It's best to make reservations....it's crowded...it's busy....it's lively. The prime rib was delicious. The service was great. The owner was gracious. The ambience was nice....dim lighting....the decor reminded me of the Knights of the Roundtable. I would definitely go back again. ”

“
Wow, this is a serious steakhouse. ‘The Hopper,' as it is known to long-time fans, is old-school in decor (reminiscent of an old boy's club or smoking lounge from back in the day) but timeless in taste! The menu is traditional—prime rib with various sides including potatoes, creamed spinach and creamed corn. It's all about service here: the salad is mixed and served fresh at the table, the meat comes in a large silver vessel and sliced on the plate right in front of you and the server even dresses the baked potato for you! The creamed corn is far better than the creamed spinach I think (and I'm a spinach lover) and the cornbread was divine! Fantastic dinner followed by apple pie a la mode, though I would have preferred more ice cream and less whipped cream. And in case you didn't know, second helpings of the prime rib are complimentary! ”

“ Time is of the essence. This classy, reasonably priced, old school prime rib restaurant has the best egg tasting salad and bread pudding, which goes great with the City Cut. This is a magnificant place to go for any occasion. But remember, you and your guests will not be seated until your entire party arrives. ”

“ The pudding and cream of spinach is yummy! The prime rib is good but its not as good as what everyone saying it is. They raised the price a bit :( Parking is difficult if your looking for free parking on fri and sat nights. The atmosphere is great with romantic dim lighting and polite service.

I go here every year for my birthday. Last 15 years at least. The beet salad that they make at the table is awesome. I look forward to it. Always get the king henry cut the largest. All you order is the cut you want. The creamed spinach is great and the yorkshire pudding is excellent. I love this place. ”

“ A challenge for even the biggest carnivore, as you will be tempted to fill yourself with all the great sides. Hell, I'd come here just for the sides! Creamed spinach, fresh bread, and Yorkshire pudding. Only one of us was able to be rewarded with a second cut by finishing his first. I now understand why this is always the most recommended place for Prime Rib.

I've been eating here for many more years than I'd like to admit but when me or my guests feel like prime rib - THIS is the spot! I take friends and family here for special occasions - reservations are prompt and the staff have been consistently friendly. Once in awhile, the meat is not quite as tender but I'm still a loyal customer. ”

“ Tastey prime rib; ok baked potato , less ok is the salad, the standard salad is mediocre. The interior is boring, service is ok too. Kinda expensive for what you really get . Rather pay 50% more money for all around quality. But I didn't pay for my meal either.

“ House of Prime Rib is an excellent example of how simplicity and consistency equal restaurant success. I have dined here for the past 10 yrs about a total of 20 times, each a positive experience. Everything is tasty from the bread, to the salad, sides & of course the prime rib. They will give you exactly the level of doneness you want and are willing to replace your piece if it is not to your liking. The food and atmosphere is not for trend setters, vegetarians, or those who are intimidated by large portions. Highly recommend making reservations. The wait may or may not be long (30 min) even w/ a reservation, but well worth it. If you want to avoid the filling salad, you can order prime rib ala carte, which includes everything except for the salad. If there are two of us dining, we usually order a "cut" and an "a la carte" and split the salad (no extra charge). Much rather eat here than Harris's, Ruth Chris's, Izzy's, Albert's, & (maybe) Morton's steakhouses

“ Enormous meals come with salad, creamed spinach and tasty Yorkshire pudding. Then the prime rib cart -- to tease your palate. vegetarians should probably pass on by - come here hungry and enjoy. Decor could use some updating, but the 70's-ish room could be just right for an old-fashioned steakhouse. ”

“ My favorite prime rib place of all time. I always take out of towners here and they love it, even people from Texas!! A perfect example of a true San Francisco restaurant. The 49ers eat here every Xmas holiday. The prime rib is to die for, really. Get the King's cut I think and they give you some more free if you are up for it. Love the cream of spinach. Everything served to you at your table and they cut the meat right in front of you just the way you like it. I love this place and only if my wife wasn't a vegetarian, we would go more often. Great place to have a perfect cut of slow-cooked prime rib. Place is dark and romantic. A little loud but you can still be romantic. Not a fancy place, not like typical steak houses with fancy leather chairs and booths. Place has definite SF character. Parking is tough so expect to get valet if you are in a rush.

“ Wow. I'm a regular and I love this place, but had a horrible experience Saturday night. Way too much fat in the ribs and we were stuck in the back room where the cart can't get next to the tables. Disappointing when you've brought a table of 9 mostly first-timers and had hyped up the table-side cart. The server saved an otherwise terrible night. She was terrific ! Can't say the same for surley John at the check-in stand. He should be fired for `tude he spewed on guests waiting up to a half-hour for reservation seating, with equallly no seating/service in the bar area. Gus should never take a night off again for the sake of their reputation !!! ”

“ If you like Prime Rib, this is the place to go. Definitely go there with an empty stomach...every meal comes with Salad, the meat you choose....pick one of the prime rib cuts....cream of spinach, potatoes, and yorkshire pudding which is the worst part of the meal...looks like a pancake without any flavor.... overall I enjoy the prime rib very much and I was definitely full when I left!

“ Very disappointing! I have considered going here any number of times and I finally did on Easter Sunday with two friends. Pros: we got there on time and were seated within minutes even though the place was packed. Our waitress was right there and very nice even though she was incredibly busy. Now for the cons: In two words: The Meal! Salad was the best part even though it had too much dressing on it. The beef was tender but without flavor. The creamed spinach was tasteless and not too "creamed". I was asked if I "wanted everything" on my baked potato and she wasn't kidding! So much stuff I could hardly find the potato. Yorkshire pudding looked like a flat pancake. This is a good place for people who like quantity, however. Tons of food placed in front of us which also turns me off. So, afraid that they won't see me again. ”

“ if you want RIDICULOUSLY good meat, this the place to come.
That was really the only thing i loved about it. everything else - the way-too-hyper service, the heavy sides and over dressed salads, the incredibly long wait... wasn't great. This might be a place to like take you uncle or your grandparents or something but not exactly the kind of restaurant i'd want to go to with my friends.
the meat though - holy crap it was good.

“ I have been going to the House of Prime Rib for the last six years. In that time, I would have to estimate my total visits to well over 30. I have never had a poor experience at this resturant. The staff remembers your names, my daughter as well. The food is the best I have tasted for prime rib. I now live in So. California, but make a point upon every visit North, to make a stop here. You will not find a finer resturant in the Bay Area for Prime Rib, or a nice romantic dinner.
House cut, rare...mashed with extra gravy, no beats on the salad, spicy and mild creamed horseradish, Yorkshire pudding, and a good Kendall Jackson Cab. There isnt a finer dinner.

“ This is a great place for prime rib (duh!) You can see the chef cutting the meat for you, taking from a different part of the roast depending on how cooked you want your meat. You get so many extras, such as salad, bread, yorkshire pudding, potatoes, creamed spinach. I usually get pretty full from all that other stuff, so don't fill up on too much salad! Be sure to make reservations, so you don't have to wait too long. ”

“ Great place for a carnivore. Their prime rib is truly delicious and they cook it perfectly. I loved their mashed potatoes and their house salad. I was not a fan of their creamed spinach, which I usually love at restaurants. I could barely finish half of my city cut, which is the smallest. It is a lot of food and I think worth the money. The service is great and the restaurant has a great old school feel to it. If you love Prime Rib you must try this place. ”

“ The best prime rib I've ever had, the best service I've EVER had, and the most food for the money I've ever gotten. I would recommend this to anyone for any occasion. I go here with my fiance for every occasion, visitors, anniversary, valentines day, got free time, anything we love it so much. Don't order the King Henry cut get the City Cut I believe it was, because if you finish it you get another slice of beef, and they fill you up with bread, awsome HUGE salad, Potato, corn bread, it keeps going. I recommend it for parties, celebrations, anniversaries, etc, anything, go. ”

“ Parking is a hassle and you still have to wait 30 minutes to 1hr WITH reservations... that being said it still gets a positive from me because the service is truly exceptional and the prime rib is simply delicious. Last time I had to wait an hour when I already had reservations my party of 8 received 2 bottles of wine on the house. We didn't even have to ask.. they just offered. I have to say we didn't even know that much time had past because we were at the bar keeping busy. And if you're still not full after all that food you can ask for a second slice of rib at no cost!! Enough said. ”

“ Angioplasty Central, carnivore's carpe diem delight at the House of Prime Rib, San Francisco's extravagantly old-fashioned temple to roast beef which deserves landmark status. Gargantuan mountainous jumbo portions of mouth-meltingly delicious roast beef served tableside, including second portions upon request, augmented by such substantial sides as spectacular garlic mashed potatoes with horseradish, Yorkshire pudding, marvelous creamed spinach and a very special hand-twirled and spun archetypal chilled salad with red beets and hard-boiled eggs to fill your every nook and cranny. Extensive and reasonable wine list including hidden treasures and sumptuous desserts like the fabulous english Trifle will have you leaving the joint feeling like the King of the Jungle still stuffed three days later. Warm reception and manic ambience, a delightful time machine's ride to times past. Unlike any other place in the City and far superior to the place down the block. ”

“ Came here sooo many times already but the first time was the best!! When I first went there, I didn't know how much food you actually get.. Love their salad especially the beets!! Sourdough bread.. delicious...yorkshire pudding..delicious..the prime rib steak was so gigantic I tried to finish it but couldn't... and sometimes the kitchen staff brings out a basket and passes out their fresh baked corn bread and those were extremely yummy!!!!! We also ordered one of their cheesecake for chocolate cheesecake and it was so damn good I just couldn't leave without finishing it.. so i did and I couldn't even get up and walk anymore.. felt like my stomach was about to EXPLODE!! but worth it.. “ NASTY!! The McDonalds of roast beef. This restaurant is extremely generic. If you are a bland meat and potatoes person, then this is for you. If you like clean, quality food, don't go here. Meat was not Prime quality. Creamed spinach was rubbery. Salad was boring but big. The potato was ok. Service was TERRIBLE! Water was spilled on me and the waiter spilled au jus on my husband. He was rude when I asked if there was cheese in the salad. It is also very loud in there. The only redeeming quality was a reasonably priced wine list. Save yourself trouble....don't go here for prime rib. Been to Outback for better meat. ”

“ Here's the deal: if you're gonna eat here for dinner, you must starve yourself all day. That way you can fully enjoy the stuffed sausage feeling you're gonna have when you leave. It's A LOTTA FOOD. I love this place. It's very classy, old San Francisco style. The servers are really nice and even if you're not super into prime rib (which i don't think i really am) it's worth it for the sides- the creamed spinach rules, the salad is the bomb and they give you a friggin' hot loaf of bread! Can you ask for more? I don't think so. ”

“ One of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco. It has an elegant and romantic atmosphere perfect for celebrations or dates. The food is wonderful and definitely priced perfectly. The only vice that I have about this place is that they charge $3 for a small glass of soda with no refills. They can afford to give customers a free second helping of meat, but can't afford to give a free refill of soda? Other than that, I would highly recommend this place and make sure to make reservations! ”

“ My favorite meat place and I've never had a bad prime rib experience here. Very old school atmosphere with the meat cart making the rounds when your entree is served. Don't know if this is relevent, but I use HOPR as a benchmark for all other steak places I go to: "this steakhouse isn't as good as HOPR....", "this is better than HOPR", etc....
Tasty side dishes too. My favorites are the creamed spinanch and the pudding of course. ”

“ The House of Prime Rib is my favorite spot to satify my red meat cravings. Gotta go at least once a month. The King Henry cut is the only way to go, and the creamed spinich and yorkshire pudding is a hit. Even the spinning salad is a winner. I've opened up some of my most memorable bottles from 1990 Caymus Special Selection cabs, 1986 Lynch Bordeax, and 1989 and 1990 Ch. Lafite...but their wine list is extremely fair compared to Mortons. I think they have Opus One for $150, a splurge but VERY reasonable. If, after eating yourself to a food coma you just happen to be slightly hungry, you can ask your server for another serving...and they will set up a another small plate of prime rib, creamed spinich, and mashed potatoes for you for free. I've seen many a 49er or Raider Lineman hunkering down for a meal so you know you're in good company. ”

“ I don't think the meat here is the absolute best out there, but you come here for the whole experience. This place is just so comfortable. Feels old-san francisco-elegant. The salad is so sweet, it's yummy in a very guilty pleasure sort of way. I love to request the end piece of the prime rib. Definitely the most flavorful part. Overall a fun place to take the family from out of town or any time you need to get your meat on and don't want to be too compicated about it. ”

“ This place is a San Francisco institution. Tender beef, creamy mashed potatos, perfectly salted creamed spinach, and the best part of the meal.. the hand tossed salad. Don't forget to bring home a bottle of their salad dressing (tell your waiter and they will bring you a bottle with the check). Just toss with chopped hard boiled eggs, beets, and cracked pepper... nummy! ps. if you are a vegetarian don't go but I hear that their salmon is quite divine. My god mother doesn't eat red meat but its one of her favorite places, she simply loves the salad and salmon. Great for Atkins dieters.. you can have an extra piece of prime rib.. no charge just ask. ”

“ This is one of the restaurants that I can remember been there since I grew up in the city. (trolley cars on Geary) It is a San Francisco landmark and a must go! There used to be Grissons Steak house on the same block (if you remember). If you are a prime rib fan and don't want to make the pilgrimage to Lawry’s in LA then this is equal experience!
OK, if a restaurant really uses PRIME beef then, it's all going to taste pretty much the same. Except for the crust of the roast. Here they season it with salt & pepper and a couple of herbs and leave it in the oven for 3 hours. The experience here is that they wheel the dinner to you in a metal pod that looks like it should be from the movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the cutting and exhibition of the meat is what this dining experience here is really all about. Balance of tender prime beef with delicious creamed spinach will bring back the good old days! The only thing missing is Emperor Norton!
