Touristy? yes. Busy? I've waited over 2 hours before! Worth it? maybe. I have friends who love this place. I think it's pretty good and the sweet corn tamale appetizers are tasty, not to mention just about everything I've tied on the menu. The major plus is variety - they have all sorts of different kinds of food and a stocked bar. Wouldn't take a date there though - too cheesy! Review #20263

So yes there's a wait, always. We waited at the bar to start out with a c***tail or two. This makes the wait more bearable and worth it! I love the Pisco sours but I always ask for more sour than pineapple juice. The fresh strawberry martinis are tasty too. So after a a few c***tails the wait wasn't terrible. We started with the Mex eggrolls, I love the sauce that they serve these with. It was lunch so we decided to go with "smaller" lunch portions. We had the Pulled Pork Sandwich which was pretty decent and it came with fries and coleslaw. The coleslaw was terribly bland and the fries were limp. We also ordered the lunch portion pizza and salad. The Tomato, Basil, Cheese pizza is good and still huge and the side salad that they brought was larger than most entree salads. I didn't like the Ceaser dressing this time too lemony and thin. No dessert for us, but the strawberry shortcake looked tasty. I think we go for the large selection of items, not because everything blows you away. Review #19743

Cheesecake Factory, The, with us I have always loved the Cheesecake Factory - I lived in LA for the past 7 years and ate at the Pasadena, Irvine and other branches, but this one takes the cake. THe views are tremendous being on top of the MAcy's in union square. THe only gripe is that, like all Cheescake factories, the wait is horrendous - but well worth it. I would suggest the chicken marsala and white chocolate raspberry truffle cheesecake - it is oreo cookie crusted and a slice of the best cheesecake they have to offer! Very good and reasonable priced for the quality of food Review #19153

I absolutely love this place but the problems getting a table preclude going. I'm not sure if reservations would be the answer, but there must be some way to curb the confusion. Cheesecake factory give you really big portions. The food is decent, atmosphere is good, it's just the wait can be way tooo long. Last time we got there around 6 on a saturday and didn't get our table until 9:30. The one thing maybe I don't like about this place is they don't let you make reservations at all. But hey, you do gotta try their cheesecake, it's worth a try, but shouldn't go there too often cause it is a little pricey. Review #17840

And I thought this place ONLY served cheesecake... Extensive and slightly confusing menu. The food is good, but why are the portions so HUGE?? Shared an order of pot stickers. Tasty but they were swimming in soy sauce. Luckily I ordered the small portion thai pasta. Good but again a little too much sauce. Husband got the goulash. He enjoyed it. But still TOO MUCH FOOD!!! He wasn't hungry for 2 days. The diner next to me had a nice looking salad. It was the size of the salad bowl I put on the table for 5 people. The lemonade comes in quart size glasses with free refills. We got plain cheesecake to go because we were too full. All sorts of fancy flavor cheesecakes. Pumpkin, strawberry, beef and banana... ; ) Yummy cheesecake. Especially in bed at midnight... ; ) Service very nice. Lucked out on the wait. At noon it was only 20 minutes. A fair place to go. The food is good. But portions are too big. CCF cut your portions and price in half. You will still get business... Review #17209

hmmmm I know the waiting is a big issue but I dont think the restuarant should be looked down upon because of that. The food isnt really the worst and its actually pretty decent. I havent really had any bad experiences and more then half the time the manager always comes to me and apologizes for the wait. I mean with that being done, i dont really mind the wait. It shows that they do care about the customers that come and dine here. I havent really ate their desserts before but thats because they have pretty big portions and i tend to finish it all. If your the type of person who hates waiting then i wouldnt really suggest it, but if the wait is not a big deal then give it a shot. Review #17177

This is one of those places with such a huge menu that you will never get tired of trying new things. This particular location atop the Macy's in Union Square is always packed so expect a wait. Without reservation's it is fairly easy to grab a bar table. Awesome food (for a chain), epic portion's, amazing dessert's and cool people will make you want to return. My 2 cents on the place. If you don't mind waiting even when you have made a reservation, and taking 2 hours for lunch no matter how early you get here, then this is your place. My favorites are the Crabcake and the Grilled Shrimp & Bacon (Chris Rock's favorite) sandwiches. I recommend getting the Shrimp sandwich without the middle slice of food to make it more appealing. The fish tacos are good here too. The Dulce de Leche is my favorite cheesecake. You'll have enough for another meal, no matter what you order. Sit out on the balcony on a warm day and overlook Union Square. Great place when you need to wear the Terry Tourist hat. Review #16875

The meals are good too with a large menu and something for everyone. Ive always stuck to simple fare as it is more of an assembly line kitchen than a small restaurant. The food comes in enormous portion sizes which I think is a bit of a pain. It was quite tasty but nothing to write home about, and the rediculously long wait to get a table was absurd. I have no idea why this place is so popular. The cheese cake was very good but after that huge dinner all I could stuff in was one or two bites, so not really worth the wait for me. We were in Union Square Macy's yesterday. Went up to check it out, Again. Half the population of Contra Costa county was waiting on-line. I have a suggestion. Fight your way to the podium. Get your name put on the list. Go down, go out, get back in your car. Drive to the cheesecake factory restaurant in Corte Madera, Marin County. Eat 'til you burst. Do NOT have dessert! Get back in your car, drive back to Union square, park. Go back upstairs to the podium, ask about how much longer it will be before you'll be called. You should only have about 5 minutes to wait before they'll seat you for dessert. Review #13559

Forget the attitude and go to the chain restaurant. It's a good value and it's quick and easy when you are hungry and downtown. I have the small BBQ Chix pizza with the small Caesar salad to go with it for $10.50. Their house wine is Mondavi for $6 bucks a glass. You can get out of there for under $20 which is not possible at most restaurants downtown. I sit up at the bar and it's always been good service. I would never ever go there with a big group and wait with one of those buzzers for a table. Forget it! But I would do the bar or one of the bar tables and it's a good value Oh, my friend Susanne, she ate one of the western salads entirely one night! I was shocked! She's a feed-bager when she eats, but this was wild! I tell ya what, those things are good for a group of four! And I always have left over 1/2 pizza which is pretty good. Good value. Review #12198

What can I say? I'm not a jaded SF Foodie and I love CCF. My goofy husband even proposed to me out on the little balcony. Yes, the wait is very annoying. But even though they say you can't leave the floor, well YOU CAN. Just ask the wait time and come back like 10 minutes before. Always, always order a 1/2 salad as a whole is enough to feed a small family. I love how they chiffonade the lettuce for every salad! The menu is long but that's part of the fun. Just don't fill up on the bread b/c it's yummy! The desserts are meant to be decadent and shared. People in this country are overweight because of McDonald's and what not, not CCF. Inevitable that the CCF will take a bashing in a foodie town like SF. Non-foodies will be quite happy here. Foodies, check your tude at the door and pretend you are in a foreign land and approach it with some humor. No one should have trouble finding something that sounds appealing. Menu is way too long. If they cut the menu and spent more time on the remaining items they may fare better with the locals, like they care. Place is booming. Portions are beyond enormous. The size is kind of disgusting when you think of the waste occurring. Enough PC'ness. Most dishes I have had have been fine, not going to be raving about them, but am not leaving feeling unhappy about the experience. Oddly, I like the decor. Sitting outside is fun when weather is decent. Avoid normal meal hours, holidays and heavy tourist season unless you just like to wait a really long time and be in a super busy crazy place. Staff typically young and perky types. Always nice and attentive. Review #10701

avacado egg rolls and cheesecake, that's what i go there for. their plates are huge and you can really get stuffed here, be careful. you'll probably order far more than you can eat. you don't need both an appetizer and an entre here unless you just want leftovers. the food is not bad for a chain. but what they do best is the cheesecake. and there are so many flavors to choose from it's really ridiculous. but if you go with other people, everyone should order a different flavor so you can all try as many as possible. but they are very rich and heavy- the tuxedo cheesecake is great, as is the tiramisu. this time of year (holiday time) or during heavy tourist season i would avoid the place, because as they say, the lines are horrrendous. last time i went was late evening (9pm) and i still had to wait about 20 mins. There's too much going on at C.F., in both the restaurant and the food. At a big chain, you can bet that everything you're eating was frozen just a few hours ago. I've had three or four different cheesecake flavors, and two or three bites of each was all I could handle. Too much. Too heavy. Too big. And what the hell is with the whipped cream? "Hi. I often wondered why there are so many overweight people in this country. Now I know. We were in the area, and i thought we'd try an "out-of-San-Francisco experience" and try this touristy chain. We had a 15 minutes wait ... on a tuesday at 10PM. We were seated next to a table of hearing-impaired people, or at least i thought they were cos they had to shout at each other all the time. The apetizer salad was like, 2 pounds of food. I had one of their veggie burgers. The bun was soaked in fat, the fries arrived lukewarm and were cold 10 minutes later. We had the obligatory cheesecake for desert. It was just too rich. We ate half of it and regretted it later. Why people subject their bodies to this is beyond me. Review #9397

Waiting takes 1-2 hours, so by the time you eat- You are so starved that everything tastes good AND you order more of it. Just a great marketing strategy in my book, so deservedly a +. I've gone these twice recently - one guy could care less whether we were comfortable or not; the other gal was a delight to deal with. The food is hit and miss. They have a very elaborate waiting system. First you wait in line to speak to the “gate keeper” just to put your name down and get a beeper. You are instructed to stay in the restaurant because the beepers work better on this floor, so no shopping while you wait. (Macy’s is missing a huge opportunity here, they should break down and upgrade to the long distance beepers so tourist can spend the wait time shopping.) So you get your beeper and you wait and wait and wait and finally you get the beep and rush back to the “gatekeeper” and they tell you to wait by the column till they call your name. What???!!! The food is not worth the long wait, huge portions of mediocre fair. I did like the outdoor seating, the waiters were very nice and the prices were very affordable. From what I understand this is the most profitable restaurant in San Francisco, so they must be doing something right. Review #7877

There are only a select FEW dishes that could hold the status of even "good" while the rest are simply there to just confuse the hungry patron that has been waiting for an hour for a seat. I was forced into eating at this location of CCF in March 2005. The only times I have been in a CCF before was in L.A. with my brother because there are only chain restaurants out where he lives. If you must eat at a chain restaurant while you're in Union Square, and you don't mind waiting an hour at any time of day, then this is an OK choice, I suppose. It's San Francisco though - so why eat at a chain restaurant?! I do suppose it will please anyone in a large party of eaters as the menu is way too long. And it will please those out-of-towner fat American types who like big portions. And it will please those sorts of people that love Starbucks and Hard Rock Cafes. The food is actually pretty good, even though a bit too much sugar and salt are used, and you'll have enough for your next meal, too. But go somewhere else - have some imagination! Review #5482

Pretty ok for a chain. The entrees I have had are reasonably tasty. The cheesecake is very good. It bears repeating that there are so many better choices in this city. Another complaint; the portions are grotesque. It's just nasty to see so much food on your plate (and I am a big boy with a big appetite)! It makes worse the guilty feeling for supporting the middle-america- corporate-over consumption thing. Really the only reason to go is with out of town family/guests that need some comfort level or with a big group of work associates. For that, it's a great choice that won't ever disappoint. The Cheesecake Factory is probably one of the better chain restaurants out there IMO. Their food is consistently good across all chains. I love the "chocolate" bread that they serve. I like how Cheesecake is adventurous and try to incorporate many different types of food in their menu. My boyfriend always gets the seared Ahi tuna if he doesn't know what to get. I also like their salads...they give generous portions and are tasty. But their menu is very hard to look through. I always have a hard time choosing something from the menu, as it is huge! The best thing abou this restaurant is what is derived from its namesake, the cheesecake. My favorite is the white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake. The worst thing about this restaurant is the wait. You could get a lot of shopping done at Macy's or around Union Square if that beeper thing extended further than it does. I've heard good things about the way they run this restaurant. If you become manager, you could make major bucks! Review #3685

Be prepared to wait a little. Nice ambiance, a little different from the rest of the chains. The food is good, a little pricey..but not bad for what you get. It is noisey and its does have somewhat of a festive flair. I think that being on the 8th floor here, lends itself nicely to the decor, crowd, feel. I think if it was situated at ground level it would not be all that charming. The salads are great as well as their burgers, their wraps, avocado rolls to die for...its just real nice..yum....yum..got to go...i am on my way back there as I speak. Try it..you will like it! It's not surprising that it's called the Cheesecake "Factory," since the cheesecakes do taste mass-produced. Review #2871

Sooooo good. Unfortunately the wait period can be 2 hours or more since they dont take reservations. I always order the Shrimp Bistro pasta but I've had a taste of a few other dishes and they've always been quite delicious. Can be a little pricey. Review #2134

You're in San Francisco, home of thousands of amazing restaurants, and you're thinking about eating at a mega-chain restaurant situated atop a mall? This is a good option if you're in the suburbs, but it's almost a sin to eat there in this town ;) Review #1716

You know when you go to the cheesecake factory that you are in for a wait. Just be prepared for this! Go have a drink in the bar and if you are lucky you can snag one of the bar tables in about a third of the time of your normal wait. They still have great service in this area too! Although some dishes are just so-so, the portions are huge, dessert is delicious, and the drinks will actually give you a buzz. I love the Bistro Shrimp Pasta. That makes it worth it every time. Who wants portions this big? and the menu is like a novel, you have to reference page numbers to let others know what you are odering. The cheesecake is damn good! Review #1198

How can you not like Cheesecake Factory? It has something for everyone. They don't claim to be a 4 star restaurant and they don't have 4 star prices either. The service is excellent and consistent! Review #1044

i LOVE their free bread (the dark brown rye one that's got a hint of brown sugar). HUGE entrees, so worth the money, but the wait is annoying. Review #867

Don't order too much food. Save room for dessert. Or, just go for dessert! Eat on the terrace! Review #361
