I just ate my last meal at Blue Jay Cafe. I live nearby and have tried to give the place a chance, because it really has good potential. But every time I go, I end up waiting forever; to order, for the food, for the check. The menu is nothing special, and only a couple things are good to order. Never order the mac and cheese (how do you mess up mac and cheese?). And never go if you have somewhere to be afterward, you never know how long you'll be held hostage. Review #17262

My husband and I were ignored for most of our meal by the wait staff. His fried chicken was bland and bloody. My catfish was chokeing on seasoning, and so was I. Now, I tend to judge places like this on their mac and cheese, and theirs was lacking. Seriously. I had to smother it in hot sauce to get some flavor out of it. Would it kill the people working their to make eye contact, and say something?! Review #16975

We ordered the house specialty, which is the fried chicken, but to our disappointment, the chicken had no flavor whatsoever. In fact, you would find better tasting fried chicken from Albertson's as theirs have seasonings and spices. We also ordered the grill pork chop - dry and overcooked; it was like eating dry, overly cooked white chicken. The pork chop was so dry and overcooked that it took awhile to cut into it and the meat was so white like chicken breast. This place is overrated and their food does not live up to their ratings. I love the Blue Jay. It's great on the weekends when I feel like stuffing myself sick. They have great biscuits and brunch dishes. I always order the Arnold Palmer (ice tea and lemonade). The lovely waitress refilled my glass the last time I sucked one down. The portions are generous and the price is justified. I think the only thing I didn't like was the block it is located on. But that's a minor pet peeve, and only MHO. Review #15525

Gross! and what is wrong with the service? The last waitress that waited on me for breakfast could hardly talk... she could only whisper! I had to ask her to repeat herself and the volume never rose -she looked at me as though she were about to run away in fear! COME ON, really... I have honestly tried this place a couple of times... and I have not enjoyed it ever... the walls have good color- that's the only nice thing I can say... the food sucks. Review #13392

The service here is consistently annoying. But if you are not too bugged by that then let the great food and prices completely satisfy you. There is not a whole lot to choose from on the menu, but what is there is great. For breakfast the scrambles are great, as are the biscuts and gravy. For dinner dont miss the fried chicken, and dont be afraid to order the meatloaf its fantastic. At this place the food and atmosphere are worth way more than the crappy service. Review #12778

Food was really good, especially all the fried entrees like the catfish and friend chicken. Service wasn't that great considering there was only one waitress working the whole restaurant. But we got all our food and drinks in a timely matter. Review #11604

Small place with good food. All beverages are 50% off on monday nights, which gives you an excuse to order more than one drink =) The fried chicken was very crispy, crunchy, and moist. The catfish and the tartar sauce were also good. THe crab cake appetizer was delicious with the salad under it, with a little bit of spicyness. Review #11594

The worst service I have ever had at a restaurant. I am not sure if it was an off day for this restaurant, but even though the food was very tasty I have to give it a negative for the horrid service. We arrived around noon and were told "Good Luck" by one of the patrons as they went out for a smoke. We should have taken that as a sign and left, but it was one of the few restaurants open. Because the place is a little cramped we sat at a dirty table so we wouldn't be in the way. Fifteen minutes pass, dirty plates still on the table, no menus, no acknowledgment. Then our waitress comes by ready to take our order. We let her know that we never got our menus. We ended up bussing our own table, setting our own table and getting our own water. When we finally got our food we were a bit delirious. The food was actually quite tasty, but the service was unforgivable. I will not be returning. Review #10916

Breakfast was fantastic. Egg, cheese and bacon piled on the most delicious biscuit ever! Good potatoes. Pancakes with strawberry butter were melt in your mouth yummy. Will definitely go back. Review #9551

What a disappointment! I had high hopes for this place, but the fried chicken was tasteless, the red beans and rice were bland and tasted like they came from a box, and the macaroni and cheese also needed help. You are better off making your way down the street to Popeye's for some good chicken. Review #8606

The bird can be great, or it can be crap. I prefer great. I've never before been served deep fat fried chicken that was burnt to the point of being inedible. My first time asking for a replacement dish at a restaurant, not a rite of passage to look forward to. Lunch is better than dinner. Review #8091

I've only had breakfast here, but I do have to say I keep coming back. It can get packed on a sunday for brunch, but for good reasons. The quaint neighborhood atmosphere, cycling local art on the walls, and tasty griddle cakes and sausage are a good cure for a post saturday night bender. Review #7400

this place is so hit or miss. i absolutely adore the chicken sandwich served at lunchtime very flavorful and it comes with spicy thin cut fries absolutely yummy. another plus is the great atmosphere and the well decorated decor. yet, i have been here for dinner with a number of friends and out of the 5 of us 3 of us had to send our plates back because our food was either overcooked or burned to a crisp. i would have to recommend for lunch but skip the dinner. I quite liked this place. It has a very nice, low key atmosphere. I had good fried chicken and my partner had a catfish he found tasty. dessert was quite nice. A homemade ice cream sandwich. I should like to return. Review #5948

I had a very enjoyable experience at this restaurant. My beau (who always orders the best plates) had awesome salmon and sides, whereas my prawns over beans and rice could use a little spice although the prawns were fresh and plentiful! Sitting around the counter top bar creates an enjoyable casual dining experience. I look forward to dining here again. I dined here recently for breakfast but was a little disapointed in the homefries. They were the deep fried kind - ewww! Portion was small, not a lot of options. Decent , but definately preferred the evening meal here. Review #4615

The food and atmosphere is great but the service needs some work. They waiter sat us at the bar while we waited for an open table, then gave the table to someone who showed up 10 minutes later than us. He was also rather unattentive throughout the meal. Blue Jay is new to the neighborhood, so maybe they just need to find some good staff to be a great restaurant. They have excellent fried chicken, so I'll definately be back. Review #4610

i'm a fan of the blue jay. i have had very good breakfast and lunches there. the chicken sandwich is supreme. very tender and flavorful. the ambiance is cool as well. i think it would be a good place to use in a music video cause the counter setup is super cool. relaxed, casual, and friendly. just the kind of place that i like to read the paper at when i want to have a slow weekday breakfast or lunch. to top it all off, jay is a great dude. A friend had recommended this cute neighborhood spot. Looks a bit shady outside, but definitely not the same on the inside. The place the counter seats are set up right in the center. Bar is well stocked with Red Stripe, Bottled Coke and they make yummy sweetened iced tea. Good music on the speakers, it's like going to a kick-back club for breakfast. I had poached eggs over crab cakes, soooo good. It's a dish with many levels of flavors. Most plates come with home fries and a piece of watermelon. Service was a bit slow, but the food and atmosphere was well worth it. Price is great also! Review #3017

Maybe they were having a bad day. I ate breakfast there and I'm not sure I'll go back anytime soon. Cold eggs, mushy tomatoes in my scramble and potatoes that were flavorful but chilly to the core. I brought a Canadian with me and he was quite upset that the menu said that the griddle cakes were served with maple syrup--but were instead served with the cheap imitation pancake syrup. I ususally don't review until I've eaten somewhere more than once but I'll have to say, "No thanks." this time. Review #2535

This is a great neighborhood joint. The owners are truly in touch with the neighborhood. One of the partners is Andre of Alamo Square. The prices are reasonable and the food is home cooking. If you live nearby, it's worth a visit. Review #1774
