“
I found myself in this neighborhood on Sat, looking for a wine store. When I saw the sign for El Toreador, I was interested. As we walked in, I was a bit overwhelmed by all the stuff, but I was welcomed with a friendly hello and was told to sit where ever I wanted. I don't think I had even sat down, before a man was bringing chips and salsa. The salsa was very spicy, but very good. I think the lunch prices might be some of the best have scene in the city.
I had two large steak tacos with rice for $7.95. Pretty tasty, however the little cups they put the rice in make it hard to eat. I ended up just dumping the rice on my plate, however not before I flicked most of it everywhere else.
Not sure I would make the drive from my house back to El Toreador, but If I lived in this area, I know I would be a regular! ”

“ I have to admit I enjoy this place. Their spinach enchiladas are so tasty and I love the ambiance. Its so fun and festive! I have great memories coming here with my grandmother. Plus, the owners are french Bulldog owners and they decided to deck out the customer bathroom in memorabilia! This place is popular and often have to wait but you can go next door to the pub and have drinks and they will call you! ”

“
They always say you get what you pay for, so this moderately priced mexican restaurants puts out medium quality with tasteless food. mexican food does not have to be spicy in order to have flavor. Fresh ingredient should be able to do it on their own! This cramped noisy little neighborhood place servers up neither good or memorable food. They take the safe approach in not wanting to offend anyone. The cheese which was topping my refried (out of a can) beans was tasteless and cilantro with dark green/black leaves doesn't spell fresh to me. The fish in the tacos should have been pulled on day sooner also. The service was OK, but the food didn't make the whole experience worth the price of the check. Parking is generally nasty here, so choose one of the many other places on the street. ”

“ I tried the fish tacos and a margarita for lunch the other day. It was just OK. The fish was a bit oily but a decent portion size. The Margarita was also very flavourless...better than being sickly sweet though...but I wouldn't order another. They have a huge selection of beers...probably the way to go. The intereior is fun & funky. The service was friendly... when she came by...but not overly efficient. I may be back...i want to like it here...so I'll give it another try someday :0) ”

“ i was really happy with this place. it's the closesst i've gotten to tex-mex anywhere in this town. i wasn't thrilled with the salsa, but it was ok. i loved the shredded tacos, tho! the waitress was pleasant. the corn tortillas were fabulous. i will definitely be back. ”

“ It was a hard choice considering the various options within the immediate vicinity. I had the tostada salad, and although it was plentiful, it was lacking in flavor (bland). The margaritas were decent. The tables were small and felt very cramped. The service was basic, and prices were reasonable. I didn't feel it was worth the wait though.

“ Though Toreador is not for me, I probably would recommend it to someone looking for good mexican food in a fun atmosphere. Pricey? A little, but dishes are plentiful and often contain fresh ingredients, like crab. The salsa has the crispness of fresh lime juice, though the tamales are a bit too mealy. ”

“ First, the food is mediocre, but the atmosphere and staff are great and worth a visit if you are in West Portal. This is a busy suburban strip in the city. Easy access to the underground. A local theatre house and plenty of coffeehouses. There are lots of reasons to spend an afternoon here and El Toreador is one of them.

“ Have had lunch at this restaurant a number of times and had lunch there yesterday. Seems like the food is as good as ever. I enjoy ordering the specials and this time had small green chile's stuffed with shrimp and cheese. Very tasty. My wife had one of the specials too - chile relleno without the breading - she said it was excellent. Kind of a fun place with the wild decorations. By the way if you like beer they have a large selection. ”

“ First of all, the decor is wonderful with all of the pictures of old Hollywood stars. Can't beat autographed pics of the Hollywood greats. The food is good too, some things are a bit pricy for basic mexican food. Watch out, the salsa is great, but it's hot. ”

“ Seems like a good place. I ordered a three way combo plate. The cheese enchilada was not very tasty. The beef tostada was quite nice as was the chicken taco. The cup of soup that came with the entree was delicious! very simple (and salty). The margaritas were very nice and the guacalmole fresh and flavorful. Still not the place that is going to make me forget the mexican food from back home and I still think Puerto Allegre is better, but worth repeat visits. ”

“ Very good!! Love the hot sauce and margarita! Funky decor, and it's true you cannot see the walls behind the decorations. It is old school, but I love the empalmada. Don't miss the soup that is served with some dinners. ”

“ Best place in the area for a late lunch or early dinner on the weekend. I've never waited for a table between 2 and 5. Everything is good. Very bright (very!) decor, but the food isn't drab by comparison. ”

“ I love this place. The chicken enchiladas and empalmadas are great. The wait can be long, but Joxer Daly's, an Irish pub next door, is a great place to have a drink and wait. ”

“ Ooh, I do enjoy this restaurant, we visit during the week so we haven't had to deal with the wait. West Portal parking is terrible, take MUNI down if you can. ”

“ Best (and sometimes only) reason to come to West Portal. Long wait on weekends, but you can hang out at the bar next door (Joxer Daly's) and the Host will come find you. ”
