An SF classic, for sure. I REALLY want to like this place, but the food just really hasn't done it for me. Cute though and the staff is nice. Review #21066

For a place known as a SF tradition, my friend and I were really let down by the food. Service lousy too - got our order wrong. I wouldn't go there for the price, though the seating is good for people watching. Review #20242

Perry's, with us Pleasantly surprised. First thought was that I had gone back in time to those pubs from college campuses with their dark green walls, marble tables and brass everywhere. The crowd was distinctly local and casual. Most impressive thing the entire evening was the professionalism of the entire staff. wow...in SF. The menu seemed basic enough...burgers, grilled fish, quesadillas, lasagna and other pasta dishes. Everything we had was very good though maybe a bit overpriced. I didn't have complaints about noise and that can be a pet peeve of mine. Maybe there were no screamers that night. Review #18996

This place is an institution for Union Street, one of the first singles bars in the city....But not no more, Perry's now caters to the older crowd. If you like noisy barrooms this is the place, not really for me though. I've been there twice and both times grease is high on the ingredient list. I did enjoy the Chili and the poppyseed bun on the burger was a nice change - however the definition of medium-well is a little different at Perry's - why so pink? To the gentlemen running Perry's, please take a look at the basics and see what you think. Review #18113

The host was very charming and welcoming. He had reserved a nice table for us in the front next to the Christmas tree but... We arrived at 7:03 for a 7pm reservation and our table had been given away by another waiter 10 minutes before. So we dined in the back. Much quieter spot than the front but the decor was not nearly as festive. Our waitress was solo in the back and overloaded. Nice but slow. Ahi tuna appetizer - fresh and well seared but a little bland. Came with stir fried julienned veggies. The crab cakes - not so great. Too greasy and too browned. Enchilada platter was good. 2 enchiladas, rice, beans, guacamole. Generous amount of food. The lamb skewers were very good. Tender lamb chunks with cherry tomatoes, onion, mushrooms on a bed of rice. We didn't get dessert. In all a pleasant experience but not typically a place we would go to. The food was good but I can cook it as well or better so why go... Great place for sports bar and comfort food fans. Review #17869

Way more casual than I had expected, I almost hate to admit that it has taken me all these years to make it to Perry's. Maybe a hold-out from its uber-straight reputation a la Tales of the City? In any case, we had a very enjoyable meal that was the closest thing to home cooking I have experienced in years. The wait person was just adorable and very attentive without being obnoxious. I will definitely be back to make up for all the years I've missed. Review #17844

I didn't realize that Perry's was a comfort food restaurant. I wanted to try everything, but settled on the Pot Roast which was very well prepared! So tasty and more than I can eat. Next time I'll try the Mac n Cheese and possibly the fish. I had the Apple Cobbler for dessert and it was fresh and delicious. Service was very friendly and attractive! Review #17774

Skip the potato skins for the appetizer. The dish was pretty bland, despite globs of melted cheddar and bacon on top. I had the steak tenderloin sandwich, which had lots of good flavors but a bit on the greasy side. The desserts could use some creativity though. Putting a scoop of vanilla ice cream in the center of a brownie was a bore. Our waiter was accomodating, though I didn't understand why other diners started with breadsticks, and all we got was water. Review #17530

A few bright spots: the mac & cheese is excellent, and so was the cheese stick appetizer. The iceberg wedge with bleu cheese dressing was so-so. However, my dining companion said his steak was flavorless, and had to get some A1 to get it down. It was also a bit pricey for the quality you get. Not a bad experience by any means, but not necessarily a place I'd be dying to go back to. Review #17346

I visited Perry's Union St. location with two guests after winning an SF Survey meal there. Unfortunately, I wasn't impressed. Perhaps it was an off night for the kitchen & the wait staff but my previous experience at their downtown location was MUCH better. The waiter never brought the table water and was not particularly attentive to our needs. Our plates sat for at least 10 minutes after we'd finished our meals. My halibut was on the small side for $20 and was over cooked and dry. The vegetables and mashpotatoes were quite good and my caesar decent. I realize that its a bar too but something did not seem right about charging $20 a plate and having a football game on with rowdy bar goers and too-loud to comfortably talk bad music playing. In addition, one of my eating companions ordered a Coke and got two refills only to discover when the bill arrived that they charge $1 per refill- I think its terrible for a restaurant to charge for refills esp. when unannounced! We won a dinner to Perry's. The service was fantastic. We had multiple people waiting on us and they were all very friendly and went out of their way for us. Though Perry's is a sport's bar technically, it was much nicer than I expected. It didn't seem too sport's bar-ish. The ribs and fries were delicious. The fried calamari was good, but a tad greasy. We had a great time! Thanks Perry! Review #16646

You can always count on Perry's for a lively bar scene. Great for watching sports and chatting up friends and neighbors. Service is prompt and friendly. The onion soup was excellent, lots of cheese and savory bread. The fish and homemade thick-cut chips is good but not great. Review #16301

Perry's on Union is a great place to go and is never too long of a wait. Great if you can get there early on a weekend for outside seating. Their food is pretty good, but you have to be willing to wait for pretty slow service. I have been there at least 10 times and have never once been impressed with the service. However, their location and atmosphere carries them through pretty well. Good food, great bloody mary's. Review #15579

"when i walked in, i thought this place would be some ordinary restaurant/bar with okay food. didn't think too much of it at first but my mind changed later. what did get me was the staff was extremely nice and accomodating. awesome folks. free dinner courtesy of sfsurvey.com (hurrah! thank you!!). which is why i checked out perry's in the first place (i never really bothered to explore union st./marina area until lately). the crab cakes were pretty good for starters, ahi tuna sandwhich was excellent!, and the ginger cake with ice cream was pretty yummy too. definitely going to make a trip back there." This is a great neighborhood restaurant. If you're thinking about a new place to try for dinner, definitely give Perry's a try. Even better, go on a Monday when all bottles of wine are half off. For starters, we had the sesame crusted ahi ($10.50) and the dungeness crab cakes ($11.50). While both were average, I really liked the spicy 1000 island-like sauce for the crab cakes. The sauteed petrale sole muniere ($17.95) was perfectly cooked, but the sauce was a bit too lemony which slightly overpowered the fish. The grilled flank steak ($17.95) ordered medium rare was perfect and juicy. For dessert, our waiter recommended the apple brown betty with vanilla ice cream ($5.95) which was good, but only because the other choices included such typical fare like cheesecake, sundaes and pound cake. Corkage is $12, so we were happy about that, as well as the $60 certificate I won from sfsurvey. Overall, a good restaurant with great service. Review #13824

The food is so unexceptional that I don't even remember what I ordered. So overall, not a bad place if you're looking for a sports bar downtown. Review #12532

I like the sailor bar/sports bar atmosphere. It's a fun place to hang out on a low key afternoon or evening. The food is pretty good. I had a burger the time I went for dinner and drinks only the rest of the times. I'm going to have to try the lobster based on previous reviews. Review #5474

Perrys goes back and forth for me. I like the breakfast where I can get the Beneflor which is 1/2 eggs benedict and 1/2 eggs florentine. It's the perfect combination and they actually have that in the computer because lots of people like that together. This place has been a staple on Union Street since I was 15 and I've been going there for a looooonnng time. I suspect it will be around for at least another 80 years. I'm not certain if I like their new menu for lunch and dinner. I have tried it a couple of times and have been disappointed. But for breakfast, sure, I like it. Review #579
