“

“
My husband and I have been going to Zarzuela's since they opened and have ALWAYS found it to have exceptional service, mouth watering food, good wine, in a comfortable, cozy location. Last week we went there with our son and thoroughly enjoyed the salpicon (seafood salad), so fresh and perfectly done, the croquetas melting in our mouth, and the scallops so tender and fresh. This is a place that we go to relax and share with our closest friends and family. I highly recommend that you try this restaurant and then go back again and again to try all of the dishes. ”

“ Would have been a better experience if the chef had been one of those curmudgeons who makes you eat the various small plates in just the right order, instead of leaving you to your own devices. Certain tastes were improved considerably by the tastes that immediately preceded them. Everything was excellent, or maybe better than that. Amazing stuffed mushrooms, very nice olives and olive oil for dipping bread. Great boiled mussels, seafood salad, sauteed peppers in oil, anchovies. My favorite was thin slices of poached octopus on sliced potatoes, sprinkled with pimenton. Bread pudding is tasty, staff very happy and friendly. Noisy, four bells; walk from wherever you live, no parking here. ”

“
This was a great reprieve after a day of shopping in Union Square with friends. We hopped in a cab to get to the restaurant, didn't have to wait at all for our party of three on a early Saturday evening (6pm or so), and had a delightful meal, including the escargot tapas plate -- absolutely delicious for someone who had never had escargot before; I was quite impressed.
Thumbs up experience all-around (but I would never consider trying to park in the neighborhood when going to dinner here). ”

“
WHY did I wait so long to try this place?? Go during the week if you can - easier to get in. Excellent service - very friendly and helpful. We had strictly tapas - several of the specials, like calamari in it's own ink - stellar! Everything we tried was delicious. And sangria for $4.95?? We're going to become regulars. ”

“ DANGER: FOOD POISONING/PARASITES. One disastrous dinner ruins a favorite restaurant forever: After several sparkling meals, a recent Thursday evening where nothing seemed up to snuff: fried calamari, before always fresh and light presented as chewy, heavy, disgusting and funky, pork cutlet, always scintillating, hardly worth finishing, but the final coup de grace, tainted shellfish with parasites causing a severe bout of food poisoning from Zarzuela's fish stew resulting in severe distress and lasting over month. Unfortunately, it would now never be worth risking a return to Zarzuela. What a pity. Absolutely inexcusable that a restaurant of this caliber would serve poorly cooked, infected shellfish resulting in severe food poisoning. Vibrio is a parasite which attacked after Katrina, but it was served right here in San Francisco in Zarzuela's fish stew. Disastrous and disgraceful. ”

“ I was introduced to you, Zarzuela, for the first time back in 1999. Since then, yes, I'll admit that I've been to other restaurants.
But please don't call me unloyal, Zarzuela. Although I was fairly happy with you back then, you see there *are* other restaurants out there. I returned with fond memories of passing plates of tapas to friends, laughing, soft, glowing light...but I had never tried the paella...until now. Call me a risk taker, call me foolish... but the other reviewers who say it is bland are right. Sort of. If a diner doesn't like salty dishes, I think they'd be ok. I would describe the flavor more as 'earthy' with the subtle hint of saffron. I will come back again & again to sample your small plates (the escargot & mushrooms are great) & your tasty sangria, Zarzuela, and I may...just MAY even give the paella another chance.

“ Not the best tapas in SF. Bocadillos in North Beach has much better food. I like russian Hill. I don't like trying to find parking here. We came with a family party of 8. We had reservations for a Saturday afternoon. We got a big central table. This was a party occasion. The food was purely incidental. Good thing, as it is not very good. We tried all the various traditional spanish bar food selections. None compared favorably to any dishes that I've had in the most modest neighborhood bars in Spain. Chris Isaak and his large family were at the next table. That made all my 20's-something year old neices and nephews coo with curiosity and delight. We went across the street to the original Swensen's Ice cream for dessert. ”

“ The tapas are so good here, especially the chorizo in wine sauce. Very friendly service, and they bring free marinated olives to start the meal. An excellent neighborhood restaurant. ”

“ Open room, absolutely great chow. Bring the b&t's up on a cable car. They will think you are the coolest, most urbane host ever after suggesting this over hooters at the wharf. ”

“ I love this place. Prepare to wait for a table though...i don't think they take reservations. The food is excellent- i don't think i've ever been disappointed. Their sangria rules and while this place isn't nearly as hip as Cha Cha Cha, the food's better. There. I said it. ”

“ Parking is heinous! Every small plate I have had has been great. Unlike the others, I can't say the same for the paella. Maybe it was an off night. Something about their jamon serrano is a cut above others I have had in the city. The atmosphere is fun. Take a cab. It's great! ”

“ Well, this place is certainly bustling with excitement. But I'm not sure why. The tiny plates left me leaving unsatisfied. Not to mention their clever little "second dining room" - basically the foyer of the restrooms and entry to the kitchen - Luckily, the company was stimulating enough to take my mind off of that. The ham & cheese croquettes were tasty as was the cold grilled peppers, but overall the dining experience was simply average. ”

“ delightful and quaint, this place is a winner, especially for a romantic dinner. Very tasty food. Excellent Paella. Only downsides: a bit loud and no reserv's. Oh, and best to walk, bus, or cab it here. ”

“ The best way to communicate with your dinner partner is before dinner, don't come here for a quiet romantic dinner. This place has the sound level of a spanish soccer game, the food is varied, the service are just right but figure a dinner for 4 good eaters is going to run you over 200 bucks not including the wine. Try the calamari, it is one of the best in the city. The lamb is worth two orders, you eat the chops like popsicles...... ”

“ The food here is pretty good, but they take the definition of the word "tapas" (little dishes) seriously. I took my parents, who consider quantity quality, and when a plate came to the table with 8 olives, they were kind of shocked. ”
