“ Relaxed, chill, great ambiance, unpretentious with a cozy indoor and delightful outside area, this is a great spot! Best for hanging with friends or a group. Drink a beer -- or four -- and dine on quality Irish pub fare, including a meat pie, hearty stew, and mouthwatering steak fries. Also has salad and side of veggies for those watching cholesterol or calories. Not Fleur de Lys, but doesn't claim to be. Generally friendly wait staff. Can get a little on the loud side, but hey, that's part of the ambiance too. Reasonable prices. Enjoy! ”

“ The Irish Bank has been a long time favorite of mine, but sadly it is falling victim to it's own success.
New management, has come with a refurbished toilet, increased prices, and a constant turnover of staff. It used to be a cozy place where the folks knew your name, but is now just another overpriced drinking hole downtown.
I would leave my rating as neutral in a nod to the fond memories I've had there, but the new owner is brusque and unwelcoming. I'll be taking my business to Perry's a block away on Sutter St.
Sayonara. ”

“ I've been to this place for many a birthday party. Food is okay - I like the salad with grilled chicken. However, the wait staff can be totally rude. Fun on St. Patty's Day. ”

“ The curry fries are delicious. The fish and chips ok, not the best, but they pour a perfect Black and Tan. So often B&T's do not have enough Guinness but The Irish Bank has the perfect ratoio down.

“ Pub grub and lots of nutritious beer! Perfect place to catch the world cup, but check back in the meantime - I'm sure it won't be as busy. The food is really good - on the better side as pub grub goes... ”

“ Countless people have told me that the Irish Bank has the best fish and chips in town. Oh how wrong they are. I imagine those that find this fare tasty have had a pint or five in their gullet. Now mind you they do serve up a nice pint. I found the food portions to be small and considering I was one of three people in the restaurant waiting 20 minutes for my food was ridiculous. The batter while light tasted like flour and was not the delicate batter associated with a good fish fry. I will go to the Pig and Whistle where they actually have the best fish and chips in town. ”

“ With a menu ranging from fish and chips to ceasar salads and good ol'beer, the Irish Bank is the quintessential pub. It's not really my crowd, but it has a fun ambiance especially with friends. If you are in town with a crowd of friends and you are looking for the "pub" experience with good eats, the Irish Bank sure can't be beat! ”

“ I used to go here right when it opened as The Bank of Ireland, back when boys could honestly tell their mums they were putting their hard-earned money into the Bank of Ireland. The staff was always gloriously nice and if you went regularly they remembered. Good place to bring an older crowd or to hang out post-work with the yupsters. If they still have curry chips get them get them get them! The cook gave me the recipe...it's deliciously simple. ”

“ The location is great, the Fish and Chips is outstanding...the beer is always good. Great. Love it! Always bring visiting friends and family here if they want to do the Chinatown/Union Square thing. And the bathrooms are clean! ”

“ This is a great, low-priced restaurant downtown, perfect for meeting a group of friends for a beer or for dinner. The food is great, especially for the price and the ambience is cozy. Melissa, the waitress, is amazing and will remember your name and your poison. The chicken ceasar is a good value for only $6. I also like the burger or the cheese fries. Great value, pub food. ”

“ Everyone loves the Irish Bank, and I'm not exception. The bar is the draw, but the kitchen puts out solid pub fare. I've snacked on their curries and fish and chips, but I prefer the burger with fries as I'm downing my cold beers. Always a fun good time, I would go more if parking wasn't such a bch. ”

“ Consistently above-par yumminess! Chicken curry is one of my faves but definitely not for the spice phobic. Drinks are good are resonably priced. Pub-grub, cozy atmosphere, and stellar service - oh my! ”

“ Located in one of SF's famous alleyways in the heart of SF Financial District, this is a great place to dug in for a drink or grab a bite any time of the day. Some people love the fish and chips here, but it was a disappointment for me when I tried it. The things I like from the menu are the mountainous-high hamburger with fries to crave, hearty shepherd's pie, spicy thai chicken curry (incredibly tasty, and spicy even when it's at medium level). ”

“ UPDATE: 12/20/2007
I wrote my original review on the Irish Bank a few years ago and have been dozens of times since. Sadly I must report that the service at the Irish Bank has been in steady decline since Melissa, our regular waitress, left a few months ago. It's also become more apparent that the food has become lackluster and over priced as well.
Don't think I'll be back to the Bank anytime soon...."so long and thanks for all the fish."
2004
I had the “Award—Winning Fish and Chips” and it was easy to see why they took home the prize. It's a HUGE portion of perfectly done fish wrapped in crispy golden brown deliciousness. The fries were a size somewhere between a steak and string and top notch as well. The coleslaw was the only failing in this descendant repast. I wasn't down with the warm, thickly shredded, blandly spiced cabbage. I'm from NYC where the coleslaw is sweet, spicy, and cooled.
All and all top marks! ”

“ I have been here over 100 times, because every week we go here after toastmasters. They are very accommodating and often have a table waiting for us in the back for our party of 12 plus people. Our waitress is always the same, Melissa she is very friendly and its a amazing that she remembers nearly everybody's drinks, I am very fond of the fish & chips, banger sausages and there curry over rice. Remarkably low prices with attentive service. ”
