“
Chow, in my opinion, is an overrated restaurant with so-so food and an even less so-so waitstaff. I live in the neighborhood and have dined and ordered-out from there more times than I care to admit. The last two times I've sat down, I thought the servers were really inattentive—denying the order was taken wrong when the wrong dish came out (instead of insisting the customer's always right), always having to ask for water refills, and forgetting to bring the proper condiments and utensils for the meals. The food is American fare and the flavors are generally bland from the burgers to the spaghetti and meatballs to the spinach salad. I think it's probably popular because it's a casual place to dine-out without paying a fortune, but there are too many great, affordable restaurants in this city to waste your money here. ”

“
I dream of the ginger cake. Mmmm. Fish of the week. Yummy. Whenever I was stuck late at work, I used to call ahead and order the 1/2 chicken and mashed potatoes. Nothing makes you feel better about getting home late than a glass of wine and some comfort food. Plus I love the servers here so much. Nicest in the whole city - no joke. Extra bonus - if there is a wait, you can go next door to the Pilsner Inn and grab a beer and they will come get you. Not for the homophobic - but what the hell are they doing in the castro anyway. Or San Francisco. ”

“ I can't say enough good things about this place. The pizza is fabulous, so is the eggplant parmagiana, the friday sandwich special (fish), the hamburger on baguette, and most of all the fusilli. it's off the hook! great beer selection, the house red isn't bad, and best of all: THE GINGER CAKE! get it, you won't be disappointed. ”

“ Sitting up front near the street side windows is pleasant as is the food. Pleasant, but nothing spectacular. My flank steak was done medium rare as requested and the arugala, red onion and tomato salad and fries were good accompaniments. My companion's small Caesar salad for $5.50 was a rip off though-there must have been all of 25 cents worth of romaine lettuce in it. Great chocolate cake dessert-it was very rich and thus good for sharing. This is a good place to go with kids as there are lots of menu choices that would appeal to them and you can get most entrees in a smaller sized serving.

“ Very relaxed environment-- parents and kids with crayons eating alongside a group of UC kids with beers. Great food, helpful/experienced staff. They even let my party go to the bar next door while waiting for a table, and they came to get us when they were ready-- not something you see often enough!

“ Park Chow, although crawling with tots and baby-toters, is much better in food, service and atmosphere. But this Chow is ok for what your choices are on this street. The sandwiches are by far the best of the choices they give you on the menu. If you're not in the mood for a burrito the size of your head, then this may do.

“ Similar to "Home" which is nearby but more ecclectic and not as loud.
I liked the salad I had with spinach and candies pecans I believe.
Had a fresh fish dish....some type of Tuna. These guys are reasonable in price..have great raspberry lemonade and nice deserts. Service is perhaps a bit spotty but i'm not a really demanding person with regard to that when an effort is clearly being made and they are busy. We go to golden gate park a lot and may give the one in that area a try. I'd recommend this place for comfort food with a bit more of a creative twist.

“ Sometimes you just really want to like a place before you go. I'll admit it; I really wanted to like Chow when I walked in. From the hand painted lettering on the window that reminded me of the lettering on an old coke bottle, to the window nooks that make everyone waiting to get in envious, I just really wanted to like the place. But in the end, Chow just basically didn't shine for me. The menu was limited for brunch and what was available was more of a scrambled (literally –egg scrambles--) hodgepodge of flavors, than a focused offering of house specials. On top of that, the service (which started out nice) was slow with the coffee refills (despite a full gaggle of waiters) and turned strangely prickly when dealing with an ordering error. At the end of the day, there are just too many places in San Francisco to go for me to give Chow another shot. ”

“ Barbara & I have eaten here 3 times. She loves the food & ambience, I'm not as thrilled. We've had a decent lunch sitting in the front window, a mixed quality dinner by the kitchen and a totally mediocre dinner on the back patio. I'll give a passing grade to the hamburger and fries, and I usually do not like french fries. My last dinner of spaghetti and meatballs was really quite terrible. Large portion, but gloppy with meat sauce flavors that recalled meal memories of roadtrip diners outside Oklahoma. Yes, the wait staff are really amiable. They pay attention to empty water & beverage glasses. I root for Chow 'cause it's earnest, family friendly, cheap enough, sometimes adventurous with ingredient combos and flavors. But good intentions do not overshadow my experience that 2 meals out of 3 did not make me happy. Therefore I award a neutral rating which pains me a little. I hope that the kitchen focuses and improves but I probably will never return to find out. ”

“ first time i was there the place was fantastic. good homestyle comfort food. the second time, they had changed the menu to more eclectic food. it wasn't as good 2nd time around. i was a bit dissappointed. but the quality was good, i just wasn't a fan of the flavors that time. i seemed to be in the minority of the group though. take what you will from that. ”

“ Great stuff; They have a great menu and have really good daily specials. I love the Tuesday's open meatloaf sandwich with salad. Really great, their burger royal is awesome, as is their spinach salad. But what ever you have you MUST leave room for the Ginger cake with pumpkin ice-cream. ”

“ Everytime I go to Chow, I have the spaghetti and meatballs - so does my girlfriend. I don't know why, it's not that they are out of the world spectacular, but when we crave it - Chow is where we go. I've seen people wait a long time to get a seat, but I usually don't have to wait long. The outdoor, covered patio area is nice. Friendly staff. ”

“ Very comfortable, very casual and very loud. I’m impressed by the consistently good service. The grill meats are good, but the best thing on the menu is the Cobb salad with a lovely tarragon dressing. And if you’re lucky enough to hit a day when they’re serving the chocolate pie, you’d have to be self-loathing to pass it up. ”

“ A comfortable sort of place, with a comfortable sort of menu. The spaghetti and meat balls was nothing to write home about, but certainly wasn't the horribly bland sort of stuff you occasionally find. My dining companion said the fish of the day was good, but it's notably more expensive than the regular menu items. Their buffalo wings were quite tasty. ”

“ I have heard nothing but good word of mouth on this place which is why I experienced slight disappointment there the other night. It was fairly early on a Tuesday and we got a table promptly. I wanted comfort food and got the shortribs, my companion got the tuna special. Even though I ordered the "large" sized plate of ribs, it was just barely enough for dinner. But it was, I admit, very tasty. My companion, on the other hand, was not thrilled with his tuna, saying it didn't have as much flavor as he expected. We both thought the accompanying garlic mashed potatoes were tasty but dry. We had to ask for butter to go with the excellent bread (and to moisten the potatoes). Finally, I have to say that the decibel level for me was nearly unbearable. Next time, if there is one, I'll wear ear plugs. ”

“ Chow = great comfort food. Nothing is outstanding, but everything is really good. Salads, burgers, pastas, roasted meats, breakfast, you can't really miss. And they use really fresh ingredients. My recent visit for lunch I had a BLT w/avo and a lemonade, which doesn't sound grand, but the bacon was Niman Ranch and very thick, the lemonade was homemade and tinged with mint, so they pay attention to their details here. We had a great warm choco cake for dessert as well... ”

“ Everyone always raves about this place so maybe my expectations were too high. The service is definitely very friendly, but I found the food pretty average. I had a good salad, but my main entree, eggplant parmesan, was mediocre. It is reasonably priced, but I think you can do better in this neighborhood. ”

“ Chow is an awesome value for dining. The menu has a wide selection to choose from. The salads are solid, all the sandwiches and noodle dishes are good, and the ginger cake with pumpkin ice cream is a winner. I've craved that cake enough to order it from Waiters on Wheels. Love their location near Golden Gate Park as well. ”

“ Ohhh, I feel so out of line on this one. I don't know what it is, but I can never find anything that I really want on the menu. I gernerally leave feeling somewhat unsatisfied. The last time I was there I got the spaghetti and meatballs. The meatballs were so bland, they made me sad. I have been here many times with many friends that love it. I can't deny that the price is right. I wish I could love it too, but I just don't. UPDATE: I do love it now. I finally had a great meal here. The flank steak fritte is a great deal and the chocolate cream pie was the one have looking for forever! ”

“ Main dishes and pizzas are reliably good. I've been disappointed with the noodle dishes, and salads are on the small side. Service can sometimes be absent minded, but its friendly, and this is a casual, busy place, so I've never been bothered. Pretty good wine and beer list that matches the food and prices well. ”

“ When I must eat and ‘be’, Chow delivers. With a familiar and well-rounded wine list, I can enjoy a 375ltr of Sauvignon Blanc to accompany a crisp spinach salad. Chow’s spinach salad is simply the best! - But what I find even better is that in a city that encompasses such a diverse pool of genes, Chow capitalizes on individuality, style and positive self-esteem. An environment where the Manager cannot be picked out of the group for they blend in with the rest of the team as every employee seems to be permitted in wearing ‘street' attire, bringing in their own eclectic music c.d.’s, and showing off their sexy tatt's and piercings. Ultimately Chow nourishes a high-self of esteem. And it’s a great place when you just want good food, good tunes, smiles and room to just ‘be’. ”

“ We were warmly greeted with just a foot in the door, the service is so friendly it gave me a warm fuzzy feeling inside. I had the cezar salad and added the herb prawns, very basic cezar salad and the prawns were tasty however not very prawn like, they were little micro prawns, not what I was expecting. Seems like a good place for groups as they have a diverse menu and prices that fit anyones budget. ”
