Little Star pizza...mmm...as an extreme long-time Zachary's afficianado, I didn't think anything could surpass their deep dish pie...until I tried Little Star! Something 'bout that flavorful cornmeal crust that takes it to another level. Deep dish faves: "Classic" (sausage, mushroom, onion, bell pep) and "Little Star" (spinach/feta/ricotta/mushroom), are both to die for in their deeeeelish quotient. And their house mixed green salad, with walnuts, gorgonzola and a perfectly balanced vinaigrette and is a great way to start the meal. Both the Diviz and Valencia locations have great upscale sophisticated ambiance, not a typical pizza place vibe. mmmm i was wishing for a leftover slice for breakfast this morning but alas it had been eaten.... ”

Great chicago style deep dish pizza! I tried many places around the bay including the disappointing windy city pizza and pizza chicago. The crust is flakely and yummy for the deep dish. I tried the thin crust which was good too but I prefer the deep dish. The parking is a bit difficult but worth it. ”

Fresh, flavorful, satisfying deep-dish pizza. You can order veggy styles and still feel satisfied because of the intense flavors from fresh ingredients. The only thing is that you have to rally a group of friends to finish the pies if you're like me and have to order more than one style. And I rarely make that kind of effort for pizza. For those who do, the pizza here is more than worthwhile. ”

Went there with in-laws from out of the country who never really had deep dish pizza, and my wife and kids. We enjoyed the pizzas we had. One was the vege combo and the other pep/mush/olives. Both deep dish. Lots of sauce and the crust was awesome. I love crust and thought this one really good. Topping were good too. Olives were a little strong so I won't be ordering them anymore. They are the real olives and have a strong flavor I think. Overall, excellent deep dish. My wife liked the sauce a lot. The cheese was very "cheesy" which is good. The place like others have noted is very dark. I personally like to look at my food to see what I am eating and appreciating. Feels like a SF Club if you ask me. Staff is super friendly. Place is clean and the music wasn't too loud. Would go again if I am in the neighborhood. ”

“ I only heard of little star after going to Patsys last week. For years I've been a Zachary's customer. Two friends and i went at 5pm on a week day and had no problem sitting. We got a deep dish half sausage, garlic, and mushroom and half broccoli, sausage and fresh tomato.
The crunchy crust amazed us and the ingredients were totally flavorful, fresh and well prepared. It was all worth the hype. Nice service too. We brought our own wine for a $10 corkage.

You do not come here for anything but to eat the pizzas. If you are a fan of deep dish then you owe it to yourself to try it. Their thin crust pizza is what I preferred, and was blown away with the fresh ingredients. Our big mistake was that we came here thinking that we would be able to carry on a conversation while enjoying the food. NOT!!! The volume level along with the constant thumping of the juke box made the eating experience dredfull. We wanted out! So we grabbed what was left of the food and slid it into a box and enjoyed the rest of it on the hood of the car outside. (our car) Hey, it's a neighborhood party joint, with a constant 118+decibels. Come back, only for take out, too dark, too loud, and too painful! Otherwise it's perfect! ”

“ i have had about 20-30 little star pizzas, deep dish and thin (deep dish is the way to go). but i am over the place. the pizzas were uniformly chuck full of stuff and swimming in tasty tomato sauce. so far so good. but eventually, they lacked interest.
i love pizza. but little star makes its own wonderful tomato sauce pie which is not pizza. some of my friends fall over themselves for the stuff, but then i realized that these were the people who did not grow up on pizza made by real people from italy.
there is nothing not to like about little star's tomato sauce pies except for maybe the uniform enthusiasm, they shout. the restaurant is minimal, dark, ok service. best for friends who are out for a good time where the lack of finesse is less important than the tastiness of the food. ”

“ I've only been introduced to/eating Chicago style pizza for approx. 2 years now. And I've done the rounds. Zachary's, Patxi's, Little Star - all at least two times and some up to 6-7 times. Without a doubt Little Star's wins my vote. The sauce is just incredible - large chunky tomatoes mixed with lots of fresh oregano. An incredibly decadent buttery crust that has a hint of cornmeal coating. The namesake Little Star is fantastic, and they even let us substitute ingredients (due to allergies of one diner) for free ! I cannot wait till this place hits the Mission. ”

“ This east-coast eater loved the ambience at Little Star, but the decor reminded me more of NY than the pizza. I went with three other people who all voted Little Star over Zachary's in Oakland. I was the odd man out (Zach's just blows my pizza mind). We shared a Little Star pizza, which was good (though I'd like to go again to try a different pie too), as well as a salad and some wings. The salad greens were somehow thick, almost too green, almost too earthy. Chicken wings, on the other hand, were amazing, with crispy skin bright with the flavor of flame-opened black pepper. Good beers. Interesting champagne mixed drinks. And though it was crowded, the dining room could easily hold another 8 tables, giving diners ample distance from their neighbors' tables. ”

Little Star makes the best pizza in the city. The deep dish has a flaky, buttery crust, and their sauce is top notch. Make sure to check out the garlic bread when you go - they serve you a container of butter, an entire head of roasted garlic and toasted bread so that you can put it together.
They also have a good beer selection; you can't go wrong with Racer 5 on tap. The music is sometimes too loud, but with such a great jukebox it's hard to complain. ”

“ Fantastic pizza! The place is easy to miss with it's grey exterior that continues into the interior. But the mood warms up with the sounds of Bowie and colorful, fresh, tasty and original food. I had a really nice syrah by the glass. organic mixed greens salad topped with gorgonzola was filling and flavorful. But when I took my first bite of a large Little Star signature pizza...WOW! I fell in love! Place is a little dark, table did wobble but the weird thing is that they ONLY ACCEPT CASH. Luckily we pooled enough cash together and didn't have to use the in house ATM machine. ”

“ Darnit! I really wanted to like this place, but the couple of times I've tried it, I just want Zachery's over in the East Bay all the more. The sauce just isn't as flavorful and the crust is crispy, but dry. It's not horrible or anything. But Zachery's blows it out of the water. Maybe I'll try it one more time... ”

“ TOMATO sauce so fabulous I thought I was back in Italia...talk about mediterranean...an archetype! I have only taken OUT pizza here and ordered well in advance, an hour even. The parking is impossible, so have a friend circle the block while you pick it up. Get the Little Star pizza or the chicken mediterranean and ask that tomato sauce be added as it doesn't otherwise come with the chicken pizza...eegads, such delicious tomato sauce is unheard of and I was stunned and delighted to find it free flowing here on Diviz. The pizza was so big I had some left over and this deep-dish pizza with the corn meal crust and stellar tomato sauce was still delicious 3 days later, a cold slice from the refrigerator, hmmmm. That tomato sauce is a unique taste I'm growing to hanker after and it'll keep me going back. (I secretly wanna taka bath in it, har har har). ”

“ BEWARE: of the unfriendly wait staff, especially of the female server with long brown hair and blunt bangs. I hate to be negative but I have never been treated so rudely by a server before. Not once did this girl crack a smile and when we had a question regarding the menu she rolled her eyes and gave us a dirty look. This is not an isolated experience my friends have reported similar experiences with the same server. The other servers were friendlier but for some reason we have been stuck with this same server. On the other hand i really enjoy the food, especially the mediterranean chicken deep dish. Yet, being a server myself I cannot get past being treated like dirt when i am spending the evening out at a restaurant. I know it is busy and believe me I know that it is difficult to be a server. I just hope that the management catches this issue before it starts turning even more customers away. ”

“ My friends and I love the food and staff... My favorite is the vegetarian Deep Dish... my friends also like the White Pesto Thin Crust... I go with large and small parties and never have problems... we know the rules: show up early and have all of your people there to be seated... it gets crowded but the staff are on top of it, I have never had any mess ups in the numerous times I have gone. The music and drinks are hip. The atmosphere is dim with red lights. The pies run up to $22.oo but all I need is two slices of deep dish to completely fill me up. The rest you take home for late night treats. My crowd is from Jersey and we like our pizza... you may find us in there stuffing our faces. ”

“ my friends were in town and we decided on trying this pizza place as we've heard great things. got there right when they opened at 5pm to beat the crowd and were seated promptly. cool, dim & minimal is what i would describe the atmosphere inside the restaurant. we ordered the large mixed green salad that fed all 3 of us. it was really yummy! we also ordered the large deep dish of the mediterranean chicken and a small thin crust of the pesto chicken. boy were we blown away with the mediterranean chicken deep dish...it wasn't doughy like all the other pizza joints are...crust was LIGHT and crispy! they use cornmeal flour and that's why it's SO yummy and crispy and light tasting. we will definitely be back for more. i brought some leftovers for my roommates and they were blown away as well....i will probably be ordering to go sometime in the near future. love this place....and my friends said that this is even better than zachary's! great jukebox & song selections! ”

“ Avoid this place!
I had two VERY bad experiences here. I found the staff to be completely unaccomidating. I was told by a rather rude "hostes" that she could not seat our party of three until all members of the party were there. This is understandable during rushes - BUT THE PLACE WAS EMPTY - LITERALLY! Okay. Fine. I'll wait at the bar. I order two drinks and hand the bartender my card only to have him say "uhh, naw, we can't do two bills." So not only could I not be seated, but I couldn't buy a drink if I wanted to eat. Needless to say I got up and walked out. I had a similar experience the first time I tried to eat there.
Just very unreasonable, and very rude about it.
I've also heard of the staff conducting some shady over charging - so if you do end up going to this dump (which I highly advise against) triple check you bill! ”

“ I won a dinner to this place and thought I would give it a try. We walked in and there was not a seat to be had. The waitress kindly told us she would give us the next table available. After about 3 minutes we were seated and ordered a deep dish pizza. It was very good and I'll have to point out, the sauce was very tangy and had garlic taste in it. The crust was the best part and I'm one who usually throws the crust away. I ate almost all of mine. ”

“ Man, I am soooooooo disappionted in this place. I live in the hood and was excited to try the new pizza joint. WOW-was I ever let down hard! The food is O.K.- over priced but still tasty, but I have NEVER experienced the rudeness, lack of professionalism, snottyness and just overall s**tty service as I have the few times I have been there! There are a few other restaurants in this hood that actually deserve my business. They are friendly and accomodating. Unless this place gets it's service s**t together-I will NEVER be back! ”

“ I love, love, love the cornmeal crusted pizza! Order the Classic and you'll die and go to heaven.
I hate, hate, hate the wait! Order 30 minutes ahead of time and have the pizza to go. The place is too noisy and being in a room full of hungry people who have been waiting too long for their food isn't a good place to be. Can I say riot? I know this restaurant has been getting great reviews, but I just can't justify bestowing upon them the Green Dot of Yummy, not just yet. I'll re-do my review if I see improvements. Little Star, one day you'll be a big star, but if you don't get your act together I promise you a quick transition into a Falling Star. ”

“ Damn fine pizza. Deep dish, crust is cornmeal and medium thick. They pile the cheese on the bottom, then all the goodies, and tomatoe sauce over the top, so it looks like a deep tomatoe pie. “ Although I had heard great things about Little Star, reading the last 2 reviews had me worried that all the recent publicity was going to turn a quick trip to a pizzeria into an annoying and disappointing nightmare. I went on a Tuesday afternoon around 6:30, and it was empty except for 2 tables. Service was a little scarce and the pizza, which really was delicious, took a long time, but it was an overall good pizza experience. I think I might try the thin crust next time, deep dish is a little too much.
By 7:30, however, the place was packed, and I can understand why some folks would opt for another pizza place.

“ After reading all the tremendous reviews I decided to pick up a pie from Little Star on my way home. Had my 8-year old with me and figured it wouldn't be a long wait since it was a weeknight. Parked illegally, found the place, and walked in to the darkest, smallest, most crowded restaurant ever. The only lighting seemed to be little candles on the table. I wrestled my way up to the bar to get a menu and order and waited 10 minutes for the 'tender to even meet my eye. When I asked how long it would take for a pie to go (I thought I'd order, drop my kid at home, then return), I was told, "I don't know. It depends." A guest laughed and told me I could plan on an hour. After that I decided to forgo the small, expensive pizzas and went home to sandwiches. ”

“ The pizza is good. Believe me I've been looking.
The service is TERRIBLE!!! I was there Tuesday evening and there were like six waiters there all running around like mad trying to get it together. Trying. There are only 15 tables in the whole place!!! It took almost an hour to get our two pizzas. I think the management should reconsider whatever it is they are doing. There should be a host, bartender, food runner and two servers.
Food is good, service needs serious help. ”

“ Ok, I actually feel sort of nervous reviewing this seemingly universally loved place. Just had a take out pizza tonite and have to say......it's pretty good. I don't really get the comparisons to Zachary's in the east bay. Zachary's does stuffed pizza, Little Star is deep dish. They are totally different things. But that's ok, because the pizza here was tasty and our order of spicy wings and the salad were good as well. It also seems to be a fairly good value. I definitely plan to make this place a regular choice when pizza is on the menu. UPDATE: I am so sick of the cooler than thou twenty somethng hipster attitude here. I am a very friendly, patient customer. I even tip when I am picking up to go pizza for christ sakes and all I get is a sneer and a grunt from the staff here. The review stays positive because the food is good, but the tips are gonna stop! If your are too cool for your job, quit and get one that suits you! ”

“ Great addition to the neighborhood. Thanks to SFsurvey I FINALLY visited this restaurant. Had it not been for this site I probably wouldn't have. The staff is super friendly, excellent jukebox, great atmosphere. Food was good. We had the deep crust pizza combo. It was excellent, Fresh ingredients, best sausage (on a pizza) I've had in town, crust was yummers. We also ordered the chicken wings which were just good/ok. Not the buffalo style but standard roasted spicy. A little bland for my chicken wing needs but the pizza was the tops. A little on the pricey side ($21 for a 10" Deep Dish). ”

“ Ah yes, yet another positive review of Little Star. When my friend told me about this place, I was like, "Corn meal does not belong in my pizza crust," but it turned out better than expected. Being that I'm from New York, and therefore a pizza snob, I can only say that the pizza was good, but didn't exactly meet my ideal. It wasn't bad, just different. Also, because I'm from New York, I have a very particular notion of what makes for a good chicken wing - and that is deep fried wings slathered in a sauce of butter and Frank's Red Hot. The Little Star wings were tasty, but not what I look for in a wing. We sat in the back and it was a lot darker than the pictures suggest. Our table was kind of tipsy, but after a few glasses of Racer 5, so were we, so it didn't matter. Our server was friendly, but not particularly attentive. By around 9:00, the place filled up with people hanging out around the bar and generally being more casual than us, which I think is the way to go at Little Star. ”

The only other deep dish that I like is from Zachary's in the east bay. ”

“ It's good. Damn good. I can't say if it's better or worse than Zachary's or Patxi's, but it's good. Interestingly different from the others with a corn meal crust. The only downsides were that the wine by the glass we picked wasn't all that great, and it was REALLY LOUD, but that may have simply been due to the presence of a large party.

“ This pizza place makes me happy. They have a great salad and amazing desserts. Fantastic deep dish and thin crust guaranteed to make your taste buds dance (ah man that crust). Beer and champagne cocktails--now that's class. The jukebox hits the spot as well, and the place has birds on the restroom sign. Amazing-I'll see you there! ”

“ Great new modern pizzeria. The garlic bread was great: toasted bread served with a side of rich whipped butter and a whole roasted garlic bulb; wonderfully decadent and savory deep dish pizza; and a fantastically rich cheese cake dessert. With dim lighting (maybe a bit too dim), modern art, and a juke box with none of the old classics, Little Star is a great new twist on an old theme. Friendly wait staff and a carafe of water left on every table are added bonuses. I saw a review on this place recently in the Food section of the Chronicle, a guy from NY had written a book on pizza and trash talked California pizza. An editor for the Food section of the Chronicle called him out for a pizza challenge. They went to over a dozen Bay Area pizzarias. At the end of the day, not only did he change his mind about California pizza generally, but also commented that Little Star is far and away the better deep dish pizza over Zachary's. ”

“ This is a cute little place. When the door open there is a nice curtain windbreaker, so the cool air doesn't rush in and chill you down. Bar is a cosy set up. The menu is limited but quite yummy. we had a caprese salad, mixed salad that had lots of things in it and a tasty pizza, with several toppings. I love the thin crusts, but this one actually offers both...usually it's 1 or the other. This is a spot to stop by even for just a drink, warm setting. ”

“ pizza was really good-very fresh tasting and that great cornmeal crust! Music was too loud for my taste but hey, it was Friday night and the delicious pizza and good service made up for it. Garlic bread - served with a bulb of perfectly baked garlic and butter was a treat and we were safe from vampires for hours. If it wasn't for this website, I would never have known this place existed. Parking was not easy. ”

“ Oh! This is why they call it pizza pie. Not your typical corner pizza; we thoroughly enjoy our dinner: chicken wings, hot sauce on the side, caprese salad and the Little Star deep dish. This pizza is awesome; the crust like no other, it is remindful of a savory (not sweet) cookie. Nice. A little pricey but delicious and worth the cost. I would have never thought to visit had it not been for sfsurvey. ”

“ A nice, clean and shiny pizza place that's not a chain. The food was excellent and the drink choices were good too - The music made it even better,( a little chilly in there - but maybe because it's new).
You should go . ”

“ FEB 2006 Update: Had take-out deep dish from Zachary's on College (ALWAYS too insane to try to eat there), and I think Little Star beats it hands down. Their sauce and crust are way yummier!
JAN 2006: I got take-out deep dish (the "Little Star") and a salad: Still so yummy!
JAN 2005 Review : After driving around for 10 minutes trying to find a parking space, I was thinking this place better be really good - and it was! I hadn't had deep dish in a few years since last braving the crowds at Zachary's in Berkeley and after eating theirs it really made me regret that time lag. The crust was crispy and the tomato sauce was yummy -- perfectly spiced (we had the "Little Star"). We also had the green salad which was perfect. Good, friendly service. The jukebox was fun, too. I've had atke-out from there since then and the quality was just as good, though better to eat deep dish on the spot. ”

“ I am normally a thin crust pizza fan because of the usual soft gooey crust of a deep dish. The crust here is deep but nice and crispy with cornmeal. The pizza was really good. The service was fine...but definetly not overly friendly. It has the potential to be a really cool spot. ”

“ So one of my biggest gripes about SF eating has been the lack of good pizza. Thank god for this place! We had the deep dish, and to me it tasted better than Zachary's. The crust is very light, and has a nice crispness to it. The atmosphere is very pleasant, great lighting and decoration. The owner was very friendly, talked to us a lot about the challenge of starting a new restaurant. Oh yeah, and they have some very interesting champagne cocktails. ”

“ we just happened upon little star last friday evening and got quite a surprise. when i lived in sf, i would come to the east bay for pizza. looks like now that i live in the east bay, i'll be headed for sf for pizza now. we're both pizza aficionados [having gone to college in chicago] and we prefer little star to zachary's. and there were no lines to wait in. good tunes, cool staff. we'll be back. try the spinach/feta/ricotta blend - yummm! ”

“ I went here for the $1 PBR happy hour, stayed for the pizza and loved the jukebox. Truly, their deep dish pizza does rival Zachary's; thank goodness they're on opposite sides of the bay! I had a cheeseless pizza and was told by the owner that a vegan cheese substitute is in the works, and got a lot of personal attention from the staff. I also really enjoyed the sauce; it had a spicy tang to it that added a lot of character to the pizza! Everyone should check this new restaurant out! ”

“ Watch out Zachary's. Neither my dining partner nor I are normally big deep-dish pizza fans, but this was fantastic. We ate next to a couple from Chicago and they said this was the best deep-dish they have ever had on the west coast in five years. Hip but not pretentious, this is a good spot for any sort of occassion. Caprese salad was great too, where they find such good tomatoes during this time of shortage I'll never know. I'll definitely be back. Ditto on the great jukebox. ”

“ Wow, this is a pizza place? Atmosphere was hip/casual, nice romantic low lighting and the service was super friendly. I'm currently doing low carb so I stayed away from the pizza, it was hard to, it looked and smelled like heaven! I had the chicken wings and a lovely mozzarella and tomato salad. I will be going back post diet! Update I cheated on the diet and had three orgasmic bites of Wayne's deep dish pizza, I'm only human and the pizza was well worth it!!! ”

“ Clean minimalistic restaurant, that specializes in deep dish pizza, myself being on the low carb diet, had the mozzarella & tomato and I also had chicken wings with fire sauce. Our friends had the pizza and it looked abousultly delicious, the service was great. POST-Diet update, this was my first pizza in 60 days and what a treat it was, I was most impressed with the crust, which is super tasty, it must be the butter :-) The ingredient's are fresh and crisp. I can't wait to re-heat. ”

“ Nice new addition to the neighborhood. Incredible deep dish pizza! The thin crust rocks as well. One of the best jukeboxes I have ever encountered. I highly recommend this little joint. ”
