“ The area is a little seedy, but if you go with a big group, it's not that bad. I've never had a bad dish there. The naan ($1) is huge, so one is enough for two people (you can always order more later if you have a big appetite.) Any of the Tandoori BBQ items are recommended, especially the Tandoori pork chop ($10.95), Murgha Tikka Lahori - chicken leg ($3.50) or the Seekh Kabab Mughlai - ground beef ($2). The spices are so flavorful, these meats don't need any kind of dipping sauce. We usually get a curry so we can dip the naan. The Chicken Tikka Masala ($6.95) is a good bet if you're in the mood for something spicy. Excellent food, very inexpensive. We never pay more than $7 each for a group of 3 or more.

“ awesome chicken curry and naan! the food is cheap and you order off a stained menu at the counter. since this place is such a dive, i've always wondered why the ask you to pay at the end of your meal instead of at the beginning.

“ Absolutely terrifying. When we arrived, the place was packed and we couldn't even get in the door. While we were standing on the sidewalk deciding what to do, a man poked his head out of a side door and asked if we were waiting for Shalimar. We said yes and he motioned us into a sort of side alley. This in turn led to an unused and filthy apartment in a public housing project which the restaurant apparently uses as an overflow room. Still wondering if we were going to be cracked over the head, we sat on a torn sofa, took the menus we were handed, and ordered a few dishes. The waiter left us alone with another bewildered threesome and a TV tuned to an indian station. At this point, a spirited debate ensued about whether we should lock the door. Finally, the waiter returned with the food, which we ate off paper plates. It was plentiful, delicious, and cheap. Then we hightailed it out of there.

“ My Paki boyfriend LOVES this place - it's about the only indian food he'll eat in town, so I guess that says it all. I've been once, and I liked it very much, though it is extremely spicy for us "amateurs" :) My BF recommends the Tandoori chicken and chicken meatballs, though he says their naan isn't so great. It's BYOB so don't forget to bring something to wash it down. The decor is non-existent - a bit of a dump, though at least the prices match - a FEAST for two for under $20. ”

“ The Saag Gohst (lamb w/spinch) was mild in flavor. The dahl was good, even though I"m not a big dalh/ lentil eater, the veggie dish was the best. Always a good sign when 95% of the diners were of South asian decent. Unpretentious eatery that can get very busy. And don't forget to try the mango lassi. They also have a milky tea that you serve yourself. ”

“ Decor is seedy and rundown. Food is to-die-for. Authentic, smoky, spicy. And cheap as can be. Go with a crowd and order as many dishes as the table will hold, it still won't run you over $40 I bet. And this isn't a case of eating mediocre food because it's cheap. I actually daydream about the Sikh Kebab. So good. ”

“ You want the one on Jones St. Bit seedy seeming, but the food is excellent. The saag gohst (lamb/spinach) is my favorite, and the garlic naan is excellent. If you're lucky, they'll sit you in the private room (the office) in back! ”
