The best ice cream made in SF. I do NOT bother with the Mission location. The Pacific Cafe Fish house on Geary & 34th serves at least 4 flavors of Mitchell's every night. Last week I asked for one scoop Vanilla & 1 scoop pistachio. They brought out a giant glass cup with more than a pint of ice cream in it. It was plenty for the three of us to share. Price = $4.95! I ain't a member of the church, so I just don't get standing in a freezing sidewalk line at bedtime, in the middle of winter, for a chance to partake of this ice cream. (For those who don't know: Mitchell's is San Francisco's only ice cream with its own religion.) When I heard about the cult, I thought this must be the place you can get durian and avocado ice cream. Been waiting for an opportunity to try durian ice cream for years, and avocado sounded pretty intriguing as well. I figured the line couldn't be too long at 8:00 PM and 5 degrees above freezing. I was wrong about everything but the avocado, which tasted a bit like green tea ice cream, but not as flavorful. To be fair, my friends had the mexican chocolate and ube, which were good, but really not sacramental. I dunno, can thirty thousand San Franciscans be wrong? Mebbe somthin wrong with my taste buds? I actually walked maybe over a mile with my husband and our dog, on one of the coldest nights, just to get a hot fudge sundae. Why? Dunno, but it tasted so good. We sat on the bench out front and enjoyed our treat. There was no line, but it was late in the evening. People would still pull up in their cars and leave with Grocery Bags full of ice cream. Huge line even on a cold night in December... in my book, that's a sign of a great ice cream place! I finally got a chance to taste their ice cream, and it was heavenly! Really worth the long wait! The only place you will find such exotic flavors like Macapuno, Ube, Lychee, Halo Halo. I like the Mango, mexican Chocolate and Coffee flavors, but get Ube for my friends who have more eclectic tastes. You will have to stand in line, even on a cold day, but it's worth it. It's the best ice cream in town. Review #15630

Mitchell's _is_ a bona-fide SF institution, and they have some wacky-cool flavors, but the sad fact is, their ice cream is junk food. It's fulla junk! Chemicals, milk paste, sweeteners, preservatives, whatever. My personal SF classic ice cream favorite is swiss Orange Chip at Swensens on Hyde Street. Or the new-fangled Ciao Bella Blood Orange Sorbet - that's amazing stuff. Anyhow, I still go to Mitchells sometimes, but it usually leaves me feeling a little funky, and in general I think it's overrated. Review #15331

Something I'm always in favor of--- a San Francisco Institution. There is something about these types of city landmarks that provide us with a glimpse into they way the city once was. Luckily, Mitchell's has escaped the fate of many of these old SF eateries. The ice cream is still as satiny and satisfying as it was in 1953. Even the challenge of parking in the lot behind the store has a certain appeal. Oh, the power of nostalgia. Review #14429

Wow, the rum raisin is so delicate that you feel you are eating silk! I got used to this flavor in Mexico and here it is hard to find! But not at Mitchell's! My friend had the mocha coffee, and the flavor of the coffee ribbon which runs thru the ice cream was intense almost like sweet espresso! Too bad that they only have one, or maybe it good that they only have location therefore making it a special occasion to visit that part of the city! Nice small parking lot in the rear! Can't wait to try the mexican Chocolate flavor next time! Review #14385

Happy summer days are here again! This certainly warrants a trip to Mitchell's for the best ice cream in the city. If you are craving it, they probably have it, try some interesting combinations; tropical flavors are made daily, Halo Halo is a must (baby coconut, jack fruit, mongo and sweet bean, purple yam and pineapple). Enjoy. Review #14368

Not to be confused with the other famous Mitchell business in town, this joint is a must-stop for all your friends and family. Ice cream to die for. Long line going out the door? The Mitchell brother have been making ice cream since 1953 and deservedly winning awards and recognition. They start with 16% butter fat and only the freshest ingredients. Expect to find authentic Bourbon vanilla, along with real Kahlua and Bailey's Irish Cream flavoring some of their delicious ice creams. They add a touch of the exotic with Philippine flavors such as mango, ube (a purple yam, also known in Japan), avocado and mexican chocolate. Dare I say yum! I really love Mitchell's and have been going there for years. It brings back fond memories of a happy wait with good friends for a scoop of spicy, pumpkin ice cream on a sugar cone dipped in chocolate during Halloween time and the sweet coconut, Macapuno ice cream on a hot summer day. I wish them all the best and hope they are around many years to come. Review #11842

Came here after Moki's sushi with my sister and it was 7:00 PM. It wasn't totally packed but we still had to take a number. It was my first time here and there were many flavors to choose from and I had trouble choosing one so I got to different ones. I tried the Buko (baby coconut) very delicious! I also tried the pumpkin ice cream because it's almost Halloween! It was definitely good but not as good as the one I had at the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival. My sis had the rocky road sundae which was also wonderful. All the calories was definitely worth it and I would come here again and and again until I have tried all of their many many flavors! delicious ice cream in exotic flavors from the tropics. Who can say "no" to avocado ice cream? (Try it first before you say "no". It is amazing!) A huge selection of flavors, so everyone will find 20 flavors they like. The prices are a bit higher than at a regular ice cream place, but it is a great splurge. No place to sit, and there are often very long waits. But worth it on a nice sunny day. Review #9962

I love this place. Reasonably priced, for the most unusual variety of ice-cream flavors. Lots of Filipino fruit flavors (Ube, Macapuno, Langka, Halo-Halo, etc) and unusual Western ones, like mexican Chocolate (has a touch of cinnamon) and a seasonal Red Peach that's better than anything you've ever tasted. The quality simply can't be beat. Great, rotating selection of sorbets (like lychee and kalamansi) and sherbets, if lactose isn't your thing. ;-) Review #7805

This place rules. I love how no matter what neighborhood people live, they'll trek clear across town to go here. There's always a great mix of people in line and even though on a warm night, it's out the door, it moves quickly and why would you ever be in a hurry when you're getting an ice cream cone?? They have a summer flavor of canteloupe which is outstanding. I'm also a huge fan of the chocolate caramel crackle. Review #7361

Mitchell's is truely amazing...hands down the best Ice Cream in SF. There's a reason why there are always lines even on rainy days...and that reason is mango, avocado, strawberry, and a host of other flavors. Excellent, creamy, fresh...grab a scoop or two, better yet, grab some to go...they won't last in the freezer for long. Oh, No! I need my Mitchell's Icecream fix now and there's a very long queue! Why is this ice cream shop so good? Why are locals obsessed with the flavors that they serve? Well, you have got to run like a gazelle to this establishment and taste for yourself. My favorite is their Ube flavored icecream. It is made of purple root that is indegenous to South-east asia. Sounds gross? I don't care what you think. More Ube icecream for me. If your taste leans more toward the mundane, then I'm sure you'll love their vanilla icecream, but I can't honestly recommend it since I haven't had it. My palate is a bit too exotique! Just kidding, I also love thier vanilla. But, really! You're in a place that serves Durian, Garlic, and Jackfruit ice cream, for godsake! Go for it! Order something unpronouncable and chances are you'll order it again the next time you find yourself at Mitchell's. Review #5291

While standing in line, I asked people if Mitchell's was good (my first time there). One lady said she had been there twice that week for the Dulce de Leche (I had to try it).
