Super crowded on Sat nights. Tables are set too close to one another. Cool paintings. The food is great. Must have the scallops with foi gras and mushroom. BBQ ribs ain't bad. Mixed seafood salad is divine, has a nice lemon juice kick to it. And last but not least, the whole fried red snapper. There's no other easier way to eat fish than here. They'd already debone the monster for you. The curry dipping sauce is tasty and the coconut rice, yum, can I eat this by itself any day, any time. The rice is not too moist, not too dry, just perfect. Review #20903

The wait staff were friendly and helpful. The food so-so. My dish was the mariscos y arroz. It was boring. My boyfriend had the fried red snapper basket. It was tasty and presented in a unique way. They had a good selection of german rieslings. Overall, I would say it's a nice one time shot place. Review #20745

This is a VERY cute restaurant in the mission. We had reservations at 7 on a Thursday night, got there at 645 and were seated immediately. The service was phenomenal from begin ng to end- never had an empty glass of sangria (very good, sweet with tiny pieces of fruit instead of the big chunks) or water. We started with the ahi tartare, served with fried wonton skins. It was plated nicely and tasted just as good as it looked. Next we had th ceviche limon and ceviche de camarones. The first had fish, octopus, squid, shrimp, and then mussels, peruvian corn, and a sweet potato on the side-this was my favorite- the most citrusy. As they serve each plate they describe what is in it- very cool. The ceviche camarones was great- all shrimp with a sweet sauce that had a kick. We then shared an entree that had all sorts of seafood atop saffron rice. Whatever they put in the sauce was AMAZING. We finished with the chocolate cake- one of the best we've had!! Review #20020

When I ate at the place, it was good service and food wise. But I want to give a heads up on the to go option, because I have to say it wasn't great. I don't know if they cooked it faster or what, but it was largely flavorless and it was waaaaay later than promised: like 30 mins. I understand things happen in a popular place, but that's the worst late delivery of to go I've ever experienced in the city and I've been eating out here 14+ years. Review #19438

Limon, with us We (party of 5) ordered a bunch of plates to share and nothing really stood out for me. The Limon ceviche was good -chose this if you're debating over others. The calamare was very tender but I wasn't so fond of the batter. The waiter spilled our drink order over my friend. The good thing was they offered to dry clean her jacket and also gave us 2 free desserts. I've been wanting to try Limon for a while now. And now that I have I can check it off and probably not go back. Review #19072

I hate giving neutral reviews, but Limon deserves it. Great ambience, quite chic really... It's kind of out of the way...do not expect traditonal peruvian, quite stylized really...It's kind of pretentious...do not expect really delicious, quite non-descript really...I'm Switzerland when it comes to their peruvian dishes. I took a friend here to celebrate her new job and we both had delicious food here. I didn't love the way the tables were packed together. It makes it hard to have a private conversation. I have been dragged here over and over and NO MORE! I am so underwhelmed by the place. ALL the CEVICHE tastes the same!!! the food is expensive and uninteresting! They've got a menu of ceviches! Was here with a large group and we shared all of them. Yummy and tasty fish, squid, shrimp etc versions. The "additions" to the ceviche didn't actually add anything - just a lot of little things on the plates that tasted like hominy and took up space. Had a seafood on rice dish and it was divine! Smelled fantastic, was super filling, and tasty. Cute waiters was a bonus, although the space was a little cramped and noisy. Review #16513

Everything about Limon is wrong. It is just not traditional peruvian cuisine. After returning from Peru I finally found real peruvian cuisine at a restaurant called Karmanduka in the Richmond district. It is in a whole different league, and ironically, mainly undiscovered and unpretentious (what a shocker!) You should definitely check it out. Try the Pescado a lo macho. Snapper in a tomato base covered with succulent seafood. No offense Limon, but you try too hard in all the wrong ways. Go to Karamanduka for a real meal! Review #15820

You don't come here for a relaxing dining experience. It's crowded, you cannot hear your dinner partner, the waiter has to repeat everything, you are sitting next to people and hearing everything they are talking about, the service is slow to horrible and the prices are way to expensive for what you get. Sorry, not worth the effort in looking for parking. Review #15728

The down side is that you basically sit on top of the neighboring table, but the food and wine are delicious. It was a very pleasurable meal, except for the end when one of the neighboring guests moved and hit my wine glass, throwing my wine. The server apologized but instead of automatically replacing my wine asked me if I would like a new glass. I thought that was a bit odd. But despite this the food was delicious and the crowd fun--I recommend Limon to anyone who likes peruvian/Latin flavors! Review #13730

Yummy food. I had the Lomo Saltado, Top Sirloin slices with onions, tomatoes and fries, served with a side of rice. The meat was buttery and succulent, so good. Updated-6/12/06 Just got back from diner here and like my first time, I really enjoyed my meal. This time I had the pork chop with empanadas as an appetizer.. The empanadas was good but a bit too oily but it's fried so it's understandable. But my pork chop was really good... It was huge! Only finished half and it came with little bits of mushrooms and cabbage with bacon and potatoes. I cleaned the mushrooms of the plate! It was so good. The service was excellent. Review #13095

Barb & I had a 5:30 reservation. We got seated upstairs in the loft at 5:50. We drank at the bar, watched the crowd scene. We weren't in a hurry, the seating delay wasn't a problem. From other reviews, seems like this place is hit or miss. It was a good bulls eye hit for us. Appetizers, salads, fish dishes, sides, wines were all good. I enjoyed every bite. Plate presentation was above average. Neighbor tables had other dishes that were artistic looking & smelled wonderful. Not too happy about the upstairs seating that is dark, somewhat claustrophobic, though it is quieter up there. Our young Mission style boho hipster server got engaged after we offered sincere social niceties - He did just fine. Barbara wants to return again. I'm ambivalent due to: Parking difficulty, high noise level, bang-for-the-buck value is just average. This is another trendzoid place that will last 5 years before the owners move on to the next fad. Good for them. Good for us, as we like the new next thing. Review #13051

I'm going neutral on this place because I've only been there once and had a really disappointing meal, but I'm hoping that was not typical. I ordered the Saltado de Pollo, which the menu describes as sliced chicken breast sauteed with onions, tomatoes, and fries. Yes, the french fries are mixed right into the dish and, while this may be traditional, it is simply not a good idea. A really nauseous concoction. But I hope to give Limon one more try. What a disappointment! Our server was friendly and efficient in the chaos - so that's a positive. The food was ok - not awful, but far from great. Everything was drowning in mediocre sauces - even the ceviche managed to tasty heavy (and not just the cream ones). The wines by the glass we tried (Zin & Malbec) were also just so-so. Now for the really bad part. We knew it would be packed and loud, but we incorrectly assumed that it would be hip and interesting. Far from it. I have never seen so many unattractive people in one place outside an airport. I don't mean to be obnoxious. If Limon was mellow and had good food, I wouldn't care who was there. But if you're going to a place largely for the scene, the scene should be at least tolerable - hopefully cool. But I couldn't wait to get out of there - awful crowd. And to top it off, we both had RAGING headaches the entire next day, and not from drinking. Bad shrimp? Residual stress from being surrounded by loud goofballs? Review #11456

I was disappointed that Limon did not have a more authentic peruvian menu, and our waiter was rude. But with those two things out of the way I still give Limon a positive rating because the appetizers and desserts we had were excellent. Portions are small, prices are high, and it was loud, but since we knew that going in we had a great time. If you looking for a more authentic peruvian menu try Fresca. Review #11400

Limon, hyperexciting Dionysian dining destination along the Valencia food corridor, visceral Mission fusion erotic hotspot par excellence. peruvian fusion provoking a tsunami mob scene of cultural diversity into sense-shattering temptation. Enormous popularity overwhelms both kitchen and service with limited failures and exalting successes. Overly-dry presentations of tuna tartare, fried chicken and fried calamari and disappointing duck breast followed by sensational standouts: pan-seared scallops and foie gras served over a creamy yucca puree with fig sauce and purple corn reduction, superb halibut ceviche with octopus, calamari and mussels marinated in lime juice served with yam, followed by a spectacularly spiced, carmelized double-cut pork chop, bone-in. Fabulous banana dessert carmelized in panna cotta custard. Stunning 2004 Patriota Tikal, Bordeaux style full-bodied red wine from Argentina, multi-layered, opaque and delicious. Attentive, distracted service. A Latin Celebration. Review #11096

Next time when my ears get plugged up I may return to Limon. The noise level for some reason made what should be a great dining experience into something that we wanted to rush and get the hell out of the place. It’s busy & loud! Sadly because the service, and the food was excellent! The calamari appetizers were tender and not overcooked, and presentations are what you would expect in very trendy 5 star places. My fried sea bass was moist, and flavorful, as was the Loma Saltado which is cut sirloin strips with onions and tomatoes, & rice sort of like fajitas but 100 times better! The plating presentations are great and the price of the dishes are as high as the vertical elements on the dishes! They have an extensive wine list, but sadly California wines are few and far between. Because of the noise we dropped dessert. Plan to drop about $50 bucks a head for dinner plus wine. Parking is a joke, so we took a taxi from a central location. A definite return on a less stressful night! Review #10757

Excellent modern Latin fusion food in the Mission. It's very packed, and can be a bit noisy, but it's worth it. Mixed ceviche was excellent, and the portion was very generous. seafood and rice main course (like a paella) was incredible. Duck leg, prepared more in a classic french style, was also very good. Highly recommended. Review #10694

I walk out of this place with a hard-on every time. My little secret, though, is that I've never actually had a full dinner here. I'm scared that if I delve any further I'll be disappointed. When I go I always sit up front at the small table s. We get the ceviche platter 4-ways and pair it with a bottle of the Gruner Veltliner. I really don't need anything more to be happy; The ceviche and wine are the perfect match in every way. Maybe one day I'll do it all but until then Limon will be my ace in the hole. Try this as your first stop in a progressive dinner. Review #10353

By far the most spectacular find in the Mission. Enjoy the calamari...it's the best ever. Great service, usually packed, but not a long wait to be seated. If you're into a trendy, "shi-shi" atmosphere then you'll dig Limon. Dropped in unexpectedly, a bit underdressed, and felt as though staff shoved us in the back to hide us! I was expecting much more from the food-the ceviche sampler was beautiful but all of the ceviches ended up tasting too similar. Upon closer inspection of the menu I found many repeated notes and not enough bold flavors. A crowd pleaser for sure, but not for those of us who are serious about eating nuevo latino. Review #9631

Impressive. We went earlier in the evening so it was just starting to fill up. (Which I think is the best time to go and check out a new restaurant as you get the most attentive service and it's not too busy and loud) Nice presentation on all of the dishes. The Soup of the day, Shrimp tomato bisque, was amazing. Creamy and spicy. Classic Ceviche dish was delicious. Tangy flavors of grapefruit juice. I had a dish with shrimp and potatoes(can't remember the name) The sauce was flavorful but I thought it needed a bit more spice to it. Desert sounded fabulous on paper but seemed a bit small, pricey and not as fab. Filled pastry puff, with home made ice cream caramel and kiwi puree. Fun dining experience over all. Review #8798

Very Disappointed. Went with a group of 9, 8:30pm reservation. Parties of 8 or more are forced to order from the more expensive ($45) prix fix menu. Although I knew about this because of sfsurvey, they didn't confirm this with me until the day of the reserv. Very misleading and no info on website. Menu: Appetizers and desserts are fixed, you pick an entree. We enjoyed the ceviche, tuna tartare and soup. Entrees: 6 ordered the top sirloin, which was caked with salt. Several found it unedible. 2 ordered the ribeye, 1 wanted it rare and it arrived well. Couldn't return it since.... it arrived at 10:15pm!! Yes, food service was terrible. Cold Appetizers came at 9:15pm (remember, we arrived at 8:30). Hot Appetizers at 9:45pm and entrees at 10:15pm. This for a restaurant that closes at 10pm! dessert came at 10:45pm, when the entire restaurant was empty and all the staff wanted to go home. For those wondering, no the restaurant wasn't packed. Maybe 75% full, but that's no excuse. Be wary. Review #6608

Great food and excellent service - a rarity these days. We had ceviche de pescado and an empanada to start. I had the lamb filet(s) and she had some sort of crab tower thing (?). All very good, and again the service was great. They didn't leave things stiting around and wiped the table down immediately after each course. What's more, we stepped in out of the rain at 7:45 on a Friday night and they managed to find us a great table right off the bat. Maybe we just got lucky on that score, but it did put a smile on our hungry faces. I give Limon a "4" on my personal 1-5 scale, meaning that I'd go back before going somewhere else. Review #5326

Without a doubt (at least to me) you can tell a great deal about a good restaurant from the way they serve and prepare a meal. If it's a grab for a frozen dish, a toss in the microwave, and a stab at the buttons for cooking, the service will quite likely be just as unthinking. The kind you see in fast food ghetto joints; fake grunts and counterfeit smiles seem to go along with artificial tastes and timid flavors. On the other hand, to watch someone create as they prepare a meal; the flash of inspiration as they reach for a spice; the way they move the food around to suit them or ensure it cooks evenly; the dash of this and the splash of that. The projection is that the intimate will be as exploratory and sensually exciting. Like a lush, sweeping scene of pleasures that will build one gesture, one taste upon another into an authentic meal that satisfies the senses wholly, or is that Limon? Review #3116

Good ambience (was the original location for Slanted Door) and food, great service, nice wine list. We had the Tartara de Atun (chopped raw tuna) to start - it was fresh, tasty and prettily presented. I had the lamb with lentil tacu-tacu – lamb was great and so was its jus, lentil cake was too salty for me. My friend had the peruvian Bouillabaisse – very good, but not outstanding. The dessert was a special – a tres leches sort of cake and was excellent. I think some of the popularity is trendiness - if you're in that neighborhood and want similar food, but with better value for your money, I would suggest going to Platanos (Guerrero at 18th).
