“
India Clay Oven occasionally gets my business because there aren't other indian restaurants in the immediate area. The food is nothing special - occasionally poor - and is a bit overpriced compared to the quantity and quality you receive. I especially feel ripped off when ordering takeout, as they seem to mark up prices for takeout and also skim further on portion size. As others mentioned, there is a very long delivery wait. I end up ordering from Masala instead, and feel content with my choice. What is odd is that their other location in SoMa is decent. ”

“ I love a place that delivers on a cold night, when I don't feel like cooking. My food took an hour to arrive. A bit too long. The food was pretty average, but satisfying. The naan seemed to have been made hours ago. The chicken tikka masala (which isn't even really indian) was unusually bright, but hit the spot all the same. I ordered a "combo" meal, with a choice of vegetable masala as the entree, and got saag paneer instead. Even though it wasn't what I ordered, I enjoyed it. All in all, I wasn't overly impressed, and I doubt I will get their food delivered again.

“ We were there for dinner on Sat and got seated right away. The Kashmiri chicken kebobs were probably the best kebabs I have eaten in a while- very well marinated and cooked to perfection. Most of the other grilled food was standard, the biryani wasn't much different from other indian restaurants but I'd surely go back for their kebobs. ”

“ I was here last night for a late dinner and I had a very different experience than the other people who have reviewed, mostly for lunch buffets it seems. My friend and I ordered the chiken tikka massala, veggie korma, bindi massala, garlic naan and kashmiri naan. The food was fantastic, the service was incredibly friendly and fast. our water glasses were never empty. The amount of food served was generous. I would go back any day. ”

“ I don't make it out to too many restaurants in the Richmond, but I met a friend here for lunch and we ended up going for the buffet. The food was not very fresh as expected from a buffet. Tandoori Chicken had good flavor, but it was a little dry from sitting there so long. The service was very blahhhhh.

“ This review only pertains to their LUNCH BUFFET. So far, theirs is the best indian buffet I've had in the city. I'm comparing it to the buffets at India Palace, Star India, Bombay indian, and Raja Cuisine of India.
The one time I went, the food was, by far, the best compared to these restaurants – on a completely different playing field. The ingredients were fresher and more flavorful. The presentation is also elegant compared to the other buffets. Nice to be able to have a meal in a more upscale setting for only $7.95.
I don’t know if this is the best indian food in the city, bc/ I don’t go to anything but buffets. Variety is more important to me than quality, and buffets don’t always have the freshest food. But if you’re on a budget and like having lots of choices, I would recommend this place.
As far as bad service is concerned, that’s not an issue bc/ it’s a buffet. ”

“ Not a fan of this place. The food isn't good; it has no flavor. Tends to taste either milky or watered down. The service and attitude really ruins it all! There's many better places than this. If you live in the Richmond area, I suggest going to Great India on Geary/25th Avenue. The inside looks boring, but the food is excellent! The service is a lot better than what you would get at India Clay Oven. ”

“ I'm disapointed to see so many poor reviews, as India Clay Oven is my favorite indian spot in the city. I do agree that the waitstaff and owners aren't overly friendly, but that doesn't make the food taste any different, and the food is great.
Naan, warmto the touch, is served in large, chewy semi circles. The mint/cilantro chutney and "purple stuff" (tamarind sauce?) is always so fresh and never quite the same, sometimes spicier, sometimes sweeter.
Whether it's take-out or dining in, we always get prawns jal frezie, a potpouri of vegetables, tomatoes, and prawns, served either spicy or mild. Ordering "spicy" is borderline unenjoyable; "medium-spicy" makes my mouth happy.
Chicken vindaloo is served in an almost creamy sauce, very hot and very spicy. Other favorites are the chana masala (chickpea/garbanzo dish) and saag paneer. The spinach is wonderfully smooth and the cubed farmer's cheese tastes mild (not pungent) but holds up until biten, that is, it doesn't fall apart. ”

“ There is better indian food to be had in the city, for much less money. The last time we ate here, the server kept putting his fingers in our food and when we pointed this out to the owner, he was unapologetic. I'd suggest going down to the Tenderloin for some good indian food. ”

“ My wife and I have been here many times and we always we say that we will never return. Now its for good. Ever since they moved across the street, Malhi, the guy with orange coloring in his hair doesnt care about the customer. He tries to sell wine, beer and other beverages to you and yet not care about anything else. Bus boys dont speak english. The old lady doesnt speak english but if you use hand gestures, she will understand. Phones are constantly ringing and they take prevalance over the customer sitting in the room. Pack up as many chairs as possible so that you dont have any room to sit around. When taking the prix fixe menu for two, they often leave out the dessert thinking that you decided not to have it. Had a nice guy, dark complexion working at the old location and when I asked Malhi where he was, he said vacation. ”
