“ Mediocre food. We went for dinner so maybe that was the mistake. But there are too many other dim sum spots in the city to repeat a trip here. The bad part of the evening was the waiter. We ordered pot stickers, ginger scallion oysters and spicy beef. The waiter expressed surprised that that was all we ordered b/c the other table (and he chucked his thumb over his shoulder and indicated a table of 3 well "healthy" diners) had ordered ten dishes. With each subsequent trip he continued to 'satirize' them. How ignorant and inappropriate. Hmm I wonder what he was saying about us. As for the food~~ The oysters were tasteless. The pot stickers OK. The spicy beef was well spicy but OK. The tea was disgusting. Now I ask you how does a chinese restau screw up a pot of tea? Let it sit for a 1/2 hour until 2 suckers come in and order a pot. It was way over-steeped, cold and bitter. We didn't complain. You never know who we might have p'ed off. So we ordered a beer instead... ”

“ 2/08 Tue lunch. Neat interior, white tablecloth, packed with well-dressed & soft-speaking westerners. Is Ton Kiang a colonial dim sum country club? All chinese staff with well spoken english and polished service. I can see the place can appeal to some clientele, when elsewhere can be noisy & cramped, not to mention rude servers. The dim sum menu seems to be sanitized for non-asians (not a complaint). No chicken feet nor tripe, many deep-fried items, and even soft-shell crab! We tried 3 dishes (total $12): spinach-shrimp dumplings, baked curry beef tarts, seared mochi with custard filling. All were delicious, meticulously made and more refined than typical dim sum place. The Singapore curry rice noodles ($11) were packed with large prawns and thick slices of BBQ pork. The flavor was intense and rich. If you avoid the crowds and not to order dim sum after mid-day (made fresh in mornings), here is a decent sanctuary from madhouse like Mayflower! ”

“ I went to Ton-Kiang with friends the other day and I have to say it's definitely one of the best dim sum restaurants in SF. Their BBQ pork bun is just perfect -- soft on the outside and tender meat inside. Shrimp dumpling is a must-eat. Try sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves if you like Hong Kong style dim sum. Very authentic. Spicy and sour soup is always good with rice. Addd a bit red vinegar for adventurous tastes. All dim sum dishes are high-standard.
I find the service level very satisfying, too. The waitress was attentive and was kind enough to let us sample a couple of desserts.
Between three of us and a kid, we ordered 5 dim sums and one dish. The price is a little steep but it's worth what we spend.
Overall, it's a delightful experience to dine at TonKiang. I would definitely go back again. ”

“ A sucker for sweets, I highly enjoyed the warm, soft, and gooey egg custard baked buns and egg custard pancakes at Ton Kiang when six of us dined at Ton Kiang this weekend. For less than $100 for the lot, we ate heartily: pork sui mai, shrimp sui mai, shrimp and spinach, stuffed mushrooms, Shanghai dumplings, steamed BBQ pork buns, chicken dumplings, shrimp long noodle, sesame balls, pot stickers, and on and on. Some of the dumplings were smaller than I've had at take-away dim sum joints, but the freshness of the rice paper skins made up for the size. Most dishes cost around $3.00 for 3 pieces, though some were in the $5-$6 range; but bear in mind that dozens of servers are working the room, clanging about with their porridge cars and trays of stacked steamers. I would certainly return in a heartbeat, making sure to leave room for the deep fried salt and pepper prawns (with heads) and chinese doughnuts. ”

“ Our 15-20 minute wait on Xmas in real time was 35 minutes, but that's the way it goes at this place. It's great, but you have to be willing to wait for a table. I've only been for dim sum (the eggplant is to die for) and this was my first time ordering off their regular menu. The broth on the chicken won ton soup tasted canned, the black bean sauce on the clam was goopy, but the clams themselves and the mongolian pork were sublime. Good rice, too. I hate it when restaurants give you cheap rice. Thumbs up for dim sum and so-so for the regular menu. ”

“ Ton Kiang is the most over rated dim sum restaurant in San Francisco. On any given Sunday, you will see huge crowds outside waiting--but you barely ever see chinese folks waiting. Kind of telling. The chinese locals in the RIchmond (many of whom are from Hong Kong), presumably good judges of what makes good dim sum, are more apt to go to Mayflower or Yet Wah just a few blocks away from the over priced Ton Kiang. Ive been there a couple of times for dim sum and it's not all that.

“ Way Too Expensive! I have talked to chinese people about this place and they avoid this restaurant because of price and also not authentic. I can have good inexpensive dim sum in either China town or Clement St. The dim sum dishes are beautiful but small portion compare to other dim sum place. Two adults and Two children and more than $70 bill? No Way!

“ Still one of my favorite places for dim sum. Mango pudding is one of the best next to Yang Sing, with half the Yang Sing bill. To all those who grouse about the wait...go early on the weekends. Vegetables are usually good. They could use a little more variety, as sometimes it seems like most of the dishes that come around are shrimp.

“ Ton Kiang is one of my faves, with Yank Sing, Fook Yuen, and Hong Kong Flower Lounge winding out the rest of my Top 5. The lines truly do suck, and I'm often tempted to sprint over to Tommy's and grab an El Tesoro Anejo margarita on the rocks and come back to make by wait bearable...but the lines unfortunately do not lie...the dim sum is good. One of the few dim sum restaurants that don't look at you funny when you ask for a bottle of wine, the dim sum procession will continue on and on. All the standards are there, hargow, shu mai, bao, but there are many other offerings. I'm usually ready for shrimp anything overload...and it's always been excellent. If they started serving decent bloody marys, valet parking, I'd be there every other Sunday. ”

“ I avoid places with lines of hungry people waiting to get a table because sometimes when a restaurant becomes too popular the quality of everything drops. If the crowds' keep coming, even though the décor is run down and the food is sub par, why should the restaurant spend the extra money and effort? This is the difference between a Restaurateur and a businessperson, a restaurateur is a businessperson but a businessperson is not always a restaurateur. Sunday night, Wayne wants dim sum, no line so why not experience what so many people have enjoyed. dim sum didn't seem fresh and the Ton Kiang Orange Spare Ribs where uneatable. Maybe Ton Kiang is riding on its previous reputation, maybe it used to be high quality but that was not the case on my visit. I will not return and I cannot recommend. ”

“ Good dim sum, and best of all they serve it all day. Ok, let me just say, I'm not the dim sum expert, I have had dim sum five times now, and from my other experiences this was on par with the other restaurants. Pricing was on the high side, but the restaurant excels above the other, in that it's not a hole in the wall, definitly a place to take your friends from out of town, who would normally be scared off by the appearances of some of the chinese restaurants around town :-) area for improvement, service was slow and they didn't have any ice tea, they said they were out of it, which is shocking to me, but I guess it can happen. Overall, good dim sum, clean environment and pricing on the high side. ”

“ Very good dim sum house! I've been raise in Hk and go back every year. Ton Kiang is even better than some dim sum house in HK. Very impressive..
Ha gao is fresh, flour not too thick ..siu mai is good and juicy
Baby bak choy is delicious..
I also tried at Yanksing but it could not compare to ton kiang..yank sing is not bad..but ton kiang is better..Pricey but worth it!

“ Expensive, but fun and dim-yummy. I love their lil' dumplings, especially the chive ones. Mmm...
...don't go at peak hours, though...you'll be squished by all the people pushing to get a table. Order lots of different things to get a variety of choices and tastes. But bring a LOT of money, if you have more than a few people joining you. Tres pricey.

“ I went to SF to visit on Memorial Weekend and tried out the dim sum at Ton Kiang. They have so many different kind of varieties for you to choose from and everything I tried there is very good.
I have to say the dim sum is 90% close to dim sum in HK.
Next visit to SF I will definitely go back here again.
You have to try egg custard rice cake..so good here..
Traditional dim sum supposed to be small..not huge..Ton Kiang make the perfect size for ha gao
If you want huge siu mai or ha gao I think go to more americanized chinese restaurant better..
Ton Kiang is more convenient for tourist like me than Koi Palace. I would love to try koi palace but it will cost me $40(taxi) to get there and another $40 to get back to my hotel.

“ Ton Kiang has great dimsum and other dishes. The prawns with glazed walnuts is delicious. It is on the expensive side for dim sum considering there are so many inexpensive places within the same neighborhood. I refuse to go after 10:30 am on weekends. “ People, people, this place is way over-rated. I can't believe the crowds outside waiting to get in. It's not that good, and the bill never fails to produce shock and awe. Tiny dumplings, crappy non-dim sum food, high prices -- avoid this place. It is a decent looking restaurant, but way too bright, and the ostensible cleanliness is somewhat of an illusion (check out the waiters' clothes, usually filthy). I must say, however, that I do like their green dipping sauce. To all the people who call it "best dim sum in the city" or whatever, try Koi Palace (or any number of places in Chinatown) and then talk to me about dim sum. Please. ”

“ dim sum for white people. Whoever put Ton Kiang on the Chronicle's top 100 restaurant list obviously doesn't know their dim sum. The last time I was at Ton Kiang, I was served shockingly substandard and expensive dim sum, including my favorites: har gow, steamed shrimp dumplings, and siu mai, steamed pork dumplings, so poor they were brown, shriveled and withered as though they'd been cooked a week before and reheated just before serving, this after waiting well over an hour to get in. The little hole-in-the-wall take-out joint called Broadway dim sum at the corner of Stockton & Broadway in the heart of Chinatown wouldn't get caught dead selling dumplings like these which wouldn't pass muster on the street. If you want refined dim sum, go to Yank Sing instead, or to Yet Wah on Clement, for honest, fresh and clean tasting dim sum.

“ This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city, and definitely my favorite dim sum. I just went this morning, and it was fantastic as usual. It was great to go on a Saturday because there wasn't any line when we arrived at about 11:30. We had all of our favorites... snow pea greens (#1), shrimp & snow pea dumplings, steamed pork buns, sticky rice wrapped in (banana?) leaves, foil wrapped chicken, pot stickers, sesame balls, and walnut cookies. I read a lot of bad reviews about the service, but we had great service. I love sitting down to eat and having food arrive at my table instantly, what a treat. They were great about clearing and getting us fresh plates and refilling the tea without us having to ask. You know what else I love, the napkins which are so nice and thick they are practically towels. Seriously, this place is the best. ”

“ I absolutely love this place. The dim sum is top notch. One of my favorites is the shrimp stuffed mushrooms, which you sometimes have to ask for since they don't always have them circulating. At dinner you can request them "appetizer portion". All of the shrimp dim sum are fresh and tasty, my favorite is the shrimp and chives. You should also request the "red sauce" since nowadays they only bring out the green sauce. The service is also very attentive and conscientous. This place is great for large parties too. A true Outer Richmond gem! ”

“ I went here yesterday with two friends, one of whom is chinese. The best way to do it! As a result, I ate some things that I would not have chosen on my own and they were delicious. We had the usual (as a concession to me, I am sure) such as pot stickers, shrimp dumplings and pork buns; but we had a wonderful turnip cake, tubular pasta-like things filled with pork, long beans with mushrooms etc. The finale was a treat of little pastries filled with hot coconut custard. As for the service: it could not have been nicer. The ladies all smiled and came by our table frequently. I arrived before my two friends and was shown to a booth and offered a pot of tea while waiting for them. Secret - on Monday, they have Monday street cleaning on Anza St. a block away. Truck came by at 1010 am and I slid in behind. Then walked the Geary st shops for a while until the appointed time of 11 am. ”

“ I agree with whitecamero about not expecting excellent service, as chinese restaurants go this place has servers who aren't as rude as others, though. I think they polished their act pretty well. About five years ago they weren't friendly at all. Sourpusses all of them! I guess they've read awful reviews about them and decided to change their attitudes. Because really, the dim sum is fantastic and the only thing they needed to improve on was to 'westernize' their service a bit (meaning: let go of the frowns and "liberate" those smiles -wink). And they did just that. Hooray for Ton Kiang and their long lines on weekends! Don't forget to grab the mango pudding as soon as you see them. They sometimes run out of them and you will kick yourself for not grabbing them when you could've. ”

“ It's fashionable to bash a popular restaurant - don't believe the anti-hype. Try it for yourself! I've had a ton of dim sum over the years and Ton Kiang's is excellent. The ingredients are fresh and the flavors and textures are sublime. Shanghai dumplings are the perfect density, various shrimp dumplings are inventive and delicious. Portions can be a little small compared to some other places (making the price higher). If you are happy eating earlier, get there before 10am and enjoy some easy parking and no wait before your meal. ”

“ I am a native San Franciscan brought up on chinese food (I'm chinese-American) and I like Ton Kiang! I haven't waited in the long lines that others have experienced because I have only been there during weekday mornings, so maybe I have a different view of the experience. I think that the dumplings are well-crafted and carefully prepared. I like the smaller portions because you can enjoy more variety. I personally find the quality of the dumplings to be better and the quality of the food, in general, seems to be very good. The service isn't extraordinary, but I never go to chinese restaurants expecting exceptional service. Ton Kiang has satisfied me on each of my visits. Their mango pudding is yum! ”

“ Ton Kiang is certainly a dim sum legend in SF; I've brought friends who lived for years in Hong Kong and always they've been pleasantly surprised by the authenticity and quality of the food. The price is certainly higher than some other restaurants, but for that you get quality. The shrimp stuffed eggplant with black bean sauce is not to be missed and I have yet to find anyone who rivals their mango pudding. I wouldn't bother in the evenings when you order off the menu instead of true dim sum, the selection of dim sum at that point is limited and the other food is fine, but not exceptional. The wait can be daunting, but watch the traffic patterns and when you figure it out you can get in before the crowds AND get excellent dim sum. A personal favorite!! ”

“ I grew up in the Richmond District and I wish this restaurant was around when I was living there. Lucky for me that mom lives 4 blocks away and that this is one of her favorites. Consistently FRESH, QUALITY ingredients on all the dishes I've had. I must have eaten here at least 50X. We usually don't go for the dim sum but opt instead to order from the menu or off the menu. Faves include braised eggplant stuffed with shrimp, rock-cod sweet and sour, string beans in light sauce.
What I like best about this restaurant is that they do not hide their food in lots of salt, MSG and fat. ”

Bring some coffee and get your conversation out of the way during the wait so you can focus on eating when you get a table. The best part of dim sum is that you don't have to wait to order the food! By the way, if you want something in particular, don't be afraid to ask for it and they'll be sure to bring it out as soon as it's ready. ”
