“
My husband and I agreed that this is the best breakfast we've ever had. Started with the homemade, warm strawberry crumble with lemon whipped cream and moved onto a sweet potato, gruyere, carmelized onion tart and a pulled pork scramble. Everything was incredible, fresh and creative. Recommend getting there right when they open to avoid waiting in line. ”

“ was here for breakfast this morning. they had some pretty interesting combo's. my gf got the trout, cream cheese, capers, tomatoes and i forget what else scramble, and i got the rosemary lamb sausage, garlic, goat cheese, tomato, and i forget what else scramble. they were both fantastic. they came with roasted potatoes and buttermilk dill bread. the waitstaff was trying to go as fast as they could, but they had a hard time keeping up. it was still a fabulous breakfast. i'll go back. ”

“
Every few weeks I get a craving for a jumbo sized very American breakfast. Well, Dottie's hits the spot every time. Perfectly cooked eggs, a mountain of fried potatoes and fresh fruit on every plate makes this the favorite of so many of the movie biz crews. On several occasions I have spotted celebs trying to look like one of the locals in hoodies and shades. Yes, there is often a long line and the nabe is not the cheeriest, but it is well worth the inconvenience of a trip to the tenderloin, just to taste some of the wonderful fresh baked muffins and breads. If you like french toast, you haven't lived 'til you try some at Dottie's made with their freshly baked bread!! Kudos to Sala the baker and Kurt the owner who mans the grill! ”

Aside from having to wait in line for half an hour, it was nice to just finally have a seat. Once the food was served up, I was definitely happy and very full afterwards. It's not a bad place to start off the day with. ”

“ The time I finally ate here I made sure to arrive right when they opened, when there was already a wait! It was well worth it. Hearty, healthy but decadent eggs and the best pancakes I've had in the bay area. The small diner setting is perfect for this kind of food. Highly recommend it!

“ If you don't want to wait, carry your behind down here when they open. Bring the newspaper and a friend so that you won't notice how long you are waiting. My friend, the ultimate foodie who now works for Bon Appetite, had mentioned this place for years. Don't come here if your blood sugar is low and the line is half way down the block. The grilled cornbread alone is worth the wait. Get the Blueberry cornmeal pancakes or one of the specials on the board. The home fries have a nice creamy texture since they use my favorite, red potatoes. A good variety of fresh baked goods are available. I can't believe it took me so long to find out about this place. We need more inventive breakfast places in this city so that we don't have to wait so long.

“ The line around the block dodging crack fiends is worth it, and if you are meeting someone gives you a chance to catch up as well as comiserate with the strangers who are also braving the (almost) unbearable wait. Go AFTER the rush, meaning get breakfast for lunch. Suggestions: jalapeno corn bread and the black bean cakes.
I met the owner at a party once and he's a really nice guy...he is behind the stove at all times.

“ You've all convinced me. I'm officially a fan of Dottie's. We found the line tolerable at 2:15 on a Saturday afternoon, skipping the hip brunch rush for a lazy, extra-late breakfast. I had a hugely full plate: sweet potato, caramelized red onions and gruyere tart (more like a wedge of pie) with two eggs, two biscuits, and a heaping bowl of mostly fresh fruit: $8.95. I left behind half an egg, one biscuit, and much of the fruit. The bottomless pit Boyfriend couldn't knock off his plate either: two eggs, deliciously fat slabs of bacon, homefries, and FOUR monster slices of sinful french toast: $10.95. We sat at the counter and ogled the grill man, who poured extra goop on top of the already cooking Fr. toast: the secret to a delectable breakfast. ? Actually, there's a second bit to the Fr. toast trick: grill man also poured a few tablespoons of what appears to be cinnamon sugar on the toasts too, while it's still cooking. I had a great time. Reminded me of old school diners ”

“ There was an extremely long line out the door when I went. The place is small but the food portion is just the opposite, the portion is huge! Great tasty whole wheat cinnamon pancakes and great and my friend ordered the "open road" and of course I ate some of her food and it was again great. The meal was huge and we had lots of leftovers. Worth the wait and if you are a breakfast kinda person, you gotta come here and give it a try. ”

“ Very busy place. It is a small dining room with several tables and a counter. Their whole wheat pancake was delicious it has a cinnamon and buttermilk taste. The fritatta was huge and comes with toast and potato. It was a little expensive but it's good. The wait is really long so be prepared to wait! ”

“ Be late for work and go on a weekday. Sit at the counter and watch'em go. The toast and all the breads are great and it's one of the few places in the city that actually know how to cook over-medium eggs-not soggy-not burnt. I really like this place, but I go during the week to avoid the long wait. ”

“ I don't have a real deep experience here since I always get the blueberry cornmeal pancakes. They are always good and real maple syrup really add a nice touch. The coffee is always good here. If you choose from the specials on the chalk board you won't go wrong. They bake a lot of goodies like scones and sweet rolls that are also excellent. The servers are really good souls and they put up with a lot i'm sure since this place has become a touristy spot. I guess I consider myself a tourist since I don't live in SF but I certainly am one to put myself in other's shoes and I like the people that work at Dotties. ”

“ Yes...the line absolutely SUCKS and the neighborhood does not make it an enjoyable wait. However, the food is HUGE and deliCIOUS! The baked goods are to die for. The danger here is that everyone at the table will want to start with one baked good and then get breakfast with it. I can't tell you how many times this has caused the table to never finish all of the food. There is just sooooooo much. I know that when my mother comes into town now, she juts nibbles on everyone else's plates. I have a hard time suggesting this one as I don't want to stand in a longer line, but it good enough to want to share. Excellent. ”

“ As someone who lives in the Loin - we're sick of the line on weekends - take out is the way to go. Food is amazing, service is always great - just be prepared to wait online with tourists from the Hilton. Lunches there are great too - grilled cheese with gruyere on homemade bread, carmelized onions - how can you go wrong - def add bacon! ”

“ The world's best breakfast prepared by Dottie's True Blue Cafe's Chef/Owner Kurt and his extremely sexy flying-machine stove. There is a tremendous air of erotic sensuality when you're perched at the counter at Dottie's watching Kurt prepare his magnificent breakfasts. It's an exhilarating visceral experience nearly without parallel in the City and it's then you realize it's not an accident that there's always a line out the door down the street. Kurt's highly disciplined and organized joie de vivre translates itself directly to every spectacular breakfast he creates, from his stupendous french toast, the best I've ever had, made from homemade loaves and slathered with a ton of butter, heaped with a mountain of sublime strawberries, or his stupendous, gigantic pancakes, even his homefries aux herbes fines are spectacular. Kurt's Dottie Café is just a dazzling San Francisco experience! ”

“ I absolutely love breakfast, so I was excited about trying Dottie's for the first time. I braved the 45 minute wait in line with my roommate and dreamed of the delicious meal I was about to have. Then it happened! I was disappointed. The food was okay but nothing to wait 45 minutes in line for. The omelet was good, but nothing extraordinary. The pancake was flat and doughy; a huge disappointment, and the potatoes tasted oily. My roommate likewise wasn't overly impressed with his food. The grilled cornbread which I substituted for the regular bread was fine, but they charged me 50 cents extra for the jalapeno jelly that comes with it if you order it on your own. I'm still boggled by what the big draw is. ”

“ Good food, cute atmosphere. Nothing mind-blowing but it definitely fits the bill for a filling breakfast. Got there at 7:20 and had 10 or so people in line for the 7:30 opening on a Saturday. I had the blueberry cornmeal pancakes which were nice and light. Three huge pancakes so I had leftovers for a couple more b'fasts. Nice touch with the real maple syrup. ”

“ Got there early on a weekday morning. Had a seat at the counter and what a great chance that was. Watched the cook make all of the meals with great precision. It was a sight to behold. Had a huge omelet put in front of me that was sooo yummy. A great eye opener, which I needed since I was up earlier than planned. When I was done, I left full and the line was down the street. Breakfast in SF. This is a must stop. ”

“ Friday morning, 8:00 there was already a bit of a wait, not too bad. The food was very good. Blueberry cornmeal pancakes, andouille sausage, two eggs, potatoes. Many specials all sounded good. At 9:00, when we left, the line was 25 people deep. Also, this is not your Denny's $2.99 Grand Slam. They do accept credit/debit cards. ”

“ If you are on the brink of starvation, you shouldn't go to Dotties cuz you'll seriously wait in line for about 12 hours. However, if you're willing to wait, this is simply the best breakfast you'll ever eat. No lie. The french toast is phenomenal. The cornbread and jalapeno jelly is delish. Make sure you check out the specials board...the sweet potatoe gruyere galette is mighty tasty. The folks who work there are cool too. ”

“ You can actually do a lot with breakfast and Dottie's does it. Yes, I only end up going here two are three times a year, but I do drive by at least twice a month hoping the line won't be too long. When I do brave the line, I remember why. The food is cooked with love and you can taste it. The eggs are done just right, great sausage, but it's the pancakes that come with the "open road" that make my mouth water as I write this. All the baked goods are top notch. Also love the servers there. Only food related complaint since I stopped drinking coffee? Crappy tea selection. Overall, the best breakfast in the city. ”

“ I really think that lemming-style group think is at hand when it comes to Dottie's. The food is just okay (how much can you really do to breakfast people? c'mon here!) but there is a ridiculous line. I think people have to justify the food being spectacular after waiting 40 minutes to get in. Nothing special! ”

“ This Tenderloin neighborhood establishment used to be one of SF's best kept secrets, but not any more. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day and this place makes it just that much better. I would say my favorite meal here is the blueberry cornmeal pancakes, but many of the egg dishes are just as tasty. Dottie's bakes its own scones, pastries, breads and muffins, and even makes it's own sauces & jellies as well. ”

“ I agree with everyone who gives positive reviews that the breakfast is the best in town and the staff is beyond-the-call-of-duty-friendly, but the wait kills me, so I have to give it a neutral rating. Unless I'm really REALLY craving their muffins or coffee cake, I'd much rather save myself a couple hours and eat elsewhere. ”

“ I finally got to try Dotties! The pancakes are very good! There is a cinnamon taste to it and the color is brownish. The maple syrup is awesome! It was so good, I went back again and got the cook to order omelet. The eggs were light and fluffy and not over cooked. If you don't mind a little wait on the weekends, go try it! The service is friendly too. You'll smell like fried potato's when you leave. ”
