“ Nice little place, kinda hidden from the rest of union square. The plate of froi gras was my favorite. The crab cakes were very nice, crispy, creative. Their fish was alright, nothing outstanding. Service was average. Overall, not a bad choice if you have plans for ACT before or after.

“ I was in town for a convention in Moscone. This place is a 7-minute walk from Parc 55 hotel which was where I stayed. Inside the restaurant, the lighting is a bit too dark for my taste. It was crowded for a Friday night and since I did not have reservation I sat at the bar. For a light dinner, the foie gras was very good, the prawns a la plancha on a bed of risotto was delicious also. I had 2 glasses of Perrier jouet and a glass of Bordeaux red. The bill comes out to be $60 or so (the bartender went easy on me, shhhh!). Overall very attentive service. Definitely will come back. Gave it a 9.5/10. ”

“ Cortez, located inside a hotel, has a modern but fun interior. The sculpture-style light fixtures in primary colors reminded me of Tinker Toys. For $77, my theater date and I had two drinks each (she wine, me Chimay white) and three small plates to share. Great attention is paid to detail at Cortez, so I enjoyed munching on a little complimentary bar bowl of popcorn that tasted of special salt or was it olive oil instead of butter (?). Big tuna sliced thin with pickled watermelon rind was sublime, with just a background hint of wasabi in the rind. Cold marinated asparagus with frisee and fresh farmer's cheese tasted lemony and light. The crab cake was also divine, but my opinion may be biased, as I have been homesick for this kind of food lately. They sure do mean it when they call them ‘small' plates at Cortez, and at about $11 per dish, I would only come on special occasions. ”

“
Took my b/f to this restaurant last weekend and our tummies were very satisfied. The decor is a little on the chic side but enjoyable. Our waiter was pleasant. As always we ordered way too much food for just the two of us but nothing went to waste. The risotto was alright but everything else was very fresh and tasty. ”

“ romantic ambience and good for group too. A little bit too dark for my tastes. I barely could read the menu' but at the same time I enjoyed sitting right in front of the kitchen where 5 young cooks where creating their tasty plates. We started we two tapas, delicious prawns perfectly cooked and fish of the day chevize so good that it melted in our mouths. I had salmon as a main entree and my husband had lamb well prepared as well. desserts were delicious I enjoyed the apple smith with yogurt sorbet and my husband had a waffle banana with incredible tasty ice cream. ”

“
ONly went to the bar for some champagne. The decor is Lloyd Webber-esque. Just enough lighting. Staff nice. I would go back especially in the neighborhood where it is really cheesy (ruby skye) or over the top(clift). ”

“
I used to think that "small plates" was just another way for the restauranteurs to skimp on the portions, while expecting their patrons to pay ridiculously high price for their food. But alas, I've adapted to the concept. Small portions really forced me to savor each bite, instead of gulping down the food. Each small dish was superbly prepared with the utmost detail and big on taste. We were treated like VIP's (and no, sharing the same name as the producer of America's Next Top Model was not the reason). The hostess and our waiter were very accomodating and made sure that our dishes came out in a timely fashion, so that we would not miss our after-dinner engagement. The entire dining experience at Cortez was a memorable one indeed. ”

“ Very nice spot near Union Square. I was hesitant because they do small plates (that is soooo last year) but I have to say the portions were decent size. Menu was diverse and the service was top rate. It is an attractive restaraunt and overall a pleasant dining experience.

“ We chose the 3 dishes and were not disappointed. Server was very helpful in making suggestions. The prices were reasonable and we told them we were going to the theater. We were able to enjoy our meal and had plenty of time to make curtain call.

“ I was about to rank this place neutral if it wasn't because of the food. They messed up the reservation I've made, hence we had to wait about 20 min at the bar. The waitress is friendly but the service is so slow. We were there for 2 hours literally (plus the 20 min). They serve small plates and we only ordered 5 plates, I didn't expect it to be that long. Nonetheless, the food was excellent and I like the decor. Try the peanut butter cake for dessert, it's so good.

“ My friends and I dined at Cortez before seeing a play at ACT. I had read about their pre-theater dinner online and the menu looked phenomenal. I had to ask our waiter for the special menu (which seems to be quite a good deal overall). We ordered different appetizers and entrees and shared plates. The frisee salad with smoked trout was really delicious, a bit creamy with bold apple flavor. The mains were all dissapointing. The ravioli was the best, but it still wasn't great. The salmon was almost entirely flavorless. The absolute highlight of our meal was the dessert. We ordered the chocolate peanut butter confection with banana ice cream on the side. It was divine. One of the best desserts I've ever had. Worth the trip just to try it.

“ Cool atmosphere, nice looking bar. My g/f noticed the very artsy modern lighting hanging from the ceiling. Nicely divided up so that it's not too loud. Very helpful, friendly, chatty service was also wonderfully knowledgeable about their (significant) wine selection.
Oenophiles will love the creativity and diversity of their wine list.
The food was great - 2 plates/person + dessert turned out to be the perfect amount of food; just full enough without feeling burdened.
The molten chocolate peanut butter & banana cake & ice cream dessert was beyond sublime.
The only disappointment was the wild salmon dish - they use Scottish salmon, which is clearly either freshwater-only fish or not truly wild, because it was so mild in flavor as to be entirely overwhelmed by everything around it. When I order salmon, I want to taste some yummy salmon, and while the dish was still quite good, there was no salmon flavor to be found. ”

“ Best Cucumber Gimlet ever. The waiter was helpful, but we had the private "wine room" and being such a big group, he took the liberty of ordering what HE thought was good for the table which wound up being too much and in the end sticker shock. Otherwise, a very enjoyable experience. The crab cakes are amazing. ”

“ I was suckered in by the reviews, but this place only rates a 3- (1-5 scale) at best. Poor physical design (narrow, feels like a hallway) and only fair food (the ravioli with mint and fava beans was the only standout) don't merit the prices ($240 for two, including pre-dinner drinks, wine, dessert!). Frankly, there's better food for less exhorbitant prices at _plenty_ of other places in town. Perhaps worth another visit with a larger group just for drinks and a snack, but otherwise I probably won't be back. These guys are raking it in though, got to give them credit for that ;| ”

“ Chef Quinn Hatfield combines his mediterranean-inspired small plates with creative presentations. The small plates are very pleasant to look at. My favorites are Katafi crusted crab cake and Olive Oil poached local halibut. The special crust of the crab cake is not just pleasant to see but also adds additional depth to the texture. The halibut is perfectly cooked - soft and tender. The decor is contemporary with chic baby-mobiles-lamps and colorful pieces. Service is attentive. ”
