not have found, let alone tried this place without the nudge from sfsurvey. Nice ambience, small but cozy. Waitstaff was attentive and outstanding with the small details. Let's talk food. First, the bread came smoking hot. I picked up a piece and dropped it back into the bread basket, it was so hot. I loved that! I think we should boycott restaurants that serve bread cold. My wife and I had the calamari- lightly battered with 3 dipping sauces and the spring rolls for apptzers. Both were delicious. For entrees we had seared scallops and filet mignon. The scallops were seared perfectly- a little bit of a crust carmelization on the outside, plump and juicy on the inside. Excellent. The filet mignon had a nice zinfindel butter sauce, and it was juicy, but needed just a tad more flavor. Still good though. Wine choices were good, but maybe just a touch pricey. Still a very enjoyable evening. I would recommend this place for a date.

New tagline should be "Fresh, Sexy and Punctual". Missed the special by 13 minutes of shame.
Special Chunch:

T (time of arrival) + 41 minutes: 1 appetizer, need more bread. MORE BREAD PLEEEASE.. so hungry....
Pleas for Help:
please sir... may we have some more BREAD??
Had the Togarashi Calamari & rock shrimp> greasy, doughy, sauce OK.
T + 1 hour: Lime-spiked wasabi salmon> mediocre, rice is dry (not so fresh), salmon nigiri is nothing new or special. Ahi Tuna Tartar= fresh, layered on a bed of avocado w/ wonton chips. dessert & coffee didn't happen (would have tried for banana creme tart).
Closing remarks: " I could bring the coffee..... or not" - our friendly neighborhood waiter

“ A quaint little restaurant, really quite small actually. Nice dark furnishings with attractive art on the walls - a comfortable place to spend an evening. We both did the $25 early dinner 3-course prix fixe, which was a pretty good deal - pleasant fresh greens salad, absolutely marvelously grilled fish (Tilapia) for a main course, and the chocolate mousse dessert was quite good, though it had a bit too much whipped cream on top for my taste.
The only complaints were that some of the wine was a bit over marked-up, and once the space filled up it got rather loud, such that hearing my dining companion became a bit difficult at times. But these are small nits, and the friendliness of the staff and quality of hte food made up for them nicely. ”

“ It's been said before, but this place has very tasty food with a sometimes passing nod to japanese cuisine. The room is cozy and comfortable, and a little bit sexy. It's a GREAT place for a romantic dinner, or just a quiet dinner with friends. Such a refreshing difference from the big noisy restaurants where conversation is so difficult. And their early dinner specials are such a deal! My favorite place in the Castro.

“ I went to SUMI for the first time last week, using the gift certificate I won here on sfsurvey, and had a really wonderful time. The service couldn't have been better. Our server was excellent, but it was really the owner's attentions that made the night so special. He was so friendly and funny, and gave wonderful suggestions on the menu. It really made us feel very special.
The decor and ambiance of SUMI is very hip (or should I say "fresh & sexy") and the food was delicious. We had a couple bottles (!!) of this lovely french Pinot Noir. For openers we had the ahi & avocado and calamari appetizers, but really yummy. For entrees we had the sole (special), scallops, and salmon. I guess we were all in the mood for seafood. Well all of the dishes were great. For dessert we went crazy for the molten pumpkin cake.... not to be missed!
Overall, this place had it all. We had a great night... thanks SUMI.

“ Excited to win a dinner there!
It's a neutral b/c of the very limited vegetarian options and the inflexible waiter. Attentive and sweet hostess. Clean establishment. Limited (as in one) small vegetarian entree and no vegetarian soup option. Expensive prices for small dishes. Waiter unwilling to give us more rice to make the dish more filling without charge; we were charged an extra 5 dollars for a small, as in 1/4 of a cup, of rice. Crazy! If not for the dessert, we would have had to go out for dinner again, after dinner at SUMI. desserts deliciously fabulous! Beautiful ambiance and romantic setting. Strange moment occurred when realized that there is a low mirror across from the toilet. It was awkward to see, well everything, from that vantage point. Oh and they just upped the prix fix prices, so it was $25 a person, total about $26 ($66-$40 gift certificate) for not enough food. Oy. ”

“ This is a really nice place in the Castro. I am a fan of fusion, but not so much a fan of sweet-fusion (so many of the dishes had a sweet-flair to them), but I was able to find some very tasty items! I went with a friend who had been there before, and she ordered a delicious bottle of Champagne (if I get the name from her, I'll edit my review). We started off with the curry steamed mussels, which were just slightly sweet, and very delicious. My friend ordered the bean & spicy sausage soup, which was pretty good, but could have been spicier for my liking. She also ordered the calamari steak which was a little bit bland. I love what I ordered, though: the miso chicken (the most perfectly-cooked chicken I have ever tried), with mashed potatoes and asparagus. The setting was nice (dark, but not too dark), but I felt a little bombarded by the host when we arrived. The entrance is very small (just off the dining area) and I felt he was 'blocking' me from proceeding any further! ”

“ Ahi & avocado was very good, but seasoning wasn't the best I've ever had. Tofu tossed salad wasn't special, although the six or seven tofu croutons were pretty interesting. Excellent Tuscan white bean & sausage soup, nice and peppery. chinese broccoli with garlic was well worth it. Flank steak was unevenly cooked and unevenly peppered, but still quite good, with ordinary mashed potatoes and fresh, nicely-cooked green beans. Wonderfully succulent calamari steak, seasoned just right, with flavorful black rice and bok choi, shouldn't be missed. Big wine list, but only Sierra IPA and two japanese beers. Lots of desert wines. Too-small cappuccino. Raspberry creme brulee and lemon-ginger curd were flavorful but a bit too sweet for my taste. With two beers it was a hundred bucks. Service was great, but the bread came after the soup, probably a mistake. Comfortable environs, pleasant art, relaxed clientele.

“ Add me to the fans of this place. We loved it from the minute we walked in. The decor was stylish but low key-darkish but with good lighting over each table (I hate eating in overly dim lighting!). The salads on the prix fixe had a refreshing citrus dressing and crunchy tofu croutons - normally I don't eat tofu anything. The strip steak was done rare as requested and had a good grilled taste and lovely sauce. The baked penne with smoked chicken had an addictive combination of flavors. And the desserts were fantastic. The gooey pumpkin cake with bourbon sauce was great but my companion's Sumi sundae-ice cream on a Scharfenberger chocolate cake-is reason enough to go back to this place. The individual pot of french press coffee (enough for 2 to share) is the perfect complement to the desserts. Nice presentation on all the dishes too. Pleasant and efficient service. I'll definitely be going back here. I just wish parking was easier in the Castro. ”

“ Definitely positive -- my dining companion and myself went on the early side, 5:30 p.m. or so, and had the lovely prix fixe. Together we shared the french onion soup, delicious salad with what I thought was a tangerine dressing, but turned out to be a "greent tea and yozu" topping. The teriyaki salmon was first rate, with lovely braised potatoes and vegetable. delicious desserts; I had the pumpkin cake with chocolate, my friend had a delectable raspberry creme brulee. Overall, loved the dining atmosphere, very friendly waiter, Riaz and the owner came out to greet as well. Only downside was a somewhat watery soup without much flavor. The rest of the meal was excellent. I'd definitely recommend as a quiet, romantic getaway in the heart of the Castro. ”

“ Sumi was beyond my expectations. I took a friend from out of town to spend my prize for the $20 special. We arrived at 5:45 PM on a Thursday and had our choice of tables. Service was fun and friendly. We split the first course: The soup was french Onion without the glob of congealed cheese. Mixed greens had a refreshing Yzu lime dressing, We both had the salmon teriyaki for the main course, - tender and delicious, along with a glass of Pinot Noir. For dessert we had a delicate pumpkin cake and a tart raspberry creme brule. We met co-partner Rob (and designer of the Sumi Website) who gave us the story of the transformation from Ma Tante Sumi to present-day Sumi. I will return for another fun and sexy evening. ”

“ The $20 neighborhood deal pushes it to positive. My partner and I agreed that if we would have paid full price we would not have been terribly happy. The beef imperial roll appetizer was a winner. “ Went back with a firend - same awkard service, decent food, love that champagne. The food was excellent. We had the miso glazed chicken and the steak. We couldn't even finish our entrees let alone order dessert. They had a very nice champagne on the list from Catalonia and our waiter was lovely. However, the initial experience was not pleasant with the hostess. I had booked my reservation on Open Table and it was not posted in their system. The hostess was very cold and rude and unwilling to seat us. I was unwilling to go away as I had just walked all the way to the Castro form Lower Haight on a cold night. She eventually sat us and she had no problems seating any additional guests that came in. The waiter also did not understand the sfsurvey gift certificate, even tho we told him before we ate that we would be using our GC, he charged us full price and we had to explain that it was a GC again. Kind of bad communication. Food was good tho. Not sure I'll go back. ”

A great butternut squash soup, light but tasty petrale sole, and a chocolate pot de creme that was delicious but I could not finish. “ We were treated like royalty, and ate it up!
After winning the prix fixe for two at Sumi, (3 courses before 7pm, one of the best values in town), -- thanks SF Survey! -- we were warmly received by the
host, and seated at a romantic table, and given two delicious glasses of spanish white wine which went perfectly with the proffered appetizers of salmon nigiri (the freshest fish, but too much rice), and a pyramid of ahi tuna and avocado bathed in citrus dressing (absolutely divine!). We loved the Filet Mignon (free range, organic), -- tender and juicy! -- though we thought the seafood stew was too heavy. dessert was great: the pineapple upside down cake was light and fluffy. Bills are served in thick, classical books, though we didn't get one since everything was comped. Prices are moderate, but the charming ambiance, creative food, and the best darn service anywhere are well worth the expense. Go. You won't be disappointed. ”

“ Came here twice. The first time was with my sister and we went for the Pre-Fix menu. Started with the soup which was decent. For entree had the miso chicken which was yum. and dessert I had the pineapple upside down cake.. Everyone should try this. It is the best cake I have ever had. The second time was with my boyfriend and I tried the lamb chops because I saw from the first time I went when someone else ordered it, that it came with potato croquette, which is my fav. but it came with regular potato instead. I was disappointed but the lamb was still good. For dessert, I again ordered the pineapple upside down cake of course! ”

“ The dimly-lit open dining-room and warm welcome from the staff lead to a wonderful night. Since I won the dinner from SF Survey, this allowed me the opportunity to visit Sumi sooner rather than later. My partner and I decided to order the Pre-fix menu of $20 per person: choice of soup or salad, entree, and dessert. The salad was lightly vinaigrette mixed greens with sliced cherry tomatoes and radishes. For entree, we choose the skirt steak in a peppercorn sauce with mashed potatoes topped with spinach and creamy goat cheese. Absolutely wonderful sauce on the steak with little bursts of peppercorns. Selection of dessert was anything on their menu. I had the Sumi Sundae in a tall martini glass layered with chocolate cake, homemade chocolate fudge with camel and candied walnuts topped with whipped cream. My partner had the upside down pineapple cake with ice cream. Moist pineapple flavor with sauce and ice cream. Service was very good and the food delicious. Yes, a romantic place ”

“ warm welcomes as soon as you enter set the tone at this wonderfully intimate establishment. Thankfully, we had called to let them know we were going to be late for our reservation otherwise we would have been disappointed. we saw several couple turned away while we were dining. best value is the $20.00 prix fixe, only 3 options-no veggie. also both soups were meat but the tofu croutons were def. something new, crispy yet moist. I had the salmon, even though it had pasta {not my fav.} and Romeo had the Miso chicken. Well, happy to report that the sauce on the pasta was tasty enough to entice me into more than a few bites, although I did bring most of it home, it was yummy. the fact that we were bringing it home may have confused the staff who left us with it for quite a while before dessert. when dessert was presented it was the most divenly decadent chocolate sundae I have ever had and the raspberry brulee with the light and crispy cookie left Romeo more than happy. would DEF go back ”

“ Dined here yesterday night and it was great! I didn't really like the soup but everything else made up for it. I tried the skirt steak and my friend tried the Miso Chicken. The skirt steak was good but the Miso Chicken was FABULOUS!! For dessert you must try the Sumi Sundae and the pineapple upside down cake.. both came with vanilla ice cream which was a plus. The sundae was warm and was drizzled with caramel and was topped with walnuts and whipped cream. Like always I finished my WHOLE sundae!! Good place to go have dinner with a date or friend. “ This was an amazing find! Somehow, we pulled reservations on Castro Fair day for a perfect meal. (Literally hours before) I dine all over the US for travel and was pleased to tell the staff they made that night the best dining experience I've ever had! We had a friend in from the east coast, hoping to show a good time to. We were so blown away, by the wait staff, overall establishment, and terrific dinner, and wine that we missed asking for dessert! It is not often you find this perfect a blend of ambiance, flavor, and impeccable service. From the instant you walk in this sweet spot in the Castro, you can tell you made the right choice. We had the salmon and skirt steak with the special price menu - perfect sized portions and balance of flavors in everything, incredible presentation. You cannot beat the price. Our waiters' name was Lucky, but that definitely describes how I feel in finding this place. Thanks for making our day in the city memorable! We can't wait to come back. ”

“ Sumi was quite a find. Full but not crowded. Classy but not stuffy. Friendly service but not over the top. Prompt but not rushed. The prix fixe menu is a fabulous deal at $20. Started with a mixed green salad with no bitter greens- I hate bitter greens. I had the Roasted Chicken and Penne. I never order chicken but hands down glad I did. My friend almost stole my meal :-) I had the pear tart with cream cheese and she had the pineapple upside down cake with carmel sauce. Both served with a light vanilla gelato I did steal hers. ”

“ What a lovely restaurant all around. The experience started off great when Rob came and greeted us because we were from SFsurvey. The service was excellent, informative but not intrusive. The prix-fixe neighborhood special was a great deal. The house salad had a delicious lemon dressing that was the perfect size. I ordered the steak which came with delicious mashed potatoes and the perfect amount of goat cheese. My dining partner ordered the pasta with chicken, which was surprisingly good. dessert was delicious and inventive. The dining room has great ambience and decor. The icing on the cake, though, was that our waiter was gorgeous and so sweet. Overall a great dining experience that makes me sad to not live in the neighborhood anymore. ”

“ I took my friend here for his birthday, and it was a great choice. Intimate, warm space, it feels like a special event the minute you walk in the door. The service was attentive without being formal and we gave our waiter high marks for not only recommending a wine, but bringing us a taste. The food was outstanding. You have limited options with the three course special (soup or salad, choice of three entrees, and any dessert on the menu), but everything we tried looked and tasted delicious. The penne pasta with smoked chicken was excellent. The skirt steak was cooked perfectly and came with some of the best mashed potatoes I've eaten (lots of black pepper). For dessert we had the Sumi sundae and the mixed berry crisp. I want to eat at Sumi for MY birthday, but I don't think I can wait until December to go back. ”

“ i made reservations here at sumi's through opentable.com @ 6:30pm on a thursday nite, so i could experience their prixe fix menu. when i got there the host was very friendly and showed us to the front window table which was reserved for me-thanks to sfsurvey.com (wayne) told rob the host (who wasn't there that nite) that i was coming to the restaurant. the prixe fix menu was a deal at $20 for 3 courses! we ordered sake martinis--raspberry & peach. the peach was to DIE for!! i ordered starter: the carrot ginger soup--yum! it gave me a feeling of the holidays. entree: the almond crusted trout(YUM) that came with bok choy & fingerling potatoes & a slice of grilled pineapple. dessert: we ordered the raspberry creme brulee & the pear tart. both were heaven! service & food were great--not to mention SUMI herself came to greet us. my friend & i also met a cool couple. we chatted about food, restaurants and of course i mentioned that they had to sign up to sfsurvey! ”

“
I am taken back, how much [service/vibe/love] can play into a meal, Sumi recently did a renovation and with a new partner at the helm, their attention to detail translates into a fun memorable dining experience. I had the rack of Lamb with an [out of this world] raspberry & Mint jelly, yep, two jellies :-) there were even slice’s of fresh GRILLED peaches, what a treat. They have a neighborhood special 3-course pre fix for $20. Conclusion, friendly service, fun décor and food that’s memorable.

“ Good things come in small packages and SUMI is a prime example. The décor is asian influenced, intimate and sexy. The menu is diverse offering something for everyone. SUMI is celebrating their 20th Anniversary and offering a special 3-course pre fix for $20 before 7pm, an incredible deal for a fresh and creative meal. The steamed mussels served in a unique sake and coconut-curry are a must try for the mussel lovers. The Ahi Tuna Tartare was beautifully presented and was a relatively large portion for the price. For my main I had the Pan-Roasted Salmon, the salmon was perfectly cooked and the baby bok choy was a nice accompaniment. For desert I had the Sumi Sundae, very rich warm gooey chocolate goodness, I recommend sharing. Perfect place for a date, however be sure to make reservations it’s a small popular restaurant. Enjoy! ”

“ Amazing. This resturtant gives new meaning to intimate. But in a good way. Great service and some of the best food I've ever had in my life. french meets asian. I actually felt as though I was on Iron Chef enjoying a meal prepared by Sakai-san.
I was taken to this resturant by two dear friends for my birthday. When the waiter learned it was my birthday, they offered creme brulee' as a desert with a candle in it.
Definately a visit if you're looking for a tremendous dining experience. ”

“ I was bewitched, bothered and bewildered. The confusion stems from the diverse menu: indonesian filet, deep-fried snickers bar, salmon with soy garlic glaze, Arg! This is PanasianConfusion at its finest, though. Everything that arrived on our table was delicious and innovative. The house salad was astounding with truly fresh vegetables enhanced with warm croutons (cubes of bread, battered and lightly fried). You will enjoy your meal while the gyrating caucasian waiter offers you more ice tea. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience! I guarantee you'll enjoy Sumi the way I enjoyed Sumi, but don't sue me if you don't enjoy Sumi. Sue them. ”

“ Is it french meets asian with a touch of California ? Not sure, but it is tasty. Ma Tante Sumi with dishes such as Pan Roasted Duck Breast with cherries, Butternut Squash Puree, and Toasted Pumpkin Seeds. Complex dishes, yet with delicate and subtle flavors. Very nice....but don't tell the fire marshall - I think they'll close it down....tight (cozy) space....and relatively quiet too. ”

“ The most elegant dining in the Castro. Intimate and formal-ish dining room. The food is classically prepared french, with a hint of fusion, and it's excellent. Pricey but worth it. Romantic setting and service is relaxed and attentive. One of the few destination spots in the Castro. ”

“ You'll get a good tasty meal at a pretty reasonable price. It's one of the best asian fusion restaurants in the City. The place is pretty cramped though. I wonder how it ever passed the fire marshall's inspection....It's definitely not for someone clasutrophobic seeking good food. ”

“ This is one of my favorite places to take visitors from Europe wanting to experience pacific rim/french/japanese fusion influenced food. Great presentations and fusion experimentation in an ever changing menu. I have never had a bad, or even an indifferent dish there. Small, so make reservations; parking difficulties are of mythic proportion. Staff are highly competent and helpful. Pricing is on the stiff side, but appropriate for the level of quality and culinary sophistication ”

“ Good food, friendly staff, fairly intimate setting and nice ambiance. Would definitely recommend. As I recall the duck was great and try the dry (Alsace style) Claiborne & Churchill Gewertremiener. ”
