“ Its a very good place to eat. I love that its intimate when you are seated, and the whole restaurant is inviting you to relax. A nice tall beer, and a wonderfully cooked rib eye steak made my evening at Houston's complete. Go there with people that you are not trying to impress, but people you love to be with. The place is a little packed at times, but when you are seated you will not notice. ”

“ Pretty good for a chain restaurant. My lemon drop was mighty tasty, and the artichoke appetizer was delish. I prefer my ribs spicier, but I certainly can't argue with their flavor and succulence. I was glad I wasn't paying.

“
Very nice atmosphere. Went based on the rave reviews. Left unhappy about the price of dinner for 2 ($120). Least expensive bottle of champagne ($42). Least expensive bottle of wine ($34). $34 for a bottle of Rosemont Merlot you could get at Safeway for $9. Food was fine, but not to die for. At $31/ plate, you can do a lot better in this town. ”

“ they tell me everything here is delish.... for lunch, i order the bbq short ribs... the meat practically falls off the ribs when you touch it... so juicy and tender. it comes w/ super skinny crispy fries... i also shared the thai noodle salad which comes w/ chunks of avocado, mango and cherry tomatoes... we had the roasted artichokes which were excellent with the spinach dip it came with. our waiter was in training, but he was really nice to us, even though they kept "trying" to bring us more roasted artichokes and walked away when they realized we already had one. watch out for the cold nothing special "peel and eat" shrimp... it was $21 on our tab, almost as much as the hawaiian swordfish. ”

“ Good ole boy meets high end Annie". This place give us comfort, and this fine establishment does that for me!! Although they are a chain, you can find a treasure in a chain"..and a chain in a treasure"(ha ha ha) . Ok..moving on" The ribs, chicken, steaks and their dips are all winners" in my mind and you can not go wrong. We really need a place that is ' ALL American" so this is my nomination. Personally, I think I just liked their ribs so much that I am getting a bit carried away. Anytime now you will be hearing the Star Spangled Banner being played.
Seriously, this my be a little bit higher end as far as pricing..but its worth it. It reminds me of Los Altos Grill in Los Altos(formerly Bandera) same owners. I like this location in the downtown and close to the Embarcadero. I would reckon to say ..if Elvis still were alive(you know he is/spotted at 711 in Houston, TX) this would be his kind of place too!

“ We went on a crowded, rainy night.....what a pleasant surprise to go inside and get seated right away in a spacious booth. Even with a large fireplace nearby, the place is dark....we had to laugh when the waiter gave us the menu......together we pulled out our little keychain flashlights to read the menu. I, myself enjoy dimly lit places. I had the hawaiian ribeye...it was cooked perfectly...tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor. The prices are comparable to other steakhouses. I enjoyed my steak while sipping on wine and listening to a trio playing some jazz. It was a relaxing evening. I recommend trying this restaurant for a special occasion! ”

I love their mouthwatering, infamous "Knife and Fork Ribs." The ribs are so tender that you don't even need the knife. The steak and artichoke are equally delicious. This place offers excellent food, great service, and a cozy atmosphere. ”

“ Ahi Tuna Salad is oh-so-lovely with fresh ripe mango and intense spring mix. I always like to ask for bread -- they bring over a plate of foccacia and olives. The prices make it easy for this place to NOT become a habit, but it's nice when the sun is shining and you can sit outside to enjoy the sparse San Francisco warmth. I've had pleasant experiences with their service.
The only thing that annoys me about Houston's is that you can't order take-out unless you are present inside the establishment. A mild irritation, really.

“ Houston's has hands down the best french dip sandwich on earth! Fresh sliced prime rib on great bread with home made mayo that melts in your mouth after being dipped in the au jus. It comes with crispy skinny fries that are also delicious, and i always get a side of cole slaw because it's the best I've ever had! Go For It! Awesome food, can't believe it's a chain. The smoked salmon appetizer is amazing as well.

“ This place is so-so. Some of the food is quite good, but a lot of it is just OK, frankly. Service is erratic and often rushed. My last visit there, two of us were seated at a tiny table. We were nowhere near done with the (shared) appetizer when the salads arrived, leaving us to juggle our plates and try to find room on an already crowded, postage stamp-sized table. Two minutes later and, you guessed it, the MAIN DISHES ARRIVE! Server didn't even try to help but instead waited for us to do even more juggling, re-arranging, etc. It was ridiculous (at this point we've got three courses of food plates, cocktail, wine and water glasses all on the table, it would have been funny if their prices weren't so high). Server offered to "hold back our entrees," but a ribeye steak cooked medium can't really handle too much "holding back" in an oven. Still, decent atmosphere and, like me, they've got a thing for fires. I will return, but not when it's busy. Please slow down! ”

“ Recently was at Houston's on a Saturday, we had a large party ((9). In a empty restaurant the Hostess was unable to make the effort to sit us close enough so that we could have conversation. That was after many requests for her to do just that. We had the most horrible waiter (Ben) who was totally useless, he brought nothing to us unless requested (i.e. water, menus, etc). Never came by to check to see if we were doing okay with our orders. Finally we get the check (both tables on one check) and a 18% tip was already added, we should have had two checks. Our waiter wasn't worth 18%, he would have been lucky to get 2%!! The food was not great, very salty french fries, everything else was pretty much tasteless. I have frequented the Houston's in L.A. and it is wonderful, great service, wonderful food but I will never go to the one in S.F. again.

“ I've eaten at this chain in other cities and for some reason, this Houston's is far and above better than the other ones! The service is consistently friendly and attentive, and the food is always good. The decor is dark but inviting, and the seat spacing is such that you don't hear all of your table neighbor's conversations. The wine list is rather impressive (plenty of GOOD wines by the glass) and reasonably priced. I don't recommend coming on a Friday or Saturday night due to the tourist crowd looking for a default familiar place to eat...waits can be long. In a city full of accesible good eats, this chain restaurant does well in my book! ”

“ The best restaurant in the city. I have been here many times. The food and service are consistently great. The view is nice and one can actually find parking on the street or at a garage. “ I attempted in vain to order an $11.00 cheeseburger to take-out from Houston's at lunchtime today. Entering a completely empty restaurant except for two cashiers, a Maitresse D', a long line of short-order cooks and waitstaff all standing idly by, the cashier couldn't immediately respond to my take-out burger request. Instead, she left her post to formulate the question to the Maitresse D'. After some time, the cashier then returned, mumbling some concern that "We don't usually do take-out orders until between 2-5 when the restaurant is less crowded. However, since no one is here, you may be allowed to order one." I enquired if she had placed the order. "Oh, no, you have to sit at the bar to order." The bar, however, was completely empty with no one in sight. After an inordinate wait, I had to leave empty-handed, no 11 dollar burger in hand, with the long line of short-order cooks and staff still standing idly by. Apparently, someone wants me to diet, hee hee. ”

“ Good service, quality food (albeit a bit uninspired), slightly high prices, dark dining room. I can't complain about the food, as it was pretty good. However, it just seemed...plain. For $20-30, I think I'd rather spend the money eating something more interesting. But, my ribeye was tasty, the brussel sprouts were sweet, the smoked salmon appetizer was amazing...everything was consistently good. Just feel that it is a bit overpriced. ”

“ One of the worst dining expereinces I have had in a long time. Went for a late lunch today. Hostess asked us our name and said it would be a couple of minutes for seating inside. We went to the bar at a diagonal from the hostess stand and ordered a drink while we waited. At least three groups of people walked in after us and were seated immediately. Restaurant was only half full. Hostess kept looking at us but would walk around and grab other groups. I got fed up and approached the second hostess and asked why weren't being seated she glanced at the list and hostess #1 had failed to write our name on the list. Didn't bother to ask us why we were standing there staring at her either. Hostess 2 apologized and sat us right away. Server got order wrong (5th time in row). RIbs used to be my favorite but today they were dry no big deal but they were covered in little hairs like they dropped the food. Server claimed at first it was fillament from the bone LOL ”

“ We did one of those VP's in town early dinners here, and it was really good, like Kuletos on the wharf is really good--Solid, consistent and and no surprises. If you never eat in a place like this, you'll think it's really great. If you are only just eye-candy for some higher ranking official on the ropes who is counting on you to be the foil at dinner when the big guns are in town, wear your sunglasses into the place and hug everyone with a towel in their hand, blow kisses to all the girls in black pants, and in three weeks, you will be named the successor to the schmuck that decided you all should go there on the company's dime. ”

“ I love Houston's - used to work next door and had happy hour there about 3 times a week in the good old days. It is a meat and potatoes place - even when I order a salad I feel like I ate meat! Some really addictive dishes: the spinach and artichoke dip with sour cream, salsa, and tortilla chips is really good. Can't stop eating it. Great service - you will never walk away unhappy. This is a great restaurant with lots of good options. The grilled veggie platter is delicious, but why not go for the steak! ”

“ I had previously reviewed Houston's and gave it a neutral, but after dining there a few more times, I was compelled to change that to "positive." The last three times I dined at Houston's, the experiences have all been extremely satisfying. Their staff is competent and mellow, the food is consistently good and the vino-friendly no-corkage-fee policy makes Houston's a stand-out. I have enjoyed all of their starters and their tortilla soup (served tuesdays and thursdays) is creative and delicious. Their burgers are also good, as well as their Niman Ranch Pork Chops and their Wild Salmon when in season. Sometimes I dine outside on their heated patio when I have my little dog with me, and that makes it very fun for both of us. ”

“ I went on a Friday night, and the place was packed so make sure you make reservations. The atmosphere was pretty lively with both locals and tourists enjoying themselves in SF. I was most impressed with the Ahi Tuna Salad. The other items we ordered such as the hawaiian steak were pretty average. The portions were huge though so you don't have to really order too much to get full. Service was very good. Definitely a place to consider if you're around the Embarcadero area. ”

“ Great ribs, and I don't like ribs. Strangely, they also have good chips and guacamole. Good sides, like fries, mashed potatoes, artichokes, and beets. *You get two free with your ribs.* They don't take reservations, although we have been able to get one at lunch with larger parties. (although we had to sit at separate tables). No corkage fee, and really reasonable wine prices. My boyfriend's brother was irritated once bc they made him remove his baseball hat when he had hat head. Longer wait for parties of 4 or more during the busy dinner hours (7-9, Thurs-Sat). ”

“ Love this place. comfort food at it's best. It's underrated partly because of the location and tourist/local clientale mix.
Upside: Most everything on this menu is tasty and reasonably priced. Would highly recommend the ribs, hamburger, fish burger, steaks, ahi tuna salad, hacked chicken salad, and of course, a side of potatoes colcannon! Eat at the bar and watch the game--gotta love it!
Downside: Dinner can be pricey here if you like to drink alcohol--beware! ”

“ Thanks to sfsurvey, my dining companion and I were able to enjoy an almost free dinner here. When you first step inside, you will notice 2 things right off the bat. 1.) It's incredibly dark inside, and 2.) There's a gazillion people waiting for tables. People who were waiting were strewn throughout the bar and the host kiosk. Very busy place. The staff there is extremely friendly! We got there late (15 minutes) and didn't even have to wait that long for our table (waited 10 minutes). Our server was really nice and attentive. They keep checking up on you. And the food is pretty good overall. Of course, it's not spectacular food, but good for what you get, although I do think items are quite pricey. We had the Ahi tuna salad (my favorite item), hawaiian steak (pretty good but forgettable), Rotiserre chicken (decent), and grilled artichoke (special for the day and very good!). We didn't have dessert, b/c we were completely stuffed! Portions are huge. ”

“ The food is overpriced, the staff is not friendly. I've had the thai steak salad and hawaiian steak. Not bad, but not fabulous, either. The best thing from there you can't even find on the menu...the cheesy bread. Ask for it! After our meal, we ordered coffee and ALL THREE COFFEE CUPS HAD LIPSTICK ON IT. Disgusting! It took over 15 minutes to get that horrid coffee. The waiter was horrible. He never bothered to check on us although he whizzed past us time and time again. We finally had to flag him down to tell him about the gross coffee cups. He gave the most weak and insincere apology. I think his name was Tom.
Our office is going there for lunch today. Not really looking forward to it.
I would NOT go there on my dime. ”

“ Ok, so it’s a chain restaurant, so is Postrio if you want to think about it! This place has individual charm and the food is not bad! As usual, I saw a parking space and took it! Next I started looking for a place to have dinner, and guess what! Viola! Houstons. If it was anything like their Rutherford Grill, I knew I would not be disappointed and guess what , I wasn’t. The plate portions are too generous, the steaks are done properly ( wow) , fries were excellent and plentiful! Wait staff responsive and seemed happy! Plus they kept their noses out of your table unless needed! I hate waiters that ask questions while you are busy chewing your food. The place was busy and fun! The dessert was ample enough to split with out getting jealous. All in all, I will return! (If I can find parking). ”

“ Just an update to my earlier review-at a recent dinner here the service seemed to be lacking and not as accommodating as in the past-also the prices seem to have gone up and portions -at least on the sides with the ribs-seem to have gone down.
. Okay, so it's a chain but I still think they have the best ribs I've had in SF. I love the ribs here so much, I've never been able to bring myself to order any other dish here. The grilled artichokes are also fantastic and I love being able to substitute them for the fries that normally come with the ribs-makes it a totally low carb meal. Generally service is pretty good, even when they are crowded. And yes, there is often a wait but you can sit outside and have a drink or watch the cooks in the open kitchen at work. I've known them to slip a plate of fries to customers waiting nearby. Oh and on some evenings there is a nice jazz group playing but you often can't hear them very well unless you can get a table nearby. ”

“ Discovered them when I lived in Houston, Texas and was so glad to find them in San Francisco. (they took over the old Rusty Scupper location). The atmosphere is elegant but cozy and the wait staff is very helpful with recommendations. When in season, try the Key Lime Pie...awesome! Also, a favorite is the Ahi Tuna salad with mangos. Food is consistently good. ”

“ This is a great place if you're in the mood for good seafood or steak and a c***tail. This is also a great place to take people for lunch on business! Just be prepared to wait since they don't take reservations. ”

“ A dependable place with decent steaks and portions larger than is healthy for the gut but I guess if you're into the doggie bag thing that's OK. Service can slip every now and then like my last visit but overall it's worth a visit if you like a busy open style restaurant and good American style cooking. ”

“ Not a typical chain restaurant, Houston’s makes everything in-house, they buy local fresh produce, they butcher their own meats, and they even make their own ketchup! How many “chain” restaurants do that? How many privately owned restaurants do that? Don’t let your own bias cheat you out of a good meal. Casually elegant atmosphere and service is at the top of their game. We sat at the bar, had some spinach dip and drinks while we waited for our table. I had the seared tuna salad...divine, think sushi salad. My guest had the BIGGEST pork chop ever, this baby was a good 3-4 inches thick! I stole a bite and it was perfectly cooked and seasoned. ”

“ Houston's was a favorite restaurant of mine since 1998 when I first visited the restaurant in Houston, Texas. I have been going to the one in SF, since moving back to the City in 2000. It was always a reliable place to get good, wholesome food. NO MORE. I went there tonight, and I could hardly recognize the menu. The choices were pathetically paltry and frankly, boring. The worst part was most of their customers' favorite items had been removed from the menu. I ordered the hawaiian ribeye steak. The flavoring was way off. It seemed as though the cook just slapped on some teriyaki sauce. I remember Houston's used to be pretty generous with the portion size, leaving me satisfied at the end of the meal. The final bill was $90 for an appetizer, two sub average entrees and 2 nonalcholic drinks. I left craving for more food after leaving the restaurant. ”

“ What a great job for a chain restaurant. I don't think there's one thing that I've ordered and not enjoyed. From the ribs, to the spinach dip & tortilla chips to the basic burger - everything is divine. Comfortable, warm dining room and yes, there's a wait sometimes, but it's worth it. One of my favorites is the "chicken platter", it's not on the menu anymore - but they'll still make it for you if you ask nicely. ”

“ Ah, Houston's one of the best places to get a huge good tasting salad. They even have a sashimi salad! Almost everything on the menu is excellent but what you will love is the excellent multiple servers that take care of you. You really don't even need to look around for a waiter cause they are everywhere and especially on busy days. ”

“ There's a reason why it takes 1 hour to get a table and the line runs out the door. Food is good, real good. Appetizers are a must -try the fries and the artichokes. seafood and steaks are good, as well as the falling off the bone ribs. The wine list is pretty reasonable: had a Plumpjack Cab there recently that was marked up only 20-30%. Service can be a tab slow when busy. Just go there with a good attitude and hang out at the bar while waiting for your table. ”
