This is one of the best restaurants in the City. The best part about it is the owner Shelly who greets everyone at the door and remembers your name. My favorite dish is the Burrata which is a mozzarella cheese made with cream! YUM! ”

“ Went here with a HUGE group of people. Got to sample a little bit of everything and a LOT of wine. The food was all very good. My favorite was the fresh mozzarella- looked and tasted like they pulled it that morning. It's a little cramped, and very loud, so don't go for a quiet dinner. ”

“ Read a write up in Food & Wine magazine so got to check it out. We did not have dinner there but we had a couple of appetizers and a few glasses of wine. We ordered the fresh Buffalo mozzarella with olive oil and the sampler cold cuts. A different cold cuts was brought out by mistake and after we ate some, we informed our server about the mistake. The correct order was put in but the incorrect order was left there for us to finish. Very nice service. The wine list is very nice, alot of italian wines that I have not seen. A little pricey but the food is extremely fresh. ”

“
finally able to try this place. Good burrata (I liked the one at Bacco better) and above the average pizza. I don't think this is 100 % authentic italian cuisine in fact none of the cooks is italian but they have studied in my country and brought back to San Fran the art of making a good wood oven pizza. I love the desserts, specially the cannoli. I would go back but A16 is not the top of my italian restaurant. Try the new one FARINA on Mission, all Ligurian specialty and handmade pasta con pesto e focaccia to die for. ”

“ Came here for their Easter brunch and I loved their Sicilian mimosa. I've never heard my husband rave about his greens, the pizzas (magherita and marinara) were delicious and my cavatelli was OK. I wasn't awed like I was over the torta. We want to go back for dinner. ”

We like to stop in for a pizza after work- and have loved every one. The crust is authentic Neapolitan crust, toppings are not too heavy, with excellent ingredients. Wines ( I usually order reds) are excellent value, unique, and diverse. Meats are perfectly braised, vegis roasted just right- all in all, one of my favorites over and over.
Only challenge is the parking- but worth it. ”

“
We arrived an hour ahead of our reservation, but were seated in the back room--which was lame. It was cold for one, and you definitely felt outside looking in, it was like indoor back patio seating. Nice overall atmosphere, for those inside, but I was little surprised at the butcher paper they put on the tables over the table cloth I thought it a little out of place for a semi-upscale Marina place. Anyway, I had the roasted chicken with a side of butternut squash and both were great. The chicken was savory and juicy all the way through, some of the best I've ever had. High marks on the food is A16's saving grace on this review I'd rate my experience just above a neutral. ”

This was a last minute restaurant pick. It is located in the Marina with horrible parking. The restaurant is small, but comfortable. The food was excellent and the service was alright. I would go back there to eat, but I would definitely take a cab next time. ”

“ Pork Tenderloin! You have to try it. A16 is on my list of current favorites. It's fun to get menu items family style. Make sure to order a pizza for the table. Beautifully thin crust and just a touch of fresh rich sauce. Nice italian wines, good service and reasonably priced. What more could you want? ”

“ Wow, I can't believe anyone is saying this place is over priced. I just got back and had a really nice dinner for 2 for $140.00. We had a nice bottle of wine and 3 shared plates and I could not be happier. It's not a stuff your face place, but more an experience.
If you are looking for a nice meal in an inviting setting, then this is the place. Yeah, there were a few who thought they were special, bit I sat back and enjoyed my dinner. Really cool and different wine list. Not a place you would go once a week, but I say you need to eat here at least once. I am making my next reservation, as it is really hard to get one here.

“ The critical reviews here have some valid points: parking, crowded, noisy, some misses on the menu & cost. All that not withstanding, this place hits the mark in some important ways. First, one may not appreciate the wine list at first glance, but it is quite good in terms of variety of fine southern italians that you will not likely get elsewhere. That alone recommends this place for me. Despite some lamenting a lack of California wines, there are more than enough places to get that fare, whereas the wines on this list are not going to be found at 98% of other places. Next, while the pizzas are admittedly a bit weak, the apps and other entrees are fresh and interesting. Finally, the noise not withstanding, this place ultimately transcends it's locale to become a city restaurant in terms of ambiance and attitude; not an easy feat in a neighborhood which more often than not drags places down to either a Union/Fillmore Street Shoppers Club reunion or a Panhellenic nightmare. ”

“ Amazing... I have been there several times in the past few months and love it more each time I go. The wait staff is friendly and very knowledgeable about their menu and wine list. Did I mention the wines...you can't go wrong, I loved that they had a large "-by the glass- list. We got to try a few different red's and White's, the sommelier even brought us a couple of samples to try for free. The Food is simple and great, thin crust pizza just like in Naples. It is hard to get a reservation before 9pm but if you are willing to eat after that it's not so bad. Marina parking is a nightmare. My only suggestion is that they need to open another restaurant on my side of town. ”

“ Waaay overrated, so sorry to say, because the staff is really nice. I went three different times just to make sure, and I won't be going back, despite the fantastic wine list. The food wasn't that interesting, and it's very loud & echo-y. ”

“ My neutral vote is a compromise. Barbara brought me here for special dinner date. Marina parking is a hassle. The place was packed, literally, it was shoulder to shoulder. Be prepared, I'm going to repeat this many times "THE NOISE LEVEL WAS DEAFENING." After screaming our names to the host, we were escorted to a table just past the open kitchen to the rear of the narrow alley-like room. Barbara sat at the banquette I got the chair on the crowded bump-way. We sat within 18 inches of our neighbors on both sides. I like cute young women on 1st meeting, I just don't want them sitting on my lap during an expensive dinner. Barb liked watching the chefs at work. I would talk with her, but the noise level prevented it. We ate really delicious food. I skipped dessert to get out of the place. I yelled to the waiter "IT'S TOO FxxxxxG LOUD IN HERE!" He was offended, too bad since I had to pay for the sonic abuse. Take out 50% of the tables & chairs, then maybe I'll return for the food. ”

“ Great atmosphere..The braised pork was really good. It was slow cooked pork breast and really tender. Their Romano pizza was also delicious. The crust was blackend just like how a oven pizza should be. It took kind of long to come out but it was good. ”

“ Yea, A16! I love the Napoli style pizza and the changing menu gives me a chance to try great new dishes. This is a good place to take someone for a birthday or to meet an old friend. The wines are really good and Shelley is just about the nicest person on the planet. This place feels warm to me and I enjoy stopping in. ”

“ I don't understand the hype. Sure, my first experience at A16 was for a work holiday party and the food was served family style, but the food they served us was the same stuff on the menu, and it was mediocre. The desserts were terrible. The ambiance was nice, if you like narrow, long, and therefore crowded restaurants, and the service was friendly, but it's not worth a return visit for a meal at their prices. ”

“ Nice, very drinkable selection of largely italian wines by the glass, priced a bit high, but all the wines I sampled were not only drinkable, but in nearly all cases very good. pizza is wonderful in a very italian sort of way, with suprisingly acidic tomato sauce. The Wild Boar Salami is a must. In fact, all the food was very good, and the seats in back on the counter along the kitchen are great fun, allowing you to watch the chefs work their magic. Get a reservation though - it's often crowded. ”

“ Three of us went and did we do the right thing--shared all of the dishes! It was really good and the service outstanding! We started out with a carafe of the Syrah (wow! for $20) and each of us had the romaine and chicory salad with lemon and olive oil($5) that was huge. Then the Funghi pizza ($13.50) which was huge and has mushrooms, grana padano, garlic, oregano, parsley and olive oil. The crust is something you dream about and I've probably told 8 people how delightful it was since! We then split the Scialatielli (like spaghetti) with cherry tomatoes, capers, black olives and garlic ($13) which was perfectly al dente and flavorful. Then orecchiette (pasta that is from Bari that is called small pigs ears) with octopus, fresh borlotti beans, chiles and mint ($8) which was rich and wonderful. We split the apple and walnut crostata with caramel gelato and cherry coulis ($7), coffee and milk chocolate semifreddo ($7) and chocolate & orange napoleon ($7). All were fabulous! 10 stars!!! ”

“ A16...my recent meal here was nothing short of miraculous at this spectacular state-of-the-art restaurant. Not usually given to hyperbole, this delightful restaurant makes one happy to live in San Francisco. Finally a cutting-edge restaurant where the food lives up to the hype which is definitely NOT generic yuppie. Be patient at dinnertime because with universal acclaim, A16 is busy. It's worth whatever wait. Try lunchtime which I just did again, having a marvelous dining experience. EVERYTHING is good: unusual, intense, delectable flavors that jump out at you (spectacular chicken thigh, homemade sausages, incredible steak, pizze, desserts), marvelous wine list (try the superb Tari). Warm nurturing service: Sommelier Shelley Lindgren is a rising wine star, incredibly gracious...let her guide you through A16's marvelous wines and have a great time. It's loud, raucous and crowded at dinnertime, difficult to get it, but with food this good, the joie de vivre just bubbles over. ”

“ Finding a parking space in front made out choice so much easier. The wait was about 10 minutes and the place looked inviting and busy. After being seated out server took our wine order and gave us our menus. The wine list although shy on Calif, wines is adequate to complementing anything on the menu. Our entrees arrived within what seemed like minutes and were surprisingly good. The pasta was aldente and had sufficient covering of sauce to complement and not hide! One of the issues with lots of places is that they drench everything with too much sauce; here it’s like in the old country, quality not quantity. Everything was great except for the guests on either side of us. They were constantly whining about this or that to the server. I don’t mean subtle, I’m talking about to the point of annoying. But hey, it’s in the Marina so what do you expect? Service was good, food good, other people too loud and galling. Price on the high side, so what else is new. ”

“ It took WEEKS (not kidding!) to get a Thursday night reservation at a prime time (not 5pm, not 9+pm) and I thought this place MUST be amazing! However... I was left wondering what was so amazing about it. The food was fine. The service was fine. The wine was fine. Fine, but nothing "amazing" here. ”

“ I think this place is worth the hype...we had great service, the food was delicious, what an atmosphere!.. the place was buzzing. We sat in the atrium which was nice, perhaps the inside is noisier but who cares, I would have sat anywhere. I like the layout, it stretches back a mile with bar-side seating where you can watch the cooking action etc. The food was served really quickly considering the number of diners, try the zucchini crab salad..OH yes. The lamb and steak entees were both good and the side dishes were exceptional, don't miss the beans. Our server helped us select a wine which was perfect and not too pricey. ”
